Rights required to mail enable accounts

2008-07-17 Thread Stuart Pittwood
Hi,

Can anyone tell me, or point me to a source which details what rights I
need to grant a user in order for them to mail-enable user accounts
(Exchange 2003 SP2).

Send As .... am I going insane?

2008-05-01 Thread Stuart Pittwood
Hi all,

It's been some time since I've done any exchange admin, so it could well be
that dementia has started to set in ..

I'm sure that in Exchange 2003 there was a 'send as' permission on the
mailbox permissions. Am I going mad or have MS changed something on me?

If they've taken this away, how do I achieve the same effect?

It's Exchange 2003, SP2 in a Windows 2003 domain.

Thanks

Stu

This may be a total shot in the dark - but have you
checked the amount of disk free space on the Exchange server? We recently had a
similar issue and it turned out we were running out of space.

Personally speaking, I prefer not having clients
use Outlook Rich Text messages.

There is a good chance the problem would not have
occurred had this been sent in plain text or HTML.  Though not your issue
specifically, note the workaround here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q299438

"Operation Failed" is a generic error and
is almost always some little quirk in Outlook.  That doesn't seem to be

This is going to sound totally picky.

How is the sender including these documents?
Are they embedded into a rich text email?  Does this person use Word as
their email editor?  Does the problem still exist when a message is sent
in plain text with multiple attachments?

The users get the little envelope in the system tray when mail arrives in

Is there anyway to show the lil evelope when mail arrives into either
mailbox?

I am guessing you are using Exchange 2000. We are working with
Microsoft on this same issue. We were told this was by design. After
much discussion with them over this we are close to getting a change
made that would give the administrator an option to keep or delete the
NDR's.

ESMTP wasn't addressed by the RFC and older SMTP servers / some firewalls only allow a
subset of rfc 821 try the ehlo fullyqualifieddomain.com if not you may have to get

What if you're manually sending a mail from E2K server (telnetting port 25)?
Is there a second mail server showing up in nslookup? Using this one (via
telnet and/or connector/smarthost) is also not working?
You also can try to change the internet message settings for that domain...
And then you can create a connector for this domain and change the default
settings (helo instead of ehlo etc.)

Hi all,

I'm hoping you can help me with this problem.

When sending to a particular destination the queue is holding the message
with the following error, SMTP Protocol error occured. I can however, send
mail to this domain from another account (hotmail etc).

At first I thought it could be because our service provider had neglected to
add a PTR record for our mail server. Thi has now been corrected but the
problem still persists.

We are running WIn2K SP2, Exchange 2000 SP2 with the admin patch and the new
smtp patch.

Can anyone tell me what causes this? or is it exchange saying "i really
don't know why I can't send this"

How can I troubleshoot this?

any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Stu

Well... if you bring the 2nd server up in the site... and leave the the
1st server up.  Exchange will automatically update the user's mapi
profile.  Some users may have to open, close, and then reopen their
client to reconnect to the proper server.   Once everyone is over

removing server from org

Hi,

I going to remove the 1st server from our Exchange 2000 (SP2) organisation. Here are
my thoughts

1) replicate off all public folders to another server
2) move all mailboxes to another server
3) rehome the address books and schedule+ info
4) uninstall exchange from this box.

then I have to (for reasons to long to go into) reformat the existing box reinstall
exchange and move everything back.

have I missed anything? anything I should watch out for?

  Hi
  Stuart,
I had an "almost" exact same problem as you are
experiencing. After much guessing by myself,  Microsoft came up with the
  solution:-
The first suggestion was to try :-
"I have a couple of suggestions that
  may help
address this issue. The first thing that I
  recommend is starting Outlook
with the /cleanprofile switch. If that does
not have and effect on the
situation, try starting Outlook with the
  /cleanreminders, /cleanviews, and
    /CleanFreeBusy
For more information on these and other
  startup switches available in
Outlook, please see the following knowledge
  base article.
  OL2000:
  Additional Command-Line Switches (Q197180)
  http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q197/1/80.asp "
  This for me
cleared up the problem TEMPORARILY and it reared its ugly head about a week
  later
  Then they came
up with this one which has worked for me now for over 2 weeks and not had a
  hint of the problem recurring…..
  Read
  Q299046

  Q245822
  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q245822
  For me this
solved the problem we use Norton Anti Virus Corporate Editon and sure enough
it was scanning the M Drive…
  Hopefully this
  helps you out.
  Cheers

KMS Default Password not accepted

2002-03-26 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi,

I've just installed KMS into an existing organisation. The installation went without
a hitch, until I try to actually use KMS, when I right click Key Manager and choose
properties I am asked for a password, which I enter (the default password is password
I believe) and it then tells me that

"The password you have typed is not a valid KMS password or KMS was unable to respond
to the validation request"

I have also tried users (in this case Administrator) password and get the same error.

I have setup KMS in our test in envriorment exactly the same as I have done on the
live server and had no problems

Any ideas?

constantly on, on running netmon I found that there is a constant stream of traffic
between the exchange box and on of our DCs. I know that Exchange 2000 relies heavily
on AD & the global catalog, but this is a steady stream between these two machines
(which doesn't let up out of hours).

Any help appreciated

KMS Password

2002-03-21 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi,

I have just installed KMS in our test network, however when I right click on
properties on the Key Manager server I am asked for a password for the account under
which I'm logged in as. The users password doesn't work, the KMS default password
also doesn't work. The account I'm logging in as is a full Exchange Administrator.

