You can type control-alt-+ (the plus that's on the numeric keypad) to switch

I can't shed any light, but I can perhaps cheer you up a bit by telling
you that the same happens here.

I was going to demo tuxracer (and Linux) to my kids. I looked a right
idiot when it wouldn't work. I had carefully checked that it worked
fine, but had done so as root and then switched to an ordinary user for
the actual demo.

Needless to say, the kids weren't impressed.

[expert] tuxracer, continued problems

2002-01-02 Thread Ric Tibbetts

Ok, this is starting to irritate me. :)
I'm running a fresh re-install of 8.1
Tuxracer doesn't run as a regular user, only as root.
When I try to start it, as a regular user, it gets through the selection
menus. But when you select "race", it dies, and returns you to X, but in
300x200 resolution mode. I have to exit out of my session to get it to
reset.

When I run tuxracer from the command line (to watch for error messages),
I get the following:

Loading required GL library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.0
libGL: Application called unsupported GL API function.
Fix the application.

I'm running XFree86 v3.x (4.0 doesn't have the 3D accelerator for my
video card (ATI Rage Pro (MACH64))).
I'm loading GL in the config with:

Section "Module"
Load "glx-3.so"
EndSection

However: It runs fine as root. So there's a permissions problem
somewhere...
Can anyone shed some light on this one?

Thanks in advance

Good luck. I've got an ATI RagePro chipset card (agp), with 8 or 16 meg
(can't remember off the top of my head), and the best I can get out of
Tuxracer is 0.7 fps. If anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks to all who helped. The laptop I was messing with doesn't have 3d
graphics which explains why it wouldn't work there. My co-workers box
has an 8MB ATI 3d rageII+ pci card. The 8.1 installer loaded XFree4 by

Glx is not added to the X's config file. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(edit /etc/X11/XF86Config also just in case) and under the section,
module, write

Load "glx"

there is also Load "dbe" in that section, you better check that too.
Of course you need to restart your X windows.

I assume you installed things needed for glx, (things like mesa,
and/or your video adapter supports 3D and you configured it ).

Did you enable glx module in /etc/X11/XFree86-4 file?
Normally it looks like 'Load "glx"' in "Module" section, of course,
it requires your video card supporting GLX.

Yes, I know. I try to avoid using the "--nodeps" (and it's first cousin,
"--force" :-) when at all possible. In this case, tho, you were right.
It installed with no problems, and away it went.

I would have thought that the original "libGLcore.so.1" would have been
provided by the XFree86, and NVidia just replaced the original file with
a symlink to their customized, proprietary one. But I guess that's not
the case.

VERY cool graphic effects! :-)

Thanks.

Re: [expert] Tuxracer with NVidia drivers on Mandrake 7.2?

2001-05-26 Thread Haim Ashkenazi

Ok. a little lesson about RPM's. rpm has a database of all the files
that were installed in rpm format (not all the files on your system!).
so, when you try to install a new rpm it looks in this rpm's require
field and check weather it has all the required files in this database.
if it doesn't (like in your case, you didn't install libGLcore.so.1 from
rpm, you installed it from tar) it issues this warning about missing
dependencies. as I mentioned in my last reply, since you know you have
this file then you can install it with 'rpm --nodeps -ivh tuxracer...'.
the worse thing that could happen is that tuxracer won't run.

As a rule it's not recommended to do that. do it only if you really know
what you're doing, but in this case it's not a problem.

I never install NVidia's stuff from anything but tarballs. I have 3

compile a driver under each kernel version.

And it's all working; I can even run other GL based stuff ("gears" gives

Hi

did you install Nvidia's drivers as rpm or from a tar file? (just for curiousity, if
you installed it from rpm try 'rpm -qf /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1'). it doesn't really
matter, if that's the only thing missing then just install it with the 'nodeps'
option: 'rpm -ivh --nodeps '. although this is usually not recomended, if
you know you have the file that rpm complains about then you can use this option.

Re: [expert] Tuxracer with NVidia drivers on Mandrake 7.2?

Yeah, I've been fighting similar problems for weeks.
I have been trying to compile smpeg 4.2 or 4.3 and
they won't find GL. They always disable opengl
support because it cannot be found.

You might try compiling the nvidia drivers from
tar.gz. I was going to try that next. Most
applications work for me, but there are some (another
is the Sin video game) that are having a real hard
time with the nvidia drivers.

Any help with this would be GREATLY appreciated.

