Update: [expert] Errors: Install using pcmcia ethernet card fails to load module

2000-03-10 Thread salkin

Well, I decided to see if I could get ahead of the game in case some white
knight sent me a working 8390.o. Here's what I found.

The pcmcia disk has a file called pcmcia.rdz. This file is a gzipped ext2
filesystem. I copied it off, unzipped it, and mounted it via loopback. On this
filesystem there's a file modules.cgz. This is a gzipped cpio archive. In it,
among other things, is 8390.o!

So, when I get all the aforementioned errors resulting from not finding
/tmp/pcmcia/modules/net/8390.o, it's not because that file got dropped
somewhere, but somehow the boot floppy is not mounting these things where the
install script can find them.

Any additional insights very welcome. I'd really like to try mdk7 but if I can
make rh61 work and not this, I can't carry on too much longer. Eventually I
need to get some useful work done.

Thanks in advance,

Steve Salkin

You should first try a value at the LILO prompt (after hitting teh tab key

[expert] Errors: Install using pcmcia ethernet card fails to load module

2000-03-10 Thread salkin

Hi:

I am trying to install mandrake 7 on an IBM ThinkPad 240 without a CDROM
drive. I have a Mandrake 7 CD which I intend to mount at /home/ftp/pub on this
Redhat 6.1 box I have nearby, and use a crossover cable to connect them. The
Mandrake boot disk is having trouble loading a driver for the ethernet pcmcia
card though.

The following messages appear on the console prefixed with:
(30)Mar 9 cardmgr[17]:

intitializing socket 0
socket 0: EP-210 Ethernet
executing 'insmod /tmp/pcmcia/modules/net/8390.o'
+ Cannot find archive member /tmp/pcmcia/modules/net/8390.o: file does not
exist in archive
insmod exited with status 1
executing: 'insmod /tmp/pcmcia/modules/pcnet_cs.o'
+ /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_open
+ /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol enthdev_init
+ /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt
+ /tmp/pcnet_cs.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init
insmod exited with status 0
get dev info from on socket 0 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable

What's really strange to me about this is that I can get this part to work
with a redhat 6.0 CD. After loading a bunch of stuff across the connection, it
does eventually die with some message about being unable to set the server in
passive mode. But that's not the point, the point is that it can find the card
and use it to download things.

If anyone can tell me what to do about this, I'll do it. For example, I think
I could take a working 8390.o and put it on the pcmcia floppy using this
redhat box, and then maybe this would work. I'm sure I could make room by
removing some unneeded pcmcia stuff if necessary.

Thank in advance,

Steve Salkin

Well, Postilion tries to be like NeXT's old mail program, so it's got
gigantic icons and layers of folders to store messages (which works great
with procmail).  One thing I've gotten very used to over the years
of working with GUIs is the ability to have lots of windows open with
folders or messages, which allows me to keep track of a lot of mail,
unlike with CLI-based mailers that make me remember what I'm doing.
:-)

Overall, Postilion is very feature-complete (it's on v0.9.3), no major
bugs, and can view inline images and crappy HTML (based on tkHTML's
widget).  I'm really not looking to change, and I went through a
bunch of email programs when I converted to Linux, so I guess that says
something. :-)

[expert] cdrom duplicate help wanted

2000-03-10 Thread Bug Hunter

I've got the cdrom writer working. I'm using xcdroast ok. I was able
to create a cd using linux, no problem.

I'm looking to create an iso file from a redhat 5.2 cd, not the
commercial version, but a fully free one that happens to be bootable. I
have a specific need for that, as this product is going into an embedded
system for internal use, and we need to be able to rebuild it. There are
some drivers I've written for the 2.0.x kernel to drive custom hardware.

I've looked at excite and mamma, and the cd writing howto and the man
pages for cdrecord and the docs for xcdroast. I have found nothing for
linux that does what I want.

I want to duplicate this redhat 5.2 cd, including the bootable part.
the brand new adaptec cd creator version 4.01 that came with the drive no
longer duplicates a cd. It just copies the files, and so the new cd does
not boot.