Have I missed something stupid and blindingly obvious?

Thanks

I'll bet you a virtual 6-pack the receiver has some rule moving that message
to another folder. Typically it is moving to the "deleted items" folder and
when the (receiver) user shuts down outlook it will empty that folder. The
(receiver) user will swear that isn't true, then when you show them they
will swear they didn't do it.

Then you get to tell the sender all about it and let them wonder why
"receiver" does that to them

This happens a couple of times a year at my site. Very humorous.

seem to be any rules setup on the client to dump mail from this user.

Every other user can send to this person and receive from the guy whose mail

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if this is doable or not, we're running Exchange 2000 SP2
to handle all of out mail.

We have an aggreement with one of our partners where they e-mail us the
details of a case, we then print the email (with the word attachments) and
then act on it.

Is it possible for this to be automated, such as:

The email is dropped into a public folder which then prints the email and
any attachments to a specific printer and then forwards a copy of the mail
onto another mailbox while filing the original in a subfolder of the public
folder?

I think I could do it all with rules except the printing bit, every case
that comes in will have two or more attached word documents.

Thanks

MSDN is good if you know what you're looking for. If you want to use
VBScript, I do like the VBScript documentation and also the book
VBScript Programmer's Reference from Wrox.

Don't forget to check out Siegfried's website (www.cdolive.com) when
it's back up (you can still get the old info) as he may already have
something to do this. Or at least something to get you started.

IIS & Exchange 2000

2002-03-04 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Here is the situation.

We have Exchange 2000 (SP2) installed on a Win2K SP2 box which also has ISA (SP1)
installed.

Because ISA is installed I have had to change the default port number in IIS (default
site) to something other than 80 or 8080 as those are the ports that ISA listens on.

When I change the port numbers the public folder part of system manager stops working
and just keeps prompting me for a username/password (I assume it's trying to look
through the firewall).

The only way I can get to the public folders is to disable all the ISA services and
set the port back to 80 on the default web site.

Any ideas how I can solve this?

Thanks

Errors when accessing public folders

2002-03-01 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Hi all,

Hoping you can help me with these.

When I try to access the public folders from within Exchange system manager
(on the server) I am prompted for a username & password, when I've entered
the correct details (or an account which has those rights) I get the error
80070005, Access Denied

When I do the same from a client with the exchange system manager installed
I get the error 80004005 (no password prompt).

I also get these errors if I try to access the prompters of a public folder
instance from within the storage group.

I have been through the KB and technet and checked anything I came up with
such as the host header in IIS, the SSL in IIS etc to no effect.

Can anyone help me with this or at least point me in the right direction.

The only other thing worth mentioning is that ISA Server is installed on the
same box of Exchange.

Thanks in advance

Stuart Pittwood

Whenever I try to browse the public folder tree I am prompted for a password, none of

which uses public folders.

Any ideas how to resolve this? or which permissions need to be changed?

Windows XP & Exchange 2000 Admin Tools

2002-01-03 Thread Stuart Pittwood

I have a Windows XP Pro workstation which I need to install the Exchange 2000 admin
tools onto.

When I try to install them from the CD it says that I don't have the Windows 2000
Admin Tools installed (which I guess is true as they don't work on XP) but I do have
the .net Beta 3 tools installed.

Anyone got a way round this?

Thanks both for your responses

I thought it had to be ticked once and would affect all users.

The box is shown as ticked when you check the properties as each user?

Hi,

I'm trying to use public folders for the 1st time and would appreciate a
little help (sure it's a check box I've missed).

I have created a folder to hold other contacts, I am the owner and a few
other people are reviewers with the rest having no access.

Now, when I compose a new message, click to I see the GAL, my own
contacts and the new folder as seperate address books.

When any of the other users compose a message they only see the GAL &
their own contacts, how do I get outlook to show the new folder as an
address book?

They can see the folder by going though the public folder tree.

Thanks & and sorry about the "lameness" of the question :-)

Hi all,

The exchange server I inherited has got a name that is separated by an
underscore character. Now that we are looking to migrate to Win2K with
AD
and then to Exchange 2000, I'm looking for a way to automatically change
the
name on the client PCs without visiting every single one of them. Can
anyone
help? I haven't been able to track down any article on this.

Buenas.

nada, he probado con
diferentes usuarios y permisos, y nada

Bueno,

Un saludete a todos

I think this isn't a security flaw but by design, since the recipient is
in the domain the server is responsible for it accepts and sends the
mail.
Your server does not appear to allow relaying outside your domain, which
is good.
It would be a bad thing if it would accept rcpt to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] when helo is sent from outside your
domain.

I am not sure about this, but i think that if you would block this you
are not gonna be able to receive mail at all.

relay problems

2001-11-21 Thread Stuart Pittwood

I've just tested our mail server with www.abuse.net/relay.htm

and on test 8 it appears to fail.

>>> RSET
<<< 250 2.0.0 Resetting
>>> MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
<<< 250 2.1.0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] OK
>>> RCPT TO:<"[EMAIL PROTECTED]">
<<< 250 2.1.5 "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"@kingswinford.dudley.sch.uk
Although our server doesn't relay the message it accepts it and
generates an NDR, our ISP is refusing to allow us access to their smtp &
pop3 servers until this is closed. How do I solve this one in Exchange
2000
Thanks
