[FairfieldLife] Sandhi, phonology and advaita?

2006-04-01 Thread cardemaister
Giitaa VI 5:

uddhared aatmanaatmaanaM
naatmaanam avasaadayet
aatmaiva hyaatmano bandhur
aatmaiva ripur aatmanaH

(Without sandhi:

uddharet; aatmanaa; aatmaanam
na; aatmaanam; avasaadayet
aatmaa; eva; hi; aatamanaH; bandhuH
aatmaa; eva; ripuH; aatmanaH)

Maharishi's translation:

Let a man raise his self by his Self,
let him not debase his Self; he alone,
indeed, is his own friend, he alone
his own enemy.

uddharet let [a man] raise
aatmanaa by [his] Self
aatmaanam his self-im (objective case)
na not
avasaadayet let [him not] debase
aatmaa [here:] he (literally: self?)
eva alone
hi indeed
aatmanaH his own (self's)
bandhuH friend
ripuH enemy

It's interesting to speculate whether
the (normal) sandhi aatmanaatmaanam for
aatmanaa + aatmaanam is an indication
of advaita (ayam aatmaa brahma) on the
level of phonology, or whatever.
There is of course no difference between
Self and self in the original devanaagarii,
because there are no upper case -characters
in DN.

OTB on Amazon (*):

Couldn't be improved upon. — In response to Randy LeJeune of Baton
Rouge, LA: But why stop at chapter six when the Gita has eighteen
chapters? I don't get it. It's not finished. As good as what he has
translated is, it would be great if he had completed the job. — It
WAS completed, but was not to be released until such time as was
found to be appropriate according to the progress of meditators or
world consciousness or both – I don't know which. The eighteen
chapters of the Gita may be grouped according to each set of six
chapters. Each set describes life in different stages of human
development. Chapters one through six talk about progression from
Transcendental to Cosmic Consciousness, chapters seven through twelve
describe evolution from Cosmic to God Consciousness, and the final
six chapters of thirteen through eighteen delineate human progress
from God Consciousness to Unity Consciousness – the supreme human
achievement. Beyond Unity, is Brahman Consciousness. But since this
necessitates vibrating outside of the human nervous system, there is
no human method of describing or validating it. So as Maharishi
says: Don't worry about it. As poor luck would have it, someone
stole the remaining 12 chapters from Charlie Lutes in whose
possession and safe keeping it was supposed to remain by not
returning the manuscript after borrowing it from him. There is no
additional copy of the original manuscript and no intention so far as
I know of (circa 1994) that Maharishi ever intends to rewrite the
missing chapters.

[FairfieldLife] My Trip to India!

2006-04-01 Thread medwards520
Hello Everybody:

I got back from India last week after completing the 21 day process.
This is a great course and I encourage you to attend, if you can. Ask
Bhagavan Amma for help if you don't have the money. Help can come in
many unexpected ways.

Here's a brief report about my trip to India. I didn't
get to attend the January 2006 21 day process. I had
to postpone it at the last minute. I did catch the
next one that was held from March 3-23, 2006.

---
While I was in India, every day felt like a Sunday.
The environment is very gentle but very conducive to
spiritual practices of any kind. There were lots of
emotional releasesduring the course. I was expecting
more bliss experiences. Bhagavan always tells his
followers to heal their relationships. Most of the
traumas, hurts, and pains are in that area. Not only
that, there is traumas from being born in the world,
birth trauma. All of that has been cleared.

I did see Bhagavan and Amma on his birthday ( March
07, 2006). The Indians love him and they treat him
like he's a rock star or a Hollywood celebrity. Every
movement he makes, the crowd reacts. I've
seen holy men and women over the years, but, never
have I seen a darshan like that. I thought I was
attending a superbowl football game. The energy was
high and folks were on the verge of religious fervor.
It reminded me of sitting in a black Baptist church.
You know the term sanctified? That's what it was
like.

The 21 day process is interesting. We didn't do
anything for the first two days except eat and lay
around. We were supposed to have an orientation
meeting on March 3. That was cancelled til the
next day. Oneness staff member concentrated on
registration, taking photo IDs. The orientation was
held in the evening.

The next day, the course began. March 5, 2006 at 7:30
am, we attended a maHAganapathy Homa. I didn't feel
the effects of the homa, but, as the course went on, I
did feel them. The homas lasted as a general rule of
thumb for two hours.

From there we went to class or the meditation hall.
During the meditation halls, we'd either listen to
lectures and/or observe a pada puja. Worship of the
guru's feet. Most of the shakti collects in the feet.
I have never done so much surrending in my life. I
reached a point when I couldn't surrender any more. I
told mentally told Bhagwan, I have nothing left. I've
already thanked you a thousand times. What more can I
give? I probably need to let go of one or two more
items as I look back on this situation now.

It rained the first two days we were there. I had done
research on the weather and March is the month that
receives the least amount of rainfall. Well, you could
have fooled me. My shoes got wet, but, I had another
pair, thank God. I once read that rain is considered a
good omen.

