If anyone has pointers, please share. If your ADSL modem is hooked to eth0, and you get your IP address via DHCP, then you can place a script in the /etc/dhcpc/ directory with the name "dhcpcd-eth0.exe" (don't forget to make it executable!) and it will run every time the dhcpcd daemon determines that your IP address on that interface has changed. I use it to run a lynx command that hits a page on the ZoneEdit.com site, which determines the IP address that the hit came from, and updates my DNS entries there accordingly. The script then goes on to send me an e-mail notification of the change, including the output of "ifconfig eth0". -- Bill Mullen [EMAIL PROTECTED] MA, USA RLU #270075 MDK 8.1 & 9.0 The engineer is neither optimist nor pessimist. Been watching this one, I'm OK here as I have an alleged 500KB download speed, never seen it yet !. But why not add a feature something like used in Kazaa or bit torrent, so that the download is from multiple sources and it keeps restarting the download on link failure. You could then leave the machine on when you go to bed and hopefully its all done when you get up. It would be way nice if I could do a MandrakeUpdate at work/school with my laptop and select to save the downloaded rpms so I could go home, connect up to my desktop, and upgrade it too. MandrakeUpdate deletes all the rpms it downloads, and good thing else you would begin to seriously consume hdd space. What I would like is an option to save the rpm downloaded by MandrakeUpdate...perhaps to another directory or simply leave them in their cache directory until I elect to dump them. Make MandrakeUpdate default behavior to delete the downloads but give an option to save them. [expert] adsl logging ip add changes live
Hi there, This might be a little bit newbie, not sure. I want to keep an eye on my ip address off my adsl line, as it changes I would like a scirpt to run, basically uploading to a hosted out website. Currently I use a cron job every 15 mins that checks if the current ip is the same as the last in /var/log/syslog, if not then and only then upload it. I do not run any mail services, I do however run apache live for webpages only. It is on a text only machine, Mandrake9.1, P1 100mhz, that doubles as my gateway for small lan at home. If anyone has pointers, please share. I dont really want to run dyndns just yet, but if this turns out to be the best solution, then so be it, I will. Oh, I am more a user, and not so good at bash & scripting, so if there isnt an easy way, dont worry, I'll go the dyndns route. Re: [expert] Java and font problem on ML 9.1
I've noticed something similar on Mandrake 8.0. The dialog fonts are too big, but only on awt components, the swing components seem to be fine. The font itself is actually larger, not just it's calculated height, which would just blank space above and/or below the text. Oddly, with Java 1.4.1, only the odd point size fonts are too big, the even point size fonts are OK. Java 1.4.2 beta, all the font sizes are too big! I haven't really looked into it, I just assumed Java was hosed. Gilligan Guilherme Cirne wrote: I sent the message below to the Newbie list but unfortunately nobody could help me. Obviously, in cases where it isn't > actually written on the stick. 66, 100, 133, etc. are just marketing labels. Ram is what it'll do. The more important specs are ns and cas rating, but quality ram will most often outperform it's specs. Generic ram often won't live up to it's label. 1000/mhz = ns. The most important bios timings are mhz, cas, and bank-interleaving. I've got a mix of pc100 (6 years old) and pc133 ram sticks, I've been usin all along at 135mhz, cas2, 4-bank interleaving. The pc100 was sold as 8ns, cas2, but I've used it for years at 1000/135 = 7.4 ns Set to cas3 it'll do 155mhz (6.45ns) and still pass an overnite run of memtest86 with -0- errors. My daughter's computer is using 66mhz ram, so old it was manufactured before the marketing labels were even invented, reliably at 112 mhz, cas3. 'Course the ram quality is only half the story. Equally important is the motherboard quality, the caps it uses, and a little over spec IO voltage (+5 to 10%), and a decent high quality PSU with very steady output. Most quality mobo's furnish over spec IOv by default, usually 105%. Corsair XMS, probly te best ram currently available, won't run worth a damn on a PC Chips motherboard, with substandard caps, fed by a wobbly generic oem PSU. -- Tom Brinkman Corpus Christi, Texas Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [expert] pioneer dvr-105 issues
