RE: OWA 2003 Loading.(Somewhat fixed.)

2010-05-04 Thread Peter Johnson
I had a similar issue with urlscan many years ago where the trailing period
"." Was in the ini and stopped attachment downloading. Very frustrating until I
tracked it down and sorted it out. Got me a job offer though !!! :)

"need" is a funny word. It's not a requirement.

You can use the IIS W3SVC logs and the urlscan logs to see what verbs are being
denied and if truly files are not being found.

Thanks for your response. I tried your suggestion. But no success.
After some googling I found the article

with the malformed MIME content as per the KB. This is only applicable to
mails coming from one client. I do guess it's the source mail server
configuration issue and wouldn't be able to do anything.
Do you have any other thoughts.

Have you tried (with Outlook closed) to delete the following files:

Then open Outlook again to see if the issue has resolved?

Hi
In my E2K7 SP2, I am facing an issue with attachments.
I cannot see the attachments in Outlook 2003 or 2007. But If I use OWA I am

How can I get the attachment visible in Outlook. This happens to mail coming

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Public folders won't all move for Exchange 2003-2007 migration

2010-05-04 Thread Ben N
So I'm following the steps to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.
I've done this successfully in my test environment, but my production
environment just won't move the public folder replicas.

I have confirmed that all my public folders only have my exch2007 as the
only replica.
The next step is to go to my exch2003 public folder store database, right
click, and "Move All Replicas" to my exch 2007.

now in my test environment this worked great. but in my production there are
about 25 folders that just won't finish the move. There's nothing special or
common about them that i can see. some are big; some are small.

i've been trying to do this for a few months. I've rebooted my server in
that course a few times.

any ideas?

Upgrade to 2010 first?

2010-05-04 Thread Shields, Anthony
Nearly every summer we rebuild our domain from scratch, including Exchange.
This year, we will be upgrading several things including Win2k8 R2 and E2k10
server.

Typically when we do this, we exmerge the existing store - in this case a E2k7
- to PST files, which are then exmerged into the new store.

We currently have many users with mailboxes near or over 2gigs. I have had
issues previously trying to import large PST files and am hoping to avoid them
if possible.

I believe E2k10 has brought back the ease of export/import PST files and was
wondering if it would make sense to upgrade the E2k7 server to 2010 and then
export the PST files - Wipe the equipment clean and reinstall 2010, importing
those PST files?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

It doesn't. Mr. Cooper was correct that port/DNS issues are the problem, but he

https://autodiscover.company.com/AutoDiscover/AutoDiscover.xml
Failed testing this potential AutoDiscover URL
 Test Steps
Attempting to resolve the host name autodiscover.company.com in DNS.

My question to you is, why does it need port 443 open for the server hosting
the domain evolvent.com? This is a seperate server than the server hosting
autodiscovery.

2010-05-04 Thread Shields, Anthony
It's what we do in the school to maintain and improve our technology. We
rebuild, recreate and improve on what we had, deploy new hardware/software,
improve infrastructure.

Instead of tacking things on down the road-during the year, we rebuild
-incorporating all of those things during the summer.

We repurpose servers. What once was high volume, no longer needs the super
server. What once was a physical server, is now a virtual server.

Unlike corporate world, we attempt to leave our stuff untouched during the
school year. For the summer break, we get to start fresh when downtime is near
irrelevant.

RE: Setting up Active Sync on E2K10

2010-05-04 Thread Dan Cooper
I think Auto discovery (dns settings) is there to simplify setting up
devices/applications and to allow for smooth transitions between legacy and new
servers.

The bottom line is your phone...needs to connect to the server acting as the
front end for active sync. If this is being blocked active sync will not
work...Which I think thats what the error is saying.

You can connect over http, but https is recommended

Indeed oops! One reason for errorss after everything else seems ok... can be
non default security permissions on the user accounts. But why this would
change for everyone over night is beyond me. A quick test would be to go to the
security settings for the user you are testing with and set the security to
default and set inheritance. Fixed some non-specific errors for my exchange
2010.

Schools are a unique I.T. environment to be sure, but wow they sure don't
use this rebuild-from-scratch approach at the schools around here!