Every day it was pretty much the same routine. Go to
the meditation hall in the mens'dorm and/or the main
meditation hall next to the dining hall on the other
side of the campus. We would often receive mantra
deekshas there. One monk, male or female would place
their hands on each man and woman's head. Imagine
doing 100 plus people. The monks would have to be
escorted out by another monk. Giving deekshas can get
a person out there if you know what I mean.

On Sundays, we would see a movie. We saw an IMAX film.
I'll have to look through my notes to get the title.
I don't see it. Perhaps, I didn't write it down.

I did a lot of meditating on the course. It took two
weeks for my system to settle down. When I realized I
had only a week to go, I began meditating before going
to bed, sleep for a few hours, than get up early in
the morning 4am and meditate for one or two hours. I
was keeping myself in a meditative state during the
classes, so I was pretty spaced out most of the time.

It wasn't until the last day of the course that
deeksha showed me what it could do. We were giving
each other deeksha. Suddenly, I felt like I was inside
one of Con Edison's generators. The power was
everywhere, surrounding me. It took over my body. I
began making moaning sounds. When I gave deeksha to
the last man, we were in a circle of five. I broke
down and cried. It was an emotional cleansing that I
needed. I felt better afterwards.

There were other emotional releases during the course.
I got exactly what I needed, not what I wanted or
expected. I didn't wake up on the course. My system
did move forward a little.

We have several homas during this course. I hope they
get the job done. It would be nice to see things turn
around with the music (I'm a musician). Right now, it's the pits.

I think this is a great course for others to take. Two
more points. During the course, we observe mouma
(silence). I found it helpful. I'm not used to this.
On Transcendental Meditation courses, we can talk.
After being with that movement for 32 years, mouma
felt awkward. You have to remain celibate while you're
on the course. The course is so intense,

Sounds like somebody is sitting on a *gold mine*.

It's not clear from this account whether what's being
referred to is MMY's *translation* of chapters 7-18 or
his *commentary* thereon.

The translation has been circulating as a photocopy for
many years (it was actually typeset). It was also used
as the basis for a WPA at MUM a few years ago, led by
Vernon Katz. So it certainly hasn't been lost. I
believe I recall hearing that copies of the translation
were handed out to course participants.

Whether the commentary on these chapters was ever
written, I don't know, but apparently Katz *taught*
MMY's commentary on at least some parts of it on
that WPA.

My guess is that it exists only as Katz's notes
from his discussions with MMY, not in a fully
written-out form, and that the person being quoted
above is referring (inaccurately) to the translation.

When someone gave me a copy of the translation (a few
years before the WPA), it was with the understanding
that it wasn't strictly kosher for me to have it, and
that I shouldn't spread it around or say who had
given it to me. I suspect the person quoted had heard
about the pilfered copy of the translation and got the
details a bit confused, thinking it was the *sole*
copy that had been taken, and perhaps not realizing
that it was just the translation and not the commentary.

But that's just my guess.

There's also been a great deal of expert debunking of
the Thierry book (which is what the article at the link
is about).

I have my own conspiracy theory about the conspiracy
theories: I think some who are in a position to know
all the details of 9/11 find it in their interest to
encourage theories like Thierry's, including by
promulgating disinformation, because it sends the
conspiracy theorists on wild goose chases *away* from
the real story, whatever it is.

Information that would disprove the wilder conspiracy
theories isn't being released because these people
don't *want* the theories disproved. The more real
information is available, the more likely it is that
the various sleuths will be able to reconstruct the
true picture.

[FairfieldLife] A Story for Barry and Judy

2006-04-01 Thread Rick Archer
There once lived a great warrior. Though quite old, he still was able to
defeat any challenger. His reputation extended far and wide throughout the
land and many students gathered to study under him.

One day an infamous young warrior arrived at the village. He was determined
to be the first man to defeat the great master. Along with his strength, he
had an uncanny ability to spot and exploit any weakness in an opponent. He
would wait for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing a
weakness, and then would strike with merciless force and lightning speed. No
one had ever lasted with him in a match beyond the first move.

Much against the advice of his concerned students, the old master gladly
accepted the young warrior's challenge. As the two squared off for battle,
the young warrior began to hurl insults at the old master. He threw dirt and
spit in his face. For hours he verbally assaulted him with every curse and
insult known to mankind. But the old warrior merely stood theremotionless
and calm. Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself. Knowing he was
defeated, he left feeling shamed.

Somewhat disappointed that he did not fight the insolent youth, the students
gathered around the old master and questioned him. How could you endure
such an indignity? How did you drive him away?

If someone comes to give you a gift and you do not receive it, the master
replied, to whom does the gift belong?

[FairfieldLife] Later Chapters of Gita

2006-04-01 Thread Rick Archer
Title: Later Chapters of Gita

From a friend:

to be posted if U desire without my name, please. ... ... ... 7 or 8 yrs.ago now in May or June late 90's most likely 1999 or even the year 2000, without checking my notes in my calendar note book 4 that yr. I lunched a privately. with Vernon Katz in FF. @ a quiet restaurant in town. I asked re: the material he has. 1. the translations are fully completed. @ the commentary on each verse is fully completed as well. However he noted that from time to time both He M scholars refine the commentary's in small details for future publication. Vernon leaned over to me stated that the revised edition, just recently out by Paramahansa Yogananda was of very great excellence. Maharishi stated to him now that's excellently done. I need no longer refine it. it was now NOT needed to publicize this -- their works on The later chapters of the Bhagavad Gita. I took that to mean Maharishi attention would now longer need to focus on this matter as this had come out was available to seekers if they looked. I also understand but not from Vernon I do not now recall whom that our Purusha uses this 2 Volumes, work for there understanding of alter chapters etc.

