another despair - prayer for Rikki - ARF/FIP?

2006-11-16 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
Hi, please pray for my most gentle kitty, Rikki - Rikki was abandoned by
someone who lived at an apartment where I was renting several years
ago,, they left him behind.. he was living under the bush until I
decided to bring him home - he somehow was tested incorrectly as FIV a
few years ago, but it turned out false positive and he has been such a
sweet and kind addition to my family -

A several months ago, I noticed that he started losing weight, and did a
couple of blood work and they always come back pretty normal.. most of
my kitties have high globulin - so FIP is never completely ignored.. but
I have had lots of corona virus cats for the past 7 years or so.. so I
had stopped worrying about FIP - until a few months ago, when I started
losing my babies one after the other to FIP -

My vet thinks that ARF is a result of FIP - and he maybe losing sight
gradually (not to due to BP -as it's normal) - it also happens with FIP
-

He has been on IV all day today and I am bringing back tomorrow day time
to get some more --- I just feel so helpless - I am so devastated and
cannot even cry -

Everyone please pray that a miracle will happen and my Rikki will feel
better - he does not deserve this...

Never apologize for loving the little ones and caring enough to seek help for
them either in this world or in the next.

I am so sorry you are going thru this. Please know that you are doing so much
good and the little ones adore you for it. A friend of mine swears we get
Karma points for hard times. You are getting them by the millions. The little

Daily pred helped her survive the death of the heartworms and she was one of my
"library cats", who regularly came to school with me. Such a sweet and gentle
girl - she did the cutest little trick of standing right next to me with one of
her hind feet -- always a hind foot - resting on my foot. The heartworms left
her with right heart damage which we weren't aware of. She began throwing
clots to her lungs and brain.

Please also add my little foster fella, Stinky, who was felv positive. He
died on 9/25. He was the cutest little tabby - always full of life and
mischief, only 8 months old. Healthy up until the last week and then boom.

And please add my precious, precious Daisy (feleuk pos) also - she died on
Sept. 15. Daisy. How do I describe her. She was technically my foster baby
but so much more. Last year she came to school with me every day. She is the
only kitty I've ever had who came to me every time I called. I'd call
"Dai-doo" and in return get this little "yip-yow" from wherever she was and
here she'd come trotting to me as fast as she could. She followed me around
the library every step I took and the whole staff and student body were in love
with her. I could take her anywhere with me on a harness and leash and she had
a ball. I got her at 4 months and she didn't come in heat until 18 months.
My vet and I were trying to decide if/when to spay her. She gaiined weight
over the summer and looked so healthy. Came into heat a second time in late
August.

She'd been on interferon and when we decided to spay her I decided to start
her on immunoregulin and wait a month or so first. The weekend before she
died, I couldn't find her one day. I was tearing the house apart - one thing
that I moved looking for her was a bed with lots of stuff under it. I didn't
find her there -- and when she finally turned up later at the other end of the
house it was like she was shell-shocked. She looked panicked and couldn't turn
her head very well - cried like moving hurt her. I made the assumption that
she'd been under the bed I'd moved and I'd squashed her or otherwise hurt her.
Was afraid I'd injured her neck - gave her a depo shot. She seemed to move
better and went on to have the best week she'd had in ages. Up thru Friday
night whe was fine. I couldn't find her all day Sat - found her dead Sunday
morning. Now I wonder if the last weekend's episode was feleuk related. Also
- I'd updated her respiratory vaccs in late August -- wouldn't have done except
that I have so many chronic URI fosters.Has anyone ever experienced
anything like this?

She was just 22 months old and her death has completely broken my heart.

And now Valley - please put him on the special needs list - I need prayers
or meditation or chanting or whatever you believe in -- for a remission for the
feleuk crisis he is in. He is another of my "library cats" who comes to work

at the time. Feleuk positive. Looked like death warmed over but once fattened
up has been so healthy that I had him retested last year to see if he'd
reverted to neg.

He began losing weight about 2 weeks ago - gums pale as snow. Blood work
shows a hematocrit of 7 - almost not compatible with life. He is still
somewhat active - gets off the bed to go to the litterbox and sometimes to the
rest of the house. Will eat if I put food in front of him. His vet thought we
could get a remission until the blood work came back. He is getting raw
liver, Clindamycin, 5mg pred e

Hideyo,

I am so sorry to hear about Olive. This is not your fault. With as many
cats as you deal with, and the fact that you take in ferals and strays who are
not healthy to begin with.. These things cause your losses. My oldest cat
ever was only 13 or 14. My cats have various health problems. I think it's
because they are strays who had no care themselves, or their mothers. These
things take their toll. Stop blaming yourself. You are not responsible for a
cat coming down with fip. No way!