I've found software development to be amazingly similar to the practice of
I.T. There's a guy out there (used to work in the Excel bus. unit at MS)
who has blogged extensively on best practices, etc... and this post from
almost exactly 10 years and a month ago seems remarkably apropos:

Just substitute:
users for customers...
applications for functions/APIs...
fixing something for reading code
starting over for writing code
etc...

RE: Exchange 2003 to 2010 issues

2010-05-04 Thread Paul Steele
I've just discovered that I made a mistake during the installation
process. In the install wizard when it asks for the Internet facing name
for the server I put in smtp.acadiau.ca instead of exchange.acadiau.ca.
I'm not exactly sure what issues this mistake will cause, but it
definitely messes up the certificate installation process. I've looked
though the various dialogs to find out where I can change that setting
but it doesn't appear anywhere obvious. Is there a quick solution to
this mistake?

Mail delivery seems to be working properly now, so I think I've got the
various connectors configured properly. The 2003 server does not have a
certificate and I haven't installed a UC cert on 2010 yet. I'm reading
everything I can find on the topic before tackling the certificate
install. After the way things went today I doubt that things will go
problem free...

picture after this first phase since all the mail boxes are still on
Exchange 2003. I want to get backups, certificates, and other misc stuff
working on Exchange 2010 before moving mailboxes.

One weird problem that has surfaced since the 2010 install is a problem
with Public folders. When I try to look at the folder in System Manager
on Exch2003, I get the error

"The HTTP service used by Public Folders is not available, possible
causes are that Public stores are not mounted and the Information Store
service is not running."

I'm getting lots of google hits for this error but none specifically
relating to an Exchange 2010 upgrade. The folders show up fine in
Outlook, but not in OWA or System Manager. This issue did not come up in
our test lab.

That would tend to indicate that the mail is being routed through the
Exchange 2003 server and you don't have a properly scoped

We've been preparing for a transition from Exchange 2003 to Exchange
2010. We've done various test installs in our lab and thought we had
everything figured out. Unfortunately we're having mail delivery
problems after completing the install. The actual installation went
without problems. We have a shared address space, with some users on our
Exchange server and some on a Unix host. The biggest issue we're having
is sending to users who are not on our Exchange server. We've set the
Accepted Domains for "acadiau.ca" to Internal Relay, but when we try to
send to usern...@acadiau.ca that does not exist in the Exchange name
space, the message bounces (it never makes it to our Unix smart host).
We've compared things with our test servers and everything looks
correct. At this point we've very confused what we're doing wrong. If
anyone has a suggestion what to look for we really appreciate it.

You will have to edit the ExternalURLs on all the Exchange virtual directories.

Personally, I find this easier to do via EMS; but most of them can be edited on
the Server Configuration -> Client Access tabs.

I’ve just discovered that I made a mistake during the installation process. In
the install wizard when it asks for the Internet facing name for the server I
put in smtp.acadiau.ca instead of exchange.acadiau.ca. I’m not exactly sure
what issues this mistake will cause, but it definitely messes up the
certificate installation process. I’ve looked though the various dialogs to
find out where I can change that setting but it doesn’t appear anywhere
obvious. Is there a quick solution to this mistake?

Mail delivery seems to be working properly now, so I think I’ve got the various
connectors configured properly. The 2003 server does not have a certificate and
I haven’t installed a UC cert on 2010 yet. I’m reading everything I can find on
the topic before tackling the certificate install. After the way things went
today I doubt that things will go problem free…

That might be it. I had sort of wanted to keep Exchange 2010 out of the picture
after this first phase since all the mail boxes are still on Exchange 2003. I
want to get backups, certificates, and other misc stuff working on Exchange
2010 before moving mailboxes.

One weird problem that has surfaced since the 2010 install is a problem with
Public folders. When I try to look at the folder in System Manager on Exch2003,
I get the error

“The HTTP service used by Public Folders is not available, possible causes are
that Public stores are not mounted and the Information Store service is not
running.”

I’m getting lots of google hits for this error but none specifically relating
to an Exchange 2010 upgrade. The folders show up fine in Outlook, but not in
OWA or System Manager. This issue did not come up in our test lab.

That would tend to indicate that the mail is being routed through the Exchange
2003 server and you don’t have a properly scoped send-connector on the 2010
side.