Yes, I know. People think they see lots of different
things; eyewitness testimony is rarely completely
consistent. However, if you go over all the eyewitness
accounts, there were a whole bunch of people who were
absolutely firm about having seen a big passenger jet,
not a rocket or a private jet, right up close and personal.
One of them was in the car behind a car that had a light
pole land on it when the wing of the jet clipped the pole
coming in.

You'll always find outliers, eyewitnesses who saw
something different from most others.

That the surveillance videos were confiscated doesn't
somehow prove it wasn't a plane, of course. It may not
even be suspicious at all. This administration has a
long history of keeping stuff secret that has no need
to be secret.

And as I suggested, it *may* be being withheld because
releasing it would put all the conspiracy theories
about its being a rocket or whatever to rest, and then
these folks would start looking more closely at other
material the government *really* doesn't want them
investigating.

Good theory. Disinformation is used in the UFO controversy too. Let the

Not sure why the guy has problems with his hearing.

What are you talking about? You're not making any sense.
All *kinds* of things have been said about the passengers
on the planes that hit the WTC, including detailed
biographies of each of them.

There should have been some news about someone suing airport
security or some such I would have thought.

Oh, man, you haven't been paying attention. The
government started a fund for the victims' families
*in return for their agreement not to sue*.

This was big and continuing news several years ago.

There are all *kinds* of questions still to be answered
about 9/11. But you need to become well informed about
what *is* known in order to be able to ask them.

Anybody who wants to engage in conspiracy theorizing needs
to become familiar with what the debunkers of the
conspiracy theories have said. If all you read is what
the theorists are saying, you're almost certain to connect
the wrong dots.

There are people who *want* you to connect the wrong dots,
because that way you'll never see the whole picture.

There once lived a great warrior. Though quite old, he still was

defeat any challenger. His reputation extended far and wide
throughout the
land and many students gathered to study under him.

One day an infamous young warrior arrived at the village. He was
determined
to be the first man to defeat the great master. Along with his
strength, he
had an uncanny ability to spot and exploit any weakness in an
opponent. He
would wait for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing
a
weakness, and then would strike with merciless force and lightning
speed. No
one had ever lasted with him in a match beyond the first move.

Much against the advice of his concerned students, the old master
gladly
accepted the young warrior's challenge. As the two squared off for
battle,
the young warrior began to hurl insults at the old master. He
threw dirt and
spit in his face. For hours he verbally assaulted him with every
curse and
insult known to mankind. But the old warrior merely stood
theremotionless
and calm. Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself. Knowing he
was
 defeated, he left feeling shamed.

Somewhat disappointed that he did not fight the insolent youth,
the students
gathered around the old master and questioned him. How could you
endure
such an indignity? How did you drive him away?

If someone comes to give you a gift and you do not receive it,
the master
replied, to whom does the gift belong?

Sounds to me like a universal Law of Karma.

[FairfieldLife] File - FFL Guidelines.txt

2006-04-01 Thread FairfieldLife

Guidelines File 12/22/05

Fairfield Life averages 75-150 posts a day; 300+ on peak days. To avoid having
your inbox flooded, we suggest one of the following:

1) Opt to receive the emails, but create a folder in your email client and a
rule to direct all FFL posts to that folder.

2) Choose the no emails option and read FFL in your browser.

3) Opt to receive the daily digest.

4) Create another email account solely for FFL posts. Yahoo and Google now give
free 2Gb accounts.

5) You can also read FFL posts at
http://www.mail-archive.com/fairfieldlife@yahoogroups.com/. Some say this is
faster than the Yahoo groups interface, and prefer it because it allows sorting
by thread and has a better search function.

6) In order to prevent a repeat of the incident in which apparently, a
malicious member uploaded some x-rated photos and then notified Yahoo that our
chat had x-rated photos, thus causing our temporary reclassification to the
adult category, we have limited all members to read-only access for files,
photos, links, database, and calendar. If you would like to upload something,
please notify Gullible Fool ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or Rick ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).
We'll then temporarily lift the limitation, and impose it again after you're
finished. Sorry for the inconvenience.

7) Our Files and Photos section are usually full. If you want to upload
something, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It will be uploaded to
http://alex.natel.net/ffl/. We'll occasionally move the best material from
there to FFL, and may archive some FFL stuff there.

Check out http://www.frappr.com/fairfieldlife and add yourself if you feel like

1) This group has long maintained a thoughtful and considerate tone. Please
refrain from personal attacks, insults and excessive venting. Speak the truth
that is sweet is a worthy aspiration. If angry, take some time to gain
composure before writing or pushing the send button.

2) Edit your posts and make them as concise and non-repetitive as possible.