Hi, everyone I just cremated my little Dharma this morning --- before I
had a chance to sit down and think of all the memories of my little special

has FIP... and I just found it out..and I am just devasted all over again.

Olive is my feral kitty who is now about a year old and who came from the
same colony as Dharma and Naomi. Since she is a feral kitty, I really did not
know how sick she was and it's my fault not paying attention to her more..she
had a seizure tonght -- and I held her and noticed that she had lost lots of
weight and very dehydrated.. and she must be very weak as she let me hold her..
I gave her 250 ml of subQ fluid as she was extremely dehydrated and hot -- and
I ran to the emergency clinic after that..and asked them to run a blood
work---I was so praying that it's not FIP -- then, I waited and finally
talk to the doctor regarding blood work and it was very similar to Peter's
blood work --the doctor did not know exactly what it was-- she said either
cancer or FIP...her gloublin is elevated and alubmin is decreased, her total
bilrbrin is elevated.. and mos of the liver (ALT and AST) were very elevated.
.she was not anemic (PCV=31) -- she thought I really coudln't
treat her since she was feral and suggest euthanaisa.. but I said no.. I want
to bring her home and try everything I can.. she just was walking around and
eating until earlier today...so I brought her home as I knew she would be
better off coming home as there wasnt' anything they could do for her
specifically. I held her for a long time.. she is just very sweet..

I did not know ir I coule syringe feed her,, but she let me and she ate very
well.. she is just very sweet little gir.. she is black/white taxido girl...
sthe bad new is since then, she had three more seizures.. I really did not want
to give her valium as she already has liver issue.. but I coudln't let her keep
having a seizure so I gave a little bit of valium to see if it will help not to
have seizure anymore..

Everyone.. I am now convinced that I am the one who is producing this disease
fo rmy kitties -- I know that FIP is stress induced disease.. and all of the
kitties who have had FIP were not corona virus posivite kitties and the become
exposed due to all my others who have been.. and all of the kitties who have
had FIP have been here less than year.. and my envrinment has caused them to
die -- Dr. Ishidaalso mentioned something similar when I first explained how
many kitties I have had FIP -- as much as he admired what I do. .he thought
that I was causing FIP among my cats.. and I have to agree -- it's too much of
price to pay and they did not deserve to die.. I had a good intension but it
was not good enough and I am very responsible of all the deaths so I really am
not any kind of hero.. if I did not bring them home,, they would not have
gotten FIP ...I don't regret that the fact thatI had an opportunity to have met
them.. but had no right to bring my house which is
considered to be a very high risk for FIP .. they did not ask for that...

Everyone, please pray and send a good positive healinng energy to my little
Olive.. I started on FOI tonight and am hoping that it will make her feel
better - again I have not given up regardlesss of whatever the disease might
be.. I still belive in power of intensions and miracle if that's what it
takes.. I juar have to be calm and sending her a good thought..

again thank you very much for all your support and I am sorry for asking for
more prayers before I had a chance to thank you for all your kind words you
have sent to me and dharma..

I have been wary about it, but my vet assured me that if it is safe IV it
will be safe sub-q, only potentially not as effective. Humans do not take
things sub-q very well-- we do not have the same kind of skin or the same space

between our skin and under-layers. Several others on this list have given I-R
sub-q without any bad reaction at all, and I assume without pain since they
said it works fine. Lucy gets really stressed about going to the vet for the

I'd recheck that with the manufacturer before giving it Sub-Q, it seems I
recall it being said it is NOT meant to be given sub-q, and MUST be IV. I'd
hate for her to have her skin start to slough off or something else horrible
due to using I-R off label!!!

http://www.neogen.com/immunoregulin.htm (the people who make it)
http://www.pharmcast.com/Patents100/Yr2004/April2004/042704/6726913%20_Acnes042704.htm
(more about the active ingredient, and specifically points out that
administering it sub-q is PAINFUL, and if done so, should probably be mixed
with lidocaine for use in HUMANS)

And on another not so cheery note IF you do choose to use it OFF LABEL
administered via Sub-Q, then you will have NO recourse if your cat is hurt
or killed due to a bad reaction. You can't report reactions if you're not
following the manufacturer's instructions for usage!

