[expert] Vertical Sync Settings for X!!!! BSR 3100V----OLD!

2000-09-04 Thread scrapmetaldevil

Does anyone know of the settings for an ancient BSR 3100V monitor for vertical
sync? I have tried dozens of combos but cannot get a display on this monitor
other than garble. Is there a site or database somewhere for old monitors that
I can get specs for them? I have searching for a week with no luck...please any
help will be appreciated. I guess it is closely related to the old Samtron
monitors made circa 1986-1988...it works, but I'd like to save this monitor
from the dump.

Sorry if this has been answered, I don't see a real one. Anyway to make
linux shutdown (poweroff) when halted you need to configure some things in
your kernel. If I remember correctly Linux-Mandrake comes with these
settings by default. Anyway with 2.2.16 (similar in other versions) you
need to select 'Advanced Power Management BIOS support' under 'General
Setup', this should be all you need. If your BIOS is buggy (ie if the
previous doesn't work) you can also try enableing 'Use real mode APM BIOS
call to power off'. Also note in earlier kernels (prior to 2.2.15?) there
is also an option something like 'Power off on shutdown', which needs to
be checked also. Hope that helps.

BTW: I have one computer I leave on all the time (server) and one that I
shut off regularly (my workstation), both run linux only . . . so I am
rather neutral on the debate!

Cheers ;)

Oops. My mistake.

The 1024+ patch has been in LILO since 21-3. Weird

Well, get the new LILO and see what happens still. It might make the
difference

Now I'm **really** sorry about the confusion.

It's available in the Mandrake 7.2 beta (which means, go to
http://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel and get all "lilo"-related binary
RPMs). Go get it.

If I understood what I read Asheesh, that new lilo uses the same

Re: [expert] Insanely Large IDE disk & Mandrake

2000-09-04 Thread Todd Marshall

Unfortunately then you didn't read far enough--as I said..I have a working
Linux installation...I'm not trying to boot from the large drive, just mount
swap on it...
the problem is that I cannot seem to make a workable partition table on the
drive... everytime it rereads the partition table it says that it finds
problems with it and that it won't work...
therefore, I believe the problem lies elsewhere--either in the number of
heads/cyl that the kernel "sees" or else in the partition table itself and
how I make it...
that's my problem...just SEEING the hard drive--lilo doesn't care if the
hard drive even exists :-)

In 7.1 you can use LILO - it knows about big drives. I have 2 - 2G
partitions on my
drive, both of them before my / partition. LILO is in the MBR and works
fine. I
couldn't get grub to work at all.

If I kill the script-based bit, then I never get to the PAP. BOTH are

2000-09-04 Thread Foris Gabor

Dear Asheesh,

I tried to make head or tail what you said and let me sum it up for
checking.
I connect two computers together through the serial ports(com2). One of
the computers is equipped with full linux mandrake with Gnome window
manager. The other computer is just a motherboard, a 486-DX2 with 4Mb
memory and 512k video memory + iocard, and a 5.25 floppy drive.
What i have gathered from your writing is the following. Make a linux
boot disk and boot the "stupid computer". You will have a text terminal.
Now you telnet to the server and do the steps listed. You will have kde
running on the "stupid computer" which you can be activated by ctrl-alt-f7.
you exit from the telnet session. you follow the remaining steps.
Could you please verify wether these steps are right or wrong, whether the
hardware configuration is proper for this or not.

Thank you in advance,

A LAN server hardly needs to be a dual athlon

How about an SB Live! I have one, and it's great. I use the Cambridge

What about the latest NVidia chip? Reviews I've read

Umm.. It's fairly well documented in /usr/doc/menu-{version}, or even just
look at some of the entries in /usr/lib/menu to see how it works.

[expert] Dual Athlon Processors

2000-09-04 Thread Jason Pierce

Hello all, I'm thinking about building a new system. Does anyone know of
a(n inexpensive?) mobo that can house 2 Athlon Thunderbirds that works with
linux? I have heard that Tyan(www.tyan.com) is supposed to be shipping one
sometime this month, but could find no refference to it on the Tyan site.
There are no dual boards listed in the AMD recommended list. I'm thinking
about using the system as a high traffic LAN server, and/or high-end gaming
system. For the gaming part, what would be a good sund card and speaker
system? Are there any sound cards compatable with linux that have multiple
sound in ports? I would like to beable to attach a cd changer, record
player, tape deck, etc. Some of the Dolby speaker systems are pretty nice,
anyone have any experience with them? I plan on using a Voodoo 5(or latest
Voodoo at time of building) for video. I would also like to use multiple
PCI UDMA/100 controller cards. Is it possible to use more than one PCI
hard drive controller card?

