Hi
all,

We're in the process of relocating users from one
server to another. Is there an
easy way to change the server the users connect to within outlook for 150
users? Can this be done from a logon script.

Most of the clients are Win95, The Exchange servers are Exchange 2000

Any advice appreciated

2002-04-12 Thread William Lefkovics

Yes, thank you for the correction.

That is correct and A1 in the FAQ section 3.23 would concur. If using the
routing tab.
http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq_sec3.htm

However, try if the two address formats are not homogenous namespaces.
For example:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

To go back and answer Simon's original question, Exchange2000 uses SMTP to
route email. The full SMTP address is typically required.

In Ex55 there it is not necessary to apply the secondary-proxy-address with
that second domain. If the MX Record points to your Ex55-Box then you'll get
the mail addressed to the secondary address in your email box.

I just did a test (again to verify my ancient knowledge...) :-)

Users still would need the secondary-proxy-address with that second domain
in order to receive email.

In Exchange2000, the process is similar. You can use Recipient Policies to
control this.

That was easy. In Exchange admin, Connections, IMS, on the routing tab I
enabled Reroute incoming SMTP mail Then by pressing Add I
entered the domain, and chose the option Should be rerouted to this
domain and entered the primary domain that I use for all email. I had
about thirty domains on one server all routing this way.
This works for inbound only.
I found it very useful as we kept acquiring domains and I was able to
ensure to management that the domains would work for inbound. If a
certain user needed to send email with a different domain from the
primary (different project or division) I could change it manually.
If I could do this for Exchange 2000 without having to enter individual
addresses to each user for each domain then I would be very happy.
Hope this helps,
Simon.

Hello,
In Exchange 5.5 I could have one domain mapped to another, so
username@domaina.com would automatically go to username@domainb.com,
without having to add the second domain to everyone's SMTP email
address. Very useful when the company wanted all of their domains to
work for inbound email and also meant I didn't have to modify every
account each time a new one was bought. However despite lots of research
I can't seem to find that feature on Exchange 2000. Am I missing
something obvious? Thanks, Simon Butler.

Is it possible to cutoff internet email individually. What I would like to

Also how do you cut internet mail site wide from being sent but, still

I looked it up on Microsoft's site and they say it is caused by a
corrupted version of Veritas Backup Exec Software (Q294700). I have never
installed Veritas Backup Exec. I have also tried removing the NT backup

try to install OWA it gives me an installation error:

OWA failed to install properly

An unknown error has occurred

Unknown facility 076a-c00e

I looked it up on Microsoft's site and they say it is caused by a
corrupted version of Veritas Backup Exec Software (Q294700). I have never
installed Veritas Backup Exec. I have also tried removing the NT backup
programs and then reapplying service packs. I still cannot get past this
error message.

Anyone else had problems with this?

Yes.

You installed IIS from the NT 4.0 Option pack, right? Not the IIS that comes

2002-04-12 Thread Bob Peitzke

Bob,

Your comment about the IP release/renew rang a bell for me. We had
intermittent slowness or inability to send mail or access Internet sites,
but never all users. In our case, the release/renew almost always fixed it,
as usually our internal DNS server responded first. The problem only
occurred when an outside one beat ours to the response. I doubt that this
applies to you, since you said all users are slow, but I'll throw it out
just in case. Here are my notes on it, with credits to MS PSS:

Problem:Users in a Windows 2000 domain intermittently lose ability
to access servers by FQDN. Ipconfig Release/Renew fixes it temporarily.

Analysis: DNS server references and relationships were set up wrong.
The DHCP server was publishing three DNS servers - primary was an internal
DNS server which could resolve local server names, but 2nd 3rd DNS servers
were ISP's, which had no knowledge of hosts in our private domain.

Solution: Change the DHCP server to publish only addresses of internal
DNS server(s). Change the DNS server(s) to forward DNS queries they can't
resolve, to the ISP's DNS server(s). Follow these steps:
1. In the TCP/IP properties /Advanced, of each Windows 2000 server,
remove references to external DNS servers.
2. For mixed-mode domains, in TCP/IP properties /Advanced, of each
Windows 2000 server that is running a WINS server, change its WINS to refer
only to itself. For W2K servers not running WINS, point them to an internal
WINS server.
3. In the DNS Administration app on each Win2K DNS server, go into
properties of the server, then in the Forwarders tab, check Enable
forwarders and add the IP addresses of the ISP's DNS servers.
4. Still in the DNS Admin app, go into the properties of the forward
lookup zone, in the General tab, and set Allow dynamic updates? to Yes.
5. In the DHCP server, in Server Options, configure options 005 Name
Servers, and 006 DNS Servers, to publish only the IP address(es) of the
internal DNS server(s).
6. Bounce the DHCP Server service.
7. Ask all users to do ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew. A
script is handy for this.

