[expert] Problems with gcc 3.0
Hi, I'm running mdk 8.1 with all the update made. I have tried to install gcc3.0. But I think I have done something wrong (sure). I have uninstalling gcc2.96 and after I have had to install gcc3.0 with --force because I had problems with deps. After that, some simple c++ program made with kdevelop doesn't compile because configure doesn't found system type. Also, another program that worked before update to 3.0 now says this: checking for c++... (cached) c++ checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables. If I make a new C++ project and I copy my old files, I can run configure, but I have these errors, g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I.. -O2 -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -c IO-values.cpp IO-values.cpp: In function `void readrobot(char*, robochain*)': IO-values.cpp:46: `cout' undeclared (first use this function) IO-values.cpp:46: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.) [expert] Configuring a printer, cups, etc. It's begining to be a classic
Hi, well, I can print. I don't have any problems with the permissions, queues, etc. The question is what I print. I have a normal, standard, classical hp 520. I was very happy when I knew that there's another drivers with a lot of options, the hpdj. I can configure my printer with the hpdj driver. I can print... the question is that I print at 200% of the size of the document. I have tried to configure the lpoptions, configure with kups, with localhost:631, nothing of nothing. I can print with the classic dj500 driver, but with strange margins. Any ideas, Best regards, Leo -- Leopold Palomo Avellaneda Linux User 152692 Catalonia Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

The qt2-devel is installed. I have tried to make a link in the /usr/include/qt with the qvaluelist.h file, and well, the kfontinst doesn't make the error of the missing the file, but shows anothers errors, probably because it's not the same file. Hi, first off all, I write to you too, directly because the topic was posted a lot of days before. It's just a little question. I had installed mdk 7.1 till now that I have the 7.2. When I was using the 7.1 I compiled a litle program, kfoninst without problems. I didn't have any QT Professional Edition or similar. Now, I have the 7.2, and I have tried to compile the same program, and the error (qvaluelist.h) was the same. I thought that I didn't have instaled the qt1.44, but no, so I don't know what about it. Oh, oh, oh. It seams that have been a controversial thread Well, I think that I was a bit bare in my message. Dear Mark Polsen, thanks for your answer, but I have read the file README file at ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/distribution/2.0RC2/rpm/Mandrake/README and of course that it says that the only dependency problem is Mandrake_Desk and menu. But, if you want to install menu, it says: [root@hoth kde]# rpm -i menu-2.1.5-41mdk.i586.rpm error: failed dependencies: rpm >= 3.0.5-22mdk is needed by menu-2.1.5-41mdk libbz2.so.1 is needed by menu-2.1.5-41mdk And after to trying to install install rpm-3.0.5-26mdk.i586.rpm, [root@hoth kde]# rpm -i rpm-3.0.5-26mdk.i586.rpm error: failed dependencies: libbz2.so.1 is needed by rpm-3.0.5-26mdk menu < 2.1.5-29mdk conflicts with rpm-3.0.5-26mdk So, I'm sorry, but I'm not very happy. [expert] A database question
Hi, I think, o I have read in some place, that a database management, works very well (it's designed for it) inserting registers in the tables, or modifying registers, or selecting registers, ... but always with registers. Another operations, as modifying tables are available, but it's better do it only one time, and not touch the design of the table. I comment it, because someone have propose me, a way to implement a program with a database and one goal of the database is instead of inserting registers, is to add fields in a table. I ask if this methodology of work, is correct or not. I don't have sufficient knowledge to evaluate it, but I think that no, that it's bad way. I have tried to put the udf before the iso9660 in the filesystem file, but it works in the same way. Any suggestions? Re: [expert] I hang up my linux box
Thanks for the answer. The question is that when I say hang up, I'm saying the I cannot do anything. I have tested the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the X, but the answer was nothing. However, I have to admit that I didn't test the Ctrl-Alt-F1 option. I would try the next time. But, I think that the kernel isn't alive. Dear Klar Brian I'm sorry for write this email later, because I have read that you installed all again. Otherwise, I don't know if it could be helpful to you. Sometime ago, I had a problem with the mtab file. I edited it. You didn't realize that have make a great error, but, the machine will not boot. As Charles Curley said "You should never, ever, edit /etc/mtab. That is entirely mountd's sandbox. Leave it alone.". The little solution is to boot and in the lilo write: init=/bin/bash then the machine boots, and you have a shell. After, you have to edit the fstab, but the / partition is mounted is ro, so you have to remount the partition mount -n -o remount, rw / the important parameter is the -n. It does that the mount program doesn't write the mtab file. You cannot mount or remount, because the mount try to write the mtab file and it cannot do it. Re: [expert] Strange problem with the users with Samba
