non-dynamic mail distribution and mail problem

2009-01-26 Thread Whitson, Garry
In August my organization completed our migration from Exchange 2003
to Exchange 2007. Unfortunately we have been plagued by problems with
new, non-dynamic mail distribution and mail enabled security groups.
Mail sent to these groups via Outlook are not delivered and no non-
delivery notice is received by the sender.
If a user attempts to address a message to the group using OWA, there
is a prompt that there is more than one address (though OWA only shows
a single address).
None of the distribution groups have a legacyExchangeDN. I am aware
that RUS would have handled assigning this attribute were we still
running Exchange 2003 but this is no longer the case.
Obviously something is broken but we cannot determine what it is.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread Bob t. Berge

Hello admins and semi-pro's ;)

I have a question; does anyone know of a way, preferably without 3rd
party software (but if all else fails...), if it is at all possible to
block someone inside our domain from receiving mail from a certain
originating host/-email address/domain?
We're running Exchange2k and the solution should not be clientside but
serverside instead.
Adding a firewallrule is no option either.

Thanks in advance!

Routing Mail

2001-11-27 Thread Friese, Casey

I just installed Exchange 2000 into my server invironment which is all
native Win2k. This is the only mail server currently in the domain. My
domain name is test.com (example) Yesterday my T1 was installed and I had
an MX record created for testing purposes, the MX record is mail1.test.net.
I'm using test.net because everyone in the office is still receiving mail
via pop3 from an external provider. Anytime someone on the internet sends a
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] the message gets sent to our external provider
and we receive the message through pop3.

Now, since my domain name is test.com and I try to send a message from the
e2k server to test.com, the messages sits in the outbound queue and goes
nowhere. I don't have mailboxes created for my internal users as of yet but
I assumed that when I send a message from test.net to test.com that the
message would be routed through the internet to our pop3 provider.

Where in E2k can I tell messages that I send to test.com to go to our
external provider instead of try to deliver them on the inside?

Thanks
Casey

mail forward

Hi everybody. I'm in the final stages of seting up an Exchange2000 server

Mail Essentials

2001-12-18 Thread Tim Gilroy

Hi.

I tried to install Mail Essentials on a system that had Exchange 5.5 (SP4)
on it. I have done the backup routine etc. Installed Mail Essentials
changed ports and services file etc. I then had issues with intialisation
of object in the MMC. Due to the fact that this was a remote site and
time constraints etc I have reconfigured everything back to the way it was
and allseemed to be fine. But alas, it will download mail from the ISP
via smtp (Fine) but it will not upload files. It complains that it can
not resolve hosts. (Host unreachable) in the queues dialogue box. This
is a server that is forwarding all mail to the ISP mail gateway. I am
struggling abit for the quick fix and would appreciate thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

POP mail

2001-10-29 Thread Steve Ens

Greetings

I have just rolled out our Exchange 5.5 sp4 server on
Windows 2000 (member server).
Everything is running fine.
The two things I cannot find any info on are:

1)When retrieving mail remotely using POP mail, the users
can only use Outlook Express.  Outlook
does not work using the exact settings (including SPA).  Is there a setting on the Exchange
server I need to change?

2)When I get mail in to people who are no longer working
here (no mailbox), is there a way I can have a message sent back or
refused?  Some people sign up for so
many lists, etc and get so much spam that I want to
filter that out.

Thanks

Mail Relaying

applied the fixes mentioned in the article.

but for some reason we can still relay...

I ran the test on telnet relay-test.mail-abuse.org
And we pass all of the tests except for this one

:Relay test: #Test 17
 >>> mail from:
<<< 250 OK - mail from
>>> rcpt to:
<<< 250 OK - Recipient

type of addresses from being sent out from our boxes. Any suggestions would

Best you can do it slow it down or cut off some off it. But for Content

RE: Mail

2002-06-20 Thread Brian Politis

If you decide to download the demo of Mail Marshal, make sure to
download the updated Spam rules seperately. These get updated often and
aren't bundled into the install, because the are customizable, and the
install could theoretically overwrite someone's customized rules. The
standard rules with the install don't catch all that much.

