[expert] RealPlayer-7 NOT working in Mozilla .8

2001-02-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Any idea why RealPlayer-7 rpm might not be working in Mozilla .8? It
worked before, but now it doesn't. Here are my Mozilla .8 plugins:

[sher@sher sher]$ cd mozilla/plugins
[sher@sher plugins]$ ls
ShockwaveFlash.class* libflashplayer.so* nppdf.so* raclass.zip
cpPack1.jar* libjavaplugin_oji.so@ nsdejavu.so* rpnp.so*
java2/ libnullplugin.so* plugger.so*
[sher@sher plugins]$

Works fine in Netscape 4.76 and I did configure the Realplayer embedded
mime files under Help. What am I doing wrong, please?

Thank you so much.

[expert] getpeername

2001-02-26 Thread Uri . Shenderovich

Hi all,
I've recently installed Mandrake 7.2 and I have a problem : it's not
possible to launch any server ( ftp, telnet, rsh, etc.)
All of them return similar error : 'getpeername: operation performed on
non-socket' .
Does it mean I have to upgrade glibc ?

Thanks,

Hi all,

If I run linuxconf in console mode over ssh,, it works fine,,

however, how do I get to the accept, dismiss and help buttons at the bottom
of it??

I can wander around and change settings, but I can select accept/dismiss to
activate any changes I made..

any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you Pedro!

I found the iso but apparently www.tuxfind.com doesn't exist! A whois and nslookup
claim that
tuxfind.com is not a registered host/domain! I'll try again later.

Anyway, thanks :-)

I really don't know, but have you tried using a different NIC? Perhaps your card is
physically
damaged or somehow defunct. You might try another network card.

But like i said, i don't really know. It appears that some of your packets are
corrupt, or the

SA> Thanks in advance.

I know two distros that runs off from CD. One is "Finnix" and the
other, more sofisticated that even run X is "SuSe Live"

With "Finnix" you can learn how the manage to run from CD and try to
adapt it to your needs.

Basically they boot the CD with a kernel image and then create 4
ramdisks, where they mount the CD itself and the images of /home,
/etc, /var. In short, they boot the CD, put configuration files in
ramdisks and the rest is on the CD.

The problem is that every boot, you loose everything.

SuSe Live saves your changes to your hd, so it can "remember" your
config files if you run it from your computer.

SuSe Live, as it run X by default, it is extremly slow.I did't try to
change that, but may be possible.

This isn't a very good idea... the mail turn around is going to be
slow for a non-24/7 server. And mail might bounce and so forth... you
really should get a dedicated mail server if you want to run a mailing
list.

If you like, I can setup a mailing list here (something like
[EMAIL PROTECTED]), but I don't understand the
need... is newbie|cooker|expert not enough?

I'd be more than happy to host a mailing list on my server (which is
available 24/7), if you think there is a real need or desire.

Yes. Take a look at my web page:

http://members.optushome.com.au/ronst/

for two of them. Preferred is troels.rsync3.pl, which is in beta.

Either will download only English components (so saving you 528MB for
cooker) and will rename local RPMs so that rsync uses its very fast
patch-in-place algorithm.

As supplied troels.rsync3.pl will download Mandrake contrib, cooker,
7.2, unsupported, updates, and 7.2 isos. However, you must alter it
to configure what you want to download, from where, and to where
locally. You must have the local top-level directory structures
already set up to match.

Pedro,

I think you are missing the point here...

The point is that the original poster's laptop does NOT have a floppy drive;
only a CD which he can't boot from (the reverse situation). That was also my
case when I first wanted to install Linux on my Tecra.

The original question remains... *how* can you get to the "when asked from
where" stage *without* having a floppy _drive_ to insert that wonderful little
diskette into..?

_That's_ the problem which is being asked here.

Not in this case; but you're scused. :^)

Re: [expert] X 4.0.2

2001-02-26 Thread Neal Lippman

Thanks to those who have offerred help on X4.0.2.

