2006-08-24 Thread Joan Doljan
Tonya,     I am so sorry. I have been busy with kitten season and have not posted much lately. I always thought Popeye was such a cute name I always remembered posts about him. I am sure things will get better and the sadness will pass. I suspect there will always be an empty place in your heart for him, but I am sure, another little guy or gal will come along and fill it up, just a little bit,     Take care,     Joancatatonya <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This never made it to the list.  I wrote it Friday night I think.   From: catatonya Date: 08/20/06 13:46:10 To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Popeye has gone to the bridge.      Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.  It has just been a horrible weekend.  As a teacher we are not supposed to take a day off school the first week unless
it's an 'extreme emergency'.  I followed protocol, called my assistant principal twice and got no return call.  Called my absence in and had an approved personal day form in my mailbox before I took Popeye into the vet on Friday morning.     We went back and forth on what to do and then decided to wait for the thyroid test to come in on Saturday morning.  Meanwhile they had me bring him home thinking it was less stressful for him here.  However, he could not breathe, so I called the vet back and was arranging to take him back in.  In the meantime at 3:00 (when our school day is over) I received a "corrected form" from my new principal stating that the absence was unexcused and I was being docked for the day.     Those of you who know my history know that this was enough to put me over the edge.  This is a brand new principal and I was just in shock.  Meanwhile the vet said that if they
hyper-t came back as treatable Popeye was going to have to be hospitalized on oxygen for several days at least... I told the vet that my principal had just docked me for the day and was obviously not going to work with me on getting him to the vet (who opens at 8:00, when I'm supposed to be at work at 7:15).   Plus my mobile vet was going out of town for the weekend, and if I waited until Saturday I would have had to take him in to have him euthanized.  I was so hysterical by that time that I just called Dr. Love, and she said she would come by and look at him.  She said he was not going to make it without oxygen and quite a few days of hospitalization if the test came back positive for hyper-t.  So I let him go.     I have just been in bed crying ever since.  I did call my principal and she said she would 'discuss it with human resources' on Monday.  It's a long story, and I wrote it all out because I
plan to get my psychiatrist to write a letter excusing the day as a sick day for mental illness or filing a grievance.  I just cannot believe someone would be so cruel.  I have been with the system longer than this new principal and I have NEVER had a principal give me a problem when I had a sick animal.  If you want to see the letter and have any advice I will send it to you personally.     Michelle, I thought being an attorney you might have some advice?  I don't really know your area of expertise.  Anyway, I am a mess and don't know how I'm going to make it through work tomorrow.  It's like on top of the death I realize I have at least the rest of this year to work with someone who kicked me in the teeth on what was already a horrible day.  I don't see how I can face her.  How do you deal with people like that?     Popeye's passing was very peaceful.  Dr. Love gave
him a sedative and found the vein right away.  He was basically unconscious when she administered the drug.  I wrapped him in a towel and slept with him that night and took him to my regular vet's to be picked up by the crematorium.  I believe Popeye would have been 14 in November.     The thyroid test did come back negative, and Dr. Pruitt called me Saturday morning and said I had made the right decision.  She believes he had thrown a blood clot (thrombosis???) in his lung.  If I had euthanized him and then found out it was treatable I guess I would have been in worse shape than I am now.  Please pray for me.     Tonyawendy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: If Popeye is hyper-T, the meds can reverse some of thedamage to the heart if the heart problems
are relatedto the hyper-T. You should use the transdermal gel(rubbed into the ear) because of the difficulty ingiving Popeye meds. He's emaciated, has open sores all over his body, hair loss from who knows what, and limping on his right rear leg. Yesterday he was in an area that, had I been prepared, I could have gotten a net over him. The feral group I belong to convinced me not to try to net him, since he's an adult intact Tom, even though he's sick. I was very lucky to find someone
to borrow a drop trap from and the good news is, I got him tonight. The bad news is, he's even sadder looking up close. He was bleeding from the nose and his drool contained blood too. The vet's office where I take ferals to agreed to see him if I bring him in first thing tomorrow. I'm sick with worry over how bad he looks. I'm afraid she's going to tell me to pts. Please pray that whatever is going on with Ceaser, it's something he can recover from. Thanks everyone, I know how much power this group has, and as always, I appreciate your support,Nina

to be able to get them out… but finally using a little fish net to get one by one out – they were only 6 weeks old, one calico, one tabby and one turtleshell (?) and they are all so cute.     The one sad thing is that their mama came to look for the babies while we were under the crawl space, she was so worried about us doing something to the babies.. one time, I thought we should just leave and have the mama take care of the babies and I worry that later on, she might take babies some other crawl space near there (there a few, unfortunately), and people might close the crawl space without knowing that they were there.. the mama came back several times (while we were there
as we were there for about 5 hours).. I felt very bad for mama but I decided to take the babies from her..     I tried to trap the mama kitty last night but I couldn’t – there are several kitties there.. I trapped one who looked like mama.. but she must be from mama’s previous litter – she is less than a year old..     Anyway, I wanted to ask you to pray that I will be able
to catch mama soon (I probably could, if I don’t mind catching all other kitties who live there.. but I don’t know where I could put them now as I am running out of crate) --- and the mama will stay safe and she will not be worrying too much about their babies. I am heartbroken for the mama –I feel very badly for taking the babies from their mama…I know that this is probably the right thing.. but I still cannot not think about the mama…

