The ABIT M/B most likely uses the 686B South Bridge chip, and I could never get Mandrake to work unless the kernal version was at least 2.4.7 or above. [expert] Bad Blocks on Ext2 fs
Couple of days back I started hearing funny noises from my HD. Sometimes LM 8 stops and drops me to the prompt advising me run fsck manually. I am not sure if any precious data exists on the bad blocks. Hop do I mark the bad blocks so that it will not be used by the file system. I tried to boot from my LM 8 CD into rescue mode and ran fsck.ext2, now I am not sure what options to supply to mark/repair the bad blocks, Any advise Right now most of the time my system boots properly, but sometimes dosen't boot. Abiword is probably mucking with your Netscape fonts. If you don't use Abiword, find the abisuite-xx.rpm in the package manager, and remove it. Your netscape will now have great fonts. [expert] Possible IDE disk problem?
I just finished installing Mandrake 8.0 a new WD 200bb Caviar drive. After rebooting the first time, the console came up with this error message: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady Seek Complete Error} hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } The drive is brand new, but the motherboard has been used for a couple of months (it's an ABit KT7-RAID with the Via KT133 chipset). With the previous harddrive (also a WD Caviar) I occasionally got this message, but the machine never gave me any problems. Now that I'm turning it into a webserver I'm a little concerned. Is this something is likely to go away with a kernel upgrade (I'm using the stock 2.4.3-20 kernel, but plan to upgrade it to the latest soon), or by upgrading the BIOS, changing BIOS settings, or is it a potentially dangerous hardware error? If necessary, an ext3 system can be mounted as ext2 (especially by other OS's that lack reiserfs support but have ext2 support), like if you use a non-Mandrake rescue disk or boot disk without ext3 support. 3. File and directory undeletion and recovery is possible with ext3 (as in ext2), but that is impossible with reiserfs at present. I find #2 and # 3 compelling reason to use it over reiserfs. For all the reasons different operating systems exist, so exists reasons for using each. It's a matter of rational choice. One needs look at ones requirements, then pick the proper OS. Because this is a Beta not everything works as it should so it has been necessary for me to do the 1 finger shutdown on a couple of occasions. The Ext3 had no problem handling it and there was no waiting for fsck to complete as with ext2. Overall I am pleased with the performance of Ext3 and plan to continue using it. Re: [expert] How can I improve the fonts on Konqueror
I changed the fixed width font in look&feel to dec-terminal and now it's much better. I do have a question about Netscape and fonts, I cannot find a .Xdefaults file in my home (Gary) directory, there's one in /root but it doesn't seem to apply when I login as a Gary. I would like to fix the fonts on Netscape as suggested in the HOWTOS fonts netscape. Re: [expert] Reiser FS or ext3?
Try xfs. I've been using reiserfs on all partitions for more than half a year, mostly because of journaling. I have 600Mhz PIII with 128Mb RAM and the system always seemed rather sluggish to me. I blamed it on kde, but when I I tried xfs, everything started to fly, the wait times decreased almost 30% (I measured with kernel build: user and system times practically the same both under reiser and xfs, but elapsed time with xfs about 30% less. Yes, the test in both cases was on the newly created fs in the same partition). What's more important, the system started to be more responsive. Konqueror and kmail for example took at least 10 seconds to come up, now it's 4 or 5. The only drawback, the fs with a lot of small files take much more space, my /usr is more than 100Mb bigger than with reiser (total size is 1Gb). XFS -- We are throwing everything at it now We have had really SUPER cooperation from SGI. So far, it has endured more punishment than any of the others without complaint. We are hammering it because it was included late (not even in beta 3). ext3 -- Backwards compatible/convertible with ext2 and the journal for / now plays back on boot. Solid, and does not interfere with nfs, but slower than everything else except JFS and also higher initial overhead. Reiser -- Fastest in our benchmarks. Stability problems exist with that default mount even yet, so we are defaulting to -notail mounts which are the only ones suitable fro mounting / or /boot. Nfs is what crashes, though. High speed large transfers across nfs no longer corrupt Reiser. even better, it should display the kernel, and if it is ticked, it should download the RPM and popup a message with instructions on what to do,, (ie not install it... just save it somewhere like /var/cache/grpmi) The kernel needs to show up there because many would not know to install the new kernel for security reasons if it didn't show up. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Praedor Sent: Monday, 10 September 2001 9:58 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Problem with kernel upgrade Couldn't MandrakeUpdate simply be modified to NOT display kernels? [expert] Partition table modification at boot, ML 8.0