I also have some separate info and reccomendations I can email you that
aren't posted publicly on MM's website yet, for configuring Spam
Filtration. At at site with about 250 users, I see about 60 - 120 spams
a day caught(most addressed to multiple personnel), and few complaints
from users on stuff getting through... Or block inappropiately.

This is without MAPS or RBL lists in use. If you really are trying to
kill spam, subscribing to a MAPS or RBL list will catch even more.

The customer's I have implemented it for, purchased it for other
reasons, but spam catching is a nice advantage.

I like the Gfi product line. Mail essentials works great on spam and
content filtering, has a few addons including web based responding,
which I don't know if the others have. When an email gets quarantined
for rule violation I can click on a link in the email to approve/deny it
so I don't have to radmin into the server. Stuff like that .. They have
a free trial as well .

system. I am looking for a solution where I can have one of the sytems
accept email for the domain, but if the mailbox is not located on the
system, then forward it to the other system.. Is that possible with
Exchange 2003?

Thanks,
Eric

RE: Exchange 2000 mail server + Linux mail server

2002-04-02 Thread William Lefkovics

Which server would the email hit first? What email app is running on Linux?
The native SMTP services? Or something like SendMail?
Is there not an alias file you can query and forward email to a specific
host upon failure?

Alternatively, Exchange2000 has a smart host option in an SMTP connector
that may assist.

Hi All,

I have problem with this situation. And need your advise.

Now, the company has decided get a Exchange 2000 mail server to locate at
Site B, and they prefer this exchange 2000 mail server serve Private users

So, what can i do to make this two server using the same domain (abc.com),
different email server, to serve different group??

Can some one help me?
Thank you

The smart host option will only work if it is the only Exchange server in your org,
problems start creeping in if there has to be mail between 2 exchange server and a
smart host, even if you check "send direct before using smart host".. this will not
however help you with which mail goes where.. I would personally adjust the names to
something like public.abc.com and office.abc.com, alterativly you could change
addresses to [EMAIL PROTECTED] being the company and [EMAIL PROTECTED] could be a cust.
recip that points back to the linux box

AW: Exchange 2000 mail server + Linux mail server

2002-04-02 Thread Rickenbacher Beat

If the Exchange2000 servers are first hit:
It shouldn't be a problem to forward all unresolved mails to another email
server. Just disable that the Organization is responsible for the whole
email address in the recipient policy (smtp).
There are also Qs available addressing these problems. (Sorry, I don't have
em handy right now!)

If the Exchange2000 servers are the end point:
Then it's standard procedure like they are the only servers in domain.

RE: Exchange 2000 mail server + Linux mail server

2002-04-02 Thread Marty Richards

If the mail flows to the linux server first, you can control delivery by
recipient using the virtual usertable in sendmail. Something like

[EMAIL PROTECTED] user@[my.exchange.servers.ip]

You would need to add a secondary email address to the exchange server users
- user@[my.exchange.servers.ip]

Any user not defined in the virtusertable file would be delivered locally to
the linux box as per current arrangements.

Cheers,
Marty

RE: Exchange 2000 mail server + Linux mail server

2002-04-02 Thread William Lefkovics

You control the routing on your messaging servers, not the other way around.
I can have 5 Exchange servers with one pointing to a SendMail smarthost.
What problmes have you experienced in this situation?

The subdomain is reasonable. The Linux box relaying unresolved recipients
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Each user would have to have both:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the former being the reply-to (Set as Primary) address.

Additional admin to that, but an alternative.

I have 2 (2000 sp2) and battled for 5 hours with this so any tips would be great!
Setup:
2 exchange servers in different routing groups (across a WAN link)
1 Linux box as a SOA DNS server, SMTP (sendmail) incoming (and outgoing), and Firewall.

What happened:
Setup SMTP to send via Smart host.. worked fine, however it insisted on sending mail
to the second server via the smart host as well... mail bounced from the linux box!