Glad you are back!     Joan[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all,      Wanted to let you know I'm back after 6-7 weeks of hell. From Feb. 28th through the current time. My home and rescue was being relocated on some property with about 3 acres.     I owned a very nice huge manufactured home with additions and covered decks that were damaged by the mobile home movers in
transit. They are being sued of course. We have a contractor coming on the 25th of April to start repairing all the damages. The damages are unbelievable but at least we are able to live in the home. You name it it is damaged. My home sat until the latter part of March, wasn't ready until the first week of April to live in. When it was supposed to be moved 1st of March. Yes, I'm a little pissed putting it mildly. At least we have water and heat.     Due to the stress of my Siamese being in boarding I lost one that broke my heart. All were Vet checked prior and were in perfect health. They had been in boarding since the 27th of Feb. I hold the mobile home movers responsible for this. My home was supposed to be moved on the 1st of March which didn't happen. So the kitties were in boarding over 18 days until we lost my "Sam" then we yanked them all out and took them to the motel we were staying out. I could tell I was going to lose a few more if I didn't do so. Yes, we did sneak them all in the room. Told housekeeping we do our own cleaning and such. We paid an extra $150 for a deposit to have them. They knew we had Siameses but didn't know how many. A few of you know what I have been going through. It has been hell for my husband and myself. Things are starting to get better but my heart still aches for the loss of my Sam. I am glad to say I was able to bring him home to bury him on our
new property. Thank god it was raining that day because while I was burying him I was crying my eyeballs out. He didn't have to die but I knew in my heart that it was stress and anxiety that got him. The amazing thing was on our way to see the cats before taking them to the room there was a beautiful rainbow that afternoon. My husband commented afterwards that it was Sam passing and going to the bridge.     So reality is I'm back and hope to get my cattery built when the funds become available.     P.S. Del,     I am so sorry. stopped showing up to eat.  I found him under the house Thursday morning, he had probably died the day before, don't know of what, we buried him in the back yard. An opossum or something had snacked on him after he had died as there was no blood there, quite gruesome.  I'm very upset about it and it's my fault, I should have looked for him earlier and maybe could have saved him.      Thanks, Del

It seems like everything I am trying is getting blocked or messed up and I am barely holding it together. I lost my baby Frankie to anemia back in 1995 (my then vet didn't know hardly anthing about FeLV and how to treat anything). He was at 6 (his count), still eating and looking good, he still weighted about 17lbs., the only reason I took him in was because he had changed his nightly routine and his breathing seemed labored that day. I just had a gut feeling something was wrong. My vet was amazed he was still alive. She wanted me to euthanize him right then and I told her no way. He did pass that night at home.So this is really scaring me

His gums are getting pale though and he is sleepingalot and not eating very good. My vet is ordering epogen and we aregoing to be starting him on that. One thing I forgot to ask her is ifit is non-regenerative, will do that today. His bloodwork other thanthat was pretty good, although there was one other thing that was offand I will get copies
faxed to me so I can see what that was. He hadxrays a week ago Monday and everything there looked OK.Bailey is 10 years old and has been positive since 5 months of age.Last year he developed pretty bad stomastisis and after tryingeverything under the sun (antibiotics, acupunture, chinese herbs) wefinally pulled all but his canines and tiny teeth in between them. This seemed to take care of the problem until within the lat couple ofmonths. I noticed he wasn't eating as good and that's when we didthis last blood work and found the anemia and that his mouth wasinflamed again. He has been on doxy and busperone and I added antirobe the last couple of days with the vets OK, and his mouth looks nice and healed but his gums are pretty pale. I syringe fed him for a few days and he is eating a bit on his own. If he doesn't pick up his eating today it will be back to syringing again which he really hates. He is on raw which he loves

They also found that the dominant cats were the ones that were more likely to be FIV infected. Calico female cats always carry one copy of the orange gene  (orange males also have only one copy, because the orange color is X linked and males have only one X chromosome). Is it possible that cats carrying the orange gene are more likely to defend their territories and to engage in cat fights?  Cat bites, due almost always from territorial fighting, are the primary mode of FIV transmission. My sort-of-feral Eduardo has been outside with the outside cats this summer.  He's very passive and he has a lot of trouble with Tramp who is a big bully.  He was doing well in the little zone he had carved out for himself, but he hasn't been home in over a week.  I think it was he who ran from a cat fight I broke up (naturally Tramp was involved) but I couldn't really see; all I saw was a black behind running.  My neighbor claims she's seen him in the bushes, but he is not coming when I call him (we had reached the point where he would) and I have not seen him.  I put all the outside cats in the garage yesterday and today so I'm hoping, hoping that he feesl safe enough to come home.  I miss him so.  I can't stand having outside cats; I'm not looking forward to the heating bill, but I will be delighted when the weather turns cold enough that they don't want to leave their beds by the furnace.

keep a good thought for my little girl.