Just be safe follow the label and give it IV only. Is it REALLY worth
the RISK?
If you do ever need to report a bad reaction, here's the place to do that:
https://web01.aphis.usda.gov/CVB/adverseeventreport.nsf/Adverse%20Event%20Report%20Form?OpenForm
(this one is for ANY bad reaction to ANY veterinary drug)
http://www.vas-awareness.org/ReportReaction.htm
(this one is specific to vaccine reactions, but you could always call the
phone numbers and ASK about reporting non-vaccine pharmaceuticals)

Re: need prayers

2006-11-16 Thread Jennifer Phaewryn O'Gwynn
Are you SURE that there are no fleas in the house? Fleas are the most common
cause of anemia. Did you test them for Hemobartonella (several times,
several different cats)? What brand of food do you feed (what's the first
ingredient)?

Hemobartonella: How is Diagnosis Confirmed? Confirmation of diagnosis has
been problematic since the discovery of the organism. Because it lacks a
cell wall, Mycoplasma haemophilus cannot be cultured, which means one cannot
simply culture a blood sample and isolate the organism the way one might
isolate the organism causing something like a urinary tract infection. Most
reference labs scan all feline blood samples under the microscope looking
for the characteristic appearance of infected red blood cells (see graphic
at the top of the page). Unfortunately, the number of organisms cycles in a
matter of hours such that the number of infected cells can change from 90%
to 1% in a matter of 3 hours. This makes it very easy to miss infected
cells, even in a grossly infected cat.

Hemobartonella felis was first discovered in Africa in 1942 but it was not
recognized as a mycoplasma until gene sequencing was possible recently. This
has led to renaming Hemobartonella felis to Mycoplasma haemophilus, though
after decades of celebrity we shall see if they new name becomes commonly
used. Complicating matters further, gene sequencing has revealed a second
species, previously thought to be another variant of Hemobartonella felis.
This one, which is smaller, has been named Candidatus M haemominutum. This
smaller mycoplasma seems to only be a problem for cats infected with the
feline leukemia virus.

good, thanks. The Immuno-regulin really seems to have helped her. When I
took her last Thursday for it, she had just about stopped eating again from
her
URI and was very stuffy. About an hour or two after the shot she started
eating again, and she has acted normal ever since, except for a bit of
stuffiness now and then. I took her for another I-R shot on Tuesday, and since
then
all I have noticed is a little bit of a dripping nose a couple of times. She
is energetic and eating well, though, knock on wood. I may try to follow up
with sub-q for a dose or two. The vet said that anything that can be given IV
won't hurt given sub-q, but just may not be as effective. (I know this is not
true for chemo shots, though-- the ones that need to be given IV are
deleterious if given sub-q, but maybe that is the only exception).

Thanks for asking,
Michelle

I really like that - memories will warm the heart rather than break it. That
time is still to come for so many of us -- my Bessie and Daisy -- it will be a
while. But one of my kids here at school was talking to me about Daisy, who
was one of our Library Cats - and he said something I just loved -- "Daisy will
never leave my memory. She was a cool cat" And he was right - but the memory
will change and some day warm my heart.

Hi, Michelle - yeah.. that's what I was thinking, too - but I am
wondering what's causing kidney infections - do you think doxi is a good
antibiotics for this? My vet think so..but always want a second
opinion..

Hideyo, from the numbers it looks like his WBC has been high even since
November 1. Is it possible he has a severe kidney infection and that is
what is causing the high kidney values and the anemia (since kidney
problems can cause anemia)?

It is better to do it IV because this ensures it gets everywhere it is
supposed to go. It is what the drug company says to do. But my vet said that if
 a
drug can be given IV, then it is safe to give it sub-q or IM, just potentially
 not as effective.

I think it is fine to combine it with interferon.

