[expert] Support for Wireless PCMCIA NIC's in 8.1?

Is there any support for wirless lan cards - specifically pcmcia ones -
built into 8.1? I'm really waiting on this feature alone so that I can get
my Thinkpad up and running with Mandrake.

FW: [expert] Mandrake Freq: Aurora Prevents Boot

2001-07-09 Thread jlemay

Unfortunately Aurora fails to time out on these hangs and instead leaves
the console in an apparently "stuck" state. While Aurora does a nice job
of making startup "pretty", it seems rather lacking in function and
recovery. One issue that concerned me was that while Aurora indicated
that it was waiting for nmbd to start, a quick "samba status" from
another machine (fortunately sshd had already started) showed that both
smbd and nmbd had started properly.

Is there some method - other than DrakConf - to disable Aurora in cases
like this? For example, what if I didn't happen to have X installed on
my 7.2 server or I didn't happen to have Exceed on my Win2K laptop?
Chances are, I would still be stuck at the Aurora login screen. Does
failsafe prevent Aurora from starting?

Sorry for all the questions - I was unable to install 8.0 and while Freq
is a development image, I would hate to see 8.1 end up with some real
functionality issues such as these. For all of my "semi-techie" friends
that want to try Linux, I would push them to either LM72 or RH71 right
now. I would like to be able to recommend Freq or 8.1!

== Original Message ==

Aurora is closely linked to initscripts and will hang when things are
changed
in them, and there is usually a lag until Aurora is modified to catch
up.

RE: [expert] Mandrake 8.0 and aic7xxx

2001-06-12 Thread jlemay

I did, sort of. It turns out that the version of the aic7xxx driver used
during the installation of LM8 is incompatible with many - if not all - SCSI
cdroms. I ended up replacing the cdrom with an IDE unit and the install ran
without timeouts. The install time went from about 6 hours down to about 20
minutes.

As I understand, the version of aic7xxx used in the LM8 2.4.3 kernel that is
installed does not have this problem, nor do the later kernels (I think Alan
incorporated the fix in 2.4.3ac-something). Supposedly you can switch back
to the SCSI cdrom post install. I've also since found out that installing a
physical terminator on the narrow chain (where the cdrom is) also helps fix
this problem in some setups. Also, make sure your adapter is at the latest
bios level. This problem reportedly happens more often in older adapters due
to a backwards-comaptibility issue between old and new BIOS' from Adaptec.

However, I had such a horrible time with LM8, I've since gone back to LM7.2.
If 8.1 doesn't come soon and prove (a) easier to burn to CD and (b) more
stable than 8.0 I'm considering moving back to RedHat or possibly to SuSE.
This is not the first time I've had SCSI related problems on LM.

[expert] Mandrake 8.0 and aic7xxx

2001-06-05 Thread jlemay

So far I have had no luck with Mandrake 8.0 - in fact, I can't even get a
good install.

My machine is configured with a couple of Seagate U2W disks and an Adaptec
2940U2W controller. I've been reading everything I can find on the problems
with 2.4.3 and aic7xxx the past few days, unfortunately I haven't found a
solution.

I have flashed the bios on the 2940U2W to the latest from Adaptec, however I
am still seeing the "abort" messages. Specifically:

scsi0:0:1:0: Command found on device queue
aic7xxx_abort returns 8194
scsi0:0:1:0: Attempting to queue an ABORT

These loop about every time my CDROM (Toshiba SCSI 40x) is accessed.

I tried creating a boot disk from one of the alternative images provided on
the 'Drake8 install CD, but I only get to the initial boot GUI (just beyond
the press Enter / press F1 option) and I receive a "boot failed" message.
I'm guessing something isn't seeing the CDROM?

Can anyone provide some insight here? Three days without my primary machine
has been rather annoying. Perhaps I need to try another boot disk image or
should I just wait for 8.1?

Help!

Doesn't fvwmx use .rc files for menu defs? I'm almost certain it is a
menu only system with no true desktop environment (therefore no desktop
on which to place
icons).

I'm not familiar with the adapter or driver, and the messages don't look
familiar either. However, I had major SCSI problems with 'Drake 6.1 and

I'm not sure in which of two places the problem lies. First, if you
cannot login at all via ftp or telnet, check /etc/inetd.conf and (I
think) /etc/services to make sure these apps are available. If they are
enabled and you cannot login as root (which is highly likely), you can
telnet in as a normal user and "su" to root. I'm not sure how to solve
this issue for ftp access.

