Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method...
Title: Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method... Step 5 says Create replicas of the public folders on the new server. When the contents of the folders have replicated (do wait a little while!), remove the replicas from the old server. What is the best way to accomplish this? I've gone to the replication page on each public folder and selected for them to be replicated on the new server I'm adding. I did this several days ago. Should this be sufficient (minus any new material)? I've also set the home server for each public folder to the new server. Does this take effect immediately or do I have to restart any services. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks for the help, Kelly List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method...
What you've done should be sufficient. You can check the home server of a public folder by looking at its properties - the home server is listed at the bottom of the general tab (I think it's general, anyway) Neil Hobson Silversands http://www.silversands.co.uk Microsoft Gold Certified Partner For Enterprise Systems For Collaborative Solutions -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: 22 February 2002 15:00 Posted To: Sunbelt Exchange List Conversation: Step 5 of the Ed Crowley Server Move method... if win2k is the OS, SP the Exchange server and OS to the latest ... and read up on the white papers -Original Message- From: Dave Vantine [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 19, 2001 08:17 To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Ed Crowley Server Move Method Hi I am currently running Exch 5.5 sp4 on a NT 4.0 sp6a + Hot fixes. This machine was the 1st NT machine in the company and was originally configured as a PDC. Exch 5 was then installed on this box (before my time) and has since been upgraded to 5.5. Since then I have added other NT 4 servers several of which are Domain Controllers and one has been promoted to the PDC and the Exch box now functions as a BDC. I am installing HP LH 3000 that I want to migrate my Exch 5.5 to (not anywhere ready for E2k) both for performance issues and getting Exch 5.5 off a Domain Controller. I was going to install NT 4 on the HP but now think that putting W2K may be the better choice. However, it will be the only W2k server in the environment, no AD and a member server of the NT4 Domain. After the server is up running in the Domain, I would then install the Ex 5.5 and Sp4 and follow the E.C. server move method. Are there any pitfalls in my plan that I am not recognizing ? If I do take this path of migration am I creating any added problems/issues down the road when we want to upgrade to E2K ? RE: Ed Crowley Server Move Method
Running Exch55 on W2K is great. Much more stable in my opinion. And having a W2K server in an NT4 domain is no issue at all. There is/was a whitepaper on the MS site regarding installing Exch55 on W2K server. The one thing to remember is that if you choose to run OWA on the Exch server, you will need to make sure you don't let SMTP be installed along with IIS during the W2K install process. Other than that, once you SP Exch up to SP4, you will be fine. -Original Message- From: Dave Vantine [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, October 19, 2001 5:17 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: Ed Crowley Server Move Method Hi I am currently running Exch 5.5 sp4 on a NT 4.0 sp6a + Hot fixes. RE: Question regarding Ed Crowley Server Move Method
this issue wasn't how many, since I don't have more than 100. Still, it's the Microsoft Way to make things difficult, by not encouraging their programmers to work with their product advisory people more closely so features that are DESIRED and NEEDED are included in products. Many would disagree with my stance, saying MS relies on third-party developers to add the functionality, which I agree with, but the folks in Redmond, WA sometimes have their heads up their arses, IMHO. I went ahead and set up replication manually for all the public folders, then went about re-homing each folder (again, manually). The replication part was easy, since it can be done from the Public Info Store properties sheet on the server itself (Instances tab) but re-homing wasn't so keen, since the ability to pass a re-home down to sub-folders isn't an option. Such is life. Another lesson learned. Thanks, group, I appreciate everyone's feedback. Sean -Original Message- From: David N. Actually, I thought Neil hobson had the best answer. In the properties page of an upper level folder, there is an Advanced Tab where you can select the Home Server. In the General Tab, you can select Propogate to all sub-folders. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q244/0/42.ASP Does this not carry the Home Server configuration as well? Many would disagree with my stance, saying MS relies on third-party developers to add the functionality, which I agree with, but the folks in Redmond, WA sometimes have their heads up their arses, IMHO. I went ahead and set up replication manually for all the public folders, then went about re-homing each folder (again, manually). The replication part was easy, since it can be done from the Public Info Store properties sheet on the server itself (Instances tab) but re-homing wasn't so keen, since the ability to pass a re-home down to sub-folders isn't an option. Question regarding Ed Crowley Server Move Method
I want to make sure I'm doing this right, as we need to reclaim our old Exchange server and commit it to new use. Step 5 states to make replicas of the public folders on the new server. Is there a good way to do this for ALL public folders? Or do I simply go into each public folder on the list and set up a replication scheme and schedule? I'm a little slow on the uptake of public folder replication between servers in the same site - any info would be appreciated. I don't want to strand any public folders. Exchange 5.5 for both servers, old is running SP3, new is SP4, both on Windows NT Server 4.0 SP6. Thanks, Sean List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
RE: Question regarding Ed Crowley Server Move Method
Public folders are replicated to all servers by default. Make sure they are all rehomed to th new server as per Q152959. These servers should be on the same sp, too. This is what I don't get. (I can hear the hecklers warming up...) Per the KB article, I should follow practices outlined in the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator Guide, chapter 12 and 15. Since I don't HAVE the MS Exchange Server Administrator Guide, I can't easily do that... If I'm told to go out and buy it, I'll sigh, and go do so. Yes it will run in batch mode. Sean, if you have the BORK, pfadmin ? rehome will show the steps to do this. Drew is somewhat of a PFADmin expert now, too. Right, Drew? Ed Crowley Server Move Method
Title: Ed Crowley Server Move Method Hey Folks The errors on my current exchange server and the fact that the previous guy set it up as a bdc and other things running on it has prompted me to move it to a new better stronger faster box only running exchange. I am going to utilize the Ed Crowley method but I had a question I was hoping someone could answer. Is it possible to move users to the new server and place them in recipient containers? Step Two Ed Crowley Server Move Method
Title: Step Two Ed Crowley Server Move Method Exchange 5.5 sp5 on win 4.0 sp 6a (Both machines) In step two of my migrations I am hitting something I don't understand. Please forgive my ignorance if this is a simple thing. The text reads: 2. In the old server's Information Store properties, change the location of the mailboxes' Public Folder server to be the new server. This will take care of any newly created public folders. (You'll have to stop and restart the Exchange services before this will take effect.) I see on the bottom of the properties page the home server is set to the old server. How do I change that? In the Instances tab there is a EventConfig_NewServer setting that is already on the left. I have searched the Q and found several articles relating re-homing public folders but I am not positive that is what I need to do and want this box to be pristine from day one. FYI I don't have any public folders as yet on the old or new server. Any advice will be appreciated TIA Jim List Charter and FAQ at: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/exchange_list_charter.htm
