Can you post the results of rpm -qa|grep kde here please? That will give me a
better idea of the problem.

If you update your computer now by FTP using the "network.img on a
floppy method" you will be prompted if you would like to have an
autoinstall disk created. I had no problem and I went for 100%
development package setup.

Better or another answer:

Check your /etc/hosts file and make sure that your machine can talk to

You may not like my answer the autoisntall got to big for a floppy unless

Also an ls -l of all the rpm's you downloaded to isntall.

the kbuildsycoca was the correct answer. However if you have any applnk
contents under /home/user/.kde/share/applnk you are sometimes asking for
trouble.

Someone else told you that if you do not want to take the risks do not run
beta code, and I agree with that statement. However, there is no single file
that provides the info to kcontrol. When the menus are built from the files
in /usr/lib/menus there is a menu system built in /usr/share/applnk and under
that is Configuration/KDE and in that directory is a .directory file that
tells that this is where kcontrol is built from.

However, if you alter that file for some reason, or it gets corrupt this will
cause you problems. All you need to do at that point is run update-menus as
root, wait a few moments, restart KDE and you should be set, provided you
have the right packages.

No, you can't. The code is in a state of change and the files used to create
the menu entries are consistantly changing. This is a risk with code in
active development. You wouold need to know which one of 500 files is messing
things up.

You are welcome for the termendous hours I put in building you packages. Do
you know what the following words mean:

Beta - unstable test release of an updated development package. Bug fixing is
going on.

Unsupported - means the distributitor supplies no support, you are on your
own. And if you ask for support you better be nice our you will be ignored.

README - The file placed in every directory, that says all of the above that
people should read, but never do.

DON_T_READ_THIS - the file that was put into the same directory with the
hopes that since no-one ever reads the README they may read a file that say's
DON't READ THIS!

__o   .oooO
I started from Mandrake 7.1, 3.0.4-4x, so had 2 intermediate steps.
Tho I found many threads with problems, no clear-cut solutions were
offered. I opted for
caution because of the nature of the prog. Besides, rpm's not that
large
a download. And
I don't know that the 'intermediate' dependencies would have gone away
on my system.
In this instance, rather 1 or 2 'unnecessary' steps that take only
a few
minutes than 1 misstep
that'll take a lot longer to correct.
I did most of this from kpackage, except the --rebuilddb, and where noted.
Here's what I did:
ignore: rpm-3.0.3-5x.i386.rpm    kpackage doesn't display,
older than 3.0.3-43mdk
ignore: rpm-3.0.3-6x.i386.rpm    kpackage doesn't display,
older than 3.0.3-43mdk
uninstall: rpm-devel-3.0.3-43mdk.i586.rpm
no dependencies, so update: rpm-3.0.4-4x.i386.rpm
rpm --rebuilddb
no dependencies, so update: rpm-3.0.4-5x.i386.rpm
rpm --rebuilddb
   rpm-3.0.4-6x.i386.rpm requires libbz2.so.0 in bzip2-0.9.5d-2.i386.rpm
this is older
than my current: bzip2-1.0.1-6mdk and there are several
packages that require this,
also, there are several conflicting files between the
two versions, although,
bzip2-1.0.1-6mdk does not have libbz2.so.0, so from the
command line:
   rpm -i --force bzip2-0.9.5d-2.i386.rpm
   rpm -i --force bzip2-1.0.1-6mdk.i586.rpm
   rpm --rebuilddb
no dependencies, so update: rpm-3.0.4-6x.i386.rpm
rpm --rebuilddb
no dependencies, so update: rpm-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm
rpm --rebuilddb
no dependencies, so update: rpm-devel-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm
So, now I'm back to where I was two months ago, except I have a few
old bzip2-0.9.5d libraries that are not overwritten by bzip2-1.0.1-6mdk
After each upgrade step of rpm, I tried to view Guppi-0.35.2-1.i586.rpm
in kpackage and I got the exact same error every time, up through and including
the final 3.0.5-27mdk. Error:
"only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version
of RPM"

[expert] 2.4.1 compile with CD-RW - quick question (I hope)

2001-02-03 Thread Neal Lippman

I have just been doing a "make xconfig" for the 2.4.1 kernel (I have MDK 7.2
installed with the default 2.2.18-mdk kernel running).

