[expert] struct rusage

2000-02-28 Thread Mauro Tortonesi

I have already sent you a mail regarding this, but i think it has been
lost. I have tried to compile octave 2.0.16 and ssh 1.2.7 with mdk 7.0,
but the compiler produced an error message regarding struct rusage, which
doesn't seem to have a well-defined size. I wonder if anyone of you has
ever had any such problem, and if it's a problem with egcs or glibc.

Bill&Virginiasince TiMidity++-2.5.1-2mdk.i586.rpm is on your
Mandrake 6.1 distribution cd then why would you need to download
it? In fact, are you sure it wasn't installed when you did your
original installation? Also there is an associated package
called timidity-instruments-1.0-1mdk.noarch.rpm on your cd that
also should have been installed. It is needed for playing midi
files as well. Anyway, to get netscape to play midi files
embedded in a web page you need to install a plug-in like
plugger or ump in addition to timidity.

[expert] One more question and a thanx too

2000-02-28 Thread iTOOL

Thanx for everybody for the answers regarding the hosts.allow and hosts.deny
files... I got them rectified...

However, I have one more simple (?) question in regards to users privledges.
As per the instructions during installation I create a different or new user
other than root. However, I've been using root all this time for my
configuration and learning of this system. I've been told time and time
again that I shouldn't be using the root, so I went into linuxconf to change
the permissions of the one user I did create. I wanted to give that user
SuperUser access, the ability to run linuxconf, and view the system logs.
However, after setting these options, and loggin in as that user, I'm still
restricted. I cannot run linuxconf, nor can I peruse the /var/log
directory. I've gone back into linuxconf as root and the changes I made for
that user still exist as I set them, but none of them are in effect.

I even made the user of the root group to no avail... could somebody help
me out either by telling me what I'm missing, or at least direct me in the
correct direction for solving this little mystery?

thanx

I just installed Apache and OpenSSL on a RedHat 6.1 machine this weekend
and have done it with a Mandrake 6.1 and 7.0 systems. All you need to do
is install the Apache RPM, the mod_ssl RPM, and the OpenSSL RPM (or
RPM(s) as the case may be) and you should be up and running quite easily
with a few modifications to httpd.conf.

[expert] Monitor config Problems

2000-02-28 Thread Ivan Trail

Hello,

I have recently attained a MAG 570FD monitor to use with my laptop. I can't
seem to use the highest definition for the monitor. For instance, I can get
the 1280x1024 resolution to work on 8 bits-per-pixel (bpp) but it will only do
1024x768 with16bpp and even less with 24bpp. My question is, is this a
vodeochip problem? I only have 4M of video memory. More bpp means more memory
needed right? If you put pencil to paper you get 2,621,440 megabytes for the
1280x1024 resolution in 16bpp definition. Well within the 4M memory capacity.

Here are the stats:

Videochipset is Chips and Technologies 64.
4M video memory.

Monitior is a MAG 570FD
Man Resolution 1280x1024
Displaycolor unlimited
Pix Rate 103MHz nominal
Input signalVideo:analog, 0.7vp-p, 75 ohm
Sync: seperate TTL level
   composite TTL level
Scanning Frequency Horizontal: 30-70 KHz
Vertical:50-130Hz

When I setup X-config it tells me not to probe memory and not to set a
clockchip setting. Most of the data on the video chipset can be found in the
XF86Setup documentation.

Most of my computer experiance was from when EGA was absolutely amazing and
people were deciding whether to get an apple or a commadore, so if this is
totally stupid please tellme so and I will rejoin the beginner's list ;^)

You shouldnt have to set it to get netscape to work. Im running 4.7
(and have run numerous other versions) and never had to use the
variable. However, you can set it (in your shell initialization script,
for example) to point to the java40.jar located somewhere beneath the
netscape lib directory (/usr/lib/netscape/java/classes/ on my machine).

Good luck,

When you run the installation program, answer "yes" when it asks you to
search for a scsi card. It'll detect it and ask you if you'd like a boot
disk created. Keep in mind that after the install, you'll always need
this boot disk to boot up to linux. Or you can patch the kernel with the
udma66 patch after the installation.

I had this with a Celeron 333 and AMD 400 on 6.1. I took out all the
timeouts in the script except for the one after I start ppp on the
server side. Then I have a timeout of 60 seconds waiting for the

Yes, you have to restart or hangup inetd. Like this:

prompt # killall -HUP inetd

That makes inetd reread its configuration files, including
hosts.allow and hosts.deny.