Does anyone have something or a procedure under Linux that will give me
an exact iso image from the cd so the new cd burned from it is an exact
duplicate?

I'm thinking dd might work, but I've already got one coaster and don't
drink that much. :)

I have seen other lists that do exactly this, although without the HOWTO.
A simple reminder to search the list archive prior to posting and a pointer
to the archive can be a worthwhile increase in bandwith use and it only
takes a line or two.

My only complaint here is that many archives have rather clumsy search
capability and some have none, other than browsing. It needs to be easy
before people will use it.

Simple enough. Why can't it be the system default behavior for Mandrake?
Those that can make use of core dumps certainly know how to enable them. It
would eliminate one of those "newbie" aggravations with those "mysterious"

[expert] SSH-TIP

2000-03-10 Thread Lee

 ssh tip

From: Frido Ferdinand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Just discovered a neat trick to using ssh-key authentication in a nice
way, this will let you connect to remote hosts without typing in your
password all the time. It's also very
convienient to make (perl) scripts connect to remote hosts without using
scary .rhosts/rsh combinations.

To use this just do the following:

1 Install ssh
---
You can get the source from: ftp://ftp.cs.hut.fi/pub/ssh/
or RPMS from: ftp://ftp.replay.com/pub/crypto/linux/redhat/i386/

2 Run ssh-keygen

ssh-keygen - authentication key pair generation
Run it and use a good long passPHRASE. (phrase not word)

3 Edit .xinitrc
---
Put in your .xinitrc ssh-agent in front of the command

for example

# Window Maker default X session startup script

PATH="$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin"

exec /usr/local/bin/ssh-agent wmaker
exec /usr/local/bin/xscreensaver -no-splash &

I think that if you use xdm you should edit your .xsession file.
Now every time you start up ssh-agent, the program that will manage your

ssh-keys, will start up in the background.

4 Run ssh-add
-
When you're in X just type in your favourite terminal,

ssh-add

It'll ask you for the passphrase of your key, type it in and your
private key will be loaded in memory.

5 Authorize the remote host
---
Now on the host to which you want to connect, do the following:

copy the contents of the generated public key (.ssh/identity.pub)
to the "authorized_keys" file on the remote host. Be sure to set
the permissions of this file to 600.

Now connect to your remote host with: ssh remote-host. If everything
goes well you won't need to type in your password but still have
a good secure authentication scheme.

6 Examples
--

Run command 'ls' on remote host:

ssh remote-host ls

The ssh-agent uses two environment variables:

set | grep SSH gives

SSH_AGENT_PID=10953
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/ssh-frido/ssh-10952-agent

In your perl script put:

$ENV{"SSH_AGENT_PID"} = 10953;
$ENV{"SSH_AUTH_SOCK"} = "/tmp/ssh-frido/ssh-10952-agent";

And you can do:

$output=`ssh -q remote-host ls`
print $output

I normally use this to call other scripts. This way you can have one
script
which accesses multiple servers !

Hi everybody,

I want to contribute with a small but very useful tip. I'm not a

this worked. Put it in .bashrc or in a .login script.

Here's what Axalon told me. I had it pretty close... Just
don't need the "B" in 256MB. :-)
So, the CORRECT syntax (as I gather from Axalon's
correction) is:
append='mem=256M'
In other words, I think you need to include the phrase
"append="

Camillethanks, glad to know that you're there and thanks for
the file, but on my system this file is already installed in the
man pages.

What we were talking about was the only available docs for
supermount were the man page and the --help switch and that
there were no additional docs or how-to's. Axalon jumped in and
commented 'Could have fooled me have you looked on disk #3' and
I stated that probably nobody discussing this had a powerpack in
which to look for the docs on disc 3. At this popint we still
don't.