I am unable to locate "unsupported" rpms, partly because www.mandrakeuser.org
seems to be down for the past few days.

Clearly the 4.0.2 rpms ARE installed on my system, though, and I was able to
locate an old printout of instructions for rearranging the symlinks to point
to 4.0.2 and also to remove the GL libraries that the nvidia drivesr cannot
handle.

My question now: Has anyone tried compiling the X4.0.2 sources available at
XFree.org directly under LM 7.2? I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to just do
that than to use the rpms...although the cooker RPMS that I have installed
are (hopefully) able to work if I just move around the symlinks...I suppose
the worst that could happen is that I cannot use X and have to go back to
3.3.6 for a while.

Hey my friend, before you go crazy check this:

ftp://ftp.linux.com/mounts/u1/mirrors/iso/

I also suggest to do a www.tuxfind.com search and check the .src.rpm /
i386.rpm /.noarch.rpm and other rpm buttons and uncheck the others.
and try mandrake-release-7.1. May you have luck.

Use lftp. I works fine for mirroring (timestamping, size comparison, mirror
over ftp or http and ssl versions, and deletes local files not present in
remote source).

Ok, older Toshiba are like other laptops, and as I said in an earlier
message, I have among other laptops one Compaq Armada 1640T which does not
have a cdrom but only a floppy. So I followed this approach:

1.- Build a boot diskette with pcmcia image from another Linux computer, but
can be done from DoS or WindowsXX.

In my network just one computer have a cdrom, so I mounted a first Mandrake
cd on it.

2.- Attached a pcmcia card with a net conection in the laptop

3.- Powered up the laptop and when asked from where it would be installed,
the answer is ftp, then the program ask for the ip, ftp account ecc.

4.- The rest of the installation is the same as from Cdrom

All this worked very fine with all the pcs without cdrom on my net and I
remember now to do even a succesfull NFS installation too.

Hope this help with the installation and scuse my poor english.

[expert] Mozilla .8 java applet off-center mystery

2001-02-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have recently installed Java for Mozilla .8. Thanks to the
instructions at Bugzilla, I found a workaround for the "java
successfully installed but does not work" problem plaguing Mozilla .8
and Java. I have shared this solution with our mailing list in a
previous letter.

I tested the Java applets and Java seems to work fine. I tested it at
the "Hello World" site and the "Telnet applet" site and Mozilla .8 java
works fine.

However, I have come across one site that really baffles me, and I would
appreciate it if you could look at it and see if you get the same
results. First, make sure that your Mozilla .8 Java really works. Then
please try the following URL:

http://www.rollins.edu/Foreign_Lang/Russian/ruspaint.html

Please try any of the java applets on the site by clicking on the frame
at left. For example, ICONS or 18th century. Etc.

You will immediately see the Java applet loading, then a series of
images unfolding in succession. A gorgeous and beautifully designed java
applet. Only one problem:In Mozilla .8 the Java applet is NOT centered.
Instead, it appears at the extreme left of the frame body, while in
every other browser it appears CENTERED as it should be. If you look at
View, Page Source, you will see that the HTML clearly indicated and
correctly indicated that this applet should be centered. And it appears
correctly centered in Netscape 4.76 for Linux, in Konqueror (even though
the applet doesn't seem to work as yet in KDE 2.0), in Netscape 4.76 for
Windows, in Opera 5 for Windows and in Internet Explorer.

So, I am baffled by this strange problem.

I would very much appreciate your comments.

I will also send this message to the Bugzilla team.

Thank you.

Benjamin

Re: [expert] Ethernet LAN not working

2001-02-26 Thread John Wolford

Take a look at the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and see if there's
anything that
doesn't look right.
Try to bring it up:
# ifup eth0 #this won't work if the above file is not set up properly.
# ifconfig#this is to see what's "up"
Is your eth0 up? If it is, and it has the ip address and netmask that you want, then
you can try
some pinging tests for connectivity:
# ping
# ping
If you can ping either from your box to Windows box or the other way around, then you
have
connectivity. Getting them to "talk" to one-another might involve Samba, depending on
what you
want them to talk about.