I just don't know why everyone has become so anemic!!! It's driving me

What could it be? Rikki tested all the parasites and it's negative, too.
Though his ARF is causing anemia, probably in his case..

another prayer for my ayumi and need suggestion

2006-11-16 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto
It seems that - it's always more with me. .but I need to ask you for a
big prayers and support for my baby ayumi -

She has been having really bad gum/mouth ulcers and she can't really eat
most of the time - the vet feels that she will feel better after the
dental, but I had resisted in because she has had pre-existing heart
condition (the vet thinks it's much better now), anemic (cause unknown -
other than the benezeprail made her very anemic once to HCT 20 now it's
stagnant around 25 to 26 or so at this point) - one time, it seems that
her kidney function ,BUN was increased, now it seems to be normal.. also
her BP is very low - between 65 to 80 - and also I lost 4 cats to fip,
now Rikki is having ARF with unknown cause (FIP?) - I am very nervous
about whether I should do a dental for her --- it's tentatively
scheduled for tomorrow -but I am debating.. due to low BP, and anethesic
can even lower it during the surgery,, I am so nerovous about it - the
vet suggested that I use predisolone to reduce inflammation, but I have
not tried it-

Please share your thought whether I should do dental for her tomorr0w -
on and off she can eat very well..which is odd - she is my very first
cat I brought form Japan and she means the world to me .. any insight
is appreciated.

Hey Tonya,

I'm sorry I have been so late in answering your post.
I am too darn busy right now for my own good!

No, the dog does not chase the other dogs or the cats.
Her ears kind of perk up when she sees the cats run
by, but that's it. She's VERY docile, but does play
with our other puppy, who's about a year and a half
now. He's an Akita mix. We also thought our female
Akita mix would not get along with her, but the three
seem to get along fine surprisingly. She's just so
quiet right now. All she wants to do is sleep when we
let her in. She sleeps so hard, she snores. I think
she went through hell before we found her, because of
the way she acts. When my husband walks her though,
she's great. Better than the other two troublemakers.
lol. We need to take her to the vet to get her
fixed, but have just not had the money. We plan on
taking her in the next three weeks, or sooner if by
some magical chance, a few hundred dollars drops into
our laps. I can send out some pics to anyone who's
interested in seeing her and maybe you guys can tell
me if you think she's a pit bull. I think she looks a
lot like a Staffordshire (sp?) pit.

Hi, everyone, I have a couple of kitties who are not feeling too well and I
need you to send them positive energy and white beam of light - when you
lose more than one kitties to FIP.. you become so paranoid.. when they
sneeze, run fever.. you think they have FIP - and I am so tired of being
fearful of this disease - my older boy Rikki has lot lots of weight and he
is anemic and I am a bit freaking out, and my ayumi has mouth sore and can't
really eat and lost lots of weight and am not sure whether I should do a
dental for her for certain conditions that she is in right now.. and my new
rescued boy Toni, has had sneeze and running fever today - and am a little
bit paranoid and worried.

Please pray all of the babies are just going to be fine.

i'm sorry that you had to find crash's and sid's that way, sherry, but
am so glad that you did--perhaps maizee knew that her mom was one of
those special ones who could handle the particular difficulties that a
place like sid's present, and sent you there as a gift to all those
kitties who most need love.. ..

Hi, everyone, I have a couple of kitties who are not feeling too well and I
need you to send them positive energy and white beam of light – when you lose
more than one kitties to FIP.. you become so paranoid.. when they sneeze, run
fever.. you think they have FIP – and I am so tired of being fearful of this
disease – my older boy Rikki has lot lots of weight and he is anemic and I am a
bit freaking out, and my ayumi has mouth sore and can’t really eat and lost
lots of weight and am not sure whether I should do a dental for her for certain
conditions that she is in right now.. and my new rescued boy Toni, has had
sneeze and running fever today – and am a little bit paranoid and worried.

Please pray all of the babies are just going to be fine.

Re: Reliability of SNAP tests

2006-11-16 Thread TenHouseCats

idexx is only ONE of the companies that makes SNAP tests--there are a
number of brands out there that are considerable less expensive, and
i've never seen if there's any correlation between incorrect results
and brand.

Re: need prayers

2006-11-16 Thread dede hicken
Dear Hideyo,

I have been following your posts, and know the anguish
you have felt over your kitties. I too, do rescue,
and can relate. My good friend called last night.
She is also into rescue. Last month she accidently
exposed her cats to distemper. She lost 35. It broke
all our hearts. Anyway, she was doing dishes, and
heard the unmistakable meewing of newborns. One of
her females during all the illness had been pregnant
when brought in. She gave birth to 2. One died
within hours. We are on our way to vets this AM.

You kind of have to keep things in perspective. Cats
in the wild live only 2 or 3 yrs. If you bring them
home, and they die, at least they have had loving
hands stroking them, a warm bed, medicine to ease
their pain, and if necessary help in going to the
bridge. Don't be too hard on yourself. You are doing
great things!!

I will keep you in my prayers,
Dede