3) Please be highly selective in quoting a message to which you are responding,
deleting all but the most relevant portions of the prior posts. This makes the
daily digest easier to read for those who subscribe to it.

4) Try to make clear to the reader if you are writing from the perspective of
personal experience, from information gained from teachers or books, from your
own thoughts, reasoning, logic or conjecture. Please cite sources where
relevant.

5) Reference prior posts by their archive number whenever possible.

6) Anonymous posts are permitted, using an account you create or a shared
account. Shared accounts available for FFL use are as follows:
Login name = anon_astute_ff / Password = 123456
Login name = anony_sleuth_ff / Password = 123456
Login name = anon_couscous_ff / Password = 123456
Login name = anonybliss_ff / pw = 123456
Login name = anon_on_you_i_piss = pw =123456
Login name = a_non_moose_ff = Password = 123456
Login name = anonyff = Password = anonymous

7) FFL is a newsgroup public forum. FFL can be openly read from the web.
Posting privileges are through membership only. Material published to FFL is
not privileged or protected by law. Material published to FFL might be quoted
and used elsewhere.

8) Make cross-posts from other sites only as they are highly relevant to this
group. If you think another site has great value, write one post saying so,
then let others join or go to that site on their own, at their discretion.

9) Only post links to other sites that are relevant references to the specific
discussion at hand.

10) While friendly exchange between friends is natural, try to pass on personal
messages via personal e-mail, refraining where possible from sending personal
messages to the whole list.

11) Feel to invite your friends to join FFL, and to use the site's Promote
feature on your websites. The broader the personal network, the greater the
value to all. Friends may now access the posts of FFL directly off the home
page without having to join the list.

12) Please don't post commercial announcements in the main message area. See
the Database, Links and Files sections for folders that have been set up
listing books, CDs, DVDs and other items for trade, a Fairfield ride board,
local events, hiring/looking for work announcements, informative articles,
useful, links, etc.

13) Discussions of politics that affect personal growth and world consciousness
are allowed. However, be kind and respectful of others' viewpoints. Come with a
humble heart, an open mind, and the desire to contribute constructively to
everyone's broader awareness.

14) Keep in mind that many FFL members desire to maintain anonymity. If you
happen to know a member's real name, perhaps because that member has mentioned
it in a post or two, or just to you privately, please refer to that member only
by the pseudonym.

15) If you want to make suggestions for the

[FairfieldLife] Re: 5 stars!

2006-04-01 Thread Jason Spock

If the Translations for the remaining chapters exist, Why Can't the TM-org publish it.? Maharishi in the beginning of the Gita translation said that, each sloka in the Gita has to be interperted from the view-point of the 6 systems and 4 states of consciousness, which means there are 24 valid commentaries for each sloka of Gita. Maharishi himself has not written any commentary like that apart from that first sloka. Rick Archer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2006 09:15:24 -0600Subject: Re:
[FairfieldLife] 5 stars! OTB on Amazon (*): Couldn't be improved upon. — In response to Randy LeJeune of Baton Rouge, LA: "But why stop at chapter six when the Gita has eighteen chapters? I don't get it. It's not finished. As good as what he has translated is, it would be great if he had completed the job." — It WAS completed, but was not to be released until such time as was found to be appropriate according to the progress of meditators or world consciousness or both – I don't know which. The eighteen chapters of the Gita may be grouped according to each set of six chapters. Each set describes life in different stages of human development. Chapters one through six talk about progression from Transcendental to Cosmic Consciousness, chapters seven through twelve describe evolution from Cosmic to God Consciousness, and the
final six chapters of thirteen through eighteen delineate human progress from God Consciousness to Unity Consciousness – the supreme human achievement. Beyond Unity, is Brahman Consciousness. But since this necessitates vibrating outside of the human nervous system, there is no human method of describing or validating it. So as Maharishi says: "Don't worry about it." As poor luck would have it, someone stole the remaining 12 chapters from Charlie Lutes in whose possession and safe keeping it was supposed to remain by not returning the manuscript after borrowing it from him. There is no additional copy of the original manuscript and no intention so far as I know of (circa 1994) that Maharishi ever intends to rewrite the missing chapters. Never heard that story. I heard Vernon Katz has the whole thing.

We do? Perhaps you might find this book interesting:

Do you really believe that there was more than one gunman?

Yes I do.

The book is well documented. It took them 17 years to put it all
together. Some of the information was not available until the end of
the 1990s. They claim it was a mafia hit and that there was an attempt
a few days earlier in Tampa. I made the same conclusion after reading a
section of a college history book in the late 60's which talked about
Robert Kennedy's campaign against the mafia during the JFK administration.

I have Ultimate Sacrifice which is a thick book but a very interesting
read.

My wife got one the other day from someone in the UK who claimed that they
weren't going to live long and wanted to donate $20,000 to the animal
shelter for which she works. Sounded legit, so she responded. They emailed
back and asked if they could send an extra $8000 which she would donate to a
wounded child, of which they included a photo. It took me about 2 minutes to
find the child in snopes.com. Totally different than the child he described,
but same photo. I think the way this works is, they send you the check and
you send off the $8000 right away, then after a while the check they sent
you bounces, so you're out $8000.

