RE: Renewing Exchange 2010 wildard certificate

2011-01-14 Thread Michael B. Smith
Exchange uses Windows for certificate management. It just puts a couple of
wrappers around base Windows functionality.

On Windows, in the certificate store, the private key and the public key are
stored together. On "not-Windows" these are generally two separate entities.

CAN you separate them and associate the old private key with a new certificate?
Yes.

It's not worth the hassle though.

It's much easier to generate a new certificate request and get a fully new
certificate.

Subject: Renewing Exchange 2010 wildard certificate

Hi Chaps,

We need to renew our Exchange 2010 cert. We use certificatesforexchange.com.

If you choose the Renew Certificate from the Exchange 2010 EMC SSL screen you
are prompted for the location of a .req file, but our SSL provider hasn't given
us a .req, only a .crt file and the usual intermediate certificate (p7b) file.

Am I doing something wrong?

When we renewed the SSL cert on certificatesforexchange.com we chose the option
to reuse the previous csr information, thinking it would save time. Is that
supported by Exchange 2010?

No danger of that as long as the backup itself doesn't crash. If you are
concerned about THAT possibility then set the shadow storage to a more
reasonable number, such as 5 GB. The current values are way too low for an

ActiveSync on Exchange 2010 SP1

2011-01-14 Thread Troy Werelius
Anyone have any good links or advice on how to setup ActiveSync on 2010 SP1?
My goal here is to support people that are using the latest Android phones so
it would be helpful to know;;

1. Steps to setup ActiveSync ( I think I remember seeing that its on by
default but not sure what else is needed to truly put it into production)
2. Any additional server side software needed to make it work in general
with Android based phones
3. Anything to avoid
4. Any special steps on how to connect the Android phones?
5. Any way to test ActiveSync without an Android phone, i.e. would like to
be able to validate from the outside that ActiveSync is working without error
before involving an Android.
6. Any and all other advice it much appreciated.

Allow Relay over VPN Connection

Get more specifics.

We work with a company that provides job applicant tracking services. All
e-mail communications from the hosted service appeared to come from our
domain. As a result, we preferred that those communications originated from
our environment, so we allowed them to relay off a DMZ based mail gateway.

want an exception for domain spoofing. That is not really a relay, it is an
exception to a common practice of not accepting email from the outside world
that uses your domain as the from.

Personally, I would tell them to pound salt and not use your domain as the from
because it defeats the purpose of from address's, NDR's and all that.

No, we are working with them to archive users email. Someone at our company
wants to have reports emailed to them once a month on certain activity.

One email sent - 18 messages arrives in Inbox

2011-01-14 Thread Gary Babb
I have a user (User_A) that was sent a single test email from another user
(user_Bee), user_A receives the email, plus 17 more messages of the same email.
Which is a total of 18 emails, with the same date/time 1/14/2011 11:15 a.m.,
although the emails arrive at different time.

This only occurs when two users (user_Bee and user_Cee) sends User_A emails. We
are running Exchange 2007 SP1.

As anyone seen this before, and what can be done to resolve the issue.

Could this be a corruption in the Exchange database?

Regards,

Gary

But to be clear about your issue: user_A/B are on the same server? How far

Get more specifics.

We work with a company that provides job applicant tracking services. All
e-mail communications from the hosted service appeared to come from our domain.
As a result, we preferred that those communications originated from our
environment, so we allowed them to relay off a DMZ based mail gateway.

What would cause pickup folder processing to stop?

2011-01-14 Thread Campbell, Rob
Exchange 2007 hub/mailbox server.

It's the last one I have left, to support an application that won't run on 2010.

The application sends email by dropping them in the pickup folder.

Suddenly the server just stopped processing the folder. The .eml files just
sit there. Other than that, the server seems to be working normally.

RE: What would cause pickup folder processing to stop?

2011-01-14 Thread Campbell, Rob
I did restart the transport service.

Part of the app still works, and it's considered "mission critical" so I can't
reboot the server until after business hours.

I turned up the logging on the MSExchangeTransport\Pickup process to High, and
I've restarted the transport service a couple of times. Nothing. Not even in
the event logs.

2011-01-14 Thread Michael B. Smith
Assuming that you've done the typical configuration checks for the pickup
directory (Get-TransportServer | fl *pickup*), and knowing you I'm sure you
have, the only other thing I can think of is back pressure.