Thanks, Jason Pierce

Because it's (apparently) throwing out the script based login. You never
saw this under Windows because the DUN client automagically detects the
authentication protocol in use. But at least you now know why they were

Re: [expert] terminal

You can remotely set up a graphical thingy using the following commands:

(Assuming that "server" is the headless computer, and "workstation" is
your machine that you can do stuff on, like us a monitor and email the
Mandrake lists)

telnet server

[user@server] $ Xvnc 2> /dev/null > /dev/null &

[user@server] $ export DISPLAY=localhost:0
[user@server] $ startkde&
[user@server] $ exit

Then, from workstation:

[user@workstation] $ vncviewer

Then enter "server" as the VNC server
and :0 as the port

You now have a complete remote GUI access thingy.

Try it: you'll like it!

Re: [expert] Insanely Large IDE disk & Mandrake

2000-09-04 Thread JASON SNYDER

I have the exact same drive running on my Mandrake 7.1 system. In fact I even
had it running on a Pentium 133 for a little while before I had the money
together to upgrade the rest of my system.

I have tried the drive both with the controller you are using (built into an
ABIT BE6-II) and with a Promise controller on a 430VX based board and an ASUS
K7V w/o audio. Both of my experiences with the Promise controller have been
good ones. The biggest problem that I had was with the ASUS board where I had
to move the Promise controller to a different slot to clear up a conflict that
crippled my ability to use UDMA modes. This was not really do to the ASUS
board, but really to the way that Intel designed resource handling into the IBM
PC architecture. I mean from the modern day standpoint the whole architecture
is ass backwards including PCI. With the ABIT board it was designed such a way
so that I couldn't get a functional configuration (unless I somehow managed to
miss the one stripped down config that would work right) that didn't also
conflict with the the integrated Ultra66 controller. In certain configurations
I could get a drive to be recognized, but I couldn't get UDMA to work.

One thing to consider is that I have noticed that explicitly defining ide2 and
ide3 is not necessary with Mandrake 7.1 with the HPT366 and the Promise Ultra66
controllers. If anything it gets in the way when you are hunting around for a
configuration that doesn't conflict with something on the motherboard (m/b) or
moving from one m/b to the next. Taking out those setting is what made it easy
for me to move from a P133 to a BE6-II m/b to an ASUS m/b (which I'm living on
now).

A second thing to consider is that if there is a conflict, having default
settings in mdk 7.1 set to fully optimize disk access will cause more problems
then with it turned off. It doesn't look like your machine does that in the
sections of the startup log that you gave me (I noticed that you cut out a
section, but it is something to check for. Going down this path it also would
be a good idea to try another device like your DVD-ROM on the controller.

It looks like you may have a bum disk, but it is always a good idea to check all
other possibilities before bringing it back.

To give you an idea of what it looks like when things are happy here is my

You can burn the image to the CD, although there is another trick you
can do with it under Linx.

If you download it to your hard drive you can mount the image as another
drive. You can then copy the files out of the image to another area of
your hard drive and install from that.

Hope this helps.

You may want to check user permissions as allowd by your SMB.CONF file. Of
Particular note would be the section "Valid Users"

; The following two entries demonstrate how to share a directory so that two

[expert] PC NFS client using pcnfsd or NIS

2000-09-04 Thread Mads Rasmussen

Hi there,

Have anyone tried installing a NFS server and then
accessing from a windows pc (95/98)?
I know that Samba is a better and perhaps more
secure solution but my provider has bloked the samba ports.
I have a NFS server running on my linux mandrake
and I am able to mount them from another linux system but alas not from
windows.

My first idea was to install pcnfsd the pc
authentication demon but I think it messes up when the system uses shadowed
passwords. I installed the shadowed verson of pcnfsd but still no
access.
By the way, the configuration of the demon is
rather weird. You don´t specify anything related to the users.

My second option was to use NIS although I´d rather
not since the server is standalone and therefore I don´t need the NIS
distributed features.
However the pc clients I have tried to use is
giving the option of authentication using NIS.

I now have a NIS server up and running but my pc
client still doesn´t authenticate.

I have tried the following clients:

ICE-NFS
OmniNet Lite

Any ideas

With regards,

It seems that you don't have the "smb-client" package installed.
Install it from the mandrake CD and your problem should be solved.

Dear Tom,

Approximately those things were in my mind what you have put donw in the
previous letter even if unuttered. That is, I understood your points. The
only thing i could not figure out is what is NIC? Some sort of cable or
modem?
Your idea about installing a linux on the old computer is hidered by the
fact that is has got no hdd. That is why I wanted to turn this into a
graphical terminal. Or more than that.

I'm running 7.0 and it doesn't seem to have smbclient of smbtar. Aren't

access the zip drive in a windows client for backups but I can't find smbtar

Re: [expert] Insanely Large IDE disk & Mandrake

2000-09-04 Thread Mark Weaver

I can tell before I read past the first few lines of your message that you
didn't "read" the partitioning documentation for "large" drives before you
installed. :) If you had read that you would have seen that LILO can't
see past cylinder 1024 which is why you kernel is having a problem.

