find your distribution. go to the Mandrake/RPMS subdirectory. enter this
command:

rpm -Uvh rpmdrake*

they may be unsatisfied dependencies. make a list of them. then enter

rpm -Uvh rpmdrake* missing1* missing2* ...

you can either list them all together in one command, or enter

rpm -Uvh --nodeps rpmdrake*
rpm -Uvh --nodeps missing1*
...
and so on. --nodeps ignores the dependencies. if something still refuses to
install use:

rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force rpmdrake*
rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force missing1*
...

what's happened is that all the rpm's that were required by DrakConf were not
installed. this has happened to me as well before.

once you have rpmdrake installed, it will check dependencies for you
automatically and will install everything it needs at once without your having
to screw around.

good luck!

 Hi Gang,

I just installed the latest 7.1 on a system. A couple things went wrong:

#1. After it installs all the packages from disk #1, it prompts me for
disk #2. However, my CDROM drive is frozen - I can't eject it! Even when I
physically unplug it, switch disks, and plug it back in again, LM doesn't
see the disk. What's up with that? Tried another CDROM drive, thinking
there was something wrong with the one, but same story.

#2. I noticed the PICO editor didn't get installed. Where can I get that?

#3. I want to have a http server running on this machine. I didn't see
any server software get installed. Didn't see any Apache stuff in the list
of RPMs on the disk either.

 Thanks.

Re: [expert] LT winmodem with MDK 7.1?

2000-06-24 Thread Tom Massey

Hi Norvell - I'm sending a cc of this to the Mandrake Expert list,
because there's probably somebody there who can comment on this better
than I can.

Norvell Spearman wrote (with regards to the idea of using the 2.2.14
ppp.o module with the 2.2.16 kernel):

Could the above solution possibly work for a tape drive problem I'm
having? My tape drive isn't working with Mandrake 7.1 where it works
perfectly with 7.0. I'm including my previous posting to expert. I've
already tried changing the block size with an mt command (before running
tar), but with no success. Upgrading the kernel to 2.2.16-4mdk didn't
 help either.

It'd be worth a try I think.

And instead of recompiling 2.2.14, could I not simply find ide-tape.o in
the kernel-2.2.14 rpm and use it?

Possibly - I'm just not sure if the .o file would be included in the
RPM. I think it probably would be so long as you don't mean the source
RPM - the source RPM just has code that you need to compile before you
use it. If you can find ide-tape.o from a 2.2.14 RPM then it'd probably
work.

You'd still need to change the kernel version in ide-tape.o to make it
work without error messages - this is not hard to do, you just have to
load the module into a text editor (eg Emacs) and change the 2.2.14 to
2.2.16 or whatever kernel you're using. You'd have to check which kernel
it is exactly if you're using a Mandrake modified one - typing 'cat
/proc/version' in a terminal will give this to you. Then you put the
module you've modified in place of the one that's already there -
somewhere in /lib/modules/2.2.16/ probably - (good idea to make a backup
called ide-tape.o.old or whatever) and then 'insmod ide-tape'. You may
have to 'rmmod ide-tape' first to unload the old module.

Please remember though that dropping back to an earlier module isn't
really a solution, and this technique probably won't work with kernel
2.4. Please feel free to email me if you have any problems following
these instructions. Hope this helps.

[expert] su - user -c command doesn't load profile

2000-06-24 Thread Jasper Spit

Hi,

On Mandrake 7.0 when you do a su - user -c "command" from the root
account,
user's profile is not loaded. When you just do a su - user, it works OK.

This is very annoying, I need to create a script that runs as root and
executes some
commands as another user. I can't get this to work right now.
Even su - user -c ". .profile; echo $ORACLE_HOME" doesn't work.

How can I get this fixed ? I can't remember having this problem on Red Hat
or SuSE.
I upgraded to the newest sh-utils, but that didn't help either.

Also, su doesn't return the correct errorcode if you use the -c flag, it
always returns 0.
This works fine on e.g. HP/UX and Sun Solaris.

