So I am getting an error back from a particular domain saying 4.4.0 DNS Query
failed when trying to send mail. Now I can fix this error at my end by
checking external DNS server in the send connector network settings (exchange
2010). However this particular domain is having problems with receing from
multiple senders. I spoke with their admin today and he is pulling out his
hair. Could it be that they are checking SPF records? He is running exchange
2007.

RE: DNS issue

2011-01-21 Thread Kennedy, Jim
Check the send connector and make sure it is set up to use the same DNS
settings as your NIC, otherwise your nslookup check would give you different
results. You can set the connector to use DNS other than what the server's NIC
is set to use. Perhaps someone did that..

Here's one that has me a bit baffled. Exchange 2007

We're cannot send email to one domain (lobassopackaging.com). Queue viewer is
showing them failing with 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed.

Nslookup (run on the Exchange server) resolves the mx record as
inbound.lobassopackaging.com.namesecuremail.net. That name resolves to
205.178.149.7 . I can telnet to port 25 on that server perfectly.

Ideas?

So if I'm reading this right... Their mail is not being received by www or
smtp.co.madison.oh.us because The MX record shows that they are using ATT for
mail forwarding. So if the message was Cannot find OUTBOUND MX Records, then
it's something on ATT's side rather than on Madison Co's side?

RE: DNS Issues

2011-01-21 Thread Campbell, Rob
Are you using mxlogic as an outbound mail relay?

If you are, is there any chance recipient's mail domain used to be a customer
of mxlogic?

If they used to be a customer of mxlogic, and then moved to ATT, then while
they were a customer of mxlogic, their MX records would have pointed to
mxlogic. The mail servers at mxlogic would have their own route tables for
forwarding the mail on to the Madison servers (they couldn't use MX, or it
would be a mail loop). If they didn't get all the entries cleared out of their
smtp route tables, I believe it would cause the symptoms you describe.

Here's one that has me a bit baffled. Exchange 2007

We're cannot send email to one domain (lobassopackaging.com). Queue viewer is
showing them failing with 451 4.4.0 DNS query failed.

Nslookup (run on the Exchange server) resolves the mx record as
inbound.lobassopackaging.com.namesecuremail.net. That name resolves to
205.178.149.7 . I can telnet to port 25 on that server perfectly.

Ideas?

Unfortunately, it appears that godaddy will only host DNS if you xfer
your domain registration to them... which I can't do as I recently
xferred it from elsewhere, and now can't move again for 90 days.

I can point to external DNS servers from my current registrar,

So... I need to tidy up my home Exch2K3 setup. Currently I'm
recv'ing/sending via an upstream smart host, but I'm about ready to
eliminate that.

Thus I need to need to get proper A, MX, and IN-ADDR records built. I
also need to figure out and build entries for SPF and/or domainkeys, as
they currently are rejecting mail from me.

My current registrar offers only A and MX records They kinda suck.
Any suggestions for an inexpensive DNS host provider that will allow the
additional records I need?

Thanks.

Fyi, it's likely that your ISP must host the PTR (believe you referred
to it as IN-ADDR) record - or assign it to someone.

2008-10-10 Thread Micheal Espinola Jr
Since you say home setup, I'm guessing you are on a residential
connection. I would recommend that you continue to smart host through
your ISP.

Even with proper DNS records, you could still find yourself subject to
a targeted residential blacklist. There are well-known popular DNSBLs
that are used for this (e.g. Spamhaus).

You would also need to look into removing anything residential
appearing about your PTR. This is another DNS object that is under
increasing scrutiny.

Are you having issues with your smart host configuration?

Thanks to all for the links.

I've found a problem in someone's dns servers so now either the
community college system or our isp, verison or someone will have to
figure it out.

We can't resolve some sites but when I point to one of the opendns.org
servers, it resolves.

Today it is www.nscc.edu which is Nashville State Community College.

Works fine from home but not here at the school.

I've got people up the chain working on it.

Last week it was www.liberty.edu

It is a dns issue as I can get there by IP.

Thanks

RE: DNS

Title: Message

This is a very very
simple question. Michael. Sorry it has been
mangled.

What you are asking is
how to create a child domain and allow another administrator to have control of
that child only with no control of the parent.

Two ways to create a
child:

1) As a sub domain
in the company.com zone. In that case you cannot separate control.

2) Delegate it to
another DNS server using a standard DNS zone delegation. This will
effectively point the child zone to the other server somewhere on the
planet. Whoever has control of thatserver has control of the child,
but not the parent zone.

A delegation only
contains the nameserver (NS) records of the server(s) it is pointing to. Since
any zone can have primary and secondary servers (or primary and multiple
secondary servers) (or techically multiple primary servers using the multiple
master model of AD integrated zones) you can/will have multipe NS records in the
delegation.

When you say you cannot see the properties, how are you trying to access
them? The reason I ask, is that the options on the context menu in the explorer
pane of the MMC can sometimes be different than those available in the main
window of the MMC. If you first select the secondary zone on the left side, then
right click it and you should then have properties. From there, you should have
a security tab, done.