I have to cd devices: at /dev/hdc is a Pioneer DVD-105S DVD drive, and at
/dev/hdd is an HP CDRW drive. When I installed MDK, it was smart enough to
automatically configure scsi emulation support for the CDRW (although I
haven't actually burned a CD yet to see that it all works).

In doing the kernel config, as I understand things I need to include the
following to make this IDE-based CDRW work: SCSI support with generic SCSI
enabled but no specific SCSI drivers needed (because I don't really have a
SCSI card); enhanced IDE support; loopback support (for using the CD burning
software, among other things); SCSI-emulation support.

Does that sound right?

I started from Mandrake 7.1, 3.0.4-4x, so had 2 intermediate steps.

Tho I found many threads with problems, no clear-cut solutions were
offered. I opted for
caution because of the nature of the prog. Besides, rpm's not that large
a download. And
I don't know that the 'intermediate' dependencies would have gone away
on my system.
In this instance, rather 1 or 2 'unnecessary' steps that take only a few
minutes than 1 misstep
that'll take a lot longer to correct.

My first thoughts were skeptical. Very skeptical until... I remembered
how I would "hack" (program, uh hum, yeah) around with Windows Registry
files configuring it like it was nobody's business and thought, "Yeah, I
can see it now!" "They can do it!" This is my thoughts on making it
possible:

You know how wine uses the dll? Well, you can use windows client APIs
like msconfig located in C:/Windows/S.. oops! It has been awhile LOL
C:\Windows\System directory, winipconfig located in C:/ ..darn!
C:\Windows directory. Would not those programs provide a means . o O
(reverse-engineer) Who said that! like a template (a map) to read and
gather information from windows configuration whether it be registry,
win.ini, autoexec.bat, etc? By setting a program to "monitor" and record
the "activities" (inner-workings) of these rather "knowledgeable"
programs of the innerworkings of windows, you should be in beta by
Valentine's day! I am an accomplished windows guru and wouldn't mind
joining the developer group to make this program a reality.

3.0.3 - forget. I solved my rpm problems by going to the rpm ftp site,
finding my version (which was at 3.0.4 at the time) and incrementally
upgrading until I reached 3.0.5-27. If you decide to try this, don't
worry about using the intermediate RH rpm's along the way. I did a
manual rebuilddb with each. There may be 2 dependency issues along
the
way - don't disregard them. 1 will be a menu upgrade, the 2nd bzip2.
It's not necessary to address upgrading bzip itself - that's a
dependency nightmare. There's a libbzip that'll solve your problem.
Not
a single pkg number warning since. I also haven't seen a convincing
argument to go all the way to 4.0.x either.
This route may be tedious but it's safe - rpm's not a proggy to
mishandle.
My current version is: rpm-3.03-43mdk.i586.rpm
On ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-3.0.x/ among others, there are:
rpm-3.0.3-4x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.3-5x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.3-6x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-4x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-5x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-6x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.5-7.5x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.5-7.6x.i386.rpm
In late November, I upgraded from 3.0.3-43mdk to 3.0.5-27mdk.
There were no dependency issues then.  Yesterday, I downgraded back
to 3.0.3-43mdk (which came with Mandrake 7.0), as a test to see what would
happen.  Are you saying I should upgrade to each of the following
in sequence?
rpm-3.0.3-43mdk.i586.rpm
current version
rpm-3.0.3-5x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.3-6x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-4x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-5x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.4-6x.i386.rpm
rpm-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm
If there are no dependencies going directly from rpm-3.0.3-5x.i386.rpm
to
rpm-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm, why go through all of the steps?  What
does it by you?  If there is an intermediate dependency that eventually
goes away, who cares?

Updates work fine, but you might have to "force" a few of them.

As a result earlier ones might fail giving you dependancy errors...

Have you looked in /var/cache/grpmi ?