Thanks for the help,

Jasper

[expert] postfix or sendmail tempting

2000-06-24 Thread ago

Hi all!

I've got the job to make accepting mails to an e-mail
address a bit unusual. What's unusual. I will explain. When
a mail arrives to the address it shouldn't appear in the
/var/spool/mail immediately. Because there is daemon which
scans the mailbox all the time and as soon as it sees a mail
arriving it takes it from the box and passes it to a program
which works on it and then sends the output to a database. But
when the mail starts to arrive the system starts to write
it to the disk immediately. ..And the daemon takes of , let's
say the first 15 bytes (From, mal client etc.) but not
whole letter. That's the problem because the body contains the
datas to the program. The only solution I see is to move it
temporarly to a /temp box or directory and as soon as the whole
mail arrived pass it to the accurate mailbox so the daemon could
catch it to delivery(the whole mail) to the program. Oh, yes,
and all the headers have to be untouched so the From and
Reply to and Envelope _must_ be the same as they arrived.
The ASCII art to this (as I imagine) :

mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- temporary box/dir(until closed) --
-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] /-- daemon -- program -- DB2/

How can I do it with postfix (preferable) or sendmail or any other
sendmail compatible MTA
RTFMs and HOWTOs are welcomed.

Wonder if this is connected somehow to why I can't get a live
stream from Live365.com? It apparently uses 'm3u' and 'pls'
extensions on the live stuff. 'pls' was already in my xmms setup
and I added in netscape the extensions to realplayer and it tries
to open it but won't play anything but the realplayer 'theme'
...just can't get it to connect to the live365 stream.

I have a direct link address for a weekly radio program that
is live streaming on mp3 format (different site entirely)
and go direct through xmms with no problem. And can
get live radio broadcasts fine (that are not in the new
media player format)...i.e. from Yahoo Broadcast.

I am at a loss for how to do this as well.

1. Rush's site is so slow or overloaded at the time you are trying to

2. The webmaster at rushes site made a typo on the page and as a result

3. Since realplayer for linux is in a state of perpetual beta testing it

[expert] Hardware removal and configuring modem

2000-06-24 Thread Seak, Teng-Fong

I've still got Mandrake 7.0. I've removed the older Voodoo
graphic card from the PC and when I rebooted Linux, WOW, kudzu was
launched to tell me that the Voodoo card was removed and asked me if I
wanted to do such and such, etc. I'm really impressioned.

However, I'm thinking if the modem could be configured similarly,
it'd be very nice. Actually, the so-called "modem configuration "just
consists of asking what port the modem is connected to and make a
symbolic link to /dev/ttySx. If a novice user doesn't even know what
a port is or where it is, this configuration is useless. I'm pretty
sure this can be done more intelligently, ie, sending signals to a
port and waiting for responses from this one to determine if a modem
is connected to such and such port.

[expert] Quake III doesn't work with XFree 3.3.6 OR 4.0??

2000-06-24 Thread Jay Summet

Hello all,

I've been trying to get the Quake III demo working on my system:
Dual PII 333 192mb
Voodoo 3 3000 16MB AGP
SoundBlaster AWE 64
Mandrake 7.1 install (with XFree 3.3.6 initally).

I downloaded and installed the Q3Demo and everything appeared to go ok until I
ran it. When I did, the sound was very choppy, and the mouse would barely move.
I had to press the tab key 5 times to get down to exit and hit return (took it
about 2 seconds between moves.)

I figured it might be GPM, so I killed gpm off, no difference.
I figured I may as well try upgrading to XFree86 4.0 so I did so (downloading
directly from XFree86.org) and had the same problems. Then I noticed the
XFree86 4.0 mdk.rpm on the install CD, so I erased my current setup and used
that to upgrade to 4.0, same problem.

(X windows is working correctly in all cases other than the Q3Demo problems
outlined above.)

It appears that my version of Xfree doesn't matter, and I was wondering if
anybody else had fixed this problem?

