[expert] Postfix and getting rid of the machine name

2000-10-30 Thread Andy Judge

I can't get rid of the machine name when trying to send E-mail to my
accounts. I uncommented the myorigin = $mydomain line in main.cf and
reloaded postfix, but no such luck. I am running only one computer that is
multi-purpose. When I send E-mail to just the domain name, it is rejected
by the server even though I have an account. When I send E-mail with the
machine name, I get the mail. I know there is a simple answer to this, but
I can't seem to figure it out.

[expert] 7.2 and Xfree86 3.3.x

Has anyone tried to get LM 7.2 working with the old X server package
yet? The VMWare site is pretty adamant that they aren't ready for 4.0.1
yet, and I need to put together a new machine with VMWare. It's simple
enough to install 7.1 instead, but I'd like to try 7.2 so long as I can
get the X server correct without having to build it myself.

Re: [expert] Configuring NAT client

2000-10-30 Thread Greg Stewart

The configuration should be the same for your linux client as your Windows
clients. Whether you have a DNS server on your network or not, all the
clients need to use some DNS from somewhere in order to resolve FQDN names
for the internet. You might check the DNS configuration of the windows
clients for their DNS server config.

If you are using DHCP to configure the windows clients, yo might try the
same with the linux client. Or on a Window box, open an "NT Prompt", or
whatever it's called now--I stopped administrating Win2K, as I can't stand
it--and type: ipconfig /all if that gives you an error (and I think I
remember it doing so for me on Win2K) type ipconfig /? to get the correct
syntax. This will print the ip configuration information to the stdout.

I'm not completely sold on the idea of emulation vs dual-boot but consider
that if you do use the emulation you only need enough disk space to hold
the apps you're going to run under Windows and a minimal Windows
installation. There's no need to replicate browsers, all the utility
programs, graphics/sound apps, dial-up, etc. If you carefully install
Windows, removing all that stuff, it'll take up very little space. At the
moment I've got Windows, MS Word and Excel loaded into 370meg.

Re: [expert] root password

2000-10-30 Thread Greg Stewart

I did forget (and had to be reminded by a friend) that in addition to group
root, the user should belong to group wheel. And, apparently this does not
automatically make the user "equal" to root, but gives most root
priveledges.

As well, if the linux "root" account gets "screwed", as it can in
Windows/Novell, the system is usually "just as screwed".

For almost all maintenance, it really is best to log in as a simple user,
and su to root for the administration. If you really feel you need the path
variables set in that account you can add them to the user's local .bashrc
file. I tend to type the path at the command line automatically, so I don't
even notice this. And, I can't even remember the last time I had to log in
as root--I 'su' for everything just fine, and this protects "root" from any
damage. So, I have no need for multiple admin accounts.

Also, I (rather automatically at this point) locked down my installation a
bit tighter than most do, and my own way (msec just pissed me off too much,
and I built my own security from the "open to crackers" install--it's the
only way I could get things to actually work). I had originally disabled the
ability to log in at all without root's password and forgot this when I
tried enter in linux single mode without it.

No, you can make vmware use your existing windows install, but you've
got to do it right. First boot into windows and create a few new
hardware profiles. (Have a few to screw up before you break
something.;)) Then set up a virtual machine which uses an existing
physical disk (hda1 probably) rather than the virtual disk. When windows
boots tell it you in profile xyz and it will reconfigure itself for the
video, etc it finds in the vmware environment.

This way you can boot into windows native and let it run with your abc
video, sound card, other hardware, or start windows in vmware and let it
use the vmware xyz hardware. All the same software available in both
environments.

I believe you'll find that the g++-3 files are in libstdc++-devel, not in
gcc-c++-2.95. That's the problem we've reported here ad nauseum, there
are no ANSI C++ include files in gcc-c++-2.95. But you're sure right that
you need to keep those two groups of files separate. gcc seems to sort
things out if you keep them in the proper directories.

The problem is (at least if you've only got the single disk) Mandrake
doesn't supply egcs, and without 'some' headers - particularly
iostream.h - you can't compile anything at all. The only other solution
would be to go bacl to 7.0, but then you lose a few other goodies and
generally have dependency problems if you try to take them down a
version. If need be that's what I'll do, but as last resort.

Using Kppp I am regularly in the net: but its a bit erratic. Sometimes
it works fine, others it generally takes 3 tries - first, pppd died
sudenly, time out while waiting for pppd, and mostly, third time llucky.
If thats no goog, make sure you've given it the right username, its not
the same as your email name (that you use with W9x). If your ISP can't
give you this, and you've got W9x, you can get it from there - let me
know if you need help with this.
POP is a little more tricky, but the same applies, only here the
relevant info goes into the Preferences in Netscape. I won't go into
details now - try to get the ISP home page first, then you can surf and
send e-mail. Do that first, then see to the bit that really matters.

this figure right and am I really running this slow? I checked the known

It is worst than nothing. You are mixing headers from egcs and compiling
with gcc-2.95, for example. EGCS libstdc++ is version 2, and g++-2.95
libstdc++ is version 3. If you have correctly installed both egcs-c++ and

Here's an option I haven't seen anyone mention yet: if you haven't
already, check out the excellent "sudo" package. RPMs should be available
on www.rpmfind.net. It lets you set up a user to have full or partial root
access without having to have the root password, and it logs everything
the user does as root.