Some questions about Mandrake Update

1. Has anyone every actually tested the "Normal Updates"? The reason
I ask is that I have a 7.2 system with no maintenance other than
"Normal Updates" up to a few days ago, and I get dependancy errors
trying to install some of the latest updates.
cups 1.1.6-2.1mdk produces a whole string of dependancies and invites
one to force/quit.
the xemacs 21.1.14-1.1mdk series chugs away for a long time, then
reports a dependancy error in some man file and quits without offering
the force/quit option.

2. There are quite a few updates for KDE. Can these really be
installed from an active KDE, or will they break my system?

First, yes Mandrake's update works quite well.
Like you I did have a problem with the latest update to cups. Cups needs the
libcups1-1.1.6-2.1mdk package. For whatever reason a large number of the update
sites does not have this on the download folder. I had to go to some site in
France and download and install this package after I screwed up my system by
forcing the installation of cups.

RE: [expert] Internet connection sharing...

2001-02-03 Thread Neal Lippman

Assuming you are trying to get rid of Sygate, what you would do is to use
the Linux system as the gateway computer - the Linux system would, ideally,
have two nics, one connected to your internal LAN and the other to your
outside connection, whether cable modem, DSL, dial-up, etc.

On the Linux system you would use ipchains (or iptables in the 2.4.x kernel)
to configure that system for firewalling, routing, packet forwarding etc.
THe IPCHAINS HOWTO is the thing to read for how to create the firewalling
rules. I don't think there is yet an IPTABLES howto.

The other machines on your lan that need to go through the Linux gateway to
get to the net would reference that machine as the gateway, just like they
do for Sygate, and you would ideally use non-routed IP addressed
(192.168.x.x, for instance) for your internal IP addresses.

You can run dhcpd (the dhcp server daemon) on the Linux box to provide IP
addresses to your internal computers via dhcp if you like.

Another, even better way (IMHO) to set up this kinds of a setup is to use a
dedicated solution such as the Linksys home network router which connects
your home lan to the outside network. Netgear and Dlink make similar
products. THe advantage is that it is much simpler to have a dedicated
hardware solution just handling this task (I think), but you can do much
more sophisticated things with Linux and ipchains if you need to, like
blocking specific services for specific computers in your home, to specific
network addresss, and so on.

[expert] Problem compiling kde2 programs

2001-02-03 Thread David Comeau

I originally sent this twice to the kde-devel mailing list and got nowhere
with them, so I'm trying my luck here instead.

Since installing fresh, linux-mandrake 7.2, which of course uses kde2, I
haven't been able to compile any kde program. When doing ./configure,
regardless of the kde2 program, I always get:

checking for kde headers installed... In file included from
/usr/include/kapp.h:45,
 from conftest.C:4:
/usr/include/kurl.h:24: qvaluelist.h: No such file or directory
configure: error: your system is not able to compile a small KDE application!
Check, if you installed the KDE header files correctly.

So, I exported QTDIR to point to /usr/lib/qt2, because that is the location
of qvaluelist.h. Now, I get the following when I do ./configure:

checking for kde headers installed... conftest.C: In function `int main()':
conftest.C:7: no method `KApplication::kde_htmldir'
conftest.C:8: no method `KApplication::kde_appsdir'
conftest.C:9: no method `KApplication::kde_icondir'
conftest.C:10: no method `KApplication::kde_sounddir'
conftest.C:11: no method `KApplication::kde_datadir'
conftest.C:12: no method `KApplication::kde_localedir'
conftest.C:13: no method `KApplication::kde_cgidir'
conftest.C:14: no method `KApplication::kde_configdir'
conftest.C:15: no method `KApplication::kde_mimedir'
conftest.C:16: no method `KApplication::kde_toolbardir'
conftest.C:17: no method `KApplication::kde_wallpaperdir'
conftest.C:18: no method `KApplication::kde_bindir'
conftest.C:19: no method `KApplication::kde_partsdir'
configure: error: your system is not able to compile a small KDE application!
Check, if you installed the KDE header files correctly.

Does anyone have a remedy for this. It is getting a little monotoneous. I
hate being dependant on the distribution to upgrade or compile my software.