Be sure to check the man page for ifconfig.

As for your ppp device, i haven't used one in a while so i'm not sure. There should be
an
ifcfg-ppp0 file in the same place as the ifcfg-eth0 file.

I hate to say it but in the past i've fiddled and fiddled and for some funny reason
rebooting
sometimes seemed to help. I've also had instances where i've had to type
# ifconfig eth0 -netmask 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
twice in order to get it to work (the first time produced an error message, the second
time
worked). I dunno.

Hope that helps a bit,
j

[expert] USB Zip improper bootup -- Solved!

2001-02-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Thanks to "Gh" I have solved the improper bootup due to my new USB Zip
drive.

BEGIN

To get your USB Zip working use at your own risk:

As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/usb file
Set storage and usb variables to yes.
Reboot. You should see at the boot screen:
USB interface
USB storage
USB file-system

As root, in console md mnt/zip
Add to fstab
/mnt/zip /mnt/zip supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/sda4 0 0
Reboot. Your should be able to use your USB zip now

If the USB interface is not activating at boot time:
As root add to /etc/modules
usb-interface

END

In addition, I have added the following items at the end of /etc/rc.local:

insmod usbcore
insmod usb-uhci
insmod usb-storage
[sher@sher sher]$

And, of course, I add the following entry to /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab:

/mnt/zip /mnt/zip supermount fs=ext2,dev=/dev/sda 0 0

(Ploease note that for device I indicated "sda" rather than "sda4"
because in my case "sda4" causes an Input/Output error.

One last thing:

Gh is looking for someone to send him, for a reasonable annual fee, LM
updates. I personally do not have a CD-writable machine so I can't do
it. However, I am taking the liberty of asking other list members to
consider helpling him.

Keep me posted

I like to keep my mandrake box updated but I lack the bandwidth any
suggestions? I am willing to pay a reasonable annual fee for a monthly
CD delivery with all the update files for LM7.2.

Gh's email address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you all so much.

Re: [expert] Two LINUX OS on same computer

2001-02-26 Thread John Wolford

I tried a similar thing and i wasn't successful until i PHYSICALLY disconnected ALL
drives that
have ANY version of Linux on them. You will have to compensate for the change in
hardware (hda,
hdb, etc) - you can either put a dummy drive in to be hda, for example, to mimmic what
the setup
will be when you reconnect your original drive; or you can install on the new drive
and then
reconnect hda and mount your new drive and go and change fstab to reflect the change
in the
drive's position.

Does that make any sense? I'll try another way just quickly: You have 2 drives, HD1
and HD2, where
HD2 is your new drive. Right now, HD1 is hda and has LM6.1.

Here's the 2nd scenario i mentioned:
1. Disconnect HD1 completely, and connect HD2 to be your primary master.
2. Install your Mandrake 7.2. It will install and think of itself as hda.
3. Disconnect HD2 and reconnect HD1 in its original position (now it is hda again).
4. Connect HD2. It will be viewed by your Redhat system as hdx (x might be b,c,d etc
but not a).
5. Fire up your Redhat and mount your new drive. Let's say it's hdb and you mount it at
/mnt/newdrive
6. Edit /mnt/newdrive/etc/fstab and replace all instances of hda with hdb.
7. Edit your lilo/grub/bootloader to reflect the new drive & operating system (see
lilo-HOWTO
etc).
8. Have i forgotten anything?

The fist scenario would be the easiest. Just make sure you don't have any other
version of Linux
(i tried with two versions of Mandrake but having Redhat probably wouldn't help much)
installed on
any drive that is connected to your system, otherwise it won't like it one bit. It
MIGHT like it
if you were to share the swap partition, this is the one thing i never tried, but if
you don't
share it, it won't like it.