Yes, I had already done that. I’m a bit confused now though. I stopped/started
the SMTP virtual host (on the EXCH2003 side), and that seemed to solve the
problem. Things seem to be working so I guess whatever was broken/stuck is ok.
At least it’s working…

2010-05-04 Thread Shields, Anthony
The article does ring some truth and we are moving away from redoing the
servers every year - as we didn't do them last year, because we knew R2 and
E2k10 would be out this year - along with Office 2k10. All of which we're
upgrading to in July.

Hopefully after this, I can go for a few years without redoing.

Information Store unmounts

2010-05-04 Thread Maglinger, Paul
Has anyone seen any instances where the Private and Public Stores in
Exchange 2003 just unmounts without any apparent reason? So far it's
only happened once (knock on wood). With my diagnostic logging for
MSExchangeIS System General set at Medium, Private General at Maximum,
the only thing I saw in the Event Viewer was that the stores unmounted.
All the services were running. I haven't found anything that points to
what may have caused this. I ran checks against the priv1.edb,
pub1.edb, and e00.log files and the results came back clean. But I
couldn't simply remount the stores, but had to clear out the logs and
run eseutil /r before they would mount again. Odd?

RE: Exchange 2003 to 2010 issues

2010-05-04 Thread Paul Steele
Ok, I read your Windows IT Pro article, which was very good.
Unfortunately it didn't help and I'm officially *very* frustrated now.
After fiddling with send/receive connectors for last couple of days, I
still haven't gotten mail to flow within our new Exchange 2003/2010
organization properly. My ultimate goal is to have mail arrive on
Exchange 2010 and if necessary route mail to Exchange 2003 for mailboxes
that are still on the 2003 server. At this point no mail boxes have been
moved, although I've created a couple of test 2010 accounts. I can send
mail from 2003 users to 2010 mailboxes, and I can send mail externally
directly to 2003 mailboxes or 2010 mailboxes. Unfortunately I cannot
get mail working from 2010 mailboxes to 2003 mailboxes, or externally
through the 2010 server to 2003 mailboxes. This issue is also causing
Public Folder Replication problems.

After the 2010 install, two routing group connectors were created
(Exch2003-Exch2010 in the First Administrative Group side, and
Exch2010-Exch2003 in the newly created Exchange Admin Group). I haven't
modified those in any way. I also had an existing SMTP Connector with a
Unix smart host specified. The SMTP address space is * and applies to
the entire organization. This SMTP connector also appears on the 2010
server as a Send Connector. Finally, there is an SMTP Virtual Server
under the SMTP protocol section of the First Admin Group, with no smart
host specified.

After the installation, I created scoped Send Connector for SMTP/*,
specifying our Unix smart host and the 2010 server as the source server.
Under Accepted Domains, I added acadiau.ca as an Internal Relay. There
is also another SMTP Virtual Host in the Exchange Admin Group.

I actually had this all working in my ESXi test environment but due to
some disk issues I lost my VMs. I thought I remembered how I had
configured things but obviously I don't have a very good memory. I've
gotten totally confused about what send connectors, SMTP virtual hosts,
smart hosts, accepted domains, etc, etc, that I need. I think I've tried
every obvious configuration. I know it should be simple, but it seems to
have beaten me.

What am I missing?

Mail delivery seems to be working properly now, so I think I've got the
various connectors configured properly. The 2003 server does not have a
certificate and I haven't installed a UC cert on 2010 yet. I'm reading
everything I can find on the topic before tackling the certificate
install. After the way things went today I doubt that things will go
problem free...

How have you configured namespace sharing, i.e., namespaces vs. SSL

That might be it. I had sort of wanted to keep Exchange 2010 out of the
picture after this first phase since all the mail boxes are still on
Exchange 2003.

Yes, I had already done that. I'm a bit confused now though. I
stopped/started the SMTP virtual host (on the EXCH2003 side), and that

whatever was broken/stuck is ok. At least it's working...

Odd?