I have a similar setup without sygate. My primary PC ins WinME with
att@home (I don't believe it would make any big difference for a modem
connection). I have two NIC's in the WinME box, but you only need one
if you're using a modem connection) on a Netgear hub. My second PC is
dual boot Win98-SE and linux (MD7.2 at present) with a Netgear FA310TX
NIC connected to the other PC. If you use ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing - the M$ version not the Mandrake version), it works just fine.
I have a printer on each PC, and I can get to either one from either
system, windows or linux.

Do a search on WIN98 and home networks or lan or ICS to get HOWTOs for
setting up the windows PCs. There are good instructions on the M$
knowledge base and several other users.

If you don't find anything right away, mail me off list, and I'll see
if I can find the instructions I used.

The problem is that i'm not sharing the inet connection from the linux box,
but from the windows box. The windows box uses a winmodem that i can't
install on the linux box. Is it possible from the windows box to share a
connection between linux and windows using sygate or not?

There may be logic errors or unneeded version checking in your version of RPM.
What I'm trying to say is that binarywise they are the same. I would say look
at a late model version of RPM 3.x. The unneeded version check may be gone.

[expert] Cooker HOWTO?

Is there a HOWTO on setting up a Cooker system? I've looked at the

I've got a couple of spare linux partitions on my hard drive, and I

Thank you. I had checked those settings before and assumed that replying to
the receiver (expert list) was like responding to all and would be quoted as
such. Instead it's like responding to sender. I just fixed the problem and
thanks for bringing it to my attention. I just didn't notice it because I

All of you who are already doing so, please ignore.

It would be really helpful if everyone who responds to posts on the
list would setup their mailer to indicate who is being quoted, rather
that the innocuous "on ... you wrote".

This is very easy to do in Kmail. Go to Settings - Configuration -
Composer and On Reply to Sender enter "on %D, %F wrote" or similar.
Kmail by default sets up '.on %D, you wrote".

I'm sure someone else can help you with Netscape mail or other mailers.

[expert] install cryptlib?

2001-02-03 Thread 914

hello everyone, i'll try to keep this short, and the good info up front.

i need to install cryptlib (
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/cryptlib/ ) on a linux machine

it's RedHat 6.2, but i'm hoping that won't matter too much to you guys :)

i've done makemake shared andmake testand all run just
fine, my problem is in referencing it from the *.c file, the compiler
complains that it can't find the cryptInit (or any other cryptlib
function), though i have done the requisit#include

i've also tried putting the cryptlib.h file in the same dir
and using #include "cryptlib.h"
same deal.

the best help i could find on the 'net for install of this is:
http://www.kelvin.free-online.co.uk/cryptlib_help_files/cryptlib.html
which helpfully says:
" Depending on your system
setup and privileges you may need to either copy the shared
library to /usr/lib
or set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to make sure the
shared
  library is used."

so, i've copied the .so to /usr/lib and run ldconfig, but this did not seem
to work either.
(also copied the .o and .a files to /usr/lib)

i fiddled with setting up the linkage manually as well, but no joy.

what i need to be able to is use the shared lib, and i'm fairly sure this
is a shared lib problem because of the reference to ld in the error from
the compiler:
" undefined reference to `cryptInit'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status"

any help is GREATLY appreciated!
thanks!

Yes, & I believe Mandrake 7.2 is the easiest one to do
it with. Once you have set up Mandrake to either use a
cable modem or dialup for internet connection, just
work through the internet connection sharing menu in
DrakeConf. Tell your Windows box to use DHCP to get
it's IP address & that's about it.

Id does all the ipchains config etc to manage the
routing, without your having to learn how do set
anything up manually. (Note, if you upgrade to kernel
2.4, this breaks coz it uses iptables, not ipchains,
otherwise, it works well, at least it did on this box)

I hope there is somebody who will try this one for me. I just deleted the
temp/kde-alluserswithoutworkingkcontrol/ksycoca files and logged out and in.
Kde rebuilt the ksycoca files (probably using kbuildsycoca) and now kcontrol
works for all users. I also deleted one user $HOME/.kde directory but I
don't think that had anything to do with the fix. I want to test it by
crashing kcontrol again but I'm having problems doing that. Maybe it's fixed
good this time or maybe it'll crash again.

But until then would someone with a broken kcontrol please try deleting the
temp/kde-alluserswithoutworkingkcontrol/ksycoca files and log out and in and
see if it fixes kcontrol?

