When I set ICS on, I lost access to my DSL connection. It's not that big a tragedy. In
theory, I should stop the DSL connection anyway when logged into work- it's safer that
way.

I'll try this later. If this all works, I'll have automate switching the addresses
back and forth somehow. I currently use hardcoded IP addresses in 'hosts' on both
boxes. I may need to turn on DHCP. OR I may need to add extra routes dynamically.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling. Thanks for the start.

Matthew,

Just switch on Internet Connection Sharing on the XP box. It will need
the IP address set at 192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 for that to
work. Then on your LM box run the Control Center > Network and Internet
> Connection wizard. Set your IP to say 192.168.0.2 (same subnet) and
set the gateway to 192.168.0.1

You can enter the address of the primary DNS server at this point as
well. If there are more DNS servers (secondary etc) the easiest way to
add them is to edit /etc/resolv.conf and add more nameserver entries.

That should get you up and running.

cheers
Brian

I don't know if it works with this device, but the principal is the same...
Have a look at my Lexar Media JumpShot cable tutorial.

Go to Tutorials, then Lexar Media blah blah...

It should be easy from there.

My XP Pro and Mandrake 8.2 boxes are on the same network. I usually telnet into MD

shared by both.

Due to the security setup used at my job, I have to connect to my via modem and it has

What I'd LIKE to do, however, is dial in via XP, but use the connection from my MD box.

I guess I need to tell XP to share the connection and tell MD to route requests
withthe address myjob.com to the XP box.

I obviously haven't been looking in the right places. Can anyone point me at a good

What services are running? Are you running NIS? If so are you a client
of a server?

Also, are you running a firewall of any kind?

Does the IP address on your machine match the name on your machine? (Do
you call your machine monkey.foorbar.com but cannot do a dns lookup?)

Also, how large is your log files? the delay might be the logging of a
succesful login to files that take to long to append too...

I believe that all the users on my system (there are only a handful) use
the default shell (bash) that would be set by using the useradd command.

And as far as restricting the users that can login via ssh, well, I
haven't used the "AllowUsers" keyword in sshd_config, if that is what

Is any of that related to the problem that I've been experiencing? By

Re: [expert] pybliographic broken?!

2002-07-03 Thread Praedor Tempus

I had to download the source rpm, fix a braindead inability to find librecode
(I installed the mandrake rpms for recode and recode-devel but it installs
the devel libs in /usr/local/lib! What other Mandrake-native rpm does this?
None. Why does recode-devel and only recode-devel want to install there?)

Rebuilding pybliographic seems to have fixed the problem as I am now once
again able to edit reference db entries. Whew! Was worried there for a
minute. Cannot live without a decent reference manager.

I absolutely NEED pybliographic. I have been using it for years to handle my
references for scientific writing. I just installed the 8.2 version of
pybliographic (pybligrapher-1.0.11) and find it appears broken. It will open
up reference databases OK but it will not permit editing or adding to the
database.

What has been done to this beautiful, one-of-a-kind app to break it in
Mandrake 8.2?

It is not really different.
But Any changes to an OS can and often will affect how that OS will
install on any particular system irregardless of how previous version
installed on the Same system.
It is just a hardware/software fact of life.

gee, I would not make such a sweeping statement, under most conditions
anyway, (hope that sounded wishy-washy enough) as "Any changes to an OS" at
least in Linux. I do agree that the shared mem would normally be the case,
and maybe the way the kernel gets the mem info from the Motherboard BIOS is
different enough to cause the change, I just did not know if you had some
info about that that I did not have. but hmm "irregardless of how
previous version" is kind of a "closed source" perspective, if you don't mind
my saying so. I like to think there are folks out in "open source land" that
do have some concept of the different ways different changes in the OS reacts
to different changes in configuration, and that they will share the info. a
little different than trying to get M$ to explain why my pcmcia card reader
will work under win 98 but not ME. ( I do "understand" their explanation,
but I wish they would share a lot more info instead of expecting me to accept
as fact certain propositions without allowing me to confirm independently the
basics of the propositions.)

[expert] Miscellaneous 8.2 Terminal Hangs

2002-07-03 Thread Rob Gillen

I've tried to query all of you gurus before regarding various hangs on
my system, but as far as I can tell, nobody has replied to my question.
So, I'll give it a go again. I've read everything on the mailing list
that was written in the last three months about system hangs and freezes
with both 8.1 and 8.2, but none have addressed the problem that I have
been seeing. Most have described complete system freezes where nothing
could be done besides a reboot, but what I am seeing is a bit different.

I have installed 8.2 on a Dell Precision 410 (Pentium III - 500).
Everything works fine for a while, and then within a period of 24 to 72
hours, the system develops a strange disregard for any terminal / shell
sessions. Interestingly, I had a similar problem with 7.2 on the same
model machine, and it went away, but I have no idea what cured it. The
strange thing about this is that any current terminal sessions that are
in progress have no problems, and I can do any normal command-line work
without problems. If I am logged into a window manager such as KDE, I
also have no problem starting applications from icons as long as they do
not require a shell to begin or to work properly. If I am using a shell
when this anomaly occurs, and I try to su to another user, it will try
to start another shell, but will hang. At first I thought that the
problem might be related to something with the network. But when I am
waiting for the hanging shell, I can browse the web, etc. Another
interesting bit is that I can ssh into the machine, and will be given a
login prompt, but as soon as ssh tries to invoke a shell, the login hangs.