I hope that's helpful...

An absolute minimum of "ifconfig" output would help. While you're at it, from
"route" too... and a clue as to the IP address used in the other OS...

Of course, if ifconfig gives no eth0 output, try "ifconfig eth0" to be sure.

The reason xntpd was no longer active is probably in /var/log/syslog (this is
from one of mine today):
Feb 26 13:04:02 homer xntpd[14073]: time error 1007.151614 is way too large (set

Recently I installed an 3COM 3C905C Ethernet card in my computer. Using a

the same NIC.

I went into linuxconf and entered a unique IP address for eth0.

Problem is it refuses to talk to the other machine. I can find no evidence
of network activity and worse my ppp0 interface is now NOT working either
(it did prior to this modification).

This should be simple. Could someone please help me diagnose this problem?

I fully understand... I finally broke down and ordered a floppy; BUT Toshiba

Without using the DOS trick again, not sure what to suggest.

However, this fits with something I've been contemplating now that I have DSL
and can consider participating in Cooker activities...

My "Hate List" is ordered this way:
- M$
- rebooting
- down while installing/upgrading

So... anyone know of any catch-22 which would prevent installations/upgrades
being done to separate / & /usr partitions while the system is live? The idea
is to install a new version in background, get all the system parameters from
the running system; then rebooting for a minimum of downtime...

The next challenge would be to switch to the new version on-the-fly; but I
believe that is already being worked on IIRC.

for some reason,, my mail, when generated from perl scripts, is being sent

2 questions I have regarding this..

1. why is it coming up with apache instead of the username? (it always
worked before, so it must be the new 7.2 install.(I have upgraded sendmail

secondly, why is it attaching the server name to the email address, it
should just be [EMAIL PROTECTED]

can anyone make any suggestions on how to rectify this?

I'm currently using wget to mirror the Mandrake cooker ftp, but I was
wondering...

Wget has a lot of functions of a mirroring program, eg time-stamping and
stuff, however, what it DOESN'T seem to do, is delete a local file that no
longer exists on the mirrored ftp server, is there a way of telling it to do
this? Or should I use one of the other mirroring tools... like mirror? :-)

Does anyone have an already-set-up mirror config file for the cooker?

Re: [expert] Two LINUX OS on same computer

2001-02-26 Thread Ron Heron

Hello,

I have done it, and it is quite neat, but can be a little tricky.

Basically, you have /boot partitions for each install (among others). In
your case, Mandrake Install should do this for you, but if it does not,
just follow the following steps:

1) Once the install on hdb (7.2) is complete, you will boot into the new
installation.
2) Find the /boot partition in your hda (could be hda11, for example -
probably find this beforehand to save time)
3) Create a temp directory to mount to (#mkdir /mnt/boot61)
4) Mount the directory (mount -t ext2 /dev/hda11 /mnt/boot61, and make
sure that vmlinuz can be fount.
5) Edit lilo.conf to add a 6.1 entry, and point linux.conf to the
/mnt/boot61 directory.

example:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=current
keytable=/boot/us.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=50
append="mem=256M"
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz-smp
label=Mandrake-7.2
root=/dev/hdb11
vga=788
read-only
image=/mnt/boot61/vmlinuz
label=Mandrake-6.1
root=/dev/hda11
vga=788
read-only

6) run lilo (#lilo)
7) reboot and test

Now, this is only from memory, and I edited the file above to somewhat
reflect your question. Obviously, double-check the partions for your
installation. If when you run lilo, you get any error messages at all,
please let me know what they are. Also, as long as you leave the rest of
lilo.conf intact, and only ADD entries, you won't hose up your system
terribly.

The other thing you can do, is make a boot floppy of your 6.1 before you
do the install.

Good Luck,
Ron

[expert] Isntall Mdk 7.2 on Vmware V-machine

Has anyone successfully put LM 7.2 on a VMware Virtual Machine?

