RE: Instant Messaging question
Anwar, The recommended config it to put your E2K server on the internal lan and a SMTP relay in the DMZ. Permit only port 25 from the internet to your relay and then only allow port 25 from your relay to your internal mail server. By putting your E2k server in the DMZ you're going to have to poke alot of holes in your firewall to make everything work properly. -Original Message- From: Anwar Qureshi [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, July 05, 2002 2:34 PM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Instant Messaging question Is moving the Ex srvr to LAN is the only option to make Instant Messenger work??? RE: Instant Messaging and SSL
Hmmm.. I've done this now, but I still cannot use IM. I've cleared the Require Secure Channel (SSL) check box from the default web site and enabled it for only the Exchange and Public virtual directories. I've also made sure that the check box is cleared from the InstMsg virtual site. Despite these measures, IM won't work (it still acts like the SSL requirement is in place). Interestingly, when I try to open the default web site on port 80, it too states that SSL security in required and that I need to change to https instead of http. Sure enough, when I change to https, the site opens. Obviously, I've not done something right, but I don't know what it is. Any ideas, anyone? RE: Instant Messaging Setup Problem
Hi Mark, I had exactly the same problems and didn't manage to find help any where. I did get a connection using user@servername but I couldn't get real e-mail addresses to work. Eventually, despite having IM running only on one server, I decided to try setting it up with a virual routing server and its now working perfectly. Here's what I did: - Setup a new IIS Web Site called im.domain.com o IP Address - All unassigned o Host header - im.domain.com - In Exchange System Manager o I added a virtual server (this will be the routing server) o Display name: IM Routing Server o DNS Name: im.domain.com o For IIS web site I selected: im.domain.com o Do not check host accounts o Then I added another virtual server (this will be the home server) o Display name: IM Home Server o DNS Name: servername (This is the server name and is the default option) o For IIS web site I selected: Default Web Site o Check allow server to host accounts - In the W2K DNS o I added the following A records: im.domain.com 207.236.x.x o New Service locator record: _rvp._tcp.domain.com SRV 0 0 80 im.domain.com I basically copied this from the server setup log just changing the names and ips to protect the innocent. ;o) Hopefully it'll give you an idea of how to set it up. On our DNS provider domain.com points to this box and now everything works well. Hope this helps... --- Luis Esteves Network Administrator Digital Connexxions Corp. Make sure your IM client's DNS settings are correct. Make sure the DNS server is reachable, etc. You might also do both an IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS and an IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS from the IM client (assuming this is a Win2K IM client). 2.Verify you are using the correct IM address. You can view the address in ADUC, from the Exchange Features tab. Note that if you are using a properly configured SRV record in DNS, you can also use your default SMTP address to log on. 3.Check IE Proxy settings on the client. In particular, make sure that (1) you are bypassing any proxy for local addresses; and (2) that you go into the Advanced proxy settings and enter your network's address ranges to the exclusion list. For example, if your IP address is 192.168.10.1, you should add 192.168.* to this exclusion list, or 192.168.10.* to the exclusion list. This is actually very important to do this. If you are using a proxy and you don't do this, you will never be able to log on.