Thanks,
Jay

consists of asking what port the modem is connected to and make a

This *does* work with external modems, since they work off of the
standard ports. The problem arrises when using an internal model,
becuase it frequently is on a non-standard irq. Because auto-probing
irq's is not recommended, it is not built into the kernel. So, if you
have a machine with two "real" serial ports (/dev/ttyS[01]) and an
internal ISA modem (/dev/ttyS2), the internal modem is not detectable
unless you have previously "setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq my_irq".

The dialog you spoke of does not appear when the modem can be
detected. (This is at least true in 7.1, I didn't do any significant
hardware changes other than video under 7.0)

Re: [expert] Zip Drive Compatibility

2000-06-24 Thread Jay Summet

I would suggest an IDE or SCSI model. I have a parallel port zip
drive, and have yet to be able to get it working under Linux. There are
drivers that claim to work, but I haven't gotten them working.

(Also, SCSI and IDE are MUCH faster than parallel port for data transfer).

I assume you want to be able to move the drive from machine to machine, so an
internal IDE wouldn't be optimal (unless you got one for each machine), and a
SCSI model would require a scsi adaptor in each computer that you want to use
it with. This is the route I'd suggest if you want to use the same drive on
more than one computer. Having a SCSI interface on a computer is always nice,
you never know what cool SCSI peripherals you might find at a garage sale ;.

You could probably find some cheap scsi adaptor cards on the net, you
don't need the latest and greatest for a zip drive...

Having a SCSI adaptor built into my motherboard, I'd go with SCSI if I had to
buy a zip drive now (already using my IDE ports ;).

If you can get parallel port support working under Linux, that would work well
for you, BUT, I'd suggest you buy your zip drive from somewhere that will let
you take it back if you are unable to get it working with linux.

Any capacity should work for you. I use a zip drive for part of a bare
metal recovery backup, and find I only need about 30 MB on the zip
drive. However, that's the minimum to get to a condition where I can
restore from tape in the second stage.

I believe that if you have the 250 MB version, it will read and write the
100 MB disks, so if I were buying one now, I'd look closely at the 250
MB. I don't know if they have a parallel port version, so check that out.

The paralle port model is far and away the easiest to move from computer
to computer.

The monitor was never been correctly identified but once configured does
not seem to cause any problems.

Hardware:

true. However, please note that the sudoers file ships with
ALL=(ALL):NOPASSWD

as an example. ALL does not mean "all the programs I have defined
to be run by people I have given access to." Instead, ALL means "every
program on the machine."

This can bite you, as it is a silent permission.

OK, then try escaping the quotes and the semicolon and any other shell
special characters in the original.

The point of the -c with or without the user profile, etc., depends on
what you are trying to do. You may not want the user profile for some
things. You may want some other profile, like that of the user you are
suing from. Not being a Microsoft product, Linux is not going to prohibit
you from doing something just because the developers can't think of a
reason why you would want to do it.

The sample I showed above does not load the profile, and works just
fine. I didn't load the profile in that one because I didn't need it.

Re: [expert] Quake III doesn't work with XFree 3.3.6 OR 4.0??

2000-06-24 Thread Warren Doney

QIII (full) worked fine with the 3.3.6 in 7.0, there are mouse probs in
4.0 that will not be fixed until 4.0.1 is released. Do you have glide
mesa installed (version that comes with quake is probably better
than the mandrake one)? There are drivers instructions at
http://www.linux.3dfx.com . IIRC I have seen a Mandrake rpm
for device 3dfx, so it might be on your CD, but you'll probably
need the voodoo 3 glide rpm. Don't download the X 3.3.5 from
3dfx.com though, as, 3.3.6 from Mandrake is better.

If you are still having probs, start it from a term (without "")
post the output (try killing it with ctrl+alt+esc-move cursor
-enter, or opening a new term with ctrl+alt +F1 whacking it
with top).