You should've gotten an event log warning or error if back pressure kicked
indisk / memory / processor. But pressure on any of those would cause
pickup processing to stop add messages to the outgoing queues.

No event log warnings on backpressure (checked that already).

I've got about 1.75G free on the system volume, 5G free on the DB and 9.5GB on
the logs.

CPU and memory aren't stressed at all.

The server only has one mailbox one it, and a small PF store to support the

RE: co-existence of Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 with Forefront TMG

2011-01-14 Thread Michael B. Smith
Yeah, when you start talking “seamlessly” – that’s a trick question.

Generally speaking, you transition the old environment to new certificates that
support both the old namespaces and a “legacy” namespace and the new
environment has certificates that support the traditional namespace.

From a ISA/TMG/UAG perspective, you create a new listener for the old
environment using the legacy namespace. Once you’ve tested, you then switch the
original listener to point to the new servers. If you’ve configured your
Exchange servers properly, CAS will automatically redirect (or proxy in certain
situations) to the legacy servers.

Can anyone in this group shed some light on how seamlessly Forefront TMG or ISA
Server 2006 can handle client access (OWA, Outlook Anywhere and ActiveSync)
when you have both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 CAS?

I am looking for some guidance on the best migration strategy in this scenario.

RE: What would cause pickup folder processing to stop?

2011-01-14 Thread Campbell, Rob
I haven't created one from scratch, but I made a copy of one of theirs, looked
it over (it seems OK), changed the address to send it to me, and dropped that
in.

Seems like I saw an article by some MS MVP about the pickup directory, that
described creating a new message and dropping it in the folder when I was
digging around for answers. I'll have to go find that back and try it :).

Heh, well if you read it on the internet, it must be true. J

It's worth a try, even if just to rule out the other messages. Failing
that, a reboot is still something to check off when you can. Only today I
was upgrading an RTM DAG to SP1 and noticed that one of the networks was
being reported as partitioned, even though everything checked out and was
working fine as far as the users were concerned. Eventually I rebooted the
node and it came back clean. Just plain weird.

It's the last one I have left, to support an application that won't run on 2010.

Suddenly the server just stopped processing the folder. The .eml files just

RE: What would cause pickup folder processing to stop?

2011-01-14 Thread Campbell, Rob
I think I've checked it all, but just to be sure, when we close for the day I'm
going to move the rest of the messages out to the stash folder, and then stop
the transport service, delete the pickup folder, and then reboot the server and
see if it creates a new one. If it does, I'll try dropping a message in an see
if it gets processed. If that works I'll move the stash back in.

You've probably already checked this, but it the network 100%? DNS,
firewalls, folder permissions, any other non-Exchange reason the server can't
see the folder?

These emails are copies of emails that went to a public folder. The only
reason we're sending them is so that they go to a mailbox and get picked up by
our archive solution, which doesn't archive public folders.

I could get by with a scheduled task and a batch file to copy them to the
pickup directory of another hub server once a day.

Have you yourself manually created an eml file/test message and placed it into
the folder, just to rule out what the app is doing?

I already moved everything out of it to a stash folder, and new messages coming
in still aren't picked up.

Possibly a corrupt email message/file item. Try moving/deleting the oldest
file in the folder and see what happens.

Right - that was exactly my point about a workaround. :)

Nope. I tried.

Cannot process argument transformation on parameter 'PickupDirectoryPath'.
Cannot convert value "\\win2008-lab\d$" to type
"Microsoft.Exchange.Data.LocalLongFullPath". Error:
""\\win2008-lab\d" is not an acceptable path. You must
use an absolute, local, long file path, that does not contain '~'. Parameter
name: path"

Any chance the pickup folder setting will take a UNC?

Well, if a reboot doesn't fix the problem, you've now got a workaround! :)

I think I can rule out the messages as being the problem. Don't know why I
didn't think of it sooner. I copied the first message in the folder into the
pickup directory on another transport server, and it was immediately delivered.

Heh, well if you read it on the internet, it must be true. :)

It's worth a try, even if just to rule out the other messages. Failing that, a
reboot is still something to check off when you can. Only today I was
upgrading an RTM DAG to SP1 and noticed that one of the networks was being
reported as partitioned, even though everything checked out and was working
fine as far as the users were concerned. Eventually I rebooted the node and it
came back clean. Just plain weird.