Bill Shirley ha escrit: > I don't see anything wrong with your share, but I don't understand it > either. If "produ" is the only user that can access this share, why worry > about user and group attributes? Well, it's a bit complicated. I will try to explain the situation. I have a linux box that works as a ftp server where a Xerox Docutech 135 is attached. Yes, a photocopier (a big photocopier, for mass production) uses the linux box as a "box" to save the jobs, and do it by ftp. Manage the files and the folder with the photocopier is slow, and annoying. As the people at work only knows M$ Windows I did a system that the people manage the jobs from a win box using samba to manage the files in the directory of the docutech. The problem was that from the win box I don't have any problems, but if I try to delete a job from the docutech (that had been created or copied from windows/samba) I cannot because the file has root owner. It's worried because I think that is a security hole because samba writes a file using root where the config say that has to be docutech owner. Produ is a normal user in the linux box that only use the samba and has a entry in /etc/passwd. And /home/users/docutech is the home directory of the docutech user and ../fitxers-docutech a normal directory of docutech home directory. And the cat /etc/smbusers Unix_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name2 ... root = administrator admin nobody = guest pcguest smbguest Well, thanks a lot. Hi, I have installed at work Mdk 6.1 with the Samba 2.05a. Everything works normally but I have realised of one big problem. I have a directory shared with the windows users and in the smb.conf I have a selected an option that say the force user = x for that share. Howeber, it does't have this behaviour and change the user to root. I think that it can be a security hole, and I need help to solve this. Please, any ideas. Leo Best regards. Pd. I don't have tested that option to upgrade to the 2.07 version. In mdk 7.1 the version is older that the new (I think) and I would like to know if I will have problems upgrading it. Thank's. begin:vcard n:Palomo;Leopold x-mozilla-html:TRUE adr:;;Catalonia version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] x-mozilla-cpt:;-29952 fn:Leopold Palomo end:vcard

I have installed the man pages in several languages. I have modified the /etc/man.config with various path in the order that I want and always use the english version (I have add the /usr/man/es) . Re: [expert] Matrox G400 and XFree86 4.0
Hi, There's an article in the Linux-Magazine of february 2000 written by Lou Grinzo explaining step-by-step how to configure the Millennium G400 Dual Head. I think that the article can be get-it online in www.linux-mag.com because is a old magazine. If not you can wait a few months that they will put it, or go to a library. I read the article some time ago, and now reviewing it I remember that maybe the solution was with a commercial X server, but I don't know, so check it. Re: [expert] Palm pilot
Dear Wayne, I think that the problem is with the ports that you have selected. Stephen Bosch put a special point that I have suffered with the ports. So, if you use it as a user, you have to pay attention with the permissions of the port. There's an special part on the kpilot help that say this: > Pilot Device: This is the serial port that the cradle is connected to. By default it is set to /dev/pilot which should be a symbolic link to the proper serial port. Make sure the serial port has the correct permissions. It must be read/write by all if KPilot is intended to be used by a normal user! This is done by doing a chmod 666 /dev/ where '' is the correct serial port.> I use Mandrake 7.0 and I have used ttySx and cuax and both of them have worked. Otherwise, dear George Czerw, if you let me say this, I don't want to be unpolite or similar, and everybody can do everything they do (with a respect with the others) but I think that is better that the solutions of the problems in the list were public with the list, because another people can read the solutions and maybe use it in the future. I have solved several things only reading the things that the other people have written. I'm sure that you have point this with all of your good intention, but if you write between you in this (of course that you can write between you in everything that you want) the others don't know solutions or betters solutions. As the other people have said I prefer jpilot vs kpilot, however kpilot has a import feature of address book that jpilot doesn't have. Jpilot but has a printer feature of some things. Lamentably I have to confess that many things I have to do it with the windows software that comes with the pilot. It's a pity that the 3com people doesn't include a linux/unix of their software with the hardware, but well, ..non comment. I hope that my comments can help in something. Thank's a lot to Charles and Lars. Well, finally I could read from the tape. Charles, it was the rewind question. The problem is that the information is stored in a lot of files with index etc and well it's my problem and thank's a lot for all. Re: [expert] How to read a 8mm tape with xerox docutech files
Thank's alot to Charles, Lars and Ronald J., Tomorrow I will try to do all of your ideas, but Ronald J, I did the tar command, and I only obtain one file. Charles, I don't understand very much how to avoid the rewind option. I can access to the devide with the mt command, moreover, I have to do it, because I found in one page that you have to put "mt setblck 0" (I have read that is a safe option) and after this I can read the device. I tried to move with the count value (with mt) but I didn't optain anything. Probably I didn't do it well, you have to think that is the first time that I try to do it without any manual. The tape with the docutech machine works fine, I try to do something not documented (that I know). Lars, why the 64 value? and how I know the long of the data? Tomorrow I will try the tell option. In two days I will explain my adventures. [expert] How to read a 8mm tape with xerox docutech files
