No, I didn't see it. Thanks for sending it on. I got LVG's though.
Before I saw this I had found an article on Gramofile through google,
so I've installed it. I'll also take a look at LV's suggestions of
audacity and rezound.

But the first need is to actually get the sound in. What can I use
that will give me some feedback as to whether it is actually hearing
anything? It's too time-consuming to keep attempting a recording
when you don't know whether there's anything there in the first
place.

I used rezound to edit stuff - its pretty awesome - keep in mind it works out
of the box with ogg but you'll have to install Lame to work with mp3s.

Oh - I used a component cassette player with right and left RCA jacks, via a
cable that ended in the 1/8 inch mini-plug needed for the line-in jack. With
aumix up, and line-in set to RED (which in this case means go, not stop) I
could hear the music playing, even before recording. You should be able to
hear the music you are feeding in, if not something is not turned
on/connected right.

The nice thing about gramofile is that it has filters to get rid of
the cracking noise of old records and that its track detection
algorithm works rather well. I was pleasantly suprised when I used it
to digitalize some old tapes. I'll probably do some LPs as well, or at
least some highlights, to get them to ogg-vorbis for "on the road"[0].
At home, LP still rules supreme.

When you use the line-in connection of your sound card, chances are
that you will be able to hear it in the speakers of your computer
already - it seems to be the default mixer setting on most systems. If
you don't fire up the mixer program of your choice (aumix, kmix, gmix,
to name but a few) and fiddle with the settings for line-in.
You'll need the mixer anyway with gramofile, to set a decent recording
level as to avoid clipping (=too hard) and noise (=to low).

Also, be aware that most standard PC sound cards don't produce very
high quality recordings. It's probably good enough for most things,
but if you're a very critical listener, don't expect the same level as
from really good HiFi equipment. I actually bought a Turtle Beach
Tahiti just for that purpose (quite cheap these days, as it's ISA),
which is great - very low noise and good Analogue to Digital convertors,
but depending on what you want to accomplish, that might be overkill...

You should have the output from vinyl player to go to line-in of your
soundcard. In sound mixer(like Kmix) you should select line-in for recording
purposes. If the speaker is connected to speaker/lineout port, then if you
play the player, you should get sound from speaker when the OS is working.
For this no sound s/w(playing or recording) need to run. If not then there is
problem with /dec/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp

Make sure your card is running full duplex if it can ... of course
the way they define full duplex really isn't but close enough. When
it's running this way it can take sound in write it to the hdd and play
it at the same time. So. If you hear it on the comps speakers it's
going in.

If you try to go directly from a turntable to aux in on the sound ,you will
probably need to use a special preamp. The frequency response recorded to vinyl
is nonlinear to avoid overcuting the ridges at lower frequencies. The output
of most turntables is also extremely low voltage for most aux level
inputs. If the turntable is connected to an amp or receiver, that should
all be taken care of by the phono input and you can use either aux out
or record out to connect to aux in on the sound card.

Now there's the rub - I don't hear anything. I hate to say the
dreaded line, but I used both card line-in and front panel line-in
under windows. Both line-in and line-in2 show up on the mixer

The Audigy card seems to do a reasonably good job, but thanks for the

Thanks, but I'm using the same physical connection setup that I used

Several ideas:
- Are the "mute" checkboxes unchecked? (Can't describe what they look
like, as I don't have a Linux machine here at the moment)
- Can you play wav/au files or hear sound when using xmms? If not,
also check "Mute" and volume settings on "Mixer" and "Main".
- On my MDK 9.1 box, I did have a very strange problem related to
this: I would only get sound if I put the volume not quite to 100%.
90% would be fine, while at 100% everything fell silent. It didn't
bother me enough to investigate this further, so I can't say what
exactly is going wrong there, but maybe it's something to try for

Right - this one gave me the clue. I had checked the settings in
aumix, but I hadn't realised that I needed to change the Rec to red -
should have done. However, now I can get sound easily with the aumix
line showing red. As soon as I change to rec I get sound, but with
what sounds like someone fast beating on woodblocks at the same time.
Any ideas on that one?

Partly found the problem - it was not using aumix to change which
channel is active. However, I've got wood-block beating along with
the sound when I change to rec.

Once I can get this sorted I'll short out the volume levels. The
front-panel input (audigy) is a lot less loud than the read panel
one, though obviously a lot more convenient.

