New cat on the block
Hi Ashley! I'm glad you found this site. Your vet is wrong - though it's true that there is no cure for FeLV, it's certainly not a waste of money to keep an otherwise healthy, happy kitty alive and well. So I'm glad you didn't take his recommendation to put Mr. Kitten to sleep. True, it gets expensive, and you probably should invest in high-quality food (many people on this list recommend Innova) and the experts here will tell you what supplements to give Mr. Kitten to keep his immune system strong. But at four, your cat has reached and passed a major milestone (our little guy died at 11 months and the latest cat we rescued from the SPCA is thankfully, not FeLV+). You won't find a better educated, more sympathetic and caring group of people than on this list. Best wishes for the continued good health of Mr. Kitten! Peggy

Dear Anne, I am so sorry for your loss. Having recently lost my little Scooter, I can say I know how it feels, though he wasn't with us as long as your Jimmy. What a sweet poem. The words are so true - in time the pain lessens and the thought of him will bring a soft smile rather than tears. How wonderful to have him with you for so long. Peggy

Dear Anne, My heart goes out to you. You did the right thing. When you know that your baby is suffering past the point of enjoying life anymore, it is time to let him go. You were indeed fortunate to have him so long and he was fortunate to have you give him such loving care. Re: Getting a kitty to eat
Heh, I had a funny bread story happen last night. I was trying to make toast for a sandwich. I put two slices of bread in the toaster, turn my back and when I turn back around, my little scamp of a lynx point kitten had grabbed one of the slices out of the toaster and was chowing down on it. I took the remains away from him and threw them away, went to the microwave (where I am keeping the bread as they haven't figured out how to open it yet) and got another piece of bread. I turned back around and sure enough, he had grabbed the other piece. So this time I stood by the toaster while the toast was toasting. Crazy kitties! Anne, Hideyo, Jimi and Lizzie - Transitions and loss
Anne, Hideyo and to all of us who love so well, My deepest condolences on your loss. We all feel your pain of physical separation. It matters not whether it's 8 short months or 10 short years, we are never truly ready to say goodbye. I'm am constantly seeking answers and assistance to help me cope with such heart heavy loss. I'm still not clear, perhaps I'll never be, but I know it has to do with the law of balance. What fills up, must empty; joy is tempered with sorrow. Those of us with open hearts and arms seem to suffer the most. It helps me to always remember that the suffering we bare is commiserate with the bliss we experience. The simple bliss of loving, of nurturing, of respecting and sharing our lives with those that give all those things in return. I recently read something that keeps going through my mind. Something about transitions... The transition from infancy to childhood; from childhood to adulthood; from adulthood to old age and infirmary, and then the final stage of transition to the spiritual plane. Of course so many of our babies don't complete all the earthly transitions of development. Perhaps these special beings are evolved enough to not require all that each transition has to teach us. Perhaps our life spans are different because none of them need as much earthly time to accomplish their goals. In any case, being forced to deal with their loss has helped me see that they never truly leave us. Whatever our beliefs, it's obvious through loving observation that other species usually have a different comprehension about what is important in life. They live in the moment and don't dwell on regrets. Certainly they are more accepting of what life sends their way. I have resolved to be grateful for all they have to teach me. To celebrate each moment I share with them in the physical and remember that whatever form it takes, that celebration continues as long as we hold them in our hearts. Dying is not the enemy; ignorance and indifference are. As long as we remain open to all they have to give us, our sorrow will never be in vain. Much love to you in your grief, my tears and prayers are with you, Nina