3.0.3 - forget. I solved my rpm problems by going to the rpm ftp site,
finding my version (which was at 3.0.4 at the time) and incrementally
upgrading until I reached 3.0.5-27. If you decide to try this, don't
worry about using the intermediate RH rpm's along the way. I did a
manual rebuilddb with each. There may be 2 dependency issues along the
way - don't disregard them.

This route may be tedious but it's safe - rpm's not a proggy to
mishandle.

I have no clues for a remedy, but I experience the some of your problems. I
also have no sound, when I use a graphical login manager (I use KDM; I
haven't tried another graphical login manager yet). When I login with
runlevel 3 (full multi user mode) and then start X, then I I have sound again.

I have no problems with accessing my cdrom. I can mount, read and unmount my
cdrom as a normal user.

However I experience an other problem. I cannot browse the Internet with
Konqueror. Every time I go to a site Konqueror crashes.

Re: [expert] kcontrol STILL doesn't function - DONE/FIXED

2001-02-03 Thread Praedor Tempus

You have reinstalled kde2.1 on a clean install of 7.2? OK, try this:

Delete your .kderc, do an rm -rf on your $HOME/.kde directory, and then
delete everything in your $HOME/tmp AND as root delete everything in the
system /tmp directory.

Reboot (actually rebooting may be overkill but be radical). Login. At this
point you get the default kde session. Open kcontrol. It SHOULD be working
now. Go to the file associations menu. Go to html under text. Add
konqueror (when you select the add button, just type in "konqueror", do not
go down the list and select Konqueror Web Browser). Now select it in the
window and move it above Quanta. Select the Embedding tab at the top. On
this page the window will have "KHTML" in it. Select "Add" and then go down
the list you get and find "Konqueror". Select it. Move it above KHTML. Hit
"Apply".

Now your html links should work. This worked for me. Now links in kmail
actually open up in konqueror as they should and Quanta doesn't open up in
its stead.

Yann,
I beleive all you need to do is set the Linux machines gateway to the
addresss of the machine running Sygate, and make sure the DNS numbers in
the Linus machine point to your ISP's DNS addresses.
I'm using Mandrake 6.0, and that can all be done in netcfg(as root).

[expert] rpm-3.0 to rpm-4.0 catch 22

2001-02-03 Thread Richard -Gilligan- Uschold

I've been having problems installing rpm packages for several months, finally,
someone recognized the symptoms and told me the problem.  Now I need
to know how to fix it.
The original symptoms:
rpm gives this error message with some packages
"only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version
of RPM"
NOTE: this is not the usual dependency problem, the RPM program itself,
fails to open "Guppi-0.35.2-1.i586.rpm", even for query!
I've been told that this is because rpm-4.0 generated package files
that are incompatible with, and can't be read by rpm-3.0
Some other packages won't install because of these dependencies:
   rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix)  <= 4.0-1
   rpmlib(CompressedFileNames)  <= 3.0.4-1
First of all, searches for: "rpmlib", "PayloadFilesHavePrefix", "CompressedFileNames",
on rpmfind.net and www.linux-mandrake.com found nothing.
I did a search for string "PayloadFilesHavePrefix" and
"CompressedFileNames" on my machine from /usr, both were found in:
/usr/bin/rmp2cpio
/usr/lib/librpm.so.0
/usr/lib/librpm.so.0.0.0
/usr/lib/librpm.a
/usr/lib/librpm.so
So, I suspect that this dependency error message is WRONG, and "rpmlib"
should really be "librpm".
At the time, I had rpm-3.0.5-27mdk.i586.rpm, so I down graded to rpm-3.0.3-43mdk.i586.rpm
(from my Mandrake 7.0 install CDROM)
With this older than 3.0.4-1 version o rpm. I still get these same dependencies
messages:
   rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix)  <= 4.0-1
   rpmlib(CompressedFileNames)  <= 3.0.4-1
So, I also suspect that the "<= 4.0-1" and "<= 3.0.4-1" are incorrect
too, and should be ">=".
Of course, rpm-4.0-8mdk.rpm has these same dependencies:
   rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix)  <= 4.0-1
   rpmlib(CompressedFileNames)  <= 3.0.4-1
   glibc >= 2.1.92
So, it seems that rpm-4.0 has dependencies of itself!  But doesn't
recognize that it is itself because of error in the dependency list.
I downloaded glibc-2.2.1-3mdk.i586.rpm, but I can not install this because
the package was built with rpm-4.0, which I don't have.
One final gotcha:  There seems to be no way to determine what version
of rpm was used to build a particular package, without downloading it and
trying to install it.  I could download packages for months before
I find the right one! (and I have been, but I haven't found it yet!)
Questions:
1.  Is there a rpm package distributor that identifies which version
of rpm was used to build the packages?  Who?
2.  How is one supposed to upgrade from rpm-3.0 to rpm-4.0?
3.  It there a version of rpm-3.0.x that can read packages built
by rpm-4.0?

