I would think Postini could be configured this way.

Also, take a look at the Untangle products.

RE: Anti spam Appliance / Application with Multiple LDAP domain support

2009-11-23 Thread Simon Butler
ASSP is not suitable.
All of the questions about multiple server support suggest putting ASSP in
front of the gateway, not replacing it.

I am aware the requirements are a little odd - alas that goes with the
territory of being an Exchange MVP - you get asked the really odd stuff. I was
hoping to find something fairly cheap that would provide what we are missing
with the current solution. The current solution is about 60% of the way there,
it is finding the last 40% that is hard.

What I am going to do now is concentrate on dealing with the LDAP issue. If I
can find some way of pointing the current application at an LDAP server, but
the LDAP server is just a proxy to the multiple servers.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Simon.

With all those strict requirements I think you are looking at open source.

When we got a quote, CanIT was cheaper than 'cuda, but I can understand
not
wanting to deal with a sales guy. I will say that company is better to
deal

"Companies hiding pricing is a real pet peeve of mine. I have seen the
other side and know what goes on with variable pricing."

+1

Whenever I check out a product and there is no pricing available, I
almost automatically skip over it because I know the price is going to
be too high.

Occasionally I'll fill out the form, am always right that it is too
expensive, and then have to deal with sales calls for a product my
not-for-profit can't afford. Not worth the hassle.

RE: Anti spam Appliance / Application with Multiple LDAP domain support

2009-11-23 Thread Simon Butler
Yes, cost is an issue.
The current SMTP gateway is an Windows 2003 server running IIS. It has Vamsoft
ORF installed on it, but the biggest problem is emails to non-valid recipients.
If I can drop those then the bandwidth saved is considerable.

Therefore given that we are going from a solution that cost less than $1000 and
requires no maintenance, the cost of the replacement solution is very
sensitive.

The 'Cuda costs close to $7,000 (taking in to account the exchange rate) for
three years, making the cost per user very high. There are probably less than
200 email addresses in total. $35/user for three years compared to $5/user one
time charge is a hard sell.

A hosted solution is completely out of the question due to the business owner's
paranoia and to a lesser extent their business type.

Plus I want them to do an Exchange 2010 upgrade, I don't want to wipe out the
IT budget on buying an appliance!

CanIT Pro looks interesting, until I got to the pricing page. Fill in the form.
Companies hiding pricing is a real pet peeve of mine. I have seen the other
side and know what goes on with variable pricing.

Oh and I know I am sounding like a broken record with references to Vamsoft
ORF, but for the price ($239) I am getting spectacular results.

Thanks - I was just curious since I use the product myself. I will agree that
attempting to reach them by phone is difficult, and they are not overly
responsive on the forums - definite red flags. The couple of times I had
problems I initiated a support request using their web form and the problem was
fixed within an hour each time.

The support forums are just full of dissatisfied customers. Mainly about
problems contacting support.

Now I know that is mainly what happens in support forums but when you see the
same kind of complaints over and over again, it does tend to make you think
twice.

As I said in a response to another posting - if Vamsoft ORF supported multiple
domains, this question wouldn't have been asked. I have now seen it kill a spam
problem stone dead on multiple sites - as in straight cut off, users notice the
spam has gone etc, with no reported false positives.

Just wondering if you recall where you saw the unfavorable reviews for
SpamTitan?
I am running that as a VM here with about 200 mailboxes and over the last few
years I've had few problems and good results.
Two support incidents were fixed remotely by their tech support. I am running
a single machine (non-clustered) with only one domain and one mail server.

Hello,
Does anyone know of any anti spam application or appliance that has support for
multiple independent LDAP lookups at the domain level? I have a client that has
a single IP address, but three completely independent domains with their own
Exchange servers behind it. I need to replace the current SMTP gateway with
something that can do LDAP lookups for recipient validation.

Mail Foundry can do it, but their European support is rather weak.
Spam Titan can also do it, but the reviews aren't too great.

Anyone know of any others?

Thanks,
Simon.

Since cost is so big an issue (I thought 'cuda was at the low end!) maybe
you should check out CanIT Pro. You can get it as "software only" too and

could throw it on an old box if you have that little financial support.

RE: Anti spam Appliance / Application with Multiple LDAP domain support

2009-11-23 Thread Ralph Smith

Thanks - I was just curious since I use the product myself. I will
agree that attempting to reach them by phone is difficult, and they are
not overly responsive on the forums - definite red flags. The couple of
times I had problems I initiated a support request using their web form
and the problem was fixed within an hour each time.

The support forums are just full of dissatisfied customers. Mainly about
problems contacting support.

Now I know that is mainly what happens in support forums but when you
see the same kind of complaints over and over again, it does tend to
make you think twice.

As I said in a response to another posting - if Vamsoft ORF supported
multiple domains, this question wouldn't have been asked. I have now
seen it kill a spam problem stone dead on multiple sites - as in
straight cut off, users notice the spam has gone etc, with no reported
false positives.

Just wondering if you recall where you saw the unfavorable reviews for
SpamTitan?

I am running that as a VM here with about 200 mailboxes and over the
last few years I've had few problems and good results.

Two support incidents were fixed remotely by their tech support. I am
running a single machine (non-clustered) with only one domain and one
mail server.

Hello,

Does anyone know of any anti spam application or appliance that has
support for multiple independent LDAP lookups at the domain level? I
have a client that has a single IP address, but three completely
independent domains with their own Exchange servers behind it. I need to
replace the current SMTP gateway with something that can do LDAP lookups
for recipient validation.

Mail Foundry can do it, but their European support is rather weak.

Spam Titan can also do it, but the reviews aren't too great.

Anyone know of any others?

Thanks,

Simon.

RE: Anti spam Appliance / Application with Multiple LDAP domain support

2009-11-23 Thread Simon Butler
I am going by the specification on their own web page.
There is no check mark next to per domain settings.
Even the 300 is pushing it on a cost per user basis.

If I could get multiple IP addresses in this location I would just use three
separate machines and a copy of Vamsoft ORF, which is my usual anti spam
solution. However that doesn't support multiple LDAP, which is a pity as it is
cheap and has been highly effective for my clients.

Thanks,
Simon.

Hmmm. We have a 300 and the LDAP settings are configurable per domain.
Perhaps the 400's "per domain" features have to do with delegated
administration rather than recipient filtering? If the 300 is in the price
range it might be worth a call to Barracuda. We've also had our 300 for going
on 4 years, so maybe things have changed over time.

Barracuda is well out of the price range.
Each server is only supporting about 50 users, to get the per domain you need
the 400. The cost per user is too high.

I was pretty sure Brightmail could do it, but I don't buy anything from
Symantec. I operate a simple policy when it comes to Symantec products - if
they are installed and there is a problem, the problem is the Symantec product.
In most cases, the problem goes away when the Symantec product is removed.

Proofpoint - looks good as I could run it on a VM. However no pricing online,
that always makes me suspicious. Pricing based on what they think you can
afford.

Any other suggestions?

Simon.

Yes Cuda does because you setup the LDAP on a per domain basis. Which in
thinking about it I would bet any appliance that supports multiple domains will
do different LDAP servers.