No. What's amazing is that allegedly normal people like you fall
for any bullshit that's put in front of them.

Great reply Shemp- it would lead me to ask if it isnt the
majority who accept what is put in front of them by the mass media
which is the greatest known scource of BS that is in error or the
minority who listen to uncontrolled news scources.
The round hole punched thru the inner wall in the pentagon didn't
look lika a phoney picture to me.
Causing an event like this and blaming it on whoever is a very
old strategy to start a war with whoever.
I hope it doesn't take too many more of such events before people
stop believing what they are supposed to. N

I think quite a bit was said in the early days about the
passenger lists of all the planes including talking heads( Barbara
Olsen)on the plane that hit the Pentagon. The reason for all the pay outs
by the Government was to keep people from suing the individual Airlines and a
quick fix. In order to receive compensation one had to agree not to sue the
airlines as I recall.

One lost only about $3,000.00.

The other lost about $250,000.00. I didn't want to go into detail

ended up telling them what idiots they were and since I wanted their

Somehow they were convinced to send all that money to people in

 Yes I do.

The book is well documented. It took them 17 years to put it all
together. Some of the information was not available until the end
of
the 1990s. They claim it was a mafia hit and that there was an
attempt
a few days earlier in Tampa. I made the same conclusion after
reading a

about
Robert Kennedy's campaign against the mafia during the JFK
administration.

I have Ultimate Sacrifice which is a thick book but a very
interesting

I would use thick to describe something else.

  COWBOY

Sir, he was that guy who shot all those people from that tower in

  HARTMAN

That's affirmative. Charles Whitman killed twenty people from a

from distances up to four hundred yards.

[HARTMAN looks around.]

  HARTMAN

Anybody know who Lee Harvey Oswald was?

[Almost everybody raises his hand.]

Sir, he shot Kennedy, sir!

  HARTMAN

That's right, and do you know how far away he was?

  SNOWBALL

Sir, it was pretty far! From that book suppository building, sir!

[The recruits laugh at suppository.]

  HARTMAN

All right, knock it off! Two hundred and fifty feet! He was two
hundred and fifty feet away and shooting at a moving target. Oswald
got off three rounds with an old Italian bolt action rifle in only
six seconds and scored two hits, including a head shot! Do any of
you people know where these individuals learned to shoot?

[JOKER raises his hand.]

Private Joker?

In the Marines! Outstanding! Those individuals showed what one

[FairfieldLife] Time Cover Story on Global Warming

Polar Ice Caps Are Melting Faster Than Ever... More And More Land Is
Being Devastated By Drought... Rising Waters Are Drowning Low-Lying
Communities... By Any Measure, Earth Is At ... The Tipping Point
The climate is crashing, and global warming is to blame. Why the
crisis hit so soon--and what we can do about it
By JEFFREY KLUGER

No one can say exactly what it looks like when a planet takes ill, but
it probably looks a lot like Earth. Never mind what you've heard about
global warming as a slow-motion emergency that would take decades to
play out. Suddenly and unexpectedly, the crisis is upon us.

It certainly looked that way last week as the atmospheric bomb that
was Cyclone Larry--a Category 4 storm with wind bursts that reached
125 m.p.h.--exploded through northeastern Australia. It certainly
looked that way last year as curtains of fire and dust turned the
skies of Indonesia orange, thanks to drought-fueled blazes sweeping
the island nation. It certainly looks that way as sections of ice the
size of small states calve from the disintegrating Arctic and
Antarctic. And it certainly looks that way as the sodden wreckage of
New Orleans continues to molder, while the waters of the Atlantic
gather themselves for a new hurricane season just two months away.
Disasters have always been with us and surely always will be. But when
they hit this hard and come this fast--when the emergency becomes
commonplace--something has gone grievously wrong. That something is
global warming.

The image of Earth as organism--famously dubbed Gaia by
environmentalist James Lovelock-- has probably been overworked, but
that's not to say the planet can't behave like a living thing, and
these days, it's a living thing fighting a fever. From heat waves to
storms to floods to fires to massive glacial melts, the global climate
seems to be crashing around us. Scientists have been calling this shot
for decades. This is precisely what they have been warning would
happen if we continued pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,
trapping the heat that flows in from the sun and raising global
temperatures.

Environmentalists and lawmakers spent years shouting at one another
about whether the grim forecasts were true, but in the past five years
or so, the serious debate has quietly ended. Global warming, even most
skeptics have concluded, is the real deal, and human activity has been
causing it. If there was any consolation, it was that the glacial pace
of nature would give us decades or even centuries to sort out the problem.

But glaciers, it turns out, can move with surprising speed, and so can
nature. What few people reckoned on was that global climate systems
are booby-trapped with tipping points and feedback loops, thresholds
past which the slow creep of environmental decay gives way to sudden
and self-perpetuating collapse. Pump enough CO2 into the sky, and that
last part per million of greenhouse gas behaves like the 212th degree
Fahrenheit that turns a pot of hot water into a plume of billowing
steam. Melt enough Greenland ice, and you reach the point at which
you're not simply dripping meltwater into the sea but dumping whole
glaciers. By one recent measure, several Greenland ice sheets have
doubled their rate of slide, and just last week the journal Science
published a study suggesting that by the end of the century, the world
could be locked in to an eventual rise in sea levels of as much as 20
ft. Nature, it seems, has finally got a bellyful of us.