Just bought and installed a pioneer dvr-105 (dvd-r/rw burner). I've installed it as /dev/hdc. Two issues: 1) In xcdroast it only appears as an atapi device, rather than available as emulated scsi, unlike my plextor cdrw which appears as both. I tried to remedy this with adding 'hdc=ide-scsi' to the append line in /etc/lilo.conf but no change. Am I supposed to edit /etc/modules.conf ? This is what I already have in modules.conf: probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi ataraid probeall usb-interface usb-uhci alias eth0 eepro100 above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1 options bttv radio=0 card=9 gbuffers=4 2) The second problem is actually using the dvd burner. I believe cdrecord-2.01-0.a16.1mdk supports dvd burning, and I am using it. But xcdroast fails to either burn anything onto a dvd-rw, or to blank it. No way I am making dvd-r coasters until I am sure it works, at which point I hope not to make coasters anyway. Advice/assistance very much welcomed -- Azrael ("\''/").___..--'''"-._ `0_ O ) `-. I think it's too slow to be acceptable. I also hope to see a *faster* Mandrake Control Center, it takes ages to load every module. In 9.0 it was much faster (almost no delay). Cel400. In fact, I sold the laptop to a friend, who is still happily running RH 8.0 on it. I also always saw better performance under Gnome vs. KDE. As to Mozilla specifically, it is a known resource pig. True, it has improved immensely from the early betas and releases candidates, but it is still a monster for memory. I always had better performance using Galeon under Gnome, with either Mandrake or RedHat. In spite of my above comments, I now use Mandrake 9.1, KDE and Mozilla, but on a much faster laptop :-) -- Dave Sherman MCSE, MCSA, CCNA I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers. RE: [expert] Java and font problem on ML 9.1
Hi, I use JBuilder on Linux with Sun's j2sdk1.4.1_02 all the time with no problem. Go ahead and send me the screenshot and I'll see if anything jumps out at me... David -Original Message- From: Guilherme Cirne [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 9:58 AM To: Linux - Expert Subject: [expert] Java and font problem on ML 9.1 I sent the message below to the Newbie list but unfortunately nobody could help me. I apologise if anyone is reading it for the second time. Hi all, I have a font problem in java apps running under ML 9.1 which is very hard to explain so I have screenshot showing exactly what I mean. I can send this to anyone who is willing to help. Basically what happens is this. The height of the default java font (Dialog) is not being calculated correctly under ML 9.1. So all components, like buttons, are much higher than they should be. I know that Dialog is just a link which by default points to Lucida Sans and this can be changed in the jre font.properties file. But the strange thing is that if the font of a particular component is set to Lucida Sans directly then the height is calculated correctly and the component looks like it should. So the problem isn't the Lucida Sans font. This can be seen clearly on the screenshot which I made. This only happens on ML 9.1. On 9.0 it works as it should. I have also tried different jre's like Blackdown's 1.4.1 and Sun's 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 beta and they all have this problem. So this is a ML 9.1 specific issue. I have also performed various installations of ML 9.1 on different machines and the results are the same. So if anybody has seen this and can help me I would be very grateful. And don't forget, I can send anyone a screenshot which makes it much clearer to see the problem. TIA, -- Guilherme Cirne [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I looked into your suggetion but I could only find the Mandrake source for kernel 2.4.18 not 2.4.21 Also the path to these sources was nothing like in the example. most of the sub-directorites didn't exist anyway. I appreciate this is not your fault and thank you anyway. I will try to get the correct kernel source and set up the Makefile to use the ones I find and then take it from there. [expert] Serial ATA SiI6112 freezes
Hi, I've recently upgraded to an Abit nforce2 NF7-S (v2.0) motherboard, running serial ATA drives (Maxtor 120GB & WD Raptor 36GB) via the onboard SiI6112 controller. I got the usual SATA problems, i.e. DMA wasn't set correctly, but these were corrected using: echo max_kb_per_request:15 > /proc/ide/hde/settings hdparm -d1 -X66 /dev/hde early on in rc.sysinit file (now I get 55 MBytes/sec!). However, in addition to these, every so often I get a full system lock up, apparently as a result of large scale SATA drive access (usually after 10s of MBs to GBs of data transfer). I have tried installing Mandrake on my old parallel ATA RAID 5 system (detected as SCSI), and even though it does reduce the number of crashes, I still get a crash once in a while as I'm using the SATA drives. I'm guessing it's a kernel issue, relating to the SATA drivers. Does anyone have a fix? Cheers, -Karl Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
