OL 2007 seems to be a little less finicky than 2010. If you do things
quickly and leave out step 5 the message does seem to get lost - ie not in
original folder, deleted items or recoverable. It may be that this is what
our friend did. He isn't exactly a power user. It's certain that he didn't
know what he was doing. He deleted a bunch of to-keep mail along with the
to-delete stuff.

Thanks for all your help.

First mention I've seen of Outlook 2010. Try the same steps from an earlier
version.Send/Receive dropdown list has a this folder sync in earlier
versions. Step (3) isn't necessary. I've done similar steps in rapid
succession all the time, using OL 2007 and 2003.

As for this guy, I'd start to wonder about the reliability or accuracy of
the problem reporting. Exchange 2003 is not known to lose messages as you
describe without user help or some other unusual factor.

My OST is now rebuilt and it's back to being a little flaky about how it
works. It seems to cause problems if I rush it too much. Here's what I
mean

1) Send a message to self

2) Delete it from the Inbox

3) Do Update Folder on the Inbox

4) Delete if from Deleted Items

5) Do Update Folder on Deleted Items

6) Check recover deleted items

If I do the above in rapid succession, the message doesn't show up in
recover deleted items and it doesn't matter how long I wait, it's just gone.
If I do the above and pause a minute or two after steps 3 and 5, it shows up
in recover deleted items. (Update folder is a feature of Office 2010. I
don't remember if it was there in previous versions.) I'm guessing the
problems with my tests have been just that I've been rushing things too much
rather than that the OST was corrupt.

Note: when this guy deleted his messages the other day, I had him check
recover deleted items and they weren't there. I then had him check for them
on a different computer and they weren't there either in the original folder
or in recover deleted items. I'm guessing they're just gone but any
suggestions are appreciated.

Deleted message recovery is a server-based feature. If the messages aren't
seen in the recoverable list and were deleted within the deleted item
retention period of the server, then it would stand to reason they were not
deleted as far as the server is concerned - i.e. the deleting from the
(apparently corrupt) OST didn't synchronize to the server. So look to see
if they might be back where they originally were, or in the deleted items
folder. In theory, the messages cannot totally vanish unless they were
deleted from the Recover Deleted Items view.

Disabling cache mode seems to have done the trick. I re-enabled and now it
says it is going to take 7 hours to rebuild the OST! It looks like that
just dropped down to 1 hour.

So, are the deleted messages in the original OST? Is there a way of
recovering them? I didn't delete it, I just renamed.

Thanks for your help.

I run a full every day.

Last night I dismounted the store, moved the logs to a backup folder, remounted
the store, and logs started generating properly. This morning, my BE job
finished successfully again, but again, the logs were not cleared.

I've put in a ticket with Symantec, but after my last ticket with them, (A
level-2 critical that was open for over 2 months... for something they would
tell me verbally was a known issue, but would never provide me with
documentation of it.), I'm not holding my breath.

The good thing is that I know I can manually clear the logs if necessary.

RE: Corrupt Exchange Logs

You should have application event log entries on your exchange server from ESE*
and VSS* that define when backup starts, when it ends, what kind of backup it
is, etc. etc. etc.

Exchange 2003 SP2 - RPC/HTTPs

2010-06-24 Thread Sean Martin
Good morning folks,

I was just made aware that I may need to provide RPC/HTTPs services in a
very short amount of time

Exchange 2003 SP2, 1 FE, 2 BE

I already have a cert installed for activesync so I'm just looking for
feedback to ensure I understand the process...

1) Install RPC Proxy on Front-end
2) Conifigure RPC on Front-end via ESM
3) Configure RPC on back-end via ESM
4) Configure RPC virtual directory
5) Setup client and test

Is that pretty much it?

OL 2007 seems to be a little less finicky than 2010. If you do things
quickly and leave out step 5 the message does seem to get lost - ie not
in original folder, deleted items or recoverable. It may be that this
is what our friend did. He isn't exactly a power user. It's certain
that he didn't know what he was doing. He deleted a bunch of to-keep

Thanks for all your help.

First mention I've seen of Outlook 2010. Try the same steps from an
earlier version.Send/Receive dropdown list has a this folder sync
in earlier versions. Step (3) isn't necessary. I've done similar steps
in rapid succession all the time, using OL 2007 and 2003.

As for this guy, I'd start to wonder about the reliability or accuracy
of the problem reporting. Exchange 2003 is not known to lose messages
as you describe without user help or some other unusual factor.

My OST is now rebuilt and it's back to being a little flaky about how it
works. It seems to cause problems if I rush it too much. Here's what I
mean

1) Send a message to self

2) Delete it from the Inbox

3) Do Update Folder on the Inbox

4) Delete if from Deleted Items

5) Do Update Folder on Deleted Items

6) Check recover deleted items

If I do the above in rapid succession, the message doesn't show up in
recover deleted items and it doesn't matter how long I wait, it's just
gone. If I do the above and pause a minute or two after steps 3 and 5,
it shows up in recover deleted items. (Update folder is a feature of
Office 2010. I don't remember if it was there in previous versions.)
I'm guessing the problems with my tests have been just that I've been
rushing things too much rather than that the OST was corrupt.