the computers date to 2004. It finished the archive, but when I clicked
on it I got the same response. If anyone has any ideas on this I would

User running Outlook 98 connects to Exchange 5.5 SP4 server. Since
yesterday every time they click on the calendar it will cause Outlook to
hang. The CPU spikes to 100 and Outlook shows that it is not responding.
They are still receiving email, but anything to do with the calendar will
just hang Outlook. The only thing that I know changed yesterday is we
removed some old accounts off the server. They had all been hidden for
some time so I know no one was using them, but they could have had an old
meeting scheduled with one of them. I wouldn't think this would cause
Outlook to hang though.
If the user connects through OWA everything works fine. She can see her
calendar and use it without issues. If someone else tries to open her
calendar (one of her delegates) it will cause their Outlook to just hang
as well. I have tried searching the knowledge base but could not find
anything. I was hoping that someone had seen something like this before
and could help me out.
I appreciate it,
John

Wrong Primary DNS Suffix on Server Running Exchange 5.5

2002-04-12 Thread Kevan Dickinson

The primary DNS Suffix of the win 2k Server upon which our Exchange 5.5
Server is installed has been miss spelt.

Does anyone know what effect, if any will be had, if I change this entry to
the correct name.

At the moment we do not have an internal DNS server set up.
All DNS is done at the ISP.

This could be a reason why our mail seems slow.

We are still running a Win NT4 Domain with a couple of Win 2k servers
running applications (including Exchange).

Any input will be gratefully received.

In Exchange System manager go to Folders. Right click on the top level
folder, chose All Tasks, choose Propagate Settings, choose the settings you
want to propagate, click OK. This only works for folders below a top level
folder.

How can I change a permission on a top level folder,
and have the permissions trickle down to all the lower level folders?

I changed the top level folder and none of the lower level folders have
changed?

Anything that I obvious that I am missing?

Well another idea is a
send mail server in front of the exchange server sending internet mail to
dev/null. No matter what way you look at it, it would be time
consuming. Sounds like some needs new users...

That is a VERY time consuming idea. You are suggesting
something that is a bit granular. You would have to enter each SENDER address
to achieve what he is asking for. Plus, he is asking to QUEUE these messages,
not reject them. I will have to think about this one.

Is it possible to cutoff internet email individually.
What I would like to
do is for that person's sent
internet email to be held up in the queue if
possible. His incoming email to be
held in the queue also. Is this possible?

Also how do you cut internet mail site wide from being

done?

I need this for only about 4 hours.

calendar it caused Outlook to hang on that machine as well. I set the
autoarchive to delete anything older than a day (still on the PST) and set
the computers date to 2004. It finished the archive, but when I clicked
on it I got the same response. If anyone has any ideas on this I would

renane the D partition to E and assign the Letter D to the new drive, then
copying the exchange folders to the new drive. The current D drive
(partition) is running out of space, even after many attempted try's to get
people to delete old mail and attachments.

Would this work. Will exchange still run?

RE: Calendar Problem

2002-04-12 Thread John

I don't get any error message. It will just hang and the CPU will peg
out. The only time I got a message is when I tried to export the calendar
to a PST. I got a message saying, One or more recipients in this item
were not usable. You need to recreate the addresses. Could not complete
the operation. One or more parameter values are not valid. After I
clicked OK it continued exporting. That made me think that one of the
items was corrupt in the calendar so I archived the calendar telling it to
delete anything older than a month. I still could not get into the
calendar but when I exported it to a PST again I did not get that message.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - -
Problem:Users in a Windows 2000 domain intermittently lose ability
to access servers by FQDN.

What is the proper method to lockdown IIS under this environment?

Well
another idea is a send mail server in front of the exchange server sending

Ok - this is a
weird one.

I have an account
that needs to be an owner of some DL's in the GAL. But we do not
want them sending email from this account at all.

I have been playing
with permissions but if I get where they can't send - then they can't do
anything else.

I removed all of
the email address including the x400 but it still can
send.

Any
ideas?

Seeing one must use IIS on a Windows 2000 box running Exchange 2000 if one wants to use the Outlook Web Access.

What is the proper method to lockdown IIS under this environment?

I know of the lockdown utility, however is that the best method?