Things are happening a lot faster than anyone predicted, says Bill
Chameides, chief scientist for the advocacy group Environmental
Defense and a former professor of atmospheric chemistry. The last 12
months have been alarming. Adds Ruth Curry of the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts: The ripple through the
scientific community is palpable.

And it's not just scientists who are taking notice. Even as nature
crosses its tipping points, the public seems to have reached its own.
For years, popular skepticism about climatological science stood in
the way of addressing the problem, but the naysayers--many of whom
were on the payroll of energy companies--have become an increasingly
marginalized breed. In a new TIME/ ABC News/ Stanford University poll,
85% of respondents agree that global warming probably is happening.
Moreover, most respondents say they want some action taken. Of those
polled, 87% believe the government should either encourage or require
lowering of power-plant emissions, and 85% think something should be
done to get cars to use less gasoline. Even Evangelical Christians,
once one of the most reliable columns in the conservative base, are
demanding action, most notably in February, when 86 Christian leaders
formed the Evangelical Climate Initiative, demanding that Congress
regulate greenhouse gases.

A collection of new global-warming books is hitting the shelves in
response to that awakening interest, followed closely by TV and

[FairfieldLife] The Global Warming Scam

2006-04-01 Thread shempmcgurk
The Global Warming Scam
by Nima Sanandaji and Fred Goldberg
by Nima Sanandaji and Fred Goldberg

The media portrays a dramatic image of how the ice is melting in the
polar regions as a consequence of global warming. We are warned that
the North Pole might become icefree during the summer months at the
end of this century and that the polar bears might become extinct
due to this development.

But is this really a realistic image? Sure, there is research that
indicates that the ice sheets are being reduced, but there are also
studies that show the complete opposite. An example of this is a
study in the scientific journal Geophysical Research Letter where
the Swedish researcher Peter Winsor compares data collected by
submarines below the Arctic ice. His conclusions are that the
thickness of the ice has been almost constant between 1986 and 1997.

If you look at the South Pole there are studies that show an
increase in the mass of the ice. In a study published in the journal
Nature a number of polar researchers showed that they had observed a
net cooling of 0.7 degrees in the region between 1986 and 2000.
Another study published in Science showed that the East-Antarctic
ice sheet had grown with 45 million metric tones between 1992 and
2003.

Are the ices growing or melting? The simple answer is that there
exist studies that point to both directions, perhaps indicating that
scientists know relatively little about global climate. But what
counts to most ordinary people is what media is reporting, and media
is often highlighting the most alarming studies and seldom report of
studies that go against the notion that human activity leads to
global warming. To put it simply, the news is filtered through an
environmentalist view of the world.

An interesting example of how media sometimes gets it wrong is how
journalists reported that there had never been so little ice in the
Arctic than in 2005. This claim was based on satellite images by
NASA which showed that the geographic extent of the ice sheet had
never been so small since measurement began in 1979. One must
however keep in fact that about half of the ice in the Arctic melts
each summer and that two months before this measurment the extent of
the ice sheet was the same as the previous year. The problem is that
satellite images show the surface of the ice but not the thickness.

Capten Årnell at the summer expedition with the polar-ship Oden
could tell that he had never seen so much ice in the Arctic than in
2005. It was with great difficulty that he had passed through the
region. What had happened in 2005 seems to be that the ice had
packed densely against the Canadian part of the Arctic. The
geographical extent had been reduced but the ice was thicker.

As for polar bears, much points to that their numbers are increasing
rather than diminishing. Mitch Taylor, a Canadian expert on animal
populations, estimates that the number of polar bears in Canada has
increased from 12 000 to 15 000 the past decade. Steven C Amstrup
and his college have studied a population of polar bears in Alaska
and reported that the number of females had increased from 600 to
900 between 1976 and 1992. Even a report from the WWF which is
entitled Polar bears at risk and warns that the populations of the
polar bears might become extinct due to global warming, supports
that the number of polar bears is increasing. In the report the
polar bears in the world are divided into 20 populations. It shows
out that only 2 of these populations are decreasing, while 10 are
stable, 5 are growing and 3 are not possible to comment about.

Global climate is an important issue to debate, but it is sad that
what is communicated often has a clear shifting towards the worst-
case scenarios and the doomsday theories. There is no reason to
scare people by giving them only one side of the argument.

tank Captus and the editor of Captus Journal. He is a graduate

can vary widely -- on any number of factors -- including quite mundane

And why focus only on Boeing? If the market as a whole dumped after

Um, no, Shemp, there'd be no motivation for them to

There's clean and then there's clean.

I can easily make the case that the Bush Administration LIKES the

because as long as people are muttering about conspiracies

I kind of don't think that could be it, simply because
the conspiracy theorists are in a really tiny minority.
Keeping *them* distracted from the gross incompetence
isn't going to be that much of a help.

But because they're so highly motivated to find the dirt,
 distracting them from real dirt could be a *huge* help;
they're likely to be the ones who find it, if there is
 any.

