Exchange 2010 backup.
Hi All, A big thank you to the forum! I transitioned my Exchange to 2010 from 2007 without any issues with the help of the forum. I am looking for a backup solution for my Exchange 2010. What are my options? I have 13 database. Right now I am using Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Windows Server Backup. I understand WSB cannot be used with tape drive. I have read a comment on some other forum by Mike that it may backup only the first database. In exchange 2007 I was using BackupExec 12. But the price for BackupExec 2010 is prohibitive. We have moved to Veeam for vmware installations (I guess HyperV is coming soon) , and for on-premise hardware setups we are using Arca/BDR units, which is just Shadow Protect with Ontracks Recovery piece tied into it for the most part. The largest client we manage is @ 1.2TB with 6 Exchange DB's , we moved from BEX 2010, to Veeam onto a Data Domain De-Dupe unit and haven't looked back. Can't you just use Windows 2008 server backup software? It will only do the whole database/store, but the price is right. Exchange has as plugin built in for this. Windows 2008 Server backup is a feature you need to install, but it's there. I have 2 small sites I look after like this, given both have non mission critical needs and are price sensitive, I have circular logging enabled [1] and manually perform a VSS snap every night and rsync the data offsite from the exposed snap. The servers remain up and operational 24/7 and I replicate only the delta from a reliable copy. Works well, MBS has example code on his site... jlc [1] If I ever figure out how to manually trigger a log flush, I'll stop the circular logging... Exchange 2010 backup/DR questions
Hi All, I manage an Exchange 2010 SP3 system: several CAS servers front-ended by a pair of load balancers, and a DAG hosted on several other servers. This is at our main site. We have other sites on the East Coast. Regarding backups, what sort of backups do you do? Currently I run DAG backups, but not full server backups (these are hosted on VMWare and I take snapshot backups of our other systems). I am concerned that DAG-only backups might be an issue if our main office failed and I needed to restore Exchange. I'd love to replicate our Exchange system to one of our remote offices, as we have sufficient reliable bandwidth, but the Director here does not see the point (Director knows nothing about Exchange or it's complexities, however) So are there any "best" or "recommended" methods to backup and restore Exchange? I guess that since I'd have to rebuild the servers, I would have to install Exchange in Recover Server mode? We are pretty much in the same boat. We have had very bad results with Tivoli and 2010 (YMMV; 2007 was fine), so we are looking to move to MS DPM for backup purposes. So far, the plan is to mirror a local copy of the DPM data to our DR site and hopefully that will meet the off-site backup requirement we have. The total amount of data is pretty irrelevant actually. It's more about how many passive copies you have, how large individual databases are, and where you have to store them. I have a graduate school as a client that has about 2 TB of data, spread out over a dozen databases with two passive copies. I back up the passive copies to DAS and then compress them to NAS. I keep 30 days and then delete. It works well for them. I've got many other clients using DPM and various Symantec solutions. Regards, Michael B. I can think of a couple of possible suggestions... First, could you not split the data up and NOT backup all that (largely static, unchanged?) data every time?... Implement exchange archiving, give all users an archive mailbox on a different server, and have an arching policy that moves items to the archive automatically after x months... Then backup the archives with a separate backup job, that can run concurrently with the main job, thus reducing the overall backup window required, and, you can backup the archives on a less frequent schedule... The main mailboxes will then shrink hugely, thus reducing your backup overhead there... Secondly, I'd think about maintaining an additional, LAGGED copy of the databases... The issue with going backupless and relying purely on replication for your data security is that a logical corruption will replicate to all your copies just like any other data would... (exchange won't replicate corrupted log files) but say a virus gets into an email and wreaks havoc amongst your databases... A lagged copy gives you time to detect and respond to any such problems before that copy of the data becomes similarly damaged... You can of course do both of the above... They're not mutually exclusive... You could, if you are concerned enough, (and wealthy enough!) have multiple lagged database replicas with different delays on them... Copies can be lagged up to a maximum of 14 days IIRC... So you could for example have a 24 hour lagged copy, and then say a 7 day lagged copy as well... You can have as many lagged copies as you like, subject to the DAG design rules of 16 databases maximum in the DAG. So Wbadmin start backup -vssfull -include:d:,c:\program files\microsoft\exchange server\v14\mailbox\ Depending on how you are calling wbadmin, that might take some fancy quoting to get right.