 Hello all,

I've been trying to get the Quake III demo working on my system:
 Dual PII 333 192mb
 Voodoo 3 3000 16MB AGP
 SoundBlaster AWE 64
Mandrake 7.1 install (with XFree 3.3.6 initally).

I downloaded and installed the Q3Demo and everything appeared to go ok
until I
ran it. When I did, the sound was very choppy, and the mouse would barely
move.
I had to press the tab key 5 times to get down to exit and hit return
(took it
 about 2 seconds between moves.)

I figured it might be GPM, so I killed gpm off, no difference.
I figured I may as well try upgrading to XFree86 4.0 so I did so
(downloading
directly from XFree86.org) and had the same problems. Then I noticed the
XFree86 4.0 mdk.rpm on the install CD, so I erased my current setup and
used
that to upgrade to 4.0, same problem.

(X windows is working correctly in all cases other than the Q3Demo
problems
 outlined above.)

It appears that my version of Xfree doesn't matter, and I was wondering if
anybody else had fixed this problem?

 Thanks,
 Jay

Yes, I did an install on /dev/hda1 and then configured hdb1 and hdc1 for

Re: [expert] OT: any quality PC keyboards?

I used to use a M$ Natural, which worked well for me. I have a partially
shattered elbow, which makes a normal 104 key keyboard very uncomfortable

Hacking Lite keyboard. Nice and small, and I can absolutely fly on this
thing, now that I am used to the layout, which is a little different. I
don't have the url for their website, but they may be worth checking
out for you. FWIW, they also make a more expensive version that can be
used with either a Sun/Mac/PC, but it is around $130US.

Re: [expert] diald - doesn't work

2000-06-24 Thread Monte Milanuk

Even though pppd now has dial-on-demand, it doesn't make diald
'un-necessary'. Diald still has some features that may make it desirable
in certain situations. If you have a home LAN and want to make sure that
your children aren't going places on the net during the wee hours of the
morning, you can set up accounting so that diald will not dial up the
internet during certain hours, or when packets are passed to it from
certain ip addresses, etc. Also, it can vary the connect time, depending
on how long your are online, i.e. if you are on for only a few minutes (a
periodic fetchmail/sendmail job), it will drop the connection after only
a minute or so of inactivity. If on the other hand, you've been online
for an hour, but are pausing to read a news site, it will wait 10-15
minutes before dropping the connection. And it is all configurable. I
had this set up at one time, on a Slackware 4.0 box. The trade off is
that it is definitely more difficult to set up
(more options, etc.)

You might want to look into man pppd. pppd now has an option to dial on

Re: [expert] 7.0-2 Hardware conflict

Anton,

Ok, I need to clarify myself a little: Font server crashes in GIMP
everytime I try to select a font. I can click and preview the first four
fonts in the list without problem. Click and preview number five locks the
program and creates the error mesage.

I am not completely familiar with the boot process. I see a comment that X
number of blocks were cleaned..followed by a statement that /dev/hdb1
reached maximal mount count, check forced..I watch the percent process. It
finishes with the statement that .01% is non contiguous. The login finishes
in a normal manner

Kppp is configured for server assigned addresses. I have two ISP's. I've
never had the *reset* problem before, if this is a *normal function* that
is all I need to know.

I don't know what precipitates the Gnome errors. I get the same error even
if I do nothing more than play solitaire and log out. [Gnome always starts
with two windows open.]

Everytime I log out I see many Gnome error messages. Here is a small sample:
rm: Cannot remove '/home/ibi/.gnome //gmc-0L6CF2': No such file or directory.
Gnome VT-warning **: Could not open help topic file NULL.
Warning: gnome_is_image_filename called, you should use gnome mime instead.

BTW, I don't think the AMD CPU is the problem. I am quite unsure about the
motherboard though. I don't know that I've ever seen the TYAN S1590s
mentioned in this list. In fact I don't recall any Tyan/VIA chip being
mentioned here.

Thanks to our list for your continuing support,

Pj