For example, on my home machine, I have account "jeff". I've set up sudo
so that "jeff" has root priviledges. If I want to do something that only
"root" can do, like run "vipw", I would run it like this:

$ sudo vipw

Sudo would then ask me for my password (as opposed to the root password),
would log the fact that I tried to run vipw, and would execute vipw for me
as root.

Advantages:
1. It saves lots of logging out and in, having to open a separate xterm
just for root access, etc.
2. It provides a log of what I've done, in case I need to backtrack.
3. If I ever see that someone has actually logged in as root, I know
there's something odd going on, because I do it so rarely.
4. If I need to recover root access, I can use sudo access to do it. "sudo
passwd root" ought to work (I haven't tried it yet), and even if it
doesn't I can get a root shell with "sudo su -" (which I've verified
works).

I don't know if it's any help, but reading this thisafternoon, I had to
prove it was so - I just don'tbelieve things. Anyway I think I've
sorted it out in my case.

I was running 7.0, where there are no problems. I changed to 7.1 this
month, and hadn't used c++ under the new release until today. BOTH these
are mag cover disks, so no supplementary disks.

If this applies, use kpackage to uninstall ALL egcs packages. Then, from
the 7.0 disk install the whole lot again. You have to do straight egcs
first to avoid dependency problems.
After this, MOVE the header files in /usr/include/g++-2 to /usr/include.

I may have to do a bit more fiddling first, but at least this gets the
old `Hello World' program to compile and work. It's better than nothing.

[expert] How does MandrakeUpdate work?

2000-10-30 Thread Jeff Groves

I'd like to set up my own set of customized packages that will work with
MandrakeUpdate.

MandraekUpdate appears to use two files on the server, 'description' and
'ls-lR'

Creating the 'ls-lR' file is obvious, but how do I create the 'description'
file? It appears to be information from the RPM packages, but I could not
figure out the rpm options that generate it.

Also, how does MandrakeUpdate figure out all the dependency requirements?

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ummm... You have it backwards
The Slot A is the Athlon.. It has 512k of L2 cache separate from the CPU die
Socket A is the Athlon Thunderbird with 256k of L2 cache on the CPU die.
There is also the Duron, which is the economy version of the Thunderbird.
Its Socket A also, but only has 64k of L2 cache on the CPU die.

Actually, you have that backward. The original Athlon is a Slot-A (off die
L2 cache) processor. The Duron as well as the current Thunderbird Athlon
(Both have on-die L2 cache) are Socket A processors. All new Athlon's are
socket processors. Check www.anandtech.com and www.tomshardware.com for

About true. Thunderbird is just the "codename". It is marketed as an

Yep by default the VM uses a virtual disk that is saved as a fileif you
want to use existing installations...check the VMware documents for a section
entitled "RAW Disk Access" (I think)..admittedly there isn't a lot there...one
of the problems with it is you essentially have to set up two hardware profiles
with the windows stuff (one for the VM and one for the normal boot).
Never tried it myself becasue for me it's sounded like a really bad idea...good
luck with it.

Ok, just to weigh in on this, b/c its monday and I don't want to work just
yet ... VMWare can diddle with all sorts of different operating systems,
Windoze included. It can read from an existing install or you can install
the guest operating system into a special file that VMWare creates. The
first step is to install and configure VMWare, which its sounds like you
did just fine. The next is to configure the guest operating system. USE
THE WIZARD!! Its a little confusing the first time through but a whole lot
easier than trying to get it right yourself the first time. I know...

There is an option for getting VMWare to look at an existing install of
the guest operating system. Just point it at the right partition. If
Lilo is installed in the MBR of that disk, you WILL get the lilo boot
prompt! VMWare contains its own bios, a Phoenix bios if I am not
mistaken, and this is what reads the boot device. To install Windows,
either put a boot floppy in the A drive or change the bios settings to
boot off of the CD. This will NOT affect the real bios for your box.
Then be prepared to run one of the scariest commands on a running box
format c:\ :) It took two of us a full minute to actually press the enter
key :) We actually flipped back and forth between the install window and
a few other windows just to make sure nothing was happening to any of our
actual partitions :)

Basically, what VMWare does is intercept all hardware level accesses and
makes the guest operating system think its in control and really doing
things. In reality, you can only give up half of your total memory, and
if you have installed the guest operating system under VM, it lives in a
special file and touches no other parts of the drives. It also means if
you have VMWare running, you need to tell it to let go of the floppy or CD
if you want to use them.

[expert] 7.0 install & Lilo

2000-10-30 Thread Josh V Friberg-Wyckoff

I have been trying to install Mandrake 7.0 to dual boot my machine. I am
using System Commander and I need the install to put Lilo in the first
sector of the boot partition.

