The rent is too damn high!

Who doesn't think their Internet and cable bills are too high? For years
now, I've been tracking the stories asking why we in the U.S. seem to be
perennial sufferers of a certain chronic syndrome: Bills too high, Internet
speed too slow.

Why your cable bills are so high, and what you can do:

The good thing about Comcast trying to buy Time Warner Cable is that it
has brought this issue to the forefront which is something I can be the
dummies who run Comcast didn't expect. The discussion has gone VERY
viral and I highly doubt the Comcast-TWC merger will be allowed. They
will probably drop it.

But it has also made what was the Netflix throttling discussions go from
geek and home theater enthusiast sites to mainstream America. Lots of
people are annoyed now with see rebuffering and low resolution displays
when they should be getting HD. Probably time to create a national
front for change to take away the telecom monopolies.

In my native state of Washington dusty ol' Ephrata, a town of around
6000 has very fast Internet comparable to Google fiber. Thing is this
was part of a program that was put into effect some 15 years ago by the
Washington Public Utilities Department. Interesting thing is after
municipal fiber was put in the then Democrat governor came out against
it. That's the problem: these monopolist telecoms get their state
assembly leaders to implement laws against municipal fiber. BTW, it's
really not a monopoly but a monopsony:

Taking care of all these cars can really keep a guy busy. There are
maintenance costs; keeping them garaged; make sure they are clean inside
and out and shiny; paying the State inspections and payments to the tax
assessor; and there's oil and gas to buy. Just keeping the right amount of
air in the tires is a chore.

You used to able to go to your local gas station and they would fill up
your car with gas, check the oil and water, make sure the battery was good
to go, put air in the tires if needed, and wipe the windows clean.

These days, you have to go to a convenience store like an Exxon Tiger Mart
to get air for your tires. If you purchase gas and then walk inside and
have them turn on the air compressor you can get free air for your tires,
and then half of the time, the air unit is out of order. Otherwise, you
have to pay.50 cents for air and be real quick about it. Go figure.

WHAT!?

Probably the last thing I need is to buy a house just so I could be
close to a golden dome. I already sold my shack out in Hays County and
rented a house down in San Antonio. I'll probably sell Dad's place on
the lake when he is gone. I'm still in Texas for two reasons: no
personal income tax and I like live music venues.

I'm paying $400 a month for rent down here, and the rent is still too

Richard, my electric bill was $11 last month. In summer it can be as high as

Are you all in a drought area? I've heard that much of the west gets its water

My electric bill through the summer and up until November is usually

cooling quite a bit so AC seldom needs to be run but that December was

old shake roof was actually better for heating and not so good for cooling.

According to Click Clack, The Tappit Brothers, you can go over
6,000 miles between oil changes. I've always been fond of Texaco oil.
I get almost all of my oil from either Spindletop or from the Permian
Basin. Dad goes 5,000, because it's easy to remember the numbers. One
guy, a car mechanic, once told me that oil never breaks down - all
you have to do is change the oil filter and add a quart of oil. Go
figure.

So, this time I took the car to Pep Boys for the oil change: $19.95
for Pennzoil, with a discount coupon, and half an hour waiting. And,
I bought my own filter for $12.95 and put it on myself.

Today we went to the grocery store to get a few things and return about a
hundred plastic bags. In the parking lot I turned left to find a parking
slot and there was this yahoo in a big truck heading toward me, GOING THE
WRONG WAY, driving a Ford F-350 with dual wheels on back.

At first I said You **fukin **#@*^^!!!#@*%$#%@ SOB!

Then, I realized the poor guy was not only real dumb and half blind
and confused, but he was probably driving the only vehicle he owned and
paying $600 a month in payments, just to go get a six-pack of beer and a
carton of cigarettes at the store. Go figure.

So then, in the Christmas spirit, I said: you **fukin
**#@*^^!!!#@*%$#%@ poor bastard! and backed up, causing a traffic jam
in front of the store.

Then, on the way home at a stop light, a guy dressed in overalls
with a styrofoam cup in his hand tried to hit us up for some spare
change. So, still in the Christmas spirit, I rolled down the window and
said real nice: We don't have any cash - we're living on credit cards.
Sorry we can't donate anything - I know it looks like I'm rich because I'm
driving a shiny new car, but this where all our money is going, just so we
can get to the store to buy some beer and a few canned goods! LoL!

When we got home, the Salvation Army called on the telephone to ask
if we could donate anything and to leave it on the front porch FRIDAY THE
13th. You can't make this stuff up!

I heard a report the other day on why car prices have

you got it... profit. Adding air bags do not add much to the

OTOH, the other day I ordered a new keyless remote for the

In September our water bill was $90; so we cut back; then in October the
bill was $40.