And I think there is *some*. The most glaring evidence
that something funny was going on is what happened on
the stock market in the days before the attack. I
haven't seen anybody even attempt to make a case that
 that was benign.

On the other hand, it's usually just mentioned in passing
as one of the unanswered questions. I'm unaware of
anyone who is seriously trying to dig up information on
 it.

Seems to me it would be the key to the whole thing. Yet
people are much more fascinated by the controlled-
demolition and Where's the plane? scenarios, which just
aren't going to get anywhere definitive (unless somebody
 'fesses up).

Money trail- great point, if there was a positive ID on it all,
it would remove most if not all the speculation. N.

He doesn't. There is not even the remotest similarity
between a passing Tomahawk and passing Boeing.

I can't say why he thought he heard a missile, but
given the very substantial number of people who
reported seeing a passenger plane, plus all kinds of
other hard evidence (like five clipped light poles
along the plane's path whose locations indicate the
plane's wingspan was at least 100 feet), I'm not
inclined to take this one guy's word for it that
the sound was wrong.

Eyewitness testimony generally is *very* unreliable,
especially with regard to a traumatic event. But it's
a *lot* more likely that one guy's ears (or his memory
of what he heard) were malfunctioning than that almost
100 people mistook a missile for a passenger jet.

And then there's the light poles...

For more info on why it had to be a plane, see:

http://eric.bart.free.fr/iwpb/

This guy is also a conspiracy theorist; he thinks
there was a bomb involved and makes an interesting
case for this. But he also provides all kinds of
evidence that a big commercial jet hit the Pentagon.

[FairfieldLife] Re: The Global Warming Scam

2006-04-01 Thread anony_sleuth_ff
I am currently reading State of Fear by Michael Critcheon -- with a
global warming theme. The book makes some good points about the
selectivity of the media -- particularly that written by
non-scientists -- which is almost all the articles. And the biases and
agendas of environmetal groups --not unique -- all NGOs and
non-profits get a bit twisted in making their message regarding
complex issues understandable -- and critical enough to drive
continued funding.

I laughed when I saw the title of the Time article Be Scared, Be
Very, Very Scarred .. (or similar) becuase that is the theme and
title of the book -- the state of fear created by media (to get
ratings and ad dollars), NGOs to raise funds, politicians to get vots,
universities -- well for multiple reasons.

But some facts aka claims in the article are new (to me) and
alarming. I do seek, the larger balanced picture. Shemps article is
interesting, though I would like to see those claims countered also.

With climate scince, it is so complex, take any part of the proverbial
elephant and one can make a compelling case for or against.

However the argument no longer appears to be is there an greenhouse
effect occurring, rather, how strong is it, what are the
ramifications, how soon will they occur, how much is man-made vs.
natural cycles, and what can be done to mitigate the most damaging
effects.

 The Global Warming Scam

In the report the
 polar

I think the video referred to Boeing OPTIONS not stock. The volume
options is usually more volatile than stocks. But even the stock, in
July, had 4:1 spikes in volume. Not so unusual. And I am sure the
options volume fluctuated more. Supporting Shemps point, and my point
in adjacent post. A 4:1 spike means nothing by itself. One needs to
see how many standard deviations from the mean that is. Or some other
appropriate statistical test -- e.g., a regression line of options
volume, and deviations from it.

Which supports the point I made in an adjacent post.

appropriate statistical test -- e.g., a regression line of options
 volume, and deviations from it.

Which supports the point I made in an adjacent post.

$28 million would be a snivel.

Boeing options was my recollection from the video. And the

normal. Or similar. Are you saying you heard something completely
different from the video? I may have got it jumbled. Anyone listening
to it afresh, can you provide a rough transcript of this part.

I was simply referencing (my recollection of) the video, not

variations. I will look at the data. (Though the source seems to be

American Airlines saw a 6,000 percent jump in put options above
normal the day before the attacks. However, there was no similar
trading activity on any other airlines, according to market reports.

The brokerage houses that had offices in the WTC, Morgan Stanley and
Merrill-Lynch, saw 27-fold and 12-fold increases in the purchases of
put options on their respective shares between Sept. 7 and Sept. 10.

Ok I checked the video.About 5 minutes into it, it says,

On Sept 6, 3150 put options on AA 4x daily put volume average.
On Sept 7, 27,294 put options on Boeing 5x daily put volume average.
On Sept 10, 4516 put options on AA 11x daily put volume average.

So both were cited. There were more than 3x Boeing options than American.

The above 11x is quite a bit smaller than 60x or nearly 100x cited
by artical and you. 11x seems in normal range. 100x does seem high.
And it all hinges on what period one uses for averaging. I will take a
look at the raw data (one of these days, maybe sooner) and provide an
assessment.

It looks like it has been a sucess in the war-having a controlled
slow down in oil production so the oil interests will have less work
to do per dollar.
WTC- sucess in setting up fear based homeland security.
Remember the colorful alert levels prior to the election and how
they seemed to be forgotton afterwards.
If Houston blows up,on purpose, we could end up with terrorist
fear based martial law and the need to bomb the rest of the mid East.