One thing you need to watch for, is that not all daemons
use inetd. Look in /etc/inetd.conf and you will see what
runs what. If you see something like

 /etc/bin/inetd in.telnetd

then you know that telnet is running under inet. The way this
works is that when the request comes in for a telnet login,
what is started is NOT telnet, but inetd. Inetd then checks
its configuration files to see if the connection is allowed
for that port (hosts.deny hosts.allow), and if so, then it
spawns in.telnetd and hands things over to it.

Another gotcha is "in.telnetd". This is probably a link
or a startup file for the telnet program. In some cases,
due to modifications to the Linux system, the link is dead
and some other program actually listens on the port and
responds and inetd is ignored. It is best to check and
double check these things. Here on my servers I use
qmail and ncftpd, neither of which runs under inetd although
the ports are listed there as well (commented out in my case).

Play with things and verify them. What works well to do
this is to get a friend to give you a telnet account somewhere
and you can probe, poke and telnet into YOUR computer from
HIS.

[expert] 2.3 version kernel & netfilter

2000-02-28 Thread David M.Kufta

Hello List,
I have been attempting to get a firewall setup using hackkernel-2.3.41-1mdk
and have not been able to figure out netfilter to setup my firewalling. Has
anyone setup firewalling with this kernel version ? I have read what
documentation I can find on netfilter and supposedly there is some sort of
backward compatability with ipchains, I would appreciate any direction or
advise that anyone could offer. I currently am running a ampernet/internet
gateway system an have a V90 56K ppp connection to my ISP I then use ipip
encapsulation to forward ax25 (Amateur Radio) packets through tunl0 device and
onto another Amateur Radio Gateway. I would much prefer to use ax25utils and
the linux kernel to do this rathere than my current configuration which
utilizes a NOS package to allow RF Port traffic from 3 serial ports to be
routed via a pseudo slip port, sl0, to my Linux box and then to the internet.
This is very confusing to explain. I found a script to convert ipfwadm2ipchains
when I went to the 2.2 series kernel and was hoping for something similar to go
from ipchains to netfilter. Once again all help.direction would be very much
appreciated.

Thank you,
Dave

Ahh...sounds like a DNS lookup problem. In your /etc/hosts
(??) file or /etc/hosts.allow do you have the name AND IP
address of all other local machines that you want to telnet
from included?
This is somewhat of a FAQ, I think. I seem to recall
reading this problem a LOT in the past. I'd suggest going
to the web site (www.linux-mandrake.com) and from there,
find the link to the archives and search on this one. I
think that if it DOES eventually work, that the problem is
that the Linux box is trying to do a reverse DNS on the
machines for authentication purposes and is timing out.

Everything Ethernet seems fine (other connections work great). My telnet

If I send
multiple carriage returns during the hang the Linux box will eventually
prompt for a login (after discarding the multiple incorrect login attempts

will
timeout and close. If I use the default Linux telnet client of the

no
problem.
A LAN analyzer shows the acks and connection as being inplace immediately.
The carriage returns are sent to the proper address and agreed upon

During install I included something called a "telnet server". I assumed
it
was needed to allow telnet connects. I also have apache, sendmail,

Once I get a login prompt everything is fine and speedy.
I am lost at this point, but am suspicious of shadow passwords and security

I also installed telnet client from the cdrom. , that corrected
my problem.

I'm running the SB AWE 32 PnP card. I could E-mail you my isapnp.conf file
and my kernel config file.

Re: [expert] Kernel configuration to support audio (mic and speaker)

2000-02-28 Thread M Thompson

Are your sound problems limited to Netscape? Are you able to play and
ordinary wav file? Are you able to play a midi file? If you answer no to
the previous two questions, I suggest running "sndconfig" from a console.

Re: [expert] cdrecord problem with Mdk 7.0

2000-02-28 Thread M Thompson

Alex,

You sound knowledgeable about CD burning...maybe you could lend some advice.

I recently got a CD-RW drive, but I haven't yet burned a CD in Linux.

Does the command "mkisofs -J -r | cdrecord -v fs=8m ..." make an ISO
filesystem on the CD-R and then burn the contents of onto the newly
formatted CD?

What is the best way to make an "exact" copy of a CD in Linux (including the
CD boot sector, etc.)? I only have one CD drive (my CD-RW drive), and I'm
trying to avoid the graphical frontends for now.

Thanks,
Matt

[expert] SSL

2000-02-28 Thread Michael D. Kirkpatrick

I am trying to add SSL to my copy of Apache. I downloaded modssl and all the
requirements noted in the docs. I have followed the DOCS to a 'T' and I have
compile errors. Naturally it is not a path problem. I am using the latest
versions of everything during this install. Can someone possibly help me out by
pointing me in the right direction to where I can find better docs or something so
I can get this installed?

Does anyone know of a simple install method or something? Some help would be
greatly appreciated.