We tried to use less water by:

1. Only doing full loads of wash using cold water once a week.
2. Filling the sink with water for dish washing, instead of leaving the
water running.
3. Taking quick showers and low tub fills for bathing.
4. Stopped watering the front lawn and half of the back yard.

Then, the November water bill came in at $110. This is just outrageous!!!

Who are you going to call? So, I called the San Antonio Water System (SAWS)
to complain, to no avail. The water company is a monopoly! One guy's bill
was over $500 for one month, and he was out of town for ten days. Go
figure. They found a leak at his place - in the concrete foundation pipe!

So, I've started to monitor the water meter. Do they actually read those
meters, or is it just a guestimate?

Now, why would anyone want to pay close to $1000 to put Goodyear Eagles

Here's the funny thing. You have dummies who don't like to pay for
other people's health care. Or so they claim. But they don't want to
pay for Obamacare either. So what happens if they get sick and rack up
huge medical bills? We wind up paying for them. In fact I already
being gouged by Blue Cross the past decade and them not having to pay
out a single claim. Only in 2000 when I had cataract surgery by the
best specialist in the Bay Area did they have to pay out and at that the
bill equaled what I paid in premiums. Like Willy would say: go figure.

I'm on Medicare now and it hasn't needed to pay out any claims either.

The Canadian health care bill was only a few pages long and Obamacare
over 2000 pages. Obamacare was a plan put together by the Heritage

Americans are being treated like chickens in a hen house. If the dollar
collapses which it eventually will, they can blame it on Obamacare
rather that the criminal acts of the big banks.

I sincerely believe the medical industry, including all the elements

Welcome to Austerity!

On Tuesday Comcast encrypted all the Open QAM channels (mostly local
broadcast and a few extras they throw into Limited Basic). So if someone
had a small TV in the kitchen they only watched local news on while
getting breakfast they now have to get a small box from Comcast. The
reason they encrypted Limited Basic was so they didn't have to roll a
truck out and put a trap on the line. They could just turn the customer
on and off from the head end. Apparently Time-Warner hasn't done that yet.

Also most cable companies who haven't done so already want to move to
IPTV. That's what U-Verse is. Instead of sending you all the channels
it works like the Internet and when you change channels the server at
the central office switches channels sent to you. They also can send out
4-6 channels at once over one IP address. It's MPEG-4 encoding not
MPEG-2 which requires less bandwidth per channel and also doesn't
pixelate like MPEG-2 on action scenes. I do think some of the cable
companies are holding out to use Google's On8 technology which is used
in WebM. It's open source and free or no royalties. They have to pay
a royalty to MPEG-LA for the use of MPEG-4.

Did you try a search on C Band? Those were really big back in the
1980s. A friend installed them and was willing to give me a deal on
them for my mother's house. She thought they were ugly and wouldn't put
one in but then she never saw what was available on them and that would
have been another story. :-D

It's probably cheaper to just use one of the two satellite providers. I
had Dish Network for a while when they went HD. My HD receiver was the
first one my installer had ever installed. And I had to fix it after he
left because he didn't know what he was doing. ;-)

On the tires they often only put 40,000 mile tires on new cars anyway.
My Subaru came with those. My mechanic told me to be careful about
skimping on tires because cheap ones can cost you mileage. But he also
said you don't need to buy the most expensive ones. I'm due for some
new tires too to keep the old jalopy going. I put about $2000 into it
which was just regular maintenance around 100K miles to keep it going
another 100K.

For the amount of money we wasted in the last ten years on foreign wars
we could have given EVERYONE in the US free medical health care.

I also saw a really dumb Tea Partier sign the other day that showed a
woman holding up a sign saying health care is not a right. Bet she
would feel differently if she needed it and was gouged for it. But the
second line on her sign was even more stupid. It said something to the
extent that a man shouldn't give away his work for free. No one is
asking doctors to work for free. But we could use market economics to
make for more doctors and more medical assistants. The AMA is the
stodgy one in this case. It is an old boys network.

So, when I returned the two cable boxes to Time-Warner and to terminate
the HD and DVR service, I asked them how much would it cost just to have
basic cable. The guy said they would have to send out a technician to
put a 'trap' on the line to filter out the other channels, so I told
them to close the account. It's Friday and the cable is still active,
but I have powered antennas from the Shack anyway. Go figure.

The rent is too damn high!

This week I took my daughter's PT Cruiser in to the dealership because
she said the front was 'wobbling' at 35-40 mph. The service manager
called back and said one of the front tires had a 'ball' on it. He
recommended getting four new Goodyear Eagles, balanced and a front end
alignment - $950. What!?

Now, why would anyone want to pay close to $1000 to put Goodyear Eagles
back on the same car that already had a Goodyear tire with a ball on it
at 30,000 miles? So, I had the tires rotated, front to back, for $15 on
the south side, sweet!. Maybe I'll buy two new Falken tires at Discount
Tires. Go figure.

The rent is too damn high!
