Re: [expert] Real Player / Firebird 0.6.1 / Mandrake 9.2
Thanks Artemio. Actually this is more complicated than I thought - Yes it is Real Player. When I run it standalone, it can't see the net, and can't load any of the channels from its menu. (Yes, the network settings in its options appear to be sane, except that I'm attempting to do this over a modem...) I know it can't see the net since when I run the wizard to check for the best connection type, it thinks I have a firewall. I don't. Are there ports which should be specifically opened that aren't by default? If so, which, and how? BUT, when inside firebird, it can run movies from real.com (the website). That's the only site out of several which works. As a test, could you maybe post a site from which real movies work for you, so I can check? Do you have RealOne or RealPlayer8? When I had RealPlayer 8 - mozilla/firebird worked great with it - click on a realmedia link and it plays in realplayer. But then I upgraded to RealOne and got the same thing as you - it fires up, but doesn't do anythings. Then I got back to RP8 and it works fine again ever since with all mozillas I ever had. Get a RP8 instead of RealOne if that's your case. I can send you a link or a RP8.tar.bz2 itself if you want. Artemio. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Does any of you know how to solve this problem? Thanks. Fabian.

Re: [expert] Real Player in Mozilla - what about flash?
What I want to know is how to make the shockwave flash plugin work with mozilla (or konqueror for that matter). I have the latest shockwave flash netscape plugin in /usr/lib/netscape/plugins and it is, apparently, invisable to konqueror. I also copied it to /usr/local/mozilla/plugins but it doesn't work. Netscape 6 does not ship with any predefined helper applications (i.e., mime types). You must manually configure Netscape 6 to recognize RealMedia files (.ra, .rm, .rv, .ram, .rpm). After you manually configure Netscape, RealPlayer will start and play the file when you click a RealMedia link on a web page. To manually configure Netscape 6 to recgonize RealMedia files: 1. Start Netscape 6. 2. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences. 3. Select the "Helper Applications" category. 4. Click New Type. In the New Type dialog box, enter the following: Description of type: RealPlayer File File extension: .ra, .rm, .ram MIME type: audio/x-pn-realaudio 5. Click Choose and locate Realplay.exe (by deafult, C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe). 6. Click OK. Repeat steps 4-6 for each of the following file types: Description of Type: RealAudio File Extension: .ra, .ram MIME Type: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio Description of Type: RealVideo File Extension: .rv MIME Type: video/vnd.rn-realvideo Description of Type: RealMedia File Extension: .rm MIME Type: application/vnd.rn-realmedia Description of Type: RealAudio File Extension: .rpm MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin 7. Close Netscape and restart Windows. 8. Start Netscape. 9. Click the Edit menu and choose Preferences. 10. Select the "Helper Applications" category. 11. Click "audio/x-pn-realaudio" in the File types window. 12. Click Edit. 13. Click to clear the "Ask me before opening downloaded files of this type" check box. 14. Click OK. Repeat steps 11-14 for each of the file types below: audio/vnd.rn-realaudio (RealAudio File) video/vnd.rn-realvideo (RealVideo File) application/vnd.rn-realmedia (RealMedia File) audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin (RealAudio File -- Sword'sEdge VoiceMail/Fax: (858) 860-6406 x1587

Hi Traci, I checked and realplayer was set on automatic, no UDP. I changed it to use specific transports and looked at it and it was already set to TCP only. I have left it there, instead of auto. Re: [expert] Real PLayer
Have you setup RealPlayer to use TCP exclusively? By default Realplayer will sometimes attempt to use UDP for connections because it does less handshaking and may therefore stream more effectively. If you have any trouble between you and the site you are connecting to the lack of handshaking can keep your connection from functioning at all. Once Real told me to try out forcing my player to always use TCP the reliability of my connections went up dramatically. Something to try if you haven't already tried it. Traci "Werner E. Re: [expert] Real PLayer
Wonder if this is connected somehow to why I can't get a live stream from Live365.com? It apparently uses 'm3u' and 'pls' extensions on the live stuff. 'pls' was already in my xmms setup and I added in netscape the extensions to realplayer and it tries to open it but won't play anything but the realplayer 'theme' ...just can't get it to connect to the live365 stream. I have a direct link address for a weekly radio program that is live streaming on mp3 format (different site entirely) and go direct through xmms with no problem. And can get live radio broadcasts fine (that are not in the new media player format)...i.e. from Yahoo Broadcast. I am at a loss for how to do this as well. Bambi "Werner E. Re: [expert] Real PLayer
James, I agree with much of your accessment. OK here is the weird thing... When I upgraded to Mandrake 7.1 this only started happenning... Yesterday I tried to connect to Dr Dean Edel and then could not .. I quick rebooted and tried in Mandrake 7.0 (since I installed them on separte partitions) and I could reboot in 7.0... It seems to either be a Mandrake 7.1 problem or Netscape or something I had in configuration that got overwritten. Im trying to troubleshoot this but it only has a problem with real time streams... I can connect to businesstalkradio fine yet other sites I cant. Incidentally if I try to get Dr Dean archives it works fine.. Its only with some real time streams... Any additional advice you or anyone has would be appreciated. Thanks Werner James Sparenberg wrote: > Werner, > There could be a couple of reasons that you can't connect and they > aren't your fault. Re: [expert] Real PLayer
Werner, There could be a couple of reasons that you can't connect and they aren't your fault. Since you can connect to the one site that indicates that your set up correctly (however this could be a bad assumption on my part I really doubt if it is.) 1. Rush's site is so slow or overloaded at the time you are trying to connect that it's just taking forever for RPlayer to get the data it needs and it's timing out or freezing. 2. The webmaster at rushes site made a typo on the page and as a result it can't connect correctly. 3. Since realplayer for linux is in a state of perpetual beta testing it could be unable to connect due to some weird Windoze only feature the webmaster has enacted. 4. The people at Real.com are liberals and they have added software to block Rush. :) Hope this helps. [expert] Real PLayer
Hi there, I had real player working and dont know what is going on in 7.1. If I go to a site like www.businesstalkradio.net and try to listen it works fine with the streaming audio...When I go to something like www.rushlimbaugh.com it doesnt work... Real player executes and says "contacting" forever yet never gets the stream...Anyone out there know what the netscape file structure and plugins well enough to help me out diagnose what is wrong... Thanks Werner

[expert] Real Player G2 + LM 6.0
I downloaded and installed the (alpha?) G2 player for linux per the instructions on: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/software/realg2.html (I tried both the rpm and the installation binary) However, realplayer segfaults each time I run it (either from a link via netscape or just running /usr/bin/realplay). I read that this may be a libstdc++ issue, however, I wasn't able to find a resolution to the problem. realplay loads OK, but as soon as it starts playing audio it segfaults. I'm running LM 6.0 w/ a recompiled 2.2.10 kernel and libstdc++-2.9.0-3mdk. Any ideas? Thanks, Chris