That is a VERY time consuming idea. You are
suggesting something that is a bit granular. You would have to enter each

Is it possible to cutoff internet email

Also how do you cut internet mail site wide from

RE: Calendar Problem

2002-04-12 Thread Mommens, Matt

I have run into this on our Resource Calendars. For us, it came down to
corrupt reoccurrence information in one of the meetings. To fix it, I
opened the calendar with a legacy client (exchange client) and moved the
calendar folder to a PST. Then I had outlook recreate the Calendar folder
by opening outlook with the /resetfolder switch. Then from the exchange
client I began moving appointments back into the calendar until I found the
one that was corrupt (also have the mailbox open with Outlook and the
processor will spike when it is moved in). Recreate that item and all is
good.

They had all been hidden for some
time so I know no one was using them, but they could have had an old meeting
scheduled with one of them. I wouldn't think this would cause Outlook to
hang though. If the user connects through OWA everything works fine. She
can see her calendar and use it without issues. If someone else tries to
open her calendar (one of her delegates) it will cause their Outlook to just
hang as well. I have tried searching the knowledge base but could not find
anything. I was hoping that someone had seen something like this before and
could help me out. I appreciate it, John

If they have admin rights on the others, they can open the actual mailbox via Tools/Email

Repost: Question on log files with online backup

2002-04-12 Thread Bob Peitzke

I posted this a couple of weeks ago, and got no response. But nobody flamed
me either, so assuming y'all just weren't listening, I thought I'd try again
...

We are doing full online backups of our Exchange 5.5/SP3 server, using
BackupExec 8.6 with BE Exchange Agent, but not using the OFO. Circular
logging is disabled.

I get the following messages in our nightly backup logs:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
IMS Volume:

Directory \exchsrvr\DSADATA
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\temp.edb - skipped.
Directory \exchsrvr\dxadata
Directory \exchsrvr\imcdata
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\imcdata\queue.dat - skipped.
. . .
Directory \exchsrvr\mdbdata
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\mdbdata\tmp.edb - skipped.
Directory \exchsrvr\MTADATA
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MTADATA\AP0.LOG - skipped.
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MTADATA\BF0.LOG - skipped.
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MTADATA\EV0.LOG - skipped.
. . .
Log Files Volume:

Directory \exchsrvr\DSADATA
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\edb.log - skipped.
Directory \exchsrvr\MDBDATA
Unable to open the item \exchsrvr\MDBDATA\edb.log - skipped.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In the Info Stores volume, we select the Information Store and Directory
(entries available because we use BE Exchange Agent) but not the file-level
priv.edb or pub.edb, of course, as they are open.

The Exchange DR white paper says that committed log files are backed up then
purged, specifically referencing NTBACKUP only for incrementals.

Now I'm worried that we're not backing up everything we need to restore a
current system in case of failure. If I restore the database but not
uncommitted logs, have we just lost some recent messages?

Advice?

2002-04-12 Thread Bob Christian

RE: Exchange 2000 book recommendation (and shameless plug)

I would recommend the Exchange 2000 training kit books and Admin pocket consultant.
Both are from MS press. If you have a solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, and Active
Directory you should be fine. All three should set you back just under #100.

I would recommend purchasing stuff from www.bookpool.com. They sell @ a 40%+ discount
most of the time. Their pricing is better than most eBay or half.com auctions after
shipping is calculated.

Does anyone know if any software exists that can check each piece of
incoming E-mail for spoofing and then not pass it to the recipient if it is?
Whether the From: or To: is spoofed or the DNS name is not a known host name
just send it to the Badmail directory.
I use Visualware's eMailTrackerPro to see where a lot of this SPAM comes
from, it shows the spoofing but cannot take action against it. I run an
Exchange 2000 server and unwanted eMails sent to legitimate addresses but
from spoofed senders is really becoming a headache.

Instant Messaging and SSL

2002-04-12 Thread Tom Teater

Good day,
We're using Exchange 2K (sp2) and have set up Instant Messaging.
Everything has been working well until today. We installed a 128 bit SSL
certificate on the server today to provide a more secure means of access
for OWA. This works great, but now Instant Messaging seems to be broken.
IM is looking to connect with port 80, but that is no longer available
now. Only secure connections via port 443 are now working. Is there any
way of making Instant Messaging work with this configuration?

Thanks in advance for any pointers you can give.

Turn off Require 128 SSL Certificate in the Default Website in IIS and
turn it only on at the following virtual directories /Exchange,
/Public.