What I tried:
Setting (below the smarthost) to first try and send directly
created a seperate smtp vs and configured costing..
tried different setting in the routing groups connector

Eventually gave up and punched a hole in the firewall for smtp out and dns query the
linux dns on its internal nic

I typically use an SMTP connector for the smart host versus the virtual

The routing groups does add to the mix. Good resolution, though.

Hi All,

I have problem with this situation. And need your advise.

Site A is an old email server, previously it serve Public group users and
private group users.

Now, the company has decided get a Exchange 2000 mail server to locate at
Site B, and they prefer this exchange 2000 mail server serve Private users
ONLY. and let the old Linux server serve the Public group users.

So, what can i do to make this two server using the same domain (abc.com),
different email server, to serve different group??

Can some one help me?
Thank you

Tom

Subject: non-dynamic mail distribution and mail problem

Check to see if two objects have the same SMTP email address. I've seen two
issues lately.

1. Multiple Primary smtp addresses on the same object.
2. Multiple objects with the same SMTP address.

I believe it's the web management tool we use, but can't verify.

ok, let's say exchange 2000 is the first hit, ( mean change the DNS server
record, abc.com point to IP address 202.162.2.1)

I only create the users a,b,c,d,for Private users.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] / [EMAIL PROTECTED] / [EMAIL PROTECTED] / d@abc,com

if the somebody send the email to Exchange2000 server, - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
of course, the email server can't locate the user in Exchange 2000 user
list. ( means this is unresolved mails )

So, where should exchange 2000 forward the email to?? to Linux server?
is the linux server use the same domain?
of course the Private users point their SMTP and POP3 to the Exchange 2000
email server, BUT how about Public users? their POP3 server point to
Exchage 2000 or Linux?
If point to Exchange 2000 email server, user ([EMAIL PROTECTED] ) not found.!
If point to Linux mail server, then should the linux use the same domain
(abc.com )?

No.

if the mx record points to the linux box, then all abc.com mail will arrive
there.

The linux box then consults its virtual user table file. An entry in this
file might be:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]john@[202.162.2.1]

An email for john would then be redirected to the exchange server. If john's
account on the exchange server has a second email address of
john@[202.162.2.1] then it will be delivered. John's primary address on the
exchange server is still [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If a mail went to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and [EMAIL PROTECTED] was NOT in the virtual user
table, it would be delivered to user a on the linux server.

No secondary domains are required.

Cheers,
Marty

ok, i got what you mean. so, the problem solve

Outsider send email to John([EMAIL PROTECTED])
--
when outsider people send the email to john([EMAIL PROTECTED] ), the email will
arrive at Linux server, then according to the virtual user table, forward
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ( so in exchnage server i must create the user named
John ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ??)

John send email out

john point the SMTP server to Linux(abc.com ) will do..:)

John Receive email
---
So John, this public user ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - When he wants to receive email,
what is his POP3 server address?
IF point Linux (abc.com) the result will be user not found.
IF point to Exchange 2000 (202.162.2.1), then i think this is the right
one?

By the way,can u provide more info in this Linux server, virtual user
table, how to setup? how to configure? ( I think i am beginner in Linux )

Thank you very much

Close. Create John on the exchange server as usual ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), but add a
second email address for john@[202.162.2.1]. Leave the primary SMTP address
as [EMAIL PROTECTED]

>
> John send email out

Yes, you could do that, but its easier to leave John sending out through the
exchange server in the normal manner.

I thought John was an internal, not public user? The internal users would
probably use the Exchange server client, not POP/SMTP. You could set up the
internal users to use POP/SMTP via Exchange if you really want to.

The public users on the linux box wouldn't change from their current setup
(which could well be POP/SMTP to the linux box).

Hmm, you might want to get some help or do some web research for this.

The short version is to enable

FEATURE(`virtusertable', `hash /etc/mail/virtusertable')dnl

in the mc file, run m4 to convert the mc file into sendmail.cf, copy
sendmail.cf into the /etc or /etc/mail directory and restart sendmail. Then,
edit the /etc/mail/virtusertable file to contain the user redirection lines
discussed previously:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]john@[202.162.2.1]

and finally, compile the virtusertable file with

makemap hash virtusertable < virtusertable (do this in the /etc/mail
directory).

and thats it. Remember to re-run the makemap command above when you update
the virtusertable text file.

