Ah... OK I just started using KDE So I could know what others
are needing/doing. Windowmaker was pleasantly silent.

OK, you are painted red, and hello "embarrassed". Actually there is some
silly setup switch in the gui, such as KDE, where you can have your
system beep (term) go to your external speakers, as opposed to using the
system speaker. I've used it in the past but don't really remember where
the switch is, and I don't really care either.

Maybe this function is turned on for the user having the sound problems
but it does not mean the sound card is fully setup to do all you would
hope that it can do. I think we would need to know a bit more about the
problem in order to diagnose it from afar...

That's devfs lloking for things to mount.

Your ide burner in your previous post is being mounted by hotplug and
devfs when you plug it in.

At this time, you can get it recognized at boot with

hde=ide-cs

in the append statement of lilo, but for burning? No. ide-cs does not
yet support that function, and the scsi cs modules are drivers for
specific hardware rather than emulators.

Seti on my system (athlon 1.4 t-bird) can give up to a 10 deg C rise in
temp - however, I believe "burn-in" is a term that is not totally
related to heat - it means to to stress or exercise the CPU or other
part of the system. Each of memtest, GCC and Seti stress different
parts of the system (think of how many transistors on a CPU and what you
would need to do to test each one!!), so if a real stubborn problem, use
the lot and more!

The pcmcia script runs at boot time. I don't have hde in fstab so it
will only be mounted by manual command.

I am wondering if anyone knows much programming, if they would be able to
port this:

http://www.thieveryut.com/

It looks really nice, and if it was packed up in an RPM or better - a Loki

If you know any one who is able to port it, and willing, they are offering
the code to anyone who will port it:

"I've had lots of mail from Mac and Linux users asking for a umod version of

advanced features, making it incompatible with these operating systems.
However, we are more than willing to share our code, so if there are any
Linux or Mac coders out there up to the task of doing a port, please contact
me."

Darren,
Actually the "beep" you hear has nothing to do with your sound card.
the PCM speaker used by the mobo for "alarms" (yes your Mobo actually
has beep codes to warn you of problems during boot.) doesn't go through
or use the sound card at all. In fact just for grits and shins I've got
a little Libretto 30 that plays sound through the PCM speaker. (no sound

You'll need to look in the man page for your terminal window. Some
have a preferences tab (like gnome-terminal) others have a switch you

Well, looking at the burnK7 (or other portions of cpuburn) I was
very skeptical as to how it could really stress the system, as it
ks just a couple of floating point instructions in an endless
loop. But from others' input, it seems to peg the cpu temperature
meter pretty high, higher than i would think for such a piece of
software. The loop is too short to not fit in cache (or probably
the instruction pipeline itself -- that depends on the size, I'm not
sure) and depending on CPU timing issues and stalls (usually affecting
older Pentiums) it might not exercise the processor as much as is
desireable.

I ran across a similar burning type program (shareware) back in my
DOS days - it was purported to be an industry-standard burn in tool,
and said it was doing all sorts of complicated floating point operations,
cubic splines, fast fourier transforms, and so forth. I'm not so sure
that's all that better, especially given that dumb DOS compilers would
insert fwaits before floating point instructions, and the coprocessor
wouldn't get all that hot anyway :).

> memtest86, might not pass cpuburn. It's an old overclocker's tool to

And hardware that passes memtest86 may fail in a stressful session with
gcc. :( Memtest is sequential and performs a selected set of tests on
the memory, but it can't (or doesn't) simulate the somewhat random-like
access to memory that gcc does. Then again, gcc doesn't randomly 'walk'
all over your whole memory space, but only a small subsection of it.

I have that already, sorry I did not mention it.

I'm not familiar with pcmcia, but for an ide burner, you need a line in
/etc/modules that reads 'scsi_hostadapter' and a line in modules.conf
that reads 'probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi'. I think that's all I
did, along with 'hdb=ide-scsi' in lilo.conf as you've already done. As
for your pcmcia card working at boot, I don't know. Perhaps a line in
modules.conf.

Just finished installing LM8.2 on a system which had an old ~300MB WD HD
as a W98 swap disk... the install would never get past the first few
seconds until I disconnected it. So even older WD drives suck...

[expert] Modules prob II

2002-07-07 Thread Wolfgang Bornath

Hi, another one:

My /etc/modules.conf says:

alias usb-interface usb-ohci
alias sound-slot-0 trident
above trident snd-pcm-oss
alias eth0 sis900

and usb, sound and eth0 work perfectly. But while searching for a
solution for my other modules problem (see other mail) I found in
/var/log/messages:

modprobe: Can't locate module eth1
modprobe: Can't locate module eth2
modprobe: Can't locate module eth3
modprobe: Can't locate module eth4
modprobe: Can't locate module eth5
modprobe: Can't locate module eth6
modprobe: Can't locate module eth7
modprobe: Can't locate module eth8
modprobe: Can't locate module eth9

Same goes with the sound module, also counting up to 9. I only have one
eth and one soundcard.

Not that it matters too much because all is working fine. But why do I
get those messages and how do I make them vanish?

[expert] Modules probs

2002-07-07 Thread Wolfgang Bornath

Hi,

I connected an external Sony CD/RW via pcmcia to my laptop. The
kernel card service recognizes it as

kernel: Linux Kernel Card Services Kernel Version
kernel: options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:03.0
kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 11 with 00:01.4
kernel: Yenta IRQ list 00b8, PCI irq11
kernel: Socket status: 3411
kernel: cs: IO port probe 0x0c00-0x0cff: clean.
kernel: cs: IO port probe 0x0100-0x04ff:
excluding 0x378-0x37f
0x480-0x48f 0x4d0-0x4d7
kernel: cs: IO port probe 0x0a00-0x0aff: clean.
kernel: cs: memory probe 0xa000-0xa0ff: clean.
kernel: hde: SONY CD-RW CRX700E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
kernel: ide2 at 0x180-0x187,0x386 on irq 3
kernel: ide_cs: hde: Vcc = 5.0, Vpp = 0.0

If I have it connected and switched on at boot time I get this error
message:

kernel: hde: driver not present
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ide-cd
kernel: hde: driver not present

This message is repeated several times.
I cannot mount the drive because it doesn't exist.

But if I plug it in during runtime I get

kernel: hde: SONY CD-RW CRX700E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
kernel: ide2 at 0x180-0x187,0x386 on irq 5
kernel: hde: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 8192kB Cache
kernel: ide_cs: hde: Vcc = 5.0, Vpp = 0.0

Now I can mount the drive with 'mount /dev/hde /mnt/disk' and I can
read and copy files.

The real problem is, I want to use it with any burning app, so I have
to put 'hde=ide-scsi' into lilo.conf. I did that but cdrecord doesn't
find the drive.

How the heck do you stop it from beeping when you backspace too far at a
console? I know this has nothing to do with your problem, but it's been
bugging me for ages. :)