I'm scolding you tongue in cheek cause I did the same thing once.

anyway, you will want to make some modifications to the partitions you're
going to setup for an installation that will not give your kernel a fit
when you boot such a HUGE friggin drive. MAN! I wish mine was that
BIG! :)

So, here's the layout: (this is the bare minimum basic layout)

/boot = 15MB# this partition is where your kernel will boot from

/home = 5GB # this partition will contain all your data files and your
# home directory and the home dir's of any other users on
# the system

/ (root) = (...)#this partition can be as big as you want to make it
#since you've got 39GB's left however it should
#be at least 5GB in size
+

Now, if you want to install and use Grub as your boot loader instead of
LILO that's fine too. Grub doesn't mind big drives at all. You won't need
to make all these other partitions, HOWEVER, I would strongly advise that
you DO make a /home partition because in the event of something BAD
happening on your Linux system that you can't get figured out and the only
solution to the problem is a fresh install in the OS placing a partition
on the Hard drive defined as /home will keep your data files safe when you
format all the other partitions of the linux drive to do the install. I
fresh intall on newly formatted partitions takes a fraction of the time
that an install over top of a previous install takes. That's because the
installation program decides that it MUST read ever entry and analyze them
all in the RPM database. That can take quite a while.

But that's another story. For now, define your partitions in a similar
mannar as I've outlined here for you and you'll be booting happily into
Linux on your insanely lArge drive before you know it.

Just thinking about this some more, I don't think that you'll be able to
run X on a PC running terminal emulation and connecting over a serial
port (I think this is what you want to do). Connecting a text only
terminal on a serial port is pretty easy to do, you just have to add a
line to /etc/inittab to run a getty on the serial port, then hook up the
pc with a null modem cable, run some terminal emulation software and
make sure the settings in your terminal emulation software match those
set up in the getty on the Linux box you're connecting to. Problem is -
I can't think of any terminal emulation software that would be able to
understand X codes. I know that there are terminals that can do this -
after all X was designed to run on a central machine and display on many
terminals (it actually works much better/faster this way then the way
it's currently often used on Linux boxen with a single user at a time -
as an aside to anybody who doesn't think X runs very well on their
machine: it wasn't designed to be run the way it often is on a Linux
box). Sorry if I'm rambling a bit here... My point is that when you hook
up a PC to your Linux box on the serial port, and run terminal emulation
software on it, then all you've got on the PC running emulation is the
capabilities of the terminal it's emulating. Generally this doesn't
include the ability to run X. eg If you've got it running VT100
emulation (pretty much the most popular), then all the PC will
understand is VT100 codes, which don't include X. If you've got
reasonable hardware (say 486 and above) you'd be better off installing
Linux on it properly, and sticking a NIC in.

Cool.

Is there a way to do a test run - do everything but turn the laser on?

I have a USB Que drive and it loves to choke on anything above 2X - mac and
windows anyway.

I'd like to know if it can get through a 4x burn on Linux without making a
new coaster (I have a full set)

Hey list
Since I have upgraded to Mandrake 7.1 (from 7.0) I can't use my
homebanking program, because the program - or is it Wine - can't get
access to the modem.
I have not changed anything in my setup (and as you can see, my internet

I have tried to change to the /dev/ttyS1 as well, but no difference.
What's wrong?
Thanks in advance

Now why couldn't they have told me that instead of simply saying that Linux

One also wonders what is the point of bothering with PAP, since I've

Hi !

Thanks the responses to everyone who helped me to solve the mapping
problem. But this Access stuff sucks ! I'm going mad. When I want to
access the databases stored on the server frm more then one client it
rejects to map the drive and the access program gives me the "Runtime
error" message. The dialog box says that the file is in use so it can't
open or do anything with it. It seems to me that the Samba locks the file
(or the client program wants to do it and Samba allows this ***
behaviour). How can I resolove this. Either to reject the locking or not
to lock the files natively. Any help appriciated. SOS !

Xfree 4.01 is very likely since initial 4.0 support was in mdk7.1. A stable
release 2.4 kernel isn't available yet so it's unlikely that'll be there unless
maybe the kernel is released very soon. I'm hoping the stable release of KDE2 is
going included with the next Mandrake but maybe not? Or maybe they're just
waiting until KDE2 and/or the 2.4 kernel is released to ship mdk7.2.

If you don't have a burner (or forever forgetting to buy blank cds like me :))
you can mount the image directly onto the filesystem and copy the files needed
for installation out of the image then do a hard drive install.

mount someimage.iso -r -t iso9660 -o loop /mnt/image

When you say 'old pc', how old do you mean, and what sort of video
card/monitor does it have? This is really what will determine what you
can display on it. If you've got an EGA monitor or earlier hooked up to
it, then I doubt X will do anything except destroy it. I've only ever
hooked up really old machines as terminals (XT's running emulation,
VT100's) so I've never been able to try it, but if you've got a terminal
with a VGA monitor, you might be able to get X running on it - just
remember to stay within the capabilities of the monitor on the terminal.
Probably the type of terminal emulation you've got running on the old pc
will also be important, and might make running X on the terminal
impossible, eg running VT100 emulation you won't be able to use X,
because a VT100 has no idea what to do with any of the X stuff. You'd
need to run emulation that understood about X. Not much help sorry, this
isn't something I have experience with.