Cheers,
Marty

Perhaps for one user in Exchange 2K??

A good solution is Mails Essentials for such stuff.
Is not so expensive and a trial versiopn exists (90days)

Hello admins and semi-pro's ;)

I have a question; does anyone know of a way, preferably without 3rd party
software (but if all else fails...), if it is at all possible to block
someone inside our domain from receiving mail from a certain originating
host/-email address/domain? We're running Exchange2k and the solution should
not be clientside but serverside instead. Adding a firewallrule is no option
either.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about ex2k but I know in Ex5.5 there was a way to do this. In
the client mailbox config, there is a delivery restrictions tab. Simply
create a custom recipient for the mail address you want to block and place
this in the "reject messages from" table under list. I'm assuming here that
it is possible to do a similar thing in e2k. Microsoft wouldn't decrease
functionality in a new version, would they ;-)

It's probably pretty obvious to everybody else, but i'm stupid and i
seem to be losing my mind slowly the last couple of weeks; but what does
ADUC stand for?
And where do you see a tab delivery restrictions in exchange2k?

Thanks,

RE: Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread Neil Hobson

It's the Active Directory Users & Computers snap-in, and it's much
easier to type ADUC!

Make sure you run the ADUC from your Exchange 2000 server, or a Windows
2000 server with the admin tools and Exchange System Manager installed,
as the ADUC snap-in is upgraded. For each mailbox-enabled Windows 2000
user, you'll find a delivery restrictions button on the Exchange General
tab (I think).

Don't forget that with Exchange 2000, a lot of the admin is performed in
ADUC and not necessarily the Exchange System Manager.

Custom recipient? You've still got your Exchange 5.5 head on - it's now
referred to as a contact!

Looks like you're the semi-pro now... ;-)

Thanks for explaining the abbreviation, I just didn't think of AD Users

I did know about that tab being there in ADUC user's properties tho!

Sometimes it's so easy to focus on one thing and completely forget the

RE: Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread WEAVER, Simon

No probs Bob.
I am learning new stuff about Exchange 2000 all the time, and I have found
this list to have some uses, as well as various Exchange 2000 books, and the
online help files, plus Technet White papers, plus
www.microsoft.com/exchange

Phew! :)

RE: Blocking mail

2001-11-22 Thread Bob t. Berge

Well, that didn't work :(

I created this test contact with my hotmail address as e-mail.
I then added this contact to "Accept messages from everyone except:"
from my co-worker's account in ADUC. When I sent him an e-mail from that
hotmail account it still arrived in his mailbox!
When I added my testuser I noticed that I could only add users from
Entire Directory OR dv02.net (which is, ofcourse, our mailserver
domain), not a choice from any address book at all.

Did I do something wrong here? Am I forgetting something?

Backup mail server...

2001-11-26 Thread Steve Casas

I'm looking for a ISP/ASP that we can use to queue mail and as a backup mail
server/mail relay in the event our primary SMTP server goes down. Our
existing ISP, Qwest, does not provide this service. Can anyone recommend a
provider that can perform these functions?

Thanks,

Steve

RE: Routing Mail

2001-11-27 Thread Bob t. Berge

I think you should create an SMTP connector that forwards all mail to
the smarthost you provide (probably your ISP's SMTP server).
I could be wrong tho, but I don't think I am ;)

RE: Routing Mail

2001-11-27 Thread Barry McConnell

This would be bypass the problem but would work. Personally I
would create another MX record with a smaller value and point that to
your ISP for testing once testing is finalized and u create mailbox's
for your users and delete your ISP MX record.

Even better use the Blackberry Enterprise Server. Synchs inbox and calendar
wirelessly in both directions. When you send or respond or forward it is
addressed from your exchange address, not the Blackberry email address.

