2002-01-15 Thread Don Irvin

Thanks, but I've done all that. If I change the ip of the logging host on
the router and make no other modifications it logs properly to the RH box.
I'd really like to have the LM81 box be the log server.

Again on LM:
Successful select, descriptor count = 1, Activity on: 26 Message from inetd
socket: #26, host: 9.139.4.8 INET socket error: 11 = Resource temporarily
unavailable.

On RH:

[expert] Remote syslog problems with LM81 and Cisco gear

2002-01-15 Thread Don Irvin

I'm running LM8.1 and trying to set up as remote syslog server for my Cisco.
I've read all the doc's and run syslogd in debug mode. The output from debug
is:
(no workie)
Successful select, descriptor count = 1, Activity on: 26 Message from inetd
socket: #26, host: 9.139.4.8 INET socket error: 11 = Resource temporarily
unavailable. Called logerr, msg: recvfrom inet logmsg: syslog.err<43>, flags
4, from msglog, msg syslogd: recvfrom inet: Resource temporarily unavailable
Called fprintlog, logging to FILE /var/log/messages Listening on syslog UDP
port. Calling select, active file descriptors (max 26): 3 26 Select
interrupted.
When I do the same on a RH7.1 syslog server I get:
(works)
Successful select, descriptor count = 1, Activity on: 10 Message from inetd
socket: #10, host: 192.168.1.9 Host name for your address (192.168.1.9)

FILE /var/log/boot.log Listening on syslog UDP port. Calling select, active

Any suggestions? I really need to get this going asap. Pardon my ignorance
if I've missed the obvious.
Thanks for your help!

Re: [expert] Mandrake 7.2 halt when load apm on ThinkPad 600X

2001-04-02 Thread Don

Information for Alliance Promotion chipset users

 Loïc Grenié (<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>), Henrik Harmsen ()

 6 March 2000

1. Support chipsets

The apm driver in the SVGA server is for Alliance Promotion graphics
chipsets. The following chipsets are supported:

   o 6422

Old chipset. The driver is still very unstable, including computer
crashes. You would prefer using XFree86 3.3.x for this chipset.

   o AT24

As found in Diamond Stealth Video 2500. Quite similar to AT3D.

   o AT25, AT3D

AT3D is found in Hercules Stingray 128/3D. Most other Voodoo Rush based
cards use the AT25 which is identical except it doesn't have the 3D
 stuff in it.

2. Acceleration

The apm driver uses the XAA (XFree86 Acceleration Architecture) in the SVGA
server. It has support for the following acceleration:

   o Bitblts (rectangle copy operation)

   o Lines (solid, single pixel)

   o Filled rectangles

   o  CPU->Screen image transfers.

o CPU->Screen colour expansion (text accel).

o Screen->Screen colour expansion (cached text accel).

o Mono 8x8 pattern fill. Not for 6422.

o Colour 8x8 pattern fill (in 8bpp). Not for 6422.

   o Hardware cursor.

   o Pixmap caching.

All in 8, 16 and 32 bpp modes. In 24bpp mode only Bitblts and Filled rectan-
gles is supported. Also VESA DPMS power save mode is fully supported with
"standby", "suspend" and "off" modes (set with with the "xset dpms" command).

3. DGA

Full DGA 2.0 support with framebuffer access and drawing acceleration.

4. Video

A limited hardware support for video decoding on AT24 and AT25/3D. It can
display an image in YUV colours inside the desktop. There are some more
exotic formats (YUV 4.1.1, YUV 4.0.0, RGB 8,16.32bpp).

5. Shadow framebuffer

There is a mode, called shadow framebuffer, where the graphics is only used
to display the images. All rendering is done in memory in a so-called shadow
framebuffer. This mode is useful if you need lots of reading in the video
memory. You will have to put

   Option "ShadowFB"

in your XF86Config file.

6. Configuration

First: Please run the xf86config program to create a correct configuration.

You can turn off hardware cursor by inserting the following line in the
Device section of the XF86Config file:

   Option "SWcursor"

Or turn off hardware acceleration:

   Option "noaccel"

Or turn off MMIO

   Option "nolinear"

Please don't specify the amount of video RAM you have or which chipset you
have in the config file, let the driver probe for this. Also please don't put
any "clocks" line in the device section since these chips have a fully pro-
grammable clock that can take (almost) any modeline you throw at it. It might
fail at some specific clock values but you should just try a slightly differ-
ent clock and it should work.