[expert] Internet connection sharing...

2001-02-03 Thread Yann Ouellet

Hi,
I'm wondering if i could do the following. I have 2 computer in a lan.
1
is in windows98 and has Sygate home network 4.0 installed. I use it to share
my internet connection between the 2 computer. Would it be possible, in
linux, to share the same connection with or without using sygate or in any
other way?

 Thanks!

Re: [expert] kcontrol STILL doesn't function - DONE/FIXED

2001-02-03 Thread Praedor Tempus

Thank you. The thing is, however, that I did do anything with menudrake.
Kcontrol was working with (I can't recall precisely) kde 2.1-20010115 but
upon upgrading to kde 2.1-20010118 and then again to 2.1-20010122, kcontrol
didn't work. The only thing changing was the version of kde 2.1.

Then, there is the fact of me deleting my .kderc and .kde/ so that when I
re-logged in, it would be as if for the first time, vis a vis, kde, so it
would install all the default settings as if for the first time.

I wasn't going from 2.0.1 to 2.1, for which I might really expect trouble,
but going from one 2.1 to the next. In truth, there were only two reasons I
was even upgrading: first, to see if any newer version had a functional
kword (still negative thus far), and then to see if kcontrol was going to
work.

Yesterday, with some spare time and as I mentioned previously, I went ahead
and totally removed kde from my system and then reinstalled it. I then
deleted my then current .kderc and .kde/ as well as everything in /tmp. I
then rebooted and kcontrol was working. I went home and that evening did the
same thing on my desktop. It worked initially, I even used kcontrol to
change settings back to what I wanted. I then closed kcontrol and a minute
or so later, reopened it just to check...it didn't work and was blank again.
I didn't even THINK about menudrake and I didn't mess with any directories in
the meantime. It was working one moment, the next, it's blank.

I deleted once again my .kderc, .kde/, and everthing in .tmp/ and /tmp then
rebooted. It was working again, and then I made my changes
again...lookandfeel, fixed the file association for html, mouse acceleration.
That's all. That is all I did the previous time too. Thus far, THIS time
kcontrol still is functioning but now I expect that at any moment without any
input or change on my part, I will open it up and find it blank again. I had
hoped that there was some config file rather than just a menu structure.
With a config file, I could make it immutable so that it never vanishes or
changes.

I`m trying to backup the running configuration of a Cisco router

and file, touched the file, edited the hosts.allow

I keep getting error messages from the

Error code 1-- file not found, or Error Code 2-- Access violation.
Anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong or leaving undone?

One of the problems Windoze users have is their registry gets
bloated with extraneous, often conflicting keys and values. So using
it to get config info would prob'ly result in disaster. I dual boot,
always have. I was also an early M$ beta testor for W95 and also W98.
The best way to keep the registry clean and optimized is to not load
the GUI on boot, but stop at a pure DOS prompt, no windoze files
active. DOS 7.x tools, 'scandisk', then 'scanreg /fix' followed by
'scanreg /opt' keeps the registry, when done on a regular basis, in
good order. BUT 99.99% of Windoze users would never bother doin that,
and the Windoze registry tools are ineffective for cleaning and
optimizing. Also, while WinME is still run on top of DOS, it most
likely would present a whole 'nother bunch of problems. I don't really
know, I still use W98 rc1.