You may want to consider installing ssh (OpenSSH for a business
environment - I believe that one is free for commercial use) and using it
instead of telnet since data will be encrypted as it passes over the
network. With telnet all data - passwords and all - are sent in clear
text. Again, I don't know much about ftp. However, a quick search on
freshmeat may turn up some secure ftp client/server.

One last tip if you are using Windows clients to telnet or ssh into your
*nix servers, check out CRT as a replacement for telnet or SecureCRT for
a ssh client for Windows. It's an excellent terminal app - much better
than Windows telnet!

Sam,

Grab a copy of Mandrake 7.1 and you should be fine. I had a similar
problem with any version of Mandrake earlier than 7.0. Apparently the
SCSI driver has a problem with either the newer adapters (I'm going to
guess a 2940U2W or 29160) or the LVD drives, or both. In my case, the
install would hang while detecting the devices, almost as if the chain
was not terminated. Hitting "ALT-4" would show exacly what was happening
after the SCSI module was loaded.

Of course, make sure you do have a terminator made for LVD/SE attached to
the last position on the cable connecting the wide (68 pin) chain, and
that you have enabled Term power on the drives on the wide chain. Also,
double check that your narrow side is properly terminated by enabling
termination on the last device on the chain. (Last device always refers
to the last physical device, regardless of the SCSI id assigned to the
devices.)

Something I've never tried, but what if you don't specify a wm/de in

[expert] Printing via SMB Stopped Working

2000-06-26 Thread jlemay

I'm not sure if this belongs on the Samba list, but I thought I'd start
here first since I subscribe to this list.

I installed 7.1 about a half week ago. During the install I setup my
printer - an HP1120C hanging off a Windows 98 box (I know, I know.) - as
a SMB attached printer. I've given the config tool the name of the box,
the ip address of the box (name is resolved fine, ip address is static),
and the correct queue name. This worked perfectly for the test print and
for a couple of days after.

About two days ago, I noticed that I could no longer print. The Win98 box
seems to be working fine, as I can print from another Win98 machine on
the net. I even went so far as to try using the CLI to SMB, smbclient,
and connected to the resource and sent an ASCII file to the printer.
After two attempts, the first line of the print job spewed out of the
printer for the last attempt.

I've tried removing the queue and recreating it, however that has not
helped. I recall that the printer stopped working around the same time I
installed StarOffice 5.1 (I'm on 56K dialup, so I haven't downloaded 5.2
yet). Could SO have messed up something? Does it alter anything in lpd or
something of the sort? The printcap file seems intact, as do the files
in /var/spool/lpd/lp (the printer is setup as "lp").

FWIW, this is acting just like the printer problems I've had in 7.0, 6.1,
and my days with RedHat 4.x, 5.x, and 6.0. As hard as I've tried, I've
never been able to solve this type of problem, probably because I don't
know where to start troubleshooting. Oh, I did define the two debug var's
in /var/spool/lpd/lp/filter, however it doesn't look like the print jobs
are making it that far since the output file in never created in /tmp.

Help!

[expert] Window Manager Menus

2000-06-21 Thread jlemay

Hi,

Can someone provide me with a link to some info on how the new menu
system works? I read the doc I found in (I think) /usr/doc, but I'm still
a bit lost. FWIW, I'm moving from a machine that has been running Window
Maker for a couple of years (since the 0.18 days)using the old menu
style - a flat file in ~/GNUstep/Default/WindowMaker - and now I'm not
sure how to migrate my old menu settings over to the new system.

I like the fact that menus are consistent across window managers, but I
am looking for an easy method to manipulate them. Since this isn't
necessarily Window Maker specific, I thought I'd post here first instead
of to the wmuser list.

Thanks!

It's important to know that this is NOT enabled by default on the Seagate
drives I had. In fact, the tech that setup the hardware (incorrectly) at
first did not enable this, nor did he use LVD cables, terminators, etc. I
guess the point is that most of today's techs that are assembling
hardware know little about SCSI, and know even less about newer
incarnations of SCSI. I know I've learned a great deal, and I've been
working with SCSI for upwards of 6 years

This depends on what you want to do. To access a file share, and assuming
you have the Samba client installed, smbclient //server/share -Uuser
password is, I believe, the proper syntax. This opens an ftp-like
interface (console based) to the server for the purpose of transferring
files.

For browsing, you still need the Samba client package, however you will
also need one of the "Network Neighborhood" clones written to provide a
GUI interface to smbclient.

Hope this helps!