But every time I get to that point of the install it just skips asking me
that question and it goes on to configuring X.

In the Cd documentation it says it will ask me where I want to put Lilo but
it never does. I have tried every install option (normal, custom and
expert)!

I have had no problems installing RH 6.0 & 6.2. If Mandrake is based on
Red Hat why is this not working. Is it a flaw with the install.

Yes...and that's fine. And as long as the Linux world doesn't want to
dominate the individual desktop market, there's no reason to change
that. But that's NOT what they're saying; in fact they're saying exactly
the opposite. If they want to move onto the desktop they're going to have
to make it a lot more stable, a lot more predictable and they're going to
have to stop breaking installations every time they release a product.

Documentation just won't do it. Until there's an adherence to simple
things like file location standards and until making the programs
bullet-proof rather than glitzy, we're going to have a bunch of stuff
hanging on top of a rock-solid Linux that's just going to frustrate
people. My "maintenance" time has gone up by a couple orders of magnitude
relative to Windows. How many people are going to deal with that when
their goal isn't to play with computer but rather get their work done.

I know it's not popular to say such things in a Linux conference but
please understand, I love Linux. I'm just disappointed that it's no
easier to operate this Linux than it was to operate Solaris 5 years ago.
In many respects it's harder as we're dealing with a much looser
development model.

Just for clarification, this rpm exists on the extensions disk. The
extensions disk doesn't come with most of the shrinkwrap packages that
Mandrake sells. THAT'S the problem. If you have downloaded the two-iso

Hi!

I was reading this thread and I want to comment what happens to me.
I have win98 installed in /dev/hda1 and linux somewhere else (suppose
/dev/hda5 or something like that)
If I configured vmware to boot from /dev/hda1 it gives an error...
but if I configure to boot from /dev/hda., vmware goes to lilo... then
I could choose to boot the already running linux (muy loco esto :) ...)
o boot win98 from /dev/hda1.
What I see is that if you use vmware you must think that is another machine
making use of your hard disk. in this case /dev/hda and you can't
boot
/dev/hda1 without lilo... except that you have the mbr clean...
(remember format /MBR from MS-DOS).

Re: [expert] VMware finding Win98

2000-10-30 Thread BillK

Larry, something that while it might not help a lot, at least will
provide a reason for whats happened. Unix/Linux is a different way of
thinking to MS. It depends a lot on "knowing" where to go for
documentation (i.e., standard places on the system) and be able to go
from there. MS does a lot of handholding (which in my opinion is better
for the user!, wake up Linuxworld, we need good help docs). Looking
from the outside, your problems stem from expecting documentation/help
to be presented in the MS way - sorry, but aint gonna happen here!

For vmware, the install should have given you a set of (excellent) html
docs accessable from the help button on the VM window. "man vmware"
gives a good basic intro - a standard unix "thing", dont know something,
so type "man keyword" or "man -K search_for_Keyword", and obviously to a
unix person, "man man" for help on help. "/usr/doc/vmware" has some
basic files including an excellent readme for problems, again a standard
place for docs. If all else fails, do a "find / -name vmware\*" as root
and check out all the obvious files it returns until you know how its
structured.

Its all very well for someone to say RTFM, but you do have to know where
to find it first!

libstdc++-devel-2.95.2-7mdk.i586.rpm.

I would tell you that it is on your CDs, but after some previous mails in the
list perhaps it is missing.
Check if you can find it on your media or grab it at http://rpmfind.net

[expert] c++ standard header missing

2000-10-30 Thread xylonite

Hi all,

I have problem when compiling this prg.

My Info
Package : courier-0.28.tar.gz (http://www.courier-mta.org)
uname -a : Linux xylonite.org 2.2.15-4mdksecure #1 SMP Wed May 10 14:16:48 CEST 2000
i686 unknown
Distro : Mandrake 7.1 (Essential Pack 7.1)

#When I'm running 'make' command it's say

iostream.h is part of the C++ standard header files, it looks like there is no C++
standard header in my box.
To confirm this use the following command:

   find / -name "iostream.h"

but no return :)

#I check with webmin and kpackage to confirm this and my box have this package is this
enaugh? or is there any more package i'm missing?
- gcc-c++-2.95.2-7mdk.i586.rpm < installed
- libstdc++-2.95.2-7mdk.i586.rpm < installed
- libstdc++-compat-2.95.2-7mdk.i586.rpm < installed

if anything I'm missing here? any url to download? (perhaps a good c++ header and
working with 7.1 ;))

thanks,
regards,
fay

Mandrake 7.2 (and all the betas) use CUPS as printing system, so you
cannot use printtool for printer administration. Use kups or go to
http://localhost:631/ instead.

It might help to run kups, from within a x-terminal, here you can make
the final configure.
Solved my problem, from mandrake guide.

Increase read access to these files in /var/spool/lpd/lp to other, this could
help you.