[expert] Virus scanning via postfix

2001-02-03 Thread Bill Kenworthy

Hi, has anyone been able to get the Mandrake configured postix in 7.2 to
virus scan. In particular I am looking at using anomy, then eventally
using that to call AVP. I had go at this some months ago and failed, so
now I am looking for some hints as to the best way to go about this.
Searching the postfix site/anomy/web hasnt helped much. The stup
basicly collects mail from one ISP for one user. All other members of
the family then access this via imap/netscape which does the actual
filtering into appropriate mailboxes.

RE: [expert] Problem starting Apache

I would like to run SSL from within Apache. As for the auth through squid, I
heard there is an rpm that allows SAMBA to run as a PDC and squid will pass
the encrypted password through. Do you know how to achieve this? I am
currently running squid as a transparent proxy and ipchains catches all tcp
packets and sends them to the squid port.

Cheat. Use the ncurses 'ntsysv' tool. Actually, I think there's a X

SAMBA-based NT passwords?

I'm glad to hear that everything is working for you. Yes, you could use
the Mandrake Update for future upgrades but it will be light years
before Mandrake catches up with you. LOL. Honestly, I have mentally
monitored Mandrake's patterns as far as upgrades go. I noticed that
Mandrake reputation isn't just in the ease of use of their distribution,
but in the stability and security of their product. That is why you will
always see a (RH) rpm way before mandrake releases a (mdk) rpm. But if
you watch securityfocus.com, freezer-burn.com, linuxsecurity.com, and
many others you will see most of the other distros painting the "box"
with postings of exploits, breaches, and vulnerabilities of their
respective packages. I personally discovered that it is easier to make a
package than it is to debug to work acrosss myriad platforms and
software promegations. If Mandrake ever catches up with you (This is not
counting the development and cooker branches, mind you!), it is more
than ok to download their packages.

2001-02-03 Thread Zeljko Vukman

Maybe I had to explain to you in details what is going on when you
change your Mandrake menus with
menudrake (read: application links). X-KDE-BaseGroup is nothing but a
KDE directory in your application links.
In Mandrake menu this directory is subdirectory of Configuration
directory. That's why I told you that you have
messed up with your application links. If you do not believe go to
/.kde/share/ and move applnk directory somewhere
else, then restart your kde session and take a look at Kcontrol. All
entries are missing ;). Or you can do that using
menudrake and remove KDE subdirectory from Configuration directory in
your KDE menu. The result will be the same:
empty Kcontrol. People are just not aware that using menudrake can be
very "dangerous" and give you a headache.

I bet that all of you who have empty Kcontrol have used menudrake and
moved or deleted KDE dir in Configuration
menu dir. And then installed kde 2.1beta1 or beta2. The whole problem is
because KDE has its own structure of menus
and Mandrake has another. And when you install KDE's RPM's installation
can not find default Mandrake menu structure
and do not puts KDE dir with links to Configuration menu dir.

I too have had the same frustrations as you have. I have been off line for 2
days trying to reinstall to get it working. Reinstalling kde didn't do
it(probably didn't remove some files?). I upgraded to beta2 following Chris'
instructions on a clean 7.2 install. Kcontrol worked but files weren't
opening properly. Trying to fix this by editing
/usr/share/applnk.kde/.hidden/konqfilemgr.desktop to include inode/directory
and inode/block device worked to open files which worked. Url links still
wouldn't work when I removed quanta. Basically I have had all the hassles
you've had. Kcontrol crashed again and so I did another 7.2 and kde beta2
install. Now I try not to mess directly with the config and hidden files
that run the kde menus and kcontrol etc. but try to find the way to use the
software built in kde to edit them. So far I haven't hosed anything yet.
Just in case you want to know like I did where that X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings
is I looked in the hidden directories and did :
[root@localhost .menu]# rgrep -r X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings *
kdebasedir:#?package(kdebase): needs="kde" section="Configuration/"
title="KDE" kde_opt="X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings"
Note that's one line that starts with #?pac ... and ends with ...=settings"
Again, I don't want to mess directly with the files any more but if I
inadvertently screw things up I'd consider adding that line to
/root/.menu/kdebasedir . Hope it goes well with your new install. :-)