Hi everybody. I'm in the final stages of seting up an Exchange2000 server
and I'm kinda' stumped with something I hope is pretty basic.

We have 4 employees here that have e-mail pagers. I want all incoming e-mail
to be delivered to their exchange mailbox and be automatically forwarded to
their Blackberry account. I suspect that this is handled in the 'recipient
policies' but

Sounds like DNS not resolving.. Did the name change on the server? Is DNS updated to reflect that?
Do/Did you have LMHOST or HOSTS file?

Hi.

I tried to install Mail Essentials on a system that had Exchange 5.5 (SP4) on it.  I have done the backup routine etc.  Installed Mail Essentials changed ports and services file etc. I then had issues with intialisation of object in the MMC.  Due to the fact that this was a remote site and time constraints etc I have reconfigured everything back to the way it was and allseemed to be fine.  But alas, it will download mail from the ISP via smtp (Fine) but it will not upload files.  It complains that it can not resolve hosts.  (Host unreachable) in the queues dialogue box.  This is a server that is forwarding all mail to the ISP mail gateway.  I am struggling abit for the quick fix and would appreciate thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

On the outbound connectivity you should have mail forwarded to smart
host and that IP should be the mail essentials machine. Make sure the
MES machine is resolving correctly as well as is listening on port 25
from internal and external.

no outgoing mail

2002-01-09 Thread John John

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 machine that has suddenly stopped sending
outgoing mail. Outside mail is being routed internally, and internal mail is
routed fineit's just mail destined for outside.

The exchange box uses a different dns server than it did previously, but
this was done weeks ago. Messages stopped going out after a reboot
yesterday. I've tried switching back to the old dns server, to no avail.

The Exchange box is behind a proxy 2.0.

Any ideas would be helpful. I can't find anything on TechNet.

John.

Internet mail question

2002-01-16 Thread Charles Whitby

I currently have to active connections to the 'net: one through provider A
(whom we've had for some time but are phasing out) and one through provider
B (whom we're phasing in). Both have active connections tot he network
segment where the unprotected interface of my firewall lives.

E-mail comes and goes just fine through Provider A when I set its router as
the default gateway on my firewall.

When I set up provider B's router as my default gateway I can send e-mails
fine, but can't receive them.

I know that the required DNS changes showing my new addresses haven't
filtered through yet. My question is, when I'm using my new provider as my
default route to the 'net and some one sends an e-mail to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], shouldn't it still be able to come in via my old (and
still activeand connected) internet connection and be delivered to my
exchange server?

Configuration:

Exposed firewalla.b.c.180
/29 network
Old connection (A) a.b.c.179 /29
network
New connection (B) a.b.c.177 /29
network

I'm probably missing something totally obvious here, but hey, a chance to
learn is a chance to learn.

Thanks.

Routing E-Mail

2002-01-21 Thread Friese, Casey

All Exchange 2000 environment with latest updates applied, Native Windows 2k
domain with latest updates as well.

My domain name is penncolor.com so Exchange is installed as penncolor.com
Currently we use an external ISP to handle mail for our domain so our mx
record for penncolor.com points to our ISP.

When internal users with local exchange accounts send messages to internal
users without exchange accounts to the penncolor.com address, the messages
sit in the queue and eventually are bounced because they try to remain
internal.

Any idea how I can get this to stop until I get everyone cut over from the
ISP to Exchange locally?

Is
there a software package out there that does this or is it all custom web

Notification Inbound Mail

2001-10-02 Thread Sethi, Ali

Hello,

We have deleted approximately 100 mailboxes that belonged to former
employees. Our "administrator" mailbox usually received all Inbound mail
failures. Many of these email failures are due to users subscribing to
various email services like horoscopes, daily sports news, marketing news,
job news etc. Is there a way to block these emails from evening entering
our Exchange server? We get a ton of Inbound Failure messages everyday and
99percent of them are just useless listings that former employees had
subscribed to. What is the best way to prevent these Inbound Mail Failure
messages? Do you recommend putting all of these email address in Message
Filtering? Is there a better option?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