I think you may have them confused with each

Strictly DNS then.

There
is no delegation wizard *in DNS* to do this, so you may first want to check the
delegation you did before and ensure that you didn't transfer the zone to
another server.

What
you want is the Security Tab. Right-click on the au.company.com zone in
DNS, and select "Properties". Go to the Security tab. Modify to your
heart's content.

Keep
in mind that the "delegation" you're thinking of and the "delegation" available
under DNS are two different things ;)

RE: DNS

2002-04-10 Thread Erik Sojka
Title: Message

Hmmm. You're right. I just created a new domain under my
existing zone and could not find a properties tab. The security settings
and permissions are applied per zone and apply to all domains in that
zone.

What
should work is creating another zone separate from the company.com zone.
(separating zones does not change anything about the relationship between the
zones nor does it affect the AD domain hierarchy).

Once
you create the au.company.com zone you should be able to set its permissions
appropriately.

Strictly DNS then.

There is no delegation wizard *in DNS* to do this, so you may first
want to check the delegation you did before and ensure that you didn't
transfer the zone to another server.

What you want is the Security Tab. Right-click on the
au.company.com zone in DNS, and select "Properties". Go to the
Security tab. Modify to your heart's content.

Keep in mind that the "delegation" you're thinking of and the
"delegation" available under DNS are two different things
;)

Are you talking about delegating permission to AD objects
(security/permission related and done through ADUC)?

Or are you talking about delegating a DNS zone to another server
(not security related and done via the DNS snapin)?

I think you may have them
confused with each other. Which tool did you use to delegate what
to whom?

tell it what Server hosts it.

  Hi,

  Is
this a problem? All the time I thought this is okay.
  My
setup is slightly different. We have our own domain
  with
two internal IMS servers, one cost 10 and another 20. What I
  observed
  is
abt 90% of incoming mails will go to the lower cost and 5%
  will
  go
to higher cost IMS server. By default the IMS only
  accept
  20
connections (something like that in IMC properties), so
  when
the max connections reach itshould go to the higher cost IMS
  server.

  Is
my assumption wrong? Then Heaven help me, I have been
  wrong
  for
  more than 2 yrs.

Hey guys Im not
a dns guru but Im thinking something is possibly wrong with the way this is
configured or maybe my understanding..

We have 2 mx
records 10 IN and 20 IN. The 20 is our ISP as a backup mail route. The
problem is although we have no downtime (monitoring with servers alive,
smtp, pop, ims service, and internet connectivity) we will find dozens of
messages sitting at the isp. Im running Exchange 2000 SP2 any ideas? we just
put sp2 on but I dont think that has anything to do with it..

Thx..

Their
are all kinds of reasons for that happening.. most of them are not DNS :
might be simpler if you do not have anything setup at the ISP to forward the
messages to just take that DNS entry out, and wait for the server that could not
get to you to resend

Oh BTW
just noticed the sender.. How it website coming?

isps use.. I thought it was a little more solid then well it may end up at one

If they don't have a real storefront, then it's a moot

Their are all kinds of reasons for that
happening.. most of them are not DNS : might be simpler if you do
not have anything setup at the ISP to forward the messages to just
take that DNS entry out, and wait for the server that could not get to
  you to resend

Oh BTW just noticed the sender.. How it

Hey guys
Im not a dns guru but Im thinking something is possibly wrong with
the way this is configured or maybe my
understanding..

We have
2 mx records 10 IN and 20 IN. The 20 is our ISP as a backup mail
route. The problem is although we have no downtime (monitoring with
servers alive, smtp, pop, ims service, and internet connectivity) we
will find dozens of messages sitting at the isp. Im running Exchange
2000 SP2 any ideas? we just put sp2 on but I dont think that has
anything to do with it..

Thx..

RE: dns server encountered invalid domain

2001-11-14 Thread Mal Sasalu

This means DNS server has received an invalid domain name. The domain name
might have contained invalid characters. Microsoft DNS only supports 0-9, a-z,
A-Z, - (hyphen), and the dot as part of a domain name.

What do you want the message to do? If the domain name can't be resolved,

I posted a question about this a while back and still have not been able
to resolve it.

If I were to send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (any domain
that does not exist), it will set in the queue and keep retrying until
it times out.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot it?

I am running Exchange 2000.

It
should get returned as "host not found", or in E2K's case, it sometimes comes
back as "the email system was unable to deliver the message but did not specify
a reason". If it sits in the queue, I would suspect it either resolves the
name and can't find the SMTP server or it can't get a DNS MX response?

I seem to
remember his post from before. Whenever I send an email and I send to a non-existent
address, I get an NDR. He is not. He was asking about custom configuration on
the (EX 5.5) IMS dont know what it is in E2K.

Wouldnt
an NSLOOKUP on the server determine if he has a DNS problem?

Stretching
