I was using a non-Mandrake version of Netscape. Problems with the upgrade led to a clean install of Air, which hosed the non-Mandrake RPM version of Netscape. Now that I've been using it for several weeks, the behavior does indeed seem to have stopped. /b Barry Marler Department of Parasitology and Medical Microbiology University of Georgia Athens, GA (706)542-0742 (706)542-0059 (fax)

Hi, If you can reproduce this every time it's because you use a netscape build for glibc-2.0 on a system using 2.1. You can fix it with netscape from Air (7.0) and compat-glibc & compat-libcs. With theses packages, this bug disappear. Regards, David BAUDENS -- Linux Mandrake http://www.mandrake.com/ --David

That covers it. The Java thing we all have been living with for a while. Its 4 that for me, is new, and bugging me the most.(BTW, wrote a little gdm postsession script that cleans up netscape processes after a user logout. So that at least reduces substantially the number of killalls I am doing per day.) Harshal

Hi again, Sorry for blinking off for a day. The campus router (which was the thing acting funny) finally went down. What do you mean by acting funny, Nope. Checked out the rest. The same even with Twm. As for the LAN, well we were either getting SUPER speeds or, suddenly, nothing at all. Thats all worked out now though. (I hope!) > are you useing a nfs exported /usr dir or the like? NFS exported /home Looks like we are going to have to live with this one :-( till Mozilla shows up. Re: [expert] Netsacpe problems
I'd like to add my observations on this bug of netscape. I've noticed a pattern to this one (I believe): The first netscape window opened is the "super-window". At any time, closing it kills all other windows without confirm. However, you can close any other window you want. My solution is to open netscape with a Direcotry listing as a homepage, then open new windows to do anything, I just never close the "root" window (which I slide away to a different desktop). Could anyone else try and verify my theory (LM 6.1 COmm 4.7). Maybe this is the same as Scenario 4, but at times netscape produces a zombie process. Re: [expert] Netsacpe problems
Using here KDE and closing NC normally...ie. exit. Funny thing happened, when installing 7.0,install program didn't do the job well, just left NC partly uninstalled, and when tried install it afterwards by hand there allways were some depecies that coudn't install...But I cleaned all NC stuff from LM and installed from LM 6.1 older 4.61 NC and that installation workedHaven't try update to 4.7...Nc works anyway,so much that I can spend too much time in net..according my phone bills. As someone wrote earlier,I have got help from this list before asked just much...biiig thanks. Main thing is,that have got LM working without any err reports in startup logs...thats something, which proves, that after short time LM is confirureable for everyoneComparing to myself...I'm not newbie...but let's say "expert -" By the way..LM is first distro where I have got hamradio stuff working with first try. So I guess it's nothing to do with the WM or graphical environment. Problem was with MDK 6.1 (Netscape-Comm 4.61) and now with MDK 7.0 and NC 4.7 it's the same. Nothing has changed. BTW, kernels 2.2.9, 2.2.13 and now 2.2.14-15mdk were(are) involved. Like Harshal wrote, it happens mostly when (as I have no LAN) the dialup is fuzzy. You read "Looking up foo.bar.com..." in status line of the browser and in xosview I see 96 to 100% CPUload and the MEM-bar going up. Then (once in a while) NC freezes (can even kill -9 it) but the CPUload still is up and memory gets eaten up constantly. Eventually it stops when you kill the ld-linux.so.2, so my very sure guess is, it's NC itself causing this, no matter what kernel or environment. wobo -- GPG Fingerprint 519E 2627 FE60 91F5 32AA 6862 CE9D 800A 3876 EF13 -- Linux Mandrake's Home: http://www.linux-mandrake.com ## LLaP (Linux Lovers are Perfect!) #