From the Loose Change video, their argument was that trading
 in
Boeing options volume was 2x,3x and 5x or something some days
 or
   weeks
prior to 9/11. In itself, that means nothing. Stock or option
   volume
can vary widely -- on any number of factors -- including quite
   mundane
and benign ones. Look to the Force Luke (and Judy) -- aka the
statistics 101 class you took years ago.

How many standard deviations from the mean was the event(s)?
 The
   above
numbers could have been 1 SD -- quite frequent, or a six-sigma
   event
--- very, very rare. Present the statistics (Yahoo Finance may
   have),
then make a case.

For fun I might look up the data and see. I bet it was an event
happening once every 3-12 months, or 1-4 times a year or more.

And why focus only on Boeing? If the market as a whole dumped
 after
9/11 (after market reopenened in 3-4 days, as I recall. Why
 not
   just
short the SP 500 or buy puts options on the SP 500. That
 would be
much harder to see and trace anomolies due to volume.

Fortunately, the good people at Yahoo! Finance lets you see the
historical trading volume and prices for any given stock.

For Boeing from August 1, 2001 to September 11, 2001, here is
 the
daily volume and closing prices of the stock (hey, I got to do
   another tiny url!):

   http://tinyurl.com/ncl7l

One can take any stock and do similar research for it.

So I fully expect Judy-Petooty to roll up her sleeves and back
 up
the nutty statement she made in a previous post regarding that
 this
is where the key evidence is to be found.

   Get to work, Judy!

And if I heard it correctly, I believe the video said $28 million
 was
made on the options. Hardly much of a sum for the cost and
  ramifications of creating 9/11.

$28 million would be a snivel.

including in the mainstream media. This is just a
  recap.

7 and Sept.
   10.

haha, I just noticed -- within 4 days, a less than 50% increase in AMR
puts volume was cited as resulting in almost a tripling in comparing
daily averages (4x vs 11x). Thus, either they are using bad data, OR
they are using a different interval of days to calculate daily
averages for sept 6 and sept 10. Which is totally bogus.

Or simply using THAT day's average. Thats crap as far as seeing if the
figures are statistically abnormal. The daily average should be
calculated over at least 30 trading days, better, over a year.

The figures were sliced, diced and cherry picked.

I've heard as much as a billion was made on various

is not that the people who planned the attacks who made
the purchases, but rather other people who had information

Whatever the problems with the figures in this specific
article, suspicious trading prior to 9/11 was *very*
widely reported in the major news media. The 9/11
commission even investigated it, concluding there were
innocuous explanations, but without saying what they
were. I believe the SEC investigated also, but did not
release a report.

I'm astonished that so many of you weren't aware that
this was a major concern after the attacks. It isn't
just something the conspiracy theorists dreamed up.

And I think there is *some*. The most glaring evidence
that something funny was going on is what happened on
the stock market in the days before the attack. I
haven't seen anybody even attempt to make a case that
that was benign.

From the Loose Change video, their argument was that trading in
Boeing options volume was 2x,3x and 5x or something some days
or
  weeks
prior to 9/11.

Why not
  just
short the SP 500 or buy puts options on the SP 500. That
would be
much harder to see and trace anomolies due to volume.

Fortunately, the good people at Yahoo! Finance lets you see the
historical trading volume and prices for any given stock.

For Boeing from August 1, 2001 to September 11, 2001, here is the
daily volume and closing prices of the stock (hey, I got to do
  another tiny url!):

  http://tinyurl.com/ncl7l

One can take any stock and do similar research for it.

So I fully expect Judy-Petooty to roll up her sleeves and back up
the nutty statement she made in a previous post regarding that
this
is where the key evidence is to be found.

  Get to work, Judy!

And if I heard it correctly, I believe the video said $28 million
was
made on the options. Hardly much of a sum for the cost and
 ramifications of creating 9/11.

But if the terrorists were hoping to cash in on their own actions to
help fund future actions, would be a nice sum of cash by THEIR
standards.

Do you really believe that there was more than one gunman?

do you believe he acted all on his ownwithout ANY help from
  anyone
   else?

Although I believe there was only one gunman, I am open to the
possibility that Castro, the Mafia, or someone or some other
group
  was
   behind him.

Atthe very least, I think a case can be made that security was
lax
  around JFK at that time.

+++ I believe his travel route was changed at the last minute and so
there wasn't time to sanitize it

So how was Oswald able to set himself up if it was a last minute
change?

Just about every COngressional hearing I've read/seen seems to avoid
asking obvious questions, and accepts really blatantly strange
answers as truthful without pursuing clarification.

I mean, look at how mocking Ollie North was of Congress at his trial.
Look at the odd case of the radio operator who never tried to radio
Hawaii with a warning because he'd tried to contact Perl Harbor
earlier about something else and couldn't get through so he didn't
bother to try again. Etc.

Congress only finds what they want to find.

Another trivia point was some speculation that JFK was
advocating
some major change in the monetary system- making it have some stable
basis or being free of any foriegn influence or some such.
There was some conjecture that president Lincoln was into
something similar which was a common denominator in getting them
both
 shot. N.

I guess the congressional investigations will believe strange
things as well as the people who elected them. It's just a few of us
nut cases that want real answers.