Thanks again,

Re: [expert] partitioning

2000-03-10 Thread ibi

I have used Partition Magic for several years with good results. Version
5.0 is by far the easiest to use. Actually I used it to resize and
repartition my drive so I could add Ext2. Resizing on the fly is not
difficult once you understand how it works which is to begin by
resizing a partition with empty space in it. A full partition that is
resized will loose data. For my way of thinking, PM isn't much different
than FDisk except I can make changes at a later date without
reformatting the entire drive. What I like best about PM is the ability
to hide a harddrive. Once hidden it doesn't spin.

Yes wrong patch, applying them will attempt to downgrade your
kernel. Maybe your looking for the 2.2.15 pre patchs. but anyway..

you should use -p1 not -p0

what I did in /usr/src is:

Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?

Well, as long as I can get information, I'll keep reading it. I have NO
problem with reading about modems/brands/good/bad/yes/no etc. I've
learned a lot reading them. If it's something you don't want to read,
then don't read it. Just pick from topics that sound good to you. And
it does apply to Mandrake. Maybe I've read it before in the list, but
that doesn't mean that someone new has. Yes, look in the archives. But
how would they even know such a discussion even existed?

Keep the flow of information. Even about what modems work or not and
why.

2000-03-10 Thread Grojer Juergen

ned to run linux and two times nt on one pc you can't spare enough mamory.
Is there any other WM available wich also uses less memory?

I think he's associated the abbreviation for the window manager.

Juergen, FVWM2 is a window manager that controls your display in a
particular
style.

VMware is entirely different; it's software that lets you install Windows
and
run it =as=a=window=in=Linux=. In other words, Linux as the base OS and
Windows in a Linux window so you can run those pesky Windows apps in Linux!
Works good, but a bit slow.

Be advised, FVWM & -2 are rather old and very few people run them, so you
will
have trouble with support. Recommend KDE. (Gnome still too buggy)

[expert] problem starting notes-server with new kernel

2000-03-10 Thread Harald Wolf

Hi,

i had to create a new kernel 2.2.14 to get my 37GB IDE-HD to work.

i have installed Lotus/Domino-Server 5.0.2.c which is working with the
original kernel
from the PowerLinux 6.5 CD fine.

my new kernel (2.2.15) works fine to ... no problems !

except the Domino-Server. if i try to start the server
("/opt/lotus/bin/server") nothing happens
no error-message no /var/log/messages-message quite NOTHING

how to analyse a Problem if i have no errormessages

Sorry Axalon, whilst I'm not a complete newbie, I've still a lot to learn about
Linux - how do you reboot with kernel-linus as the kernel?

Not yet a plea for help - merely a comment on where I'm at - I want to look at a
few more things yet before I cry "too hard", but if anyone knows where I can find
a README or HOWTO for the CMI8330 chip, I would appreciate it. The sndconfig
utility is unable to determine the proper settings at all, and the ones that
worked under Ver 6 generate an irq clash with my ver 7 install..

Re: [expert] network question

2000-03-10 Thread huth

i think with netconf or linuxconf you can also name your host and your
domainname. if not maybe you can set it in /etc/sysconfig/network and/or
/etc/Hostname /etc/Domainname.

[expert] No CD music, but soundcard OK

2000-03-10 Thread David Warnock

Hi,

I have installed Mandrake 7.0, my soundcard (soundblaster Live) works OK
(I can play wav files fine), the cd player works fine (it detects the CD
and play starts counting time). But no sound comes out when I play a
cd. I guess that the cd player does not "know" about the soundcard.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Dave

[expert] RAM above 64mb not found

2000-03-10 Thread David Warnock

Hi,

As per the subject I have a Panrix machine with an AMD Athalon
processor, it has 256mb RAM (and this is checked and counted OK by the
bios at boot time). The kernel (2.2.14 - standard from Mandrake 7.0) is
only finding 64mb).

The installer showed 65mb, I tried entering 256 but it was ignored so
far as I can see.

I have tried adding append "mem=256" to my lilo.conf, but this causes
the kernel to hang on bootup.

I have made sure the bios is not shadowing any areas of RAM.

Anyone got any bright ideas about how to rescue my RAM? I am happy to
use a custom kernel but so far I have not found an option that makes any
difference.

Thanks

Dave