I got up to the Partition Drive Screen, but after taht it complains that
the base install package is not there (doing ftp install from local
machine running the VM).

Does anyone have a pre-built Virtual Machine File (Here's where Mandrake
steps in and offers one on their web page, __hint hint__)

I am trying the ISO's today.

Just an FYI, the reason I'm using a Virtual Machine is because I'm at
work and can't use dual-boot, so the only way to get all the linux
utilities and power-desktop stuff is a VM, and the SUSE-linux one is not
what I'm used too (Plus I want to try KDE 2).

Again, anyone with a VMWARE file I can just FTP???

Anyone at Mandrake want to Build one and offer it on there site?

[expert] Samba share question

2001-02-26 Thread Wayne Stout

Greetings, every one.

Here's a puzzler for you.

At my office, we have a linux file server with Samba 2.0.7. Security is
set to server, although I've tried domain and user as well. Any pc that
logs on and is a member of the NT4 domain can see the shares that they
are supposed to be able to see with no problem.

We have several pc's that are not part of the domain. If these machines
happen to be running NT, everything is fine once I set the user account
to "No Password". Here's the really weird part.

Win95 machines that are not in the domain are having problems. If I log
on to a 95 machine as myself, I can see the files in my personal share,
and all the restricted shares that I have access to. But, I cannot see
any files in the public share! I can see folders, but there are no files
appearing in them.

I've tried a ton of different permutations of the /etc/smb.conf file.
Nothing seems to change these results.

Here's what my current smb.conf shares part looks like:

# Share Definitions

Re: [expert] failed dependencies for cups

2001-02-26 Thread John Wolford

I looks as though you have a file which one of your cups packages wants to
overwrite(?). You can
check this with
# rpm -qpl
and see if it's wanting to install a file you already have installed.

It also looks like you might already have cups-1.1.4-3mdk package installed. Check
this with
# rpm -q cups
If you do, you might want to try to upgrade it with
# rpm -Uvh

Another thing i notice is that with that wildcard expansion, you're not installing
either the
libcups or libcups-devel package.

You can get all good packages from the numerous mirror sites linked off of
mandrake.com.
Immediately look for updates also.

I hope this helps.

Let say that right now is 12:00 M and it is Feb 26 2000

as root and using date you must do:

# date 022612002001

next we will transfer the time to the CMOS clock, so:

if your machine is UNIX only

# hwclock --utc --systohc

If your machine is dual boot

# hwclock --systohc

Try going into your bios and checking what the time is there. If it is not correct,
correct it.
Probably your operating system is setting its clock by the hardware clock (bios).

If you don't know how to do that, just ask again :-)

[expert] Two LINUX OS on same computer

2001-02-26 Thread pineault

Hi:

I have LM6.1 on my first hard drive (hda) and
recently got a new drive (hdb) and LM7.2.
I would like to install LM7.2 on the second
hard drive, while keeping LM6.1 on the first
drive at least until I have the new system
running OK. Is this possible and, if so, what
are the tricky points? I use LILO as loader.

I would particularly appreciate hearing from those
who have successfully done it, but any help will
be appreciated.

Thanks,

I may be misunderstanding what an FTP install involves, but isn't it booting
from a floppy and then installing all the packages via FTP? That's the
opposite of what I need.. it's the booting I have a problem with, but if I
can get the install "kicked off", installing the actual packages from the
CD-ROM is no problem..

I couldn't find any mention of FTP install in the documentation on
www.mandrake.com though, so if I'm totally off the track, let me know! :-)

This is probably a fight between the BIOS clock and the Linux software
clock - each is trying to compensate for the other. You have to disable BIOS
offsets for daylight saving and different timezones and let Linux do it (or
the other way around)

[expert] Can Pam hose Grub?

2001-02-26 Thread Bill Piety

I've been a Gnome user for some time (Mandrake 7.1 with original kernel,
x 3.3.6) so decided to take a look at the new KDE 2.0.1-stable. In order
to install the rpm's with no dependency issues I had to upgrade pam,
install arts, etc. Since there were significant changes I decided to
(aagghh) reboot.