Windows SMTP Service DNS query Id vulnerabilities

1. *Advisory Information*

Title: Windows SMTP Service DNS query Id vulnerabilities
Advisory Id: CORE-2010-0427
Advisory URL:
Date published: 2010-05-04
Date of last update: 2010-05-04
Vendors contacted: Microsoft
Release mode: User release

2. *Vulnerability Information*

Class: Predictable from Observable State [CWE-341], Insufficient
Verification of Data Authenticity [CWE-345]
Impact: Security bypass
Remotely Exploitable: Yes
Locally Exploitable: No
CVE Name: CVE-2010-1689, CVE-2010-1690
Bugtraq ID: 39908, 39910

3. *Vulnerability Description*

DNS spoofing and cache poisoning attacks have been known security
threats that result from design weaknesses of the DNS protocol since the
early 1990s as described by Christopher Schuba [1] and Paul Vixie [2].
In 1997 a practical implementation of a blind remote DNS cache poisoning
attack that relies solely on exploiting the predictability of the ID
field of DNS query packets was described by Arce and Kargieman [3]. This
was followed up by further refinements and advancement of attack
techniques by Vagner Sacramento [4] and Joe Stewart [5] in 2002. Amit
Klein further investigated query Id predictability in BIND version 9[6]
and Windows DNS[7] server implementations in 2007. In 2008 a much
publicized advancement of the DNS cache poisoning technique was
disclosed by Dan Kaminsky [8] in conjunction with the release of
security fixes by several vendors. Microsoft's MS08-037
[http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-037.mspx]Security
Bulletin addressed those DNS spoofing techniques in Windows DNS client
and server software.

In light of the 16-year saga of discovery and refinement of DNS
poisoning attacks and protection techniques in January 2009 the Internet
Engineering Task Force published RFC5452 with guidelines to make DNS
more resilient against forged answer attacks.[9]

While researching the fixes issued by Microsoft in Microsoft's Security
Bulletin MS10-024
[http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms10-024.mspx]
published April 13, 2010 Nicolas Economou discovered two vulnerabilities
in Windows SMTP Service and Microsoft Exchange . These vulnerabilities
were fixed by the patches referenced in MS10-024 but were not disclosed
in the vendor's security bulletin and did not have an unique
vulnerability identifier assigned to them. As a result, the guidance and
the assessment of risk derived from reading the vendor's security
bulletin may overlook or misrepresent actual threat scenarios.
Nicolas found that the Windows SMTP Service does its own DNS resolution
of MX records rather that use the DNS resolver from the operating system
while investigating CVE-2010-0024
[http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2010-0024].
Furthermore, he found that the patch referenced in MS10-024 fixed two
severe bugs that were not disclosed as such in the bulletin and had no
CVE identifiers assigned to them. Basic analysis of the vulnerabilities
disclosed in this advisory indicates that the threat of DNS spoofing
attacks against Windows SMTP service and Microsoft Exchange or of
exploitation of CVE-2010-0024 was underestimated in MS10-024.
An attacker may leverage the two previously undisclosed vulnerabilities
fixed by MS10-014 to spoof responses to any DNS query sent by the
Windows SMTP service trivially. DNS response spoofing and cache
poisoning attacks are well known to have a variety of security
implications with impact beyond just Denial of Service and Information
Disclosure as originally stated in MS10-024.
As a result the importance of deploying MS10-024 patches may be
miss-represented in the vendor's security bulletin. Organizations using
vulnerable packages should consider re-assessing patch deployment
priorities in view of the additional information provided in this advisory.

3.1. *Predictable DNS query ID*

[CVE-2010-1689 | 39908] Prior to MS10-024 the Windows SMTP Service
generated DNS queries with trivially guessable values in the transaction
ID field. The issue was addressed in MS10-024 by adding a call to the
'CAsyncDns::GenerateRandWord' method when building the DNS query.

3.2. *Missing validation of DNS responses*

[CVE-2010-1690 | 39910] Prior to MS10-024 the Windows SMTP Service did
not check that the value of the ID field of a DNS response received from
the network actually matched the value of the ID field of a
corresponding DNS query packet previously sent. Th

No, it does not.

Exchange 2003 would run on Windows 2000, with somewhat limited functionality
(for example, RPC/HTTP requires that Exchange run on Windows 2003). Exchange
2003 only required a mixed-mode AD (i.e., one directly upgraded from Windows
NT).

You could, in fact, run into schema collision issues around inetOrgPerson
schema definitions. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649.
