I have been told that this was a kernel bug,no explanation for the
assigning of mount points the next time I rebooted in spite of hitting
cancel to the config tools,Once I manually editted fstab and deleted
excess mount points it has been ok.

Once I got k3b to point to the first reader and the first burner it
works ok for me with a toshiba reader and a Toshiba DVD/CDRW, even thogh
it shows 6 of each and I can't seem to remove any of the nonexistant

What about the controller and cable. If the contoller will only go to
ATA 66 that's the fastest the drive can be set.UDMA2 is the fastest
setting that could be used withoput the newer 80 wire cable,so if your
cable is the 40 wire version or has a bad connecion it would also cause
the reduced speed. HTH

Sorry that is a little vague,I don't know of any specific exploits but
Procmail can run any arbitrary shell 0r Perl script which will default to
the privileges procmail has.So if you are running procmail as root,by
default you give root privileges to any scripts called by your recipes.
So the issues are the generic ones you have anytime a text based
configuration can be used to grant root privileges to an arbitrary
script.I do run procmail as root on one box at home to scan & despam my
wifes mail before it goes to a pop3 server for pickup by her windows thing.

If you want to use procmail globally you need to put procmailrc in
/etc.It will run as root so there are security issues. You can still use
a .procmail in each users home directory for personal customization.

IMHO most spam has bogus headers, so You would probably be helping them
spread the spam farther. If you're sure it's spam /dev/null is a nice place
to send it.

If you try to go directly from a turntable to aux in on the sound ,you will
probably need to use a special preamp. The frequency response recorded to vinyl
is nonlinear to avoid overcuting the ridges at lower frequencies. The output
of most turntables is also extremely low voltage for most aux level
inputs. If the turntable is connected to an amp or receiver, that should
all be taken care of by the phono input and you can use either aux out
or record out to connect to aux in on the sound card.

I don't think you need to escape the "." in the address
and it may be seeing the {2} as a nesting block. In man procmailex are
some examples for catching duplicate mails.Although I don't know if they will do

On My system there is also a file named /var/lock/LCK..ttyS0

If You're using a com port other than com1 you need to change the
DEVICE setting to match the com port actually used . If you're
connected to com1 and there is anything else configured to use com1
that may prevent apcupsd from locking the port for it's exclusive use.

If step one was true then the copy will be made as the target file does
not exist
>
> By my understanding the -u flag says 'only if it is a later version'.
for later version substitute more recent modification date.

It looks like the flow for this script is:
working file = /home/anne/
backup = /Data/Backup
archive = .bak

1: change working file
2A: script runs: backup and archive have the same modification date no
change
2B: working file is modified more recently than backup so copy working file to backup
3A: next time script runs: backup has been modified more recently than
archive so move backup to archive
3B: since backup no longer exists the working file is again more recent so copy working
file to backup even if working file has not changed.

So once all of the files exist, the script has to run twice for each
change before copies are no longer made.

Go to the Makefile in the src directory /usr/src/2.4.19-16mdk/Makefile
and remove the custom from 16mdkcustom in the EXTRAVVERSION line. If you
do rebuild the kernel later you need to remember to change this line
again or you'll overwrite all of your existing modules etc.I've
discovered that overwriting these modules makes it a little difficult to

configuration script for colortail looks for both regex and gnuregex so
the error message about no gnuregex won't stop the compile.Under
Mandrake8.2 I did have to add a couple of explicit includes
in main.cc and <#string.h> in Colorizer.h. After I added those it
compiled fine.

You might look at the Linux Taper.

It has some support for IDE drives and uses multiple tapes

There is some good info on setting up a mail system at the Mandrake users org site
,which I
can't get to right now,.There is a postfix web site at www.postfix.org,I remember the
mailing list as very busy and lots of rtfm, but the info was good.Fetchmail has a
configuration utility that works & is easy to use.I really don't remember a single
howto or
FAQ that was notable for me.The mail admin howto on the Linux Documentation Project
doesn't even mention Postfix but may still be worth reading for the overview.Postfix
was
written as a drop in replacement for Sendmail and does the same job.I hope some of
this
helps.

I have postfix on Mandrake 8.2 at home and it was a non-chroot install
by default.
Do you have fetchmail set up to translate from your isp address to the
user that postfix is looking for? If your local address and your ISP
address are not the same check the headers to see which "From" & "
Reply To" addresses are being used. When I first set fetchmail-postfix-
procmail-mutt up it took me several tries to get all the routing headers
set to something the rest of the world could find. I still haven't gotten
around to setting up an email system on my home LAN so i can't help
with that.

The default installation now appears to be chrooted and you need to
check the configuration setup for a chroot environment rather than a
standard setup.I don't think postfix can see anything in /etc so
everything Postfix needs has to duplicated in /var/spool/postfix/etc. More
secure but more setup needed.

You won't have the /var/spool/postfix/etc directory unless you're running

The default root directory for Apache is now /var/www/html, If you want to use
a directory that is not under that tree , you need to either put a symbolic link
in that directory that points to the one want use or change the DocumentRoot
setting in /etc/httpd/conf/commonhttpd.conf.If you change the DocumentRoot
setting it affects the entire directory tree that apache uses & may have
unanticipated side effects so I'd recommend using a symbolic link.

I did have group permissions on the ttys showing as write permitted but I
haven't found out where it's getting set at.The umask is handled by mandrake
Security and should be set to 022 if I'm reading the file right.the group tty
appears to have a default permisions setting of 700 .This is a new area for
me so it will probably take me some time to chase it down.I tried manually
changing the permissions on a console that was already logged in and it had
no effect but I'm not sure at what point the console permissions are
checked.I do thank you for the info. You might set up a script to login the rest
of the consoles after you log in to the first one and start it from .bashrc so it
would come up as soon as you logged in and prompt for what terminal you
wanted root on and what terminals you wanted a user on.It would seem to be
a security risk if you're on an exposed network so you would have to be
careful how the passwords were handled.

[expert] weird less problem

2001-09-11 Thread Ray Warren

I'm running mandrake 8 on an older motherboard with a pentium mmx
200mhz and 98 MB of memory.After I upgraded to a generic 2.4.9 kernel I
found that if I attempted to use less as a normal user, with a filename as
input, the only output I receive is ESC[14;30] and Lines 1-1/1(END).If the
input is a pipe it works ok.If I log on as root, either from a login screen or su -
l, it works ok.If I use su only it does not work.If the file is a compressed one I
I get alternating blocks of gibberish and ok listing. The only difference in the
enviro settings (from env) is the inclusion of sbin in root's path.I downloaded
the source for less & compiled it and get exactly the same response.Does
anybody have any suggestions as to where I should be looking,or what i
should be looking for.The profile and bashrc files only differ in the umask
settings and in sbin in roots path.I get this behaviour from the command line
and from a terminal in X.

You have got to be kidding! I am running Mandrake 6.1 ans 7.0 and
I have 12 ips on one card on both machines. These are both production web and
ftp servers.

[expert] Printing to windows 98

2000-01-26 Thread Ray Carlino

I am trying to print to a windows 98 share using samba from a Mandrake 7.0
machine. The printer is a HP 720c. I ran drakeconf and setup the printer but
nothing ever gets to the printer or win98 queue. I have done the sane thing
with ver 6.1 to a HP laserjet printer and everything worked just fine. Is it
the printer driver or is there a problem with 7.0?