7. glide2x

There is support for the XF86Rush extension for use with the glide2x library.

8. Questions

Any questions regarding this driver should be sent to Loïc Grenié. It should
be possible to add support for the 3210 chipset if someone needs it.

Did you try Ctrl-Alt-Backspace key combination? This should have put you
back to run level 3. Then you should be able to load back to GNOME or KDE
which ever you like.

Also if you are overclocking, return the CPU's to their original speed during

Usually Audio cards only have one port for the CD-Rom to plug into. Even
with two connections there is no switch to change from drive to drive. If
you unconnect one or the other drive from the audio card you will find that
either one connected will play. To play the second CDRW, you probably need
a second audio card, and speakers.

if you type nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where x's are the ip address you should

Running Mandrake 7.2 on an IBM thinkpad i series 1500 2621
and runs great. Mandrake detected all the hardware, and only thing I
had to do is make sure the ALSA sound driver was loaded. Run sndconfig
just after logging in as root, and completed some minor setting up in X
Windows, and thats all it took. The Laptop is running a Celeron 466 MHZ

Re: [expert] Fw: hpt366 hinders boot, system crashes or freezes

2001-01-28 Thread Don

OKay, What I did was only use the UDMA33 ports for cdrom's and use ide3 port
to run Win2k, and Mandrake 7.2. Win2k is the master 20.5 GB and Linux is on
the 15.3 GB slave drive. The system boots off of the MBR of the master drive.
Now in bios set the boot sequence to (EXT A C)
and the next option "Boot Sequence EXT means " is set to ATA/66.
send me a note if you need more information.

Re: [expert] Mdk, NTFS, and Win200

2001-01-13 Thread Don

No problem using LILO or GRUB to boot Win2K
or Linux partitions. Have Win2k and Mandrake 7.2 on
my Thinkpad, each with 6 GB partitions. Of course
you need to load Win2k first, and Mandrake 7.2
last to get everything working right. Linux can even
read the NTFS partition if it is mounted correctly.
Good Luck,

Don

Re: [expert] Laptop recommendations

2000-12-28 Thread Don

I'm using an IBM thinkpad i series 1500 RR2, which means refurbished, but
most of the thinkpads do real well with Mandrake Linux. This system is
running Win2K and Mandrake 7.2 on a 12 GB harddrive, and have not had any
problerms with it.. I am using a pcmcia card that has both the ethernet card
connection, and modem (56K) connection on it. I realy use ADSL for
connection but used the modem while traveling in Europe. The thinkpads have
a track point system for the mouse, and three buttons to allow for three
button mouse, or scrolling mouse. Processor is a celeron 466, with 14.3" TFT
active matrix screen. These LCD screens won't get much higher resolution
than 1024x768. The 15.1 inch screens will get higher, but that also adds
lots more weight.
anyway Good Luck

Well, don't know what the problem is from your post. But if you will put

Thank you so much. I did not have my HW clock set to GMT, However when I

opening up the program and checking the box and then unchecking it.

[expert] Hardware vs System Clock

2000-12-08 Thread Don

Still have not resolved why Mandrake 7.2 doesnot correctly pick up the time
shown on the hardware clock. When I reboot this dual boot machine into a
win2k, the clock is correct, and checking the clock running in bios, also is
correct. So when I boor up into Mandrake 7.2, the system had the correct
minutes and seconds, but the hours were 10 hours behind. The system is set
to Pacific Standard time, and I have to go and change the Hours in KDE clock.

anyone have a clue why the system does not get the correct time??

Thanks,

Re: [expert] Clock

2000-12-06 Thread Don

No That was not the problem, I just reflash the BIOS to BP6RU125.bin BIOS,
and the problem is still here. I think it has something to do with the
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit fle in Mandrake 7.2, because that is the file that sets
the time at boot up.

But thanks,

[expert] Clock

2000-12-05 Thread Don

I am trying to figure out why does not Mandrake 7.2, and/or KDE2.0 see the
system clock? Whenever I reboot this system the time gets reset to 00:00:00
and starts counting from there. I usually reset the clock in KDE, but must
reset the clock each time I reboot. This is a dual boot machine, with Win2k
and Mandrake 7.2. Win2k shows the correct time. I have reloaded MDK7.2 SMP
on this system 14 times now trying to get things to run stable.