Hi, I need to recover information from a 8mm tape (8200 ...) write by a Xerox Docutech 135 and I don't know how to do exactly. Talking with xerox people they said that the information is stored with a normal unix tar. I can read a file but it only has the volume description of the tape. So I don't know how to access the other information. I don't know if I have to change the partition, counts, etc. All of tapes is new for me. I can do a cat /dev/st0 > file.tar and recover the volume descriptor but nothing more. Any ideas, has anybody suffered a similar problem? Thanks a lot for the information. I'm sure that it will be useful. However, maybe we would have to send this information to the maintainer of the sb64 kernel driver. [expert] A SBawe64 question
I have a two stupid problem with my SB awe64 isa PnP card, and really I don't have idea how to resolve it. The first one, it's very funny (at the beginning, now it's bored) that sometimes (usual, but not every time good thing, eh!!) when I boot my computer, and the modules midi and sound have been loaded, there's an explosion (a sound, not my computer, but it sounds like it). In the beginning, I said, ok, not problem, but now, I'm tired the listen it!!!. Really I don't know what it's. When I boot from windows, there's no explosion, so I don't think that it's a hardware problem. The second bored problem is the volume. I always lost my configuration of the volume, so every time that I boot the computer I have to regulate the volume. The problem is that always is to high, and I'm a bit worry for my family. However, the card works "normal", and I have sound with all my kde, x, gnome, console applications. I have tried to use the mixctrl program, but there's no man entry. So, any ideas?? [expert] A rescue CD
Hi, I would like to make a cd-rescue. It would be a cd with a simple instaled system that you can have, and if you have problems with your computer, you can boot from there and repair, or recover, or everything. In msdos you could make a boot floppy with ddn, or some kind of utilities to help you. The question is make something similar, but from cd. I don't know if it is posible (I think that yes) or practical, or if it's worthwhile. Any idea how to do it? It has to be a boot cd. Re: [expert] IDE-SCSI & Other Devices
Well I think that the problem is that you have reordered the ID devices, so your link files are wrong because they point to the wrong devices. If you do a: cat /proc/scsi/scsi you will have the devices that are ok. But the question is change in the dev directory the link files that you have. This things maybe can help you. Howeber, I'm not sure that it can help you because maybe the problem is another. Also, I don't understand why do you have to put the insmod instruction in the rc.local, because when you needed it, the kernel will do it. Thank's a lot Civileme, it really works ok now. But I don't understant why the same distribution works in some machines but in mine no. I think that one easy way to use an IDE CD-RW is doing the scsi emulation. In the sources of the x-cdroast (www.xcdroast.org) there's a file README.Atapi where explain a way to configure it. I use it for my cdrom Atapi and for all the programs, and if I make a "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" it shows as my cdrom was and scsi. I'm sure that the references that RRPotratz have wrotten are very useful. Not for your problem explicity, but interesting in general about it, I would only add the wonderful generic faq about CD-R/CD-RW www.fadden.com/cdrfaq. There's a lot of information about cdr. [expert] kfm hang up only with mandrake
Hi, I have a strange problem with kde. My computer is PII266 128Mb, 13 Gb IDE,.. nothing expecial. I have several partitions of my hard disk, and one of them are a typical win95 in hda1. My root partition is hda5. My problem is that ONLY with Mandrake distribution (I have tested it with corel and suse) if I open window with kfm and I open where my win95 partition is mounted, I hang up kfm!!!. I have to ctrl + alt + back to reset the X session to returns a normal operation. The more interesting thing is that I can work without any problem with that partition with gnome, or kruiser, but with kfm not. Any ideas??? Re: [expert] Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest - Redefined
About problems with modifing mtab I did a simple solution. I had a problem for modifing the mtab file the file that you NEVER have to touch. I modified it, and when I tried to reboot my linux box but unfortunately when the boot hangs on: Setting /boot/System.map to the current running kernel The easy way that I found was a thing that Luis Palomero and Colin Watson puts on a comp.os.linux.setup and was this. Boot the linux box and write when the lilo boots: linux (or the name of your kernel) init=/bin/bash #after check your partition e2fsck -C -c -p -v /dev/(your / partition) #remount / with -n option mount -n -o remount,rw / #delete the mtab file and reboot. With this few steps I resolved my similar problem. The next thing you have to do is write on I paper 1000 time as I did "I will never touch the mtab file" ;) Leo begin:vcard n:Palomo;Leopold x-mozilla-html:TRUE adr:;;Catalonia version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] x-mozilla-cpt:;-29952 fn:Leopold Palomo end:vcard