Hello, I'm having a very anoying problem since I've upgraded Linux Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0 on two computers. The first computer has a hard disk of aprox. 5 GB, four primary partitions: the first two are NTFS, the third is the Linux system partition, and another Linux swap partition The active partition is the linux one which contains lilo. After upgrading from Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0 I noticed that NT doesn't see the second partition. The reason is that a linux component (probably lilo) had changed the partition type into 17 (hidden HPFS/NTFS). I tried to change it back to 7 (NTFS) but when I've booted NT, the partition it's again hidden. On the second box, HDD 20GB, the mandrake 8.0 upgrade modified the partition table worst than on the first one. The fdisk -V /dev/hda reports an amount of sectors unallocated. The cfdisk sees two segments of free space on the disk. I forget to mention that I didn't modified the partition table during the upgrade, on neither computer. Did someone had this problem already ? From further reading, I found out about that. So I'm trying to get autofs working, and it's not. My /etc/auto.master file has this in it: /mnt/cdrom /etc/auto.cdrom and my /etc/auto.cdrom file has this: cdrom -fstype=iso9660,ro :/dev/cdrom I've even tried using: cd -fstype=iso9660,ro :/dev/hdc to exactly match what's in the example in the man page(s). I started it up, and got no error messages, but trying to access /mnt/cdrom just give me empty directory listing (for the directory where the mount is *supposed* to go), but not what's on the CD. Again, this would be an EXCELLENT idea. With all the problems that are caused by someone doing a kernel upgrade in MandrakeUpdate (and it's NOT unreasonable for someone who hasn't heard about the problem to think that if it's listed there, it must be upgradable from there - after all, that's what MandrakeUpdate is there for...), they *really* should just configure MandrakeUpdate to not do a kernel. Does anyone from Mandrake read this list? :-) --Dave -- David Guntner GEnie: Just say NO! http://www.akaMail.com/pgpkey/davidg or key server for PGP Public key Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] /var/run permissions
Hi, Still running some LM7.2 systems and have had some occasions where X would not start. LM7.2 comes with XFree86 v3.3.6 and v4.0.1; but shortly after installing 7.2, XFree86 v4.0.3 came out and I installed that manually... 4.0.3 changed the ownership of xfs to xfs.xfs... however, xfs tries to write xfs.pid into /var/run which is impossible with: drwxr-xr-x5 root root 4096 Sep 10 10:48 /var/run/ ^ ^ So, I changed /var/run to: drwxrwxrwx5 root root 4096 Sep 10 10:48 /var/run/ since I could not get an answer at the time. On occasion, the permissions of /var/run would get magically changed back to 755 causing X to fail to start because there was no xfs server, in turn because xfs could not write its PID file to /var/run... Finally tracked this down to linuxconf which returns the /var/run permissions to 755: > # netconf --status > List of things required to activate current configuration > Changing permissions of file /var/run from 40777 to 40755 So gotta ask again... does anyone know the correct way to fix this...? Either /var/run needs to allow non-root processes, linuxconf should butt out, or xfs needs to write xfs.pid elsewhere...? Other...? Thanks, Pierre Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? changing the httpd user to root is a BAD Idea, it wo0uld give super-user privlidges to processes run as a remote web server connected to your box. don't do it. veery bad luck, much less opening your wallet to every script kiddie in the internet. This is a violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act which seems to fly in the face of many court decisions regarding fair use of copyrighted material. The DMCA would most likely be used to fine or imprison anyone who broke the encryption scheme (to protect copyrighted material) to allow a conversion, so if Microsoft doesn't do it, no one else legally can do it either. The same applies to the rather mediocre quality movies known as .asf files, but in that case Microsoft has patented them despite the prior art of mpeg. Also you can get some documentation in a roundabout way from downloading rpmlint and reading that python source. It is wonderful for examples of use of rpm-python. It would be nice if someone who uses python and who has time writes something, but it hasn't happened yet, so we are stuck with reading the C source of the modules.