Machine Info:
Abit BP6 with two Celeron 466's not overcclocked
512 MB memory
ATI Rage 128 with 32MB Mem (AGP)
Adaptec 2940 controlling 2GB Jaz drive
WD 20.5 GB master Drive(Win2k) and 15.3 GB slave on IDE3 (HPT366)
  controller
Linksys NIC 10/100
Haupauge WINTV card

Well this depends on the version of dos that you load partition magic with.
I use the dos version from Windows 98se, and then I use PM to work 20 + GB

Re: [expert] Perl scripts won't work???

When writting perl script my first line also includes a -w
like so:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w

This very important switch tells Perl to produce extra warning messages about
potentiallydangerous constracts. You should always develop your programs under
-w

See Learning Perl(O'Reilly)2nd edition page 5.

By the program runs for me with out any problems.

hda6 mounts /home, and hda7 is where /usr is mounted. m Now hda5 is 500MB
hda6 is 500 MB, and hda7 is 2 GB. Swap is hda8, and is 62 MB. I Dual Boot
using grub. which is onj the root of the hda drive. I used theMandrake 7.1

turned out to be a conflict of IRQ's and memory addresses. Especially with my
sound card. run "cat /proc/interrupts" to see what IRQ's you are using and also
try "cat /proc/ioports" to see if you have conflicts with memory addresses.
Good Luck

I bought it last year in March, and it was the previous years model.
So that makes it a 1998 years model. Actually manufactured in
October 1998. Actually the later model thinkpad i series should
all be able to run any version of Linux with little or no problems.

Re: [expert] RPM content list before installing

2000-08-10 Thread Don

If you open KDE using startx and then in X-Windows, you can select the RPM file,
and a box will open allowing you to view the contents before you install the
RPM file. This also allows you to browse the already installed RPM's and
uninstall those that you don't want. Only problem is one can break his system
uninstalling required files. Of course you need to be logged in as root to
install the RPM files, but you can view the contents of the RPM file as a
regular user.

I finally went through all of the Documentation and could not find

Hi Gary,

I ran the modprobe files as you suggested, and went through
the v4l-conf utility as you wrote, and I still get the error:

I'm stuck on this one. I tried deleting the /dev/video device and reinstalling
it several times. Both as a ln -s and as mknod. I don't know how to fix this
problem.

Do you have any ideas?

Hello,

I have a pc running Mandrake 6.1, with an ATAPI
cdrom drive NEC CDR-3001. The drive always worked fine
until yesterday, when it quit on me right in the middle of an RPM installation.
Now I get the errors described below 90% of times, no matter which
cdrom I try to read. Even when mount succeeds, I just get the top directory
listing, but trying to cat some files, or open it via kfm times out, takes a
lng time, or just leaves me with a blank

The reason I'm posting this is: could it be some SW/configuration fault (like
some file I canceled by mistake/something which is looped on itself..)? How
could I find out?

I'd really hate to have to fetch money for a new drive right now
Any help is really appreciated,

Marco

I I try to open it by clicking on the KDE icon, I get:
KFM error Could not mount
Error log:

If I try from the console, as root, I get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,

[root@polaris marco]# umount /mnt/cdrom/
umount: /mnt/cdrom/: not mounted

In both cases the led blinks a few times and then dies, and no noise
whatsoever
comes from the drive

In mknod how would one create a device that is linked to another device?

I would like to make video to link to video0. I have already found the video0

this is the error Iam getting:

I have been reading all of the problems that others have had with
version 7.1 and sometimes think they are user caused. What we have
to do is figure out the real cause of problems and then try and help. As with
any OS, the user needs to understand how it works, and how her or his hardware
fits in, and what must be done to make the OS compatible with the hardware.