I am really at a loss as to what the problem might be. It seems to be
related to shells acquiring a tty, but I'm not sure about that. Now
that I think of it, next time this happens, if I have a terminal open,
I'll try to do a strace on a new shell session to see where the hangup
occurs. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. One other thing
that might be related is the fact that I've had problems shutting the
system down cleanly. The entire shutdown process gets hung up when it
tries to umount the /net subdirectory. I turned off amd, and so far
that seems to have helped, but I only made that change yesterday, so I
cannot be completely sure.

I'm not sure how experienced some people on this list are with deep
problems like this. The silence from the last one leaves me to believe
that either nobody has a clue or that nobody is interested (because
nobody else has experienced the same problem -- at least nobody has
described the same problem). Either way, if I figure it out, I'll try
to detail what the problem was and how to resolve it.

Rob

It is not really different.
But Any changes to an OS can and often will affect how that OS will
install on any particular system irregardless of how previous version
installed on the Same system.
It is just a hardware/software fact of life.

F1 at the splash screen and at the boot prompt enter

linux mem=(total ram-video ram)

If your vid is say 16mb then you need to enter linux mem=240M

[expert] FooBar install, can't mount root from CDROM

2002-07-03 Thread Ken Thompson

Hi All,
I'm trying to get 8.2 b4 to install on an Amptron *all in 1* board and it
keeps getting a kernel panic mesage something to the effect of: Kernel panic,
can't mount root fs at 1:03.
The system locks at this point and needs a hard reset.
Never seems to make it to the stage of locating the CD drive or loading into
memory. I've tried using the boot disk also.
I have also tried different HDDs, same result.
 Basic hardware:
Amptrom MainBoard W/modem, NIC, video and sound.
256Mb RAM PC-133
Maxtor 40Gb HDD
Win XP Home on 20GB of drive.
MDK 8.1 installs without a hitch.
Any ideas???

Re: [expert] NFS Permissions on Mandrake 8.2

2002-07-03 Thread Kayne McGladrey

Hello,

Didn't know about /var/lib/nfs/xtab, so it isn't what I expected. Only
familliar with fstab. This xtab must have been automatically generated by
something.

$ cat /var/lib/nfs/xtab
/home/kmcgladr/images
mabeline.localdomain(ro,async,wdelay,hide,secure,root_squash,no_all_squash,subtree_check,secure_locks,mapping=identity,anonuid=-2,anongid=-2)
/home/kmcgladr/images
mabeline.localdomain(ro,async,wdelay,hide,secure,root_squash,no_all_squash,subtree_check,secure_locks,mapping=identity,anonuid=-2,anongid=-2)

- I don't know how to check the suid bit. I do know how to set it, but not
how to test for it.

from the server:
$ id jennifer
uid=502(jennifer) gid=502(jennifer)
groups=502(jennifer),100(users),501(kmcgladr)

from the client
$ id jennifer
uid=502(jennifer) gid=502(jennifer)
groups=502(jennifer),100(users),501(kmcgladr)

- No, I'm not running quotas (to the best of my knowledge).

- Using diskdrake
/home is ext3
/home/kmcgladr/images is listed as "linux native". Would that be ext2?

I initially tried setting this up using the right-click "Share" menu item (in
Konqueror). Only after that did not work did I attempt to configure NFS,
based on the NFS-howto at the Linux Documentation Project. The manuals that
shipped with the Power Pack didn't go into anywhere near this much detail.

Is the source of my problems that the images volume is using another
filesystem? And does that "share" menu item work for other end users?

As for Samba, I'm already running it so VMWare has access to the host
filesystem. I'm trying to not run it on my real network card in order to
prevent any configuration conflicts.

Thanks,

Kayne

Thanks -- just checked this and I had vga=normal in the system (must
have had some other setting in mind when I was typing my reply).

There is one, but it looks like the only difference is that the stanza
doesn't have a vga= line to enable the framebuffer. It's calling the
same vmlinuz as the default kernel. Unfortunately, I haven't used this
kernel since the day of the install so I'm beginning to suspect that I
really misconfigured my custom kernel.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: [expert] Mandrake in an ISP environment

Thanks to everyone who made great comments on the list and also to me directly.
The BSD boxes are being retired, they are well past their prime and are
struggling to
keep up, so the new boxes will be running Linux. It does come down to what
you are
comfortable with in the long run. They all are the same under the hood,
Mandrake,
Red Hat, Suse, etc. The difference being what comes with them. Red Hat
seems to
be more of roll your own vs. Suse and Mandrake that do a wonderful job of
giving you
a system with all the bells and whistles!

So, again, thank you. I will let you know how it goes!