[expert] Tuxracer with NVidia drivers on Mandrake 7.2?

2001-05-25 Thread Michael Leone

Hey all

I downloaded tuxracer .61 SRC RPM from rpmfind.net (I had to use the RH
7.1 sources, since all the Mandrake sources groused about not finding
libSDL, even tho I did install it), and rebuilt it (Linux Mandrake 7.2).

Anyway, the RH7.1 RPM rebuilt fine, but I couldn't install it, since it
says

[root@minas-aran i686]# rpm -ivh --test tuxracer-0.61-2.i686.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libGLcore.so.1 is needed by tuxracer-0.61-2

Now, I have a Diamond Viper V770 graphic card; this is a NVidia TNT2
based graphic card. I'm running the latest 1.0-251 NVidia drivers, with
no problems, on XFree86 4.0.2. The NVidia GLX driver installation
removes the default libGLcore, and replaces it with their own.

I did a search, and found /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.

lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 21 May 19 22:00 libGLcore.so.1
-> libGLcore.so.1.0.1251*
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 3457056 May 19 21:59
libGLcore.so.1.0.1251*

(IOW, libGLcore.so.1 is a symlink to NVidia's replacement libGLcore)

And /usr/lib *is* in my ld.so.conf, so it should be found and linked.
And my XF86Config-4 does say load GLX, and does *not* say load "GLcore",
per NVidia's instructions.

So what can I do now? I've been thru NVidia's site, to no effect, nor
has a web search turned up anything useful.

I tried to start in X but got no response so went to the console to see what it
said. I got in touch with my buddy who finished the install and it turns out he
didn't enable hardware accelleration. He also gave me that missing root password
so today I'll enable hardware accelleration and add openGL to my X files.

Just to make sure I understand, you are starting tuxracer in X and not in the
console, right?

I'm running a Diamond Viper 550. I had to go to work and a buddy finished my
install so I don't know about the hardware acceleration check box. He also
didn't use my regular password for root so I can't change anything till I
contact him, I'll sneak in and install Windows on his Linux box for that.

I'm running an ATI 3d Rage Pro (detected at load time as a Mach64).
3D acceleration was offered, but for XFree86 3.x, not for 4.x
So I'm running under XFree 3.x
I'll check tonight about the GLx module. I'm not sure if it's loading or
not.

What video cards are you people using? Tuxracer works
perfectly with my GeForce2 GTS.

If you're using voodoo's try booting at runlevel 3 and
startx to get into X. Some people said that helped.
Other voodoo users said it helped to use xdm or gdm
instead of kdm to login with runlevel 5.

Tuxracer requires a hardware accelerated video card and the glx
extension loaded. You can load glx by adding the following line to
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in the module section:

  Load "glx"

When you installed MDK 8.0 you should have chosen the "Hardware
Accelerated" option when it asked whether you wanted to install
XFree 4.0.3 or XFree 3.3.6. If you weren't offered an "accelerated"
option, your card is not supported for hardware acceleration and
Tuxracer is going to be unplayable. If you card was accelerated in
the setup, the glx module *should* have been put in XF86Config-4 for
you.

Note: If you have an NVidia card, you can get the NVidia drivers from
NVidia.com and then install as per the readme and enable acceleration
on NVidia based cards. Once you install the rpms, add the load line
as mention above and change the driver from "nv" to "nvidia". NVidia
cards will not be offered an accelerated option during install,
choose XFree 4.0.3. NVidia cards include the TNT, TNT2, and GeForce*
chipset models made by various video board manufacturers.

As for joysticks, most *mainsteam* joysticks should work with Linux
including standard generics, MicroSoft SideWinders, Logitechs, Gravis,
CH products, etc... Getting them to work with games I've never really
tried though.

We need to know what video card you have to help you
with the GLX problem.

For joystick support, see the following site
(although, there may be something more current out
there.. I don't know):

Starts, and shows the opening screens, but when you select to race, or
what-ever from that opening screen, it crashes :(

[expert] Tuxracer

2001-05-24 Thread Randy Donohoe

I was going to let my girls play Tuxracer on a new install of Mandrake 8.0 and
it wouldn't start. I tried from the console and got the message: Xlib extension
"GLX" missing on display "0.0". tuxracer error: Couldn't initialize video:
Couldn't find matching GLX visual.
I also want to get the girls a joystick to use on the Linux box and haven't ever
been involved in gaming so I don't know which ones are compatible with Linux.
Any help appreciated.