Now I don't even get to a grub boot menu - endless stage1 strings -
strung together. Am I correct in thinking that pam could be the culprit?
I can't imagine any kde libs or arts doing something like this to grub.

On the Gnome side, I've been running Ximian, Evo & Nautilus - and that's
basically all of the 'cutting edge' testing I'm doing at this time, tho
most of my libs have been upgraded to 7.2 stable - no cooker, I'm still
with glibc_2.1.

Since I've got a dual boot with Win98, I hosed the mbr & booted to Win
for now. Does any of this rambling give a clue to anyone as to what's
going on?

Let say that right now is 12:00 M and it is Feb 26 2000

as root and using date you must do:

# date 022612002001

next we will transfer the time to the CMOS clock, so:

if your machine is UNIX only

# hwclock --utc --systohc

If your machine is dual boot

# hwclock --systohc

[expert] Font/QT problem

Just installed 7.2 (clean from dl iso's). Configured X in xinerama. I

Any suggestions?

[expert] Installing Mandrake without a boot floppy or bootable CD

2001-02-26 Thread Carson, David

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to do something which seems simple, but is
perhaps deceptively difficult. Let me explain:

I have an elderly laptop upon which I have installed Red Hat 6.0. This was
an interesting procedure because (a) the laptop has no floppy drive, and (b)
it can't boot from a CD-ROM. Which is tricky, given that just about every
installation method relies on a bootable CD-ROM or a boot floppy. How
exactly I got it working is described at
http://www.ar.com.au/~storm/toshsat200cds.html but basically it involved
copying the entire Red Hat CD onto the hard drive, rebooting into DOS (it
had Win95 installed on it when I obtained it) and using their autoboot.bat
utility.

OK, that worked fine. But now, I would like to upgrade it to Mandrake 7.2.

Same problem - can't boot from CD-ROM, can't boot from a floppy. But I also
can't find any pointer to how to kick off the installation from a working
Linux system, as I was able to kick off the Red Hat install from a working
DOS system.

My guess is that maybe if I added a Lilo entry to boot from the hard drive
as usual, using the kernel on the hard drive, but with the CD-ROM as the
root disk? Would this launch the installation as if it had been booted from
the CD? I suppose I probably should experiment a bit before pestering this
mailing list, but I'm at work, the laptop is at home, and I figured I'd ask
now and see if anyone could save me messing around..

Cheers!
David...

[expert] Improper login -- can you help?

2001-02-26 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have a very minor but annoying configuration problem occasioned by the
installation of my new USB 100 meg zip drive. I have configured it
correctly, and it works perfectly well using supermount. I had
previously installed a Netgear 4 port 10/100 hub. I had no problem with
the login until I installed the new zip drive.

The problem is simply that when booting into Linux, I cannot
automatically get to a login screen. Instead, I get information about my
zip drive and hub and then the boot process just stops (hangs). That is,
I then need to type Cnt + C, which takes me to a login screen. No big
deal, but I am just curious what could be causing this.

Here is the data:

Actually Mandrakesoft compiles almost everything using the i686 flag. This
way everything is optimized for 686 processors. Correct me if I am wrong

My take on this is that the kernel in the distribution includes compiled in
support for i-386, however should Joergen want to just have an i-386 kernel
he can recompile then from the sources?

[expert] Making a Bootdisk with a CD

2001-02-26 Thread Sean Armstrong

I was wondering whether it was possible or not to make a CD backup of my
drive and then use that CD as a bootdisk? Like having a portable drive. All
of the main things would be located on the cdrom and all of the unnecessary
stuff would still be on the hard drive. I guess it would be basically all of
the base fs would be located on the cdrom like tom's rtbt floppy. Except my
whole system would be run of the cdrom. Any ideas? Just curious.
Thanks in advance.
