Steve,

The reason behind wantin a SLIP connection is that by setting D to 0
instead of 2, is that I can bring the server down and not hangup the
connection, saves a phone call or 2.

The hwclock command will allow you to set a correct date and time and
apply that to the hardware clock. You should be able to use something
like:

hwclock --set --date="9/13/99 08:00:00"
hwclock --hctosys

to get both the system and hardware clocks adjusted to the correct
value.

[expert] DHCP SMB

1999-09-13 Thread karl_rasmussen

Tried this on [Newbie] but got no response. I've checked the DHCP,
network, and SMB How-To's and several www sites also.

I've installed Mandrake Linux 6.0 on a notebook with a pc card network
adapter. The local network uses DHCP and I've configured this using
linuxconf. Basic network connect is working; I browsed the linuxmandrake
pages, downloaded the 2.2.9-27 kernel update, searched the archives for
this mail list, etc. Attempting to configure Samba, however, I get

" Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host myhost.my.work.domain" ( with real host and
domain name).

Sure enough, "ping myhost" and " ping myhost.my.work.domain" can not
determine myhost's ip address. Can't statically put it into /etc/hosts of
course, since DHCP will give me a different one on a later reboot.

Any advice or tips?

Thanks,

Karl Rasmussen

remember to copy /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot as

Unfortunately, when compiling, the new kernel doesn't

Try doing it from the console prompt instead of the KDE user editor.

1999-09-13 Thread Sridhar G

What I meant was to say Yes to second extended fs support.

Cheers

 Hi Aaron,

Did U happen to say Yes to "second extended fs support" under filesystem
menu, that may also be the problem.

 Cheers
 Sridhar

Subject: [expert] Kernel panic cant find hd

After compiling a new kernel (2.2.12 from kernel.org) on reboot I get
 an
error that the root file system can not be found. It looks like it can
not
find anything on my hd not just the root filesystem. When it is booting
it
lists all my ide devices and says something on the line with my hd about
getting the irq latter loads ppp a couple other things and then kernel
  panic can't find root filesystem.
I am running MDK 6.0 on a PII system with 1 IDE hd and one UW SCSI on
a
Adaptec 2940UW. I have made sure the root filesystem is listed in lilo,
turned off scsi support to see if that helped but it did not. I have
tried
turning off ide-2 in the config but that made no difference either. I
had
hi hopes for this kernel because I got no warnings during compile and i
usually do but I guess thats the way it goes.
  Any ideas
  Thanks,