I started out with RedHat 6.0 release and updated the Kernel and associated files.
All that took ok. Unfortunately, RedHat 6.0 does not come with an option to
install SSL in the packages list. If it did, I would not be having these problems.

Thanks in advance.

[expert] Problems with telnet

2000-02-28 Thread james.fogg

This is my third install with Mandrake 6.1 (helios). In each install I have
noticed problems telneting into the box from an Ethernet connection.
Everything Ethernet seems fine (other connections work great). My telnet
clients (teraterm and Windows telnet) hang for up to a minute. If I send
multiple carriage returns during the hang the Linux box will eventually
prompt for a login (after discarding the multiple incorrect login attempts
from the carriage returns). If I don't send carriage returns the client will
timeout and close. If I use the default Linux telnet client of the
troublesome machine and telnet to the ip address of the box I have no
problem.

A LAN analyzer shows the acks and connection as being inplace immediately.
The carriage returns are sent to the proper address and agreed upon port
number. The Linux box offers no response to the carriage returns.

During install I included something called a "telnet server". I assumed it
was needed to allow telnet connects. I also have apache, sendmail, ftp and
samba installed. I have no Xwindows support installed (other than a few
pieces that helios included anyways). I was asked if I wanted to use shadow
passwords and I said yes.

Once I get a login prompt everything is fine and speedy.

I am lost at this point, but am suspicious of shadow passwords and security
possibly hanging the session. Any ideas?

The Outlook clients, and the Interdev Clients work for a few minutes, then
report constant time outs, or 'Network Unavailable' type errors - (however
other utils such as Internet explorer carry on working fine). Outlook
starts working again after a few retries, and Interdev must be closed and
reopened before it works again.

It seems like ports are being held open, or not closed properly or
something like that - although thats just a random uneducated guess.

2000-02-28 Thread John Aldrich

I've got a refurbished Yamaha CDRW 4x4x16 at home that
makes beautiful CDs most of the time. 'Course I don't use
MKISOFS, as what I'm burning is already in an ISO format
(so far.) I've made numerous CDs of three different
distributions of Linux, and with 4 exceptions all have
verified OK on my system. One exception was due to my error
in setting up the options in XCDRoast, and the rest appear
to be media errors as best I can tell.
I'm using Mandrake 6.0 with an Advansys Ultra SCSI (PCI)
controller.
Are you folks that are having problems using ATAPI CDR/RW
drives? I know they're SUPPOSED to work

[expert] cdrecord problem with Mdk 7.0

2000-02-28 Thread Alex ZIJDENBOS

I upgraded from Mdk 6.1 to 7.0 this weekend, and ran into a rather odd
problem with cdrecord. I have a script that burns data CDs by piping
stdout of mkisofs straight into cdrecord, like

   mkisofs -J -r | cdrecord -v fs=8m ...

However, with the Mdk7 rpm for cdrecord, this produces a corrupt CD!
It works fine if you create an image explicitly, but using a pipe like
this results in binary corruption of the individual files. The
file/dir structure looks OK though.

I uninstalled the Mdk7 rpm and installed the latest cdrecord tarball
(cdrecord-1.8.1a01.tar.gz), and now things work fine again.

Has anybody else seen this?

A google search for "nat linux" is quite intresting.

Sorry, folks, that I bothered you with a prob which is none.

After sending the previous mail I dozed off and dreamed. Suddenly a
giant Tux stood in front of me and screamed "RTFM!".
I awoke trembling in shock and terror. First I changed my underwear and
then I read the FM of mkisofs. I discovered the options -C and -M and
now I live happily ever after.

[expert] Kppp Script Times Out on Athlon/MDK 7.0 System

2000-02-28 Thread Tom Snell

Getting odd behavior with Kppp on new homebuilt Athlon 650MHz/MicroStar
K7 Pro mobo system under MDK 7.0 that was not an issue on my other
Celeron 466/Abit BM6 box.

When setting up Kppp as usual, and attempting first connection (this is
after properly configuring the USR 28.8 ISA PnP modem with 'setserial',
isapnptools, etc.), the modem initializes OK, then Kppp begins dialing,
then immediately locks with the error message: "Script timed out.". Any
subsequent attempt to dial into ISP with Kppp results in Kppp getting
caught in a vicious circle of "modem initializing, dialing, 'script
timed out', then going through the same sequence until stopping it with
'cancel'. All 'timeout' settings are same as with my other boxen, even
increased all of them with same result.

What script is timing out here, and is this an issue with Athlon boxes
only? Able to make connection with minicom or Kwvdial with no problem,
so I suspect it's a Kppp issue.

Any help is appreciated.
