Exchange 2010 backup.

2011-05-24 Thread Liby Philip Mathew
Hi All,
A big thank you to the forum!
I transitioned my Exchange to 2010 from 2007 without any issues with the help
of the forum.
I am looking for a backup solution for my Exchange 2010. What are my options?
I have 13 database. Right now I am using Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Windows Server
Backup. I understand WSB cannot be used with tape drive. I have read a
comment on some other forum by Mike that it may backup only the first database.
In exchange 2007 I was using BackupExec 12. But the price for BackupExec 2010
is prohibitive.

Remote XP Users on Ex10

2011-05-24 Thread John Sparrow
Hi All

Hopefully you'll be able to help me, as you guys are the all knowing

We are currently in the process of migrating from Ex2k3 to Ex2k10 and we have a
number of remote users using rpc/http on xp.

When the users are on ex2k3 the rpc/http works correctly, when since we've
migrated their mailboxes over to Ex2k10 their outlook never connects to https.

This works correctly on win7, so I know its not an issue with mailbox settings
or certs to a point

The only way the xp users can use their accounts is by connecting to our vpn
first so it communicates over tcp/ip.

I have also tried various versions of outlook (2003/2007/2010) but still the
same problem :(

We have 2 mailbox servers in a dag, 2 cas servers in the casarray, and 2
barracuda load balancers.

All ex2k10 servers are running sp1 ru2 (8.0.535.0).

Ive tried googling the issue but no resolution yet :(

Any of you lovely people have an idea what could be wrong, or where to look?

Cheers in advance

John

Hi john

We used this format in ex2k3 as this was the only way it'd work :)

And so we just kept the same format after the mailbox migrated, but
unfortunately this didn't fix it for us

RE: Installing 2010 in existing 2003 environment

2011-05-24 Thread Paul Hutchings
Thanks Dave. I'm so surprised that there appears to be no mention at
all of those prep steps on that Microsoft tutorial/guide.

So in order I simply run:

setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions

setup /PrepareSchema

setup /PrepareAD

Presumably this adds permissions but won't break existing permissions
(particularly for things like Blackberry/BES) - nothing documented that
I can see that suggests it will.

Probably a stupid question but one which I can't find a
definitive answer to.

We're running Exchange 2003. I've setup the new build for our
new Exchange 2010 server (combined roles) and have ran the ExBPA and
it's clean.I'm following the guide here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exdeploy2010/default.aspx#Index and
it doesn't make it clear whether I need/should install each role one at
a time, or just click the Typical Exchange Server Installation option?

I have done both with no issue.

Also that guide doesn't appear to say anything about the various
schema/forest updates, which seems a little odd to say the least?

Re: RE: Allow SMTP relay by Group membership?

2011-05-24 Thread Jonathan
Ooo, please tell me more. I'm facing the same scenario, (only we're
under 2007 for the moment - migration to 2010 is in the works).

We have a team of recruiters who use a hosted app called Sendouts. There is
a client for the app that is installed locally and needs to be able to send
smtp mail from the workstations where it is installed.

I'd rather not have to manage static IP Addresses and associated transport
rules if I don't have to.

Thanks,

Jonathan A+, MCSA, MCSE

Subject: Allow SMTP relay by Group membership?

Currently within Exchange 2010, we do not allow anonymous relaying of mail
to the outside except from specific internal IPs via the Relay Connector.

The problem I have is a network application being used that attempts to
send mail from the local workstation via an SMTP tool from within the fat
client of this application. The mail is attempting to send from the local
workstation. If I add the IP of the workstation to the allowed IP list, I am
sure Exchange will relay the mail just fine. But I don't relish the idea of
managing static IPs for these multiple machines, across various subnets.

Is there a way to allow relaying via an AD group membership, either for
the machine or user?

 Thanks for any ideas,
 Robert

if that doesnt work, see if encrypt comm bet client and server is enabled and
uncheck that.

Try each one at a time, I'm on outlook 2010 so i dont recall exaclty.

Hi jean-paul

Both auth settings (outlook and get-outlookanywhere) are set to basic, as this
was what I read to work and what we used on ex2k3

Cheers

John

Email Reporting Software

2011-05-24 Thread shay mayo
Hey – what do you guys like for email reporting software? Pretty much my
requirements are:

1. Easy to use

2. Uses SQL

Looking to run reports on mailbox / distribution group volume and trending.
I used Promodag in the past and it was decent..

Thanks

RE: Exchange 2010 backup.