Hmm, I know that on the SB live that I was using in my 10 yr olds comp;
I really, really had to turn the igain (I'm assuming thats "input gain"???) in
aumix way down. It defauts to 100, but I had to turn it down to 8-10 to avoid
clipping in gramofile.

Hi, DarkLord. OK - if I turn igain down to 0 I lose the noise, but
even 3 brings it back. I presume it is some sort of feedback, but I
don't know what's causing it.

Meanwhile, I had looked at Audacity and Rezound, but without success.
These are the error messages:

Rezound -
virtual void COSSSoundRecorder::initialize(CSound*)
-- error opening OSS device '/dev/dsp
 -- Device or resource busy

Audacity -
Error opening audio device
(Change the device in the Preferences dialog.)

/dev/dsp is the only entry in the Preferences dialog.

Any ideas?

before running Audacity and/or Rezound do the following

$killall artsd

That might get you going. Here's hoping kernel 2.6 and its built-in ALSA
support comes and wipes the old OSS Sound way of doing things off the planet
for good :)

Hi, DarkLord. OK - if I turn igain down to 0 I lose the noise, but

Anne;

I apologize for not remembering this sooner. Austin Acton has an article that
was posted on Desktop Linux and many other websites about building what he
terms a "Mandrake Audio Workstation." I've never found the time to read that
article, but I do have it on my personal to-do list. Eventually.

http://www.linuxdj.com/audio/lad/subscribelau.php3

is one of the links he has posted in the article. That's the mailing list for
the Linux Audio Users Group. Their home page is at:

http://www.djcj.org/LAU/guide/index.php

Austin's article is available from his homesite.

http://groundstate.ca/mdkaw.html

Hope this is of some help somehow. Audiophiles and those that work
continuously with sound recording, mixing, and editing will probably be a
better source of information than we on this list. I wish I knew enough about
the tools and processes to be of any help but that is, as they say, a project
for another day.

Anytime I get that error (it does happen a bit here also) as root, I do a:

lsof /dev/dsp

and that shows me what is holding on to it. This usually happens to me when
I'm trying to run a game and it starts with no sound. The single most common
villian is "artsd". I usually kill it, "killall -9 artsd" and then I get my
sound back.

Keep pluggin'! :-)

Charlie, it looks very useful. I'm away all day tomorrow and have to
prepare this evening, but I'll try to get to it on Friday.

I just dealt with a SBLive 5.1 on a friend's MDK 9.1 system, and I got the
best results by using the OSS driver (emu10k1), and enabling record within
aumix for the IGain channel *only*; this is a composite of the other input
sources, which can then be adjusted with their respective mixer controls.

This enabled his rear speakers to work, and the "OGain" control attenuated
the volume level for them thereafter. I found that IGain values of 30-40
gave optimal results on his setup, FWIW, but what mattered was that *that*
was the only control that had record set to "on"; a few other combinations
would lead to the clicking that Anne described. YMMV, HTH.

Come to think of it, I don't think I had anything else enabled either.

Anne, when you do get things sussed out, make sure you record a "snippet" in
Gramofile before you do the actual recording - that way Gramofile can show
you with its output how high the rec level is - it will output a summary of
how many times the recording went over the top. Adust to perfection, then
record your "for real" version. :-)

Thanks, both of you. I'm out all day tomorrow, but I'll try all this
again on Friday. I'll probably have to start by going over all the
emails again, to refresh my memory. I'll let you know what happens.

Great! I forgot to mention one thing. IF your soundcard won't do full
duplex (like my laptop) it will lock up the box (grrr)

For some reason trying to kill aRts that way didn't work. I went to
the link given earlier (sorry, can't remember who gave it to me)
http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS4543140457.html and started to
follow the instructions.

The key to the whole thing is to get a kickarts applet onto the
kicker. Once that is done you can stop and restart aRts at will.
With aRts disabled, Audacity runs. So far I have only tried it on a
burst of speech from the radio, but the resulting sound was quite
good.

The bad news is that neither Jackstart nor ardour will run on the
stock 9.1 kernel. Attempting to run ardour caused a spontaneous
reboot.

Shoudl ardour become necessary (and at this point I don't even know
what it is) I will have to boot to the MM kernel, which is as bad as
having to boot to windows.

Still, it looks as though after my holiday/vacation I can start
working on this. Thanks to all that have helped.

And yes, I will write a TWiki entry