Re: New cat on the block
Welcome to the list! Mr. Kitten sounds like he has a good mom. I think many vets just refuse to learn new things. Just out of curiosity, has the vet that told you to euthanise Mr. Kitten ever given him any vaccines? If so, can you tell me where he gave them (neck, scruff, side, leg)? I ask because if he's still giving vaccines in the scruff of the neck, he's obviously just someone who refuses to embrace new technology and studies and is just a bad vet for not continuing to work on his education. The most important thing is to feed the very best quality food you can afford, like Wellness, Innova, Chicken Soup, or other super-premium brands. Cat food should never contain corn or corn ingredients. After that, then you start adding general immune boosting supplements (same as you would take to boost YOUR immune system) like Vitamin C, Lysine, B Complex Vitamins, etc. Then you consider adding a FELV specific treatment, like Interferon, Acemannan, or Immunoregulin. Lots of it is just plain good nutrition, and I don't think any vet could argue with adding extra immune boosting vitamins and minerals to an animal's diet! Re: add Pogo to the CLS list please question about interferon
I'm sorry for your loss of Pogo. The cost of the interferon highly depends on the generosity of your vet. My vet bought a vial of the human Interferon-A (the stuff that you give to the cats, except BEFORE it's diluted), and made me a whole saline bag full for $20 a few years back (he froze the rest and sold it to other customers, presumably). It really shouldn't cost MUCH more than the cost of the actual vial of Interferon-A (brand names can be IntronA or Roferon-A) and the cost of the bags of saline, which, depending on what pharmacy your vet uses, will vary. My local Pharmacy says a vial of NON diluted Roferon-A (it;s a powder) goes for $208.00. Mind you that makes several BAGS of reconstituted diluted Interferon for oral use in pets. I forget now how many bags it makes, my vet said they can dilute it once, and freeze it, and then off that dilution, they make more bags full. Someone else on the list could probably tell you for sure how that works. I used to have the Island Pharmacy webpage for it but can't find it now. Re: New cat on the block
Hi Ashley, I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Kitten is FeLV+, but happy you have found us. The two most important things you can do to keep Mr. Kitten healthy is to keep him stress-free and to get him on a great diet, which includes immune-boosting supplements. Many of us feed our kitties Innova Evo, which has no grains as cats cannot process grains, but there are other good cat foods out there. Pretty much anything you can buy at Wal-Mart and most of what you can buy at Petco or Petsmart are not good foods. The good foods are usually found at pet boutiques and online. Supplements that people usually use are L-lysine (without the propynol glycol additive) and Vitamin C, but there are others. Again, welcome to the group Ashley, and I hope that Mr. Kitten has many long years ahead of him! :) Wendy Dallas, Tx __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: New cat on the block
Mr. Kitten has not received any vaccines since being diagnosed. He did receive a Prednisone shot that was administered in his neck, but I don't know if that is the normal spot for that injection or not. I live in a smaller town so it's hard to find a wide range of vets, expecially ones that are interested in handling Felv+ cats, but I'm working on it. (had to cage her for a few days to keep the silly girl from hurting herself again). at her checkup the vet is going to discuss interferon for the whole herd. i would apreciate any sugestions and information ya'll have on the meds and if theres any place i might be able to buy them cheaper than through the vet. all i know right now is that the initial cost is high especially since i have 7 cats. thanks to all of you for being here. Re: add Pogo to the CLS list please question about interferon
yes they are all FeLV+ they are about 1 1/2 years old and were alltogether when i started fostering them at around 3 weeks old. Pogo was my special kitty. she would eat popcorn and drink coffee with me if i didnt watch her andhad the moste intesnse attitude in the house. my son misses her carrying marbles around the house to play with. "pogo's lost her marbles" was his favorite comment. we were suprised she was the first to get sick since she was alwase so active and intense. she didnt show any signs until the day we took her to the fist vet. within the week she was gone. thank you all for the words of kindness and suport. Clarissa,I am so sorry to hear that you guys lost Pogo. Areall 7 of your furbabies FeLV+?:)Wendy__ Dave vs. Carl: The Insignificant Championship Series. Who will win?
Re: New cat on the block
Nothing should ever be given in the neck on cats. They are prone to injection site sarcoma, in other words, a big cancerous tumor can grow in the location of any injections. Happens in every 1 in 1000 to 1 in 1 cats (studies vary on the frequency). Since you can't amputate the neck, giving it in that location equals instant death sentence for any cat that gets a sarcoma there (whereas if it's given in the lower leg, as it should be, you can amputate the leg and save the cat). But, that proves my suspicions, yes, your vet is VERY outdated and does NOT keep up with current protocols. I suggest a different vet. Ask them Now if you were going to give my cat a vaccine, where would you administer that, in the scruff? If they says yes, forget that vet, try again. Remember though, just because you may find one that is current on vaccination protocol, doesn't mean they will be current on FELV treatment, it's just SOMEWHERE to start. Re: Please add Jimi Too Cool to the CLS
Dear Michelle, Phaewryn, Kelly, Sally, Dianne (and Asia), Del, Diane R., Wendy, Sherry, Barb, Marylyn, Gina, Peggy, Leah, Kelley, Sheila, and Belinda, (I hope I didn't omit anyone) Thank you all so much for your support and gentle condolences and for sending such love to Jimi Too Cool. I am sure he can feel it. I read all your messages and cried and felt peace and comfort, too. I am very touched and overwhelmed and grateful. You are all the most caring people. I hope to write more in a bit, once I have felt better but for now, I did want to write to Peggy. Peggy, you have my sympathy on the loss of your Scooter. I did manage to read some of your posts because he also suffered from stomatitis, correct? I am sorry that I missed your post that he had passed away. I am so far behind in posts on all my lists, unfortunately. Hugs and love to you all, bless you, Anne and Simms and Sophie with Jimi Too Cool in spirit, always