I am not sure about this or what the difference is, but
my BP6 system is using two 7200RPM Western Digital
drives on the HPT366 controller ide3 port with hde20.5GB
and hdf 15.5GB, without any problems. I had WD drives in my
other systems, and never thought there would be a problem
using these drives on an SMP machine. I am still running
Mandrake 7.0 linux, and am going to wait to see what
happens befor I try upgrading to 7.1 or later mandrake

OK, When the Blue High Point BIOS screen shows, Does your Drive show
" Mode 4" ? If not then your Hard Drive is not configured correctly.Western
Digital Drives work very well with the BP6 mainboard when set properly.
Western Digital provides a floppy disk to set the drives in UDMA66 mode.

My System
ABIT BP6 with HPT366 onboard & Driver 1.2
2xCelerons 466 (sometimes overclocked)
256MB SDRAM PC133
ATI AGP Rage 128 32 MB RAM
SB AWE 64 ISA
LinkSys PCI NIC running ADSL
Memorex 48X on IDE1

Re: [expert] UDMA66 problem

If you are using a Western Digital drive, make sure that the Mode is set to
UDMA66. They provide a floppy disk to do that with. If this is not done the
drive can behave differently. This system is using two 7200RPM WD drives
on the UDMA66 IDE3 port.

Re: [expert] Mdk7.1 on laptop

My experience with loading Linux on my IBM Thinkpad went ok except for getting
the sound card (YamahaOPL3) to work properly. I tries Slackware7, All RedHat
versions and Mandrake 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. None of these worked with my sound
card because there was always a conflict and would lock up the computer when
some sound events were played. I tried Mandrake 7.1 and found that somehow
they have fixed the problem. So that is what I am using now. Mandrake 7.1
looks like a great version of Linux.

Nt is on hde drive, and linux is on the second drive at hdf. I do not
have any hard drives on the ide1 ide2 or ide4 ports. My CD-ROMS are on
ide1 port, and this setup works very well. I have a very stable system,
and am using the original High Point drivers that came on the disk.
Running 2 Celerons at 466 MHZ not over clocked, right now. System staty
cool and can run the PS test with out crashing. For a lot of help with
the BP6 board you should check out the message board at

Sometimes the " /etc/resolv.conf" file needs to be edited to include the
DNS servers that your ISP gave you. If this is not added you probably
won't see any thing from the Internet. Below is an example of my
/etc/resolv.conf file:

search emad
nameserver 207.67.165.4
nameserver 209.203.108.249
nameserver 207.16.23.254
nameserver 192.168.0.246
nameserver 192.168.0.1

List the ones given by your ISP first

Should have given the actual driver for Linux as

BTW this is unzipped in linux using bzip2 -d ide.2.2.15-17.2.patch.bz2 and
then use the regular patch installation routines for your version of Linux.

Another way to save the day is to remove the user that he is running
startx from, and then add the user back again, This will also rebuild
the KDE desktop for that user.

remove the .Xauthority file from the home directory of the user you are
trying to startx into. This will reestablish the KDE desktop and rebuild
the .Xauthority file when you use startx again.

Re: [expert] Mandrake (smp) on a dual celeron ABIT BP6 motherboard

2000-05-08 Thread Don

During the install from CD-ROM MDK 7.0-2 will aid in building a floppy
to install to UDMA66 disks. I have two UDMA66 drives 20.5GB & 15.5GB.
The first 2GB of HDE is NT4.0, and the 2nd drive HDF is all MDK
2.2.14-15-smp. Boot up is using Lilo on HDE which defaults to Linux
running on HDF1, HDF5, & HDF6. Lilo will also let me boot into NT4.0
for work related stuff. My temperature monitoring program is Health and
notifies me of any change in CPU Temperatures and Fan Speeds. The
system is using two Celeron 466 CPU's, and ocassionally over clocked to
580MHZ. Great board, and lots of fun to play with.

Check the /etc/lilo.config file to insure that the parameters are correct
and you  have the boot up drives you expect.  Then as root run
lilo from the command line.  That should be all there is too
it.

Re: [expert] Re: [newbie] SMP Support

2000-05-02 Thread Don

I was very successful in installing Mandrake 7.0.2 on my BP6 on the HDE drive.
Booted the CDROM, and followed instructions given for making the boot disk with
UDMA66 drivers, and installation went smooth.
My system has two drives on IDE3, one 20.5 GB, with NT4.0 and a 15.5 GB with
Linux. I boot Linux with Lilo as the default, and sometimes use NT4.0 for work
related booting from Lilo.