Note: when this guy deleted his messages the other day, I had him check
recover deleted items and they weren't there. I then had him check for
them on a different computer and they weren't there either in the
original folder or in recover deleted items. I'm guessing they're just
gone but any suggestions are appreciated.

Deleted message recovery is a server-based feature. If the messages
aren't seen in the recoverable list and were deleted within the deleted
item retention period of the server, then it would stand to reason they
were not deleted as far as the server is concerned - i.e. the deleting
from the (apparently corrupt) OST didn't synchronize to the server. So
look to see if they might be back where they originally were, or in the
deleted items folder. In theory, the messages cannot totally vanish
unless they were deleted from the Recover Deleted Items view.

Disabling cache mode seems to have done the trick. I re-enabled and now
it says it is going to take 7 hours to rebuild the OST! It looks like
that just dropped down to 1 hour.

So, are the deleted messages in the original OST? Is there a way of
recovering them? I didn't delete it, I just renamed.

Have you looked at this user's junk senders list?
If not, I would start there. And empty it.
I can pretty much guarantee that removing the content of the junk email senders
list will have zero effect on the amount of spam that the user receives. The
list is designed for a regular sender (such as a group) which doesn't process
an unsubscribe or other stop message correctly, not for a random spam message
(which will be spoofed anyway).

I like to write simple C#-based GUI utilities for my staff to simplify
some of the repetitive tasks such as creating accounts. Now that we’ve
upgraded to Exchange 2010 I have a few utilities that need updating.
I’ve
been doing some Google searches for sample programs and the examples
 refer to a class library Microsoft.Exchange. Unfortunately I haven’t
been
able to find where this class is located in order to add it to my Visual
Studio Project. There are a lot of built-in Microsoft.* components in
the
reference library, but not Microsoft.Exchange. I’ve looked on the
Exchange installation media and also checked on MSDN but don’t see
anything there. Does anyone know where I can find the components needed
for .Net programming for Exchange 2010?

 Thanks!

I already have a cert installed for activesync so I'm just looking for
feedback to ensure I understand the process...

 1) Install RPC Proxy on Front-end

 2) Conifigure RPC on Front-end via ESM

 3) Configure RPC on back-end via ESM

 4) Configure RPC virtual directory

 5) Setup client and test

 Is that pretty much it?

Have you looked at this user's junk senders list?
If not, I would start there. And empty it.
I can pretty much guarantee that removing the content of the junk email
senders list will have zero effect on the amount of spam that the user
receives. The list is designed for a regular sender (such as a group) which
doesn't process an unsubscribe or other stop message correctly, not for a
random spam message (which will be spoofed anyway).

That is an indication of how much WHITE SPACE is in the Exchange database.
In most cases the white space should decrease over time, as it will be used
before the Exchange database increases in physical size.

However going back to your original message, this would be completely
unrelated to that error.

RE: .Net Programming for Exchange 2010

2010-06-24 Thread Michael B. Smith
Just kind-of reinforcing what Rob said, with a bit more detail.

Exchange System Objects (XSO) are the internal Exchange interfaces represented
via Microsoft.Exchange.*. Except for a handful of documentation on data
formats, XSO is undocumented. Given how reflection works in the CLR, obviously
quite a bit is discoverable. Using that undocumented information isn’t a good
idea. The interfaces change DRAMATICALLY from release to release and may change
from service pack to service pack. Since they are undocumented, Microsoft
doesn’t have to keep them compatible.

There are three supported ways to interface to Exchange 2010: MAPI
(challenging, not legally accessible from managed code, but very powerful),
Exchange Web Services (EWS, very much about user mailboxes and address books,
not about system management), and PowerShell (all about management).

There are some exceptions, but basic MAPI is very consistent, ever since
Exchange 5.5. EWS is somewhat new (Exchange 2007 sp1), but I think that all
code written since then is compatible with the current implementation, and
Exchange 2010 adds some new features. PowerShell had breaking changes going
from 2007 - 2010, but I don’t think anything broke between 2007 - 2007 sp1
- 2007 sp2. There may be a breaking change in 2010 going to sp1 in one of the
DAG cmdlets, but if so, it was necessary.

Writing a PowerShell host is fairly simple. It only requires a few dozen lines
of C#. You can, of course, also call complex Windows Forms and Windows
Presentation Format windowing objects from within PowerShell, since it is a
fairly well-behaved .NET environment (I’ve taught workshops in doing this and
this is, I believe, what Rob did himself). From within the PowerShell host, you
load the Exchange profile (just like the Exchange Management Shell) and off you
go… This is exactly what the Exchange Management Console does.

You can even have the PowerShell host as a web page (although that requires the
application pool to have an Exchange administrator as an Identity – not
something to be done lightly). This is what Remote PowerShell does (in
combination with Windows Remote Management).