Note that you might also be unable to administrate your public folders
with Exchange System Manager because it uses the IIS virtual directory
/ExAdmin via port 80 HTTP (not SSL/HTTPS).

Yes again - that's exactly what we are doing.

Missy's comment leads me to believe that I don't have a problem, and that I
can just deselect these log directories from the backup selections, and not
worry about it. Unless somebody tells me different, I can start sleeping

RE: Instant Messaging and SSL

Thanks for the assist. I assume that all the exchanges services as well
as the web service will have to be stopped and re-started?

Turn off Require 128 SSL Certificate in the Default Website in IIS and
turn it only on at the following virtual directories /Exchange,
/Public.

Note that you might also be unable to administrate your public folders
with Exchange System Manager because it uses the IIS virtual directory
/ExAdmin via port 80 HTTP (not SSL/HTTPS).

 Good day,
We're using Exchange 2K (sp2) and have set up Instant Messaging.

Everything has been working well until today. We installed a 128 bit
SSL
certificate on the server today to provide a more secure means of
access
for OWA. This works great, but now Instant Messaging seems to be
broken.
IM is looking to connect with port 80, but that is no longer available

now. Only secure connections via port 443 are now working. Is there
any
way of making Instant Messaging work with this configuration?

Thanks in advance for any pointers you can give.

It might be enough to stop and restart the Default Website and the
Exchange HTTP Virtual Server. But you'd do better by restarting IISADMIN
and all its depending services.

RE: Repost: Question on log files with online backup

2002-04-12 Thread Dennis Atherton

You should exclude from your file level backup Any and All of your
\exchsrvr directories. In may case, they are on Drives c:\, d:\, e:\, and
F:\. Since I have run optimizer a few times and added more disks to our
Exchange server.

Once you exclude these directories, the Exchange Aware backup will
completely backup your Exchange system, and the file system backup will back
up the rest of your files on this server. Backing up there \exchsrvr
directories will both fail because log files are open, and take longer as it
continues to try to back them up.

Treat the file system backups the same as you would you Anti-Virus Scanning
against this server - exclude the \exchsrvr directories, and all will be
happy.

Hi, Dennis,

These messages seem to be coming NOT from the Exchange Backup, but from
the
file level backup of the Server Exchange is running on.

Yes. The messages are out of the BackupExec logs. Sorry, I should have made
that more clear.

There are two parts to a complete system backup. The file level backup,
where you back up the complete system, except for the \exchsrvr directories.
The Exchange Aware backup will then allow you to select the Microsoft
Exchange Server, and the information store and the directory.

Yes again - that's exactly what we are doing.

Missy's comment leads me to believe that I don't have a problem, and that I
can just deselect these log directories from the backup selections, and not
worry about it. Unless somebody tells me different, I can start sleeping
better now :o)

Advice?

public folder size

2002-04-12 Thread MSexchange

Hello All,

Exch 5.5 sp4 on win2kserver sp2 on nt domain

Is there a limit on how large the public folders can be (assuming pub.edb)?
, I've just been told by my CTO that he wants everyone to store their stuff
into public folders (I'm assuming like a file server). My worry is how much
stuff can public folders hold (any max limitations)...or is it based on how
large my hard drive is (that the pub.edb resides on)

thanks,

Fred Valdez

RE: Repost: Question on log files with online backup

2002-04-12 Thread Donna Benefield

I have had more experience that I wanted restoring Exchange 5.5, sp4, using
BE 8.6. I did not have circular logging enabled either.

Make sure you are doing a full backup of the volumes, along with a full
backup nightly of the IS and Directory databases.

If so, you will be able to restore everything to the point of the backup.
This is my understanding of how BackupExec 8.6 does it...
1. Backs up the database and logs separately.
2. Commits logs to the databases and erases after the backups complete.

If you do a restore, there are specific steps you have to take to restore
correctly, depending on what you are restoring, the complete OS and
Exchange, or just the databases.

If it's just the databases, stop the Exchange services and rename all of the
mdbdata, mtadata, dsadata, etc. directories to old. Choose the 'Loss
Restore' in BackupExec. It restores the databases and logs to disk, starts
the services (prompts you first), and then commits any uncommitted log files
to the database.

RE: Repost: Question on log files with online backup

2002-04-12 Thread Donna Benefield

One more thing :)

When you restore the databases, you also have to restore all of the mdbdata,
mtadata, dsadata, etc., directories on the other volumes from the NT backup.
Otherwise you will have problems starting the services. That's why I do a
full backup nightly.