2011-05-24 Thread Level 5 Lists
We have moved to Veeam for vmware installations (I guess HyperV is coming soon)
, and for on-premise hardware setups we are using Arca/BDR units, which is just
Shadow Protect with Ontracks Recovery piece tied into it for the most part.

The largest client we manage is @ 1.2TB with 6 Exchange DB's , we moved from
BEX 2010, to Veeam onto a Data Domain De-Dupe unit and haven't looked back.
With 13 databases it sounds like your much larger than that, so the usual YMMV
applies :)

Hi All,
A big thank you to the forum!

Subject: Installing 2010 in existing 2003 environment

Probably a stupid question but one which I can't find a definitive answer to.

We're running Exchange 2003. I've setup the new build for our new Exchange
2010 server (combined roles) and have ran the ExBPA and it's clean.

I'm following the guide here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exdeploy2010/default.aspx#Index and it
doesn't make it clear whether I need/should install each role one at a time, or
just click the Typical Exchange Server Installation option?

Also that guide doesn't appear to say anything about the various schema/forest
updates, which seems a little odd to say the least?

Thanks,
Paul

RE: Public Folders losing email address

2011-05-24 Thread Brown, Larry
James,
Yes, it helps a lot! We don't have that many PB's, so I'm going to
disable/enable per your suggestion.

This is one of those unknowns that was bugging me. Now I know why it's
happening!

Thank you very much!!!

Subject: RE: Public Folders losing email address

Yes, I figured out one way to fix it on my support call with Microsoft when we
first started migrating to Exchange 2010. For us, the issue stemmed from a
particular MAPI attribute that was not stamped in Exchange 5.5. For us it was
the MAPI attribute: PR_PF_PROXY_REQUIRED

First, get PFDAVAdmin and run it against your Exchange 2003 or 2007 server. Or
you can also use ExFolders against your Exchange 2007. Find one of the problem
public folders and look at the Property Editor for that particular folder. If
you look for the aforementioned MAPI attribute, it will probably not be defined
(blank). The default for this attribute is True when mail-enabled from
Exchange 2003+. You can also double-check PR_PF_PROXY is assigned some value
while you're there as well.

If it is just a few you can mail disable and then mail-enable those public
folders from Exchange 2007 (probably the best way).

If you had a lot like we did, then you can use PFDAVAdmin or ExFolders, to set
this attribute to True. Please note that if you do use PFDAVAdmin or
ExFolders, sometimes it will create a new AD directory object as representative
when it gets stamped with the e-mail address policy that applies to it (doesn't
always happen!). If it does happen, it will more than likely say that the
e-mail address is already in use when you then go to assign the old address.
So unless you can find that original AD object and delete it (in Exchange
System Objects in AD) you won't be able to reuse the e-mail address. For us,
however, the e-mail is still routed to the folder WITHOUT bouncing (at least
while there is an Exchange 2003 object still so far).

That is why I recommended just disabling/re-enabling, unless you have to deal
with several thousand public folders like we did.

I found a loose reference to this issue in regards to Exchange 2007 when I
originally came across this problem (at the bottom of the page):
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webdav_101/archive/2009/08/14/howto-mail-enable-mail-disable-and-view-mail-settings-for-a-public-folder-with-cdoex-and-cdoexm.aspx

If the public folder was migrated from Exchange 5.5 and will not mail enable or
disable, then the pf_proxy_required may not be set.

You may receive a c1038a21 error message when you try to use Exchange System
Manager to look at the properties of a public folder

3- Click on ADD-Select other folder properties-ok
4- under the property box select PR_PF_PROXY_REQUIRED- under value type 1 and

Hope this helps..

Subject: Public Folders losing email address

We are testing the procedure for shutting down Exchange 2003 in an Exchange
2007 environment. We had to keep E03 for a while due to a software connector
pointing to the Public Folders that wasn't compatible with E07 for a long time.

That has been resolved, so we're ready to move the PF's to E07 and be done with
the old boat anchor server that E03 is on.

But during testing we noticed that old Public folders that were originally
created on the Exchange 5.5 server, then moved to Exchange 2003, do not have
their email attributes when moved to Exchange 2007 servers as seen in the
Public Folder Management Console. Trying to send an email to the PF fails.

In production, the Public Folder Management Console also doesn't see the email
attributes, but the PF's are still receiving email because they are on E03 and
only replicated to the Hub Transports.

This is not the end of the world, as there aren't that many old PF's involved.
After the move it would only take us an hour or less to generate new email
attributes.

Just wanted to know if anyone has run in to this before?
