First thing I thought of, too. Also try and avoid underscores ("_");
use a dash ("-") instead. Somewhere along the way, support for an
underscored changed, I'm told, altho have not personally experienced.

RE: [expert] SAMBA help PLEASE!!!

2001-12-13 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Windows logs into Samba utilizing the USERNAME and PASSWORD you enter
when Windows first comes up.

You must FIRST create "Linux" user accounts on your machine, using the
same naming.

Then use "smbpasswd -a USERNAME" for EACH Linux Account.

Also make sure that SAMBA and your Windows machines are members of the
same workgroup, (assuming you are not using Domains)... E.G. the
spelling must be the same all CAPS for safety.

Restart samba

"service smb restart"

Then try the logins locally on your Linux box...

"smbclient -L LINUX_BOX_NETBIOS_NAME -U WINDOWS_USER"

Where LINUX_BOX_NETBIOS_NAME is the Netbios name you gave your Samba
server in /etc/smb.conf and WINDOWS_USER, is the LOGIN NAME you use AT
YOUR WINDOWS MACHINE!

Samba should ask for a password.

Give it the same password you use at your windows machine.

If this works, reboot Windows and map to the Samba shares.

Have you set up a share for your windows users on the linux machine? And
have you a smbpasswd file and added the windows users in this file?

1. man samba

Robert,

Send me your /etc/smb.conf file, along with a summary of your network
setup, and I will see what I can do for you. I'm pretty good with Samba
integration into a Windows network. Feel free to change user names,
passwords, IP addresses, whatever, if you are concerned about security.
But if you change anything, be consistent, i.e., if you substitute
"john" for "dave" once, do it the same everywhere.

The correct way to punctuate a sentence that starts: "Of course it is
none
of my business, but --" is to place a period after the word "but."
Don't use
excessive force in supplying such a moron with a period. Cutting his
throat
is only a momentary pleasure and is bound to get you talked about.

You just need to make sure your share (in the smb.conf file) says

on second thought, even if samba will start you won't be able to access it if it only
have the loopback IP. you can add an IP by copying
'/etc/sysconfig/netword-scripts/ifcfg-eth0' (if you're connecting through ethernet. if
not use the device your connecting through) to
'/etc/sysconfig/netword-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0' (again, with the right device), editing
it, and then running 'ifdown eth0' and 'ifup etho' (...replace eth0 with the correct
device...). I don't remember if it's eth0:0 or eth0:1. try them both.

Hi

you didn't change /etc/hosts correctly. first add this line:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost

and then add another line with:

  Tesla. Tesla

this should solve the problem.

Re: [expert] SAMBA Help Please...

2001-02-18 Thread Sean Armstrong

When I type nslookup Tesla I get the following response:
*** Can't find server name for address "my DHCP assigned IP#":Server failed
*** Default servers are not available

Resolv.conf has only the following written in it:
nameserver "My DHCP assigned IP#"

Also some people have suggested to just run smbclient or smbmount. Neither
worked. SMBD and NMBD are still not running even though I changed my
/etc/hosts file to read 127.0.0.1 Tesla.localdomain localhost

What is wrong here? Why can'y I get SAMBA to work correctly for me. I don't
remember having this much trouble the last time I ran Linux.(Mandrake 6.1
about a year ago)

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a DNS issue. What happens when you type nslookup Tesla?

What are your settings for name resolution?

My name resolve is set as: host lmhost wins bcast

Your's may vary depending on the environment and the stability of DNS.

In that case, you don't really need to use your SMB/NMB servers. You
need to use smbmount (mount -t smbfs) or smbclient to access your files
on your NT share from your linux box.

mount -t smbfs -o username=user,password=password //ntserver/sharename
/your/linux/mnt/point

smbclient //ntserver/sharename (with user and pass as needed).
smbclient uses LOGNAME, so if you have an account with that name on the
NT box, you should be OK, and it will prompt you for your password.

Re: [expert] SAMBA Help Please...

2001-02-15 Thread Dave Sherman

Please do not use html in your messages. I use a mail client that only
displays plain text, so all your html formatting just looks like
gobbledygook to me, and makes it very difficult to read.

That said...

I also use dhcp on my laptop. In this case, all you need to do is add
the line:
127.0.0.1 myhost.mydomain.com myhost

to your /etc/hosts file. The 127.0.0.1 IP address is assigned to
"localhost" by default, but it can also be given to your actual host
and domain name.

Your dhcp client daemon will also automatically add an entry with your
current IP address and host name. If you see it there, leave it. If
not, don't worry about it.

gethostbyname requires a valid forward lookup. The quickest solution
to his is to add your machine to /etc/hosts.

192.169.12.234 tesla tesla.domain.net loghost

You also might want to double check that your DNS is set up correctly.

Can you find your Linux box from another PC on the network? Have you
checked the Samba logs? I ran into a problem where Samba was unable to
resolve my host name (the error msg was in the logs). I had to add it to
/etc/hosts, and then everything started working fine.

Hi

first, you can check with '/etc/init.d/smb status' to see if they are running
(probably not). now go to '/var/log/samba' (as root) and check the logs. chances are
that you'll find in the logs why the process doesn't start (e.g. a dns problem).

Good Luck