The cytology on the fluid is not back and now the lab is saying they may not have completed it until tomorrow.  Neither vet thinks it looks like FIP fluid; it's clear and reasonably thin.  Tater's bloodwork is all normal (except for the 40,000 WBC).  Nothing looks out of place on an ultrasound. His heart sounds perfect; liver and kidney function are normal. He does has a positive Corona virus titre, but probably all my cats do.

He was retested for FeVL/FIV and still negative (although they are drawing out a vial of belly fluid and are going to test with that, too).

Everyone is puzzled and waiting to see what the cytology report shows.  The two main contenders I've been given are FIP or lymphoma.

We're considering draining the belly and doing exploratory surgery.

Oh, he is also not pooping.

Has anyone ever heard of or been through anything like this?  I'm trying not to panic, but it's getting harder by the day.

Michelle or Nina, you both imported feline interferon, correct?  How long did it take (the vet has to make the application to the FDA (or is it USDA?), right?).  I have to check some more; I think I read of experimental treatment for FIP with feline interferon.

I just can't think what can possibly be going on and why he can be filling up like this and still seem so well; I mean, if he wasn't a balloon, one really wouldn't think anything was wrong with him.  When Little Evie had wet FIP, she was in absolute agony when her belly was touched.

After nearly a week of you-know-what for Steve and I …Georgie was found safe and sound late Saturday night…I'm sparing the details but if anyone wants the story, let me know. He is recouping from his adventure. He's thinner (and smaller than I remembered) but overall looks good and appears healthy. We are watching him closely and loving him tons. He appears to have a better appreciation for his family. We are getting lots of kisses and he is more vocal now. I took yesterday off just to love him!!
Thanks everyone for your thoughts, prayers and support during this difficult time.

Here's the story...
To make a long story short, we got a call on Saturday that led us near St. George's church (can you believe?). It wasn't him but my husband had a feeling. Late that night (around 9:30) after passing out flyers and looking for him we went home. My husband went to water our garden and I decided to go back and sit on the patio. I had been putting food out and the food in the front and back were nearly empty. We decided to move the food so we could see out our bedroom window to see who was eating it. As soon as I did, we heard a meow coming from the dark sidewalk. I wasn't sure if it was Georgie or not but I got down on my knees and called him. He came close and I tried to grab him but he ran off. He didn't go very far and howled/meowed. I called him again and jingled his food. He came close. I picked him up. I handed him off to my husband (who stated he wasn't go to let him go for his life) and ran to the front to get
his carrier. We shoved him in it and then took him to the front to see if it was him. After confirming certain details, we realized it was indeed our Georgie and we jumped up/down and hugged each other and realized what a blessing we received.
We went to St. George's church Sunday morning. My husband didn't have a dry eye the entire mass.=00

Dear Friends,

I tried to get thru my overflowing (months!) of email and it just wasn't going to happen.  I can see that we have suffered some terrible losses and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost a beloved companion; I hope your memories will comfort you.  It also seems that we have new members; the reason for finding this group is always sad, but you will never find a group of more loving, caring friends.

Some of you might remember that last winter my husband was diagnosed with multiple aneurysms; the most serious was in his abdomen and after weeks of tests and referrals, he was scheduled for surgery because the abdominal aneurysm was felt to be in danger of rupture.  He had that surgery and came through it well.  He was home for about a week and one morning we were up having coffee and he suddenly got this really strange look on his face; I asked if he needed pain medication and he said, "no; I'm blind". OK; bit of a heart-stopper there. He was rushed to the ER and it was finally determined that his left carotid artery was completely blocked and he'd actually had blood flow stop temporarily.  He was transferred by ambulance back to the hospital in Hartford where he had his prior surgery (we live about 30 miles east) and had emergency surgery to clean out the artery.  I repeatedly asked how this could have been missed after all the screening that was done
pre-surgery since he is a high-risk patient (diabetic and known cardiac blockage).  I really got no answers and I am angry to this day that he could easily have died or been left permanently impaired.  His sight did return and we feel fortunate, but once again, I feel my trust in the medical community erode a bit further.  We absolutely did not intend to sue anyone; we simply wanted to be sure that absolutely everything that he SHOULD be screened for (how can you ask for it if you don't know about it?) he was screened for.  He's left with some numbness on one side of his face that primarily bothers him when he trims his beard (says it feels weird), and a big scar from behind his ear to his collar bone; big deal, right? I told him it just makes him look tough!  I was out of work for a bit caring for him (he's now back to work, too) and came back to a nightmare of project deadlines, office moves, a new boss, and a generally toxic workplace!

On the kitty front, Brownie (FIV+) had both his eyes removed and he is like a different cat!  He rubs his head all over now; it obviously hurt too much to do it before.  I will never use the vet who initially screened him again.

Tater Tot is in the hospital on an IV and being evaluated.  He had a mild cold about 2 weeks ago and I took him in and we decided to give sub-q fluids and Lysine since he does have herpes and it just seemed to be a particularly bad flare-up (I was given a sample of a new veterinary lysine gel to try and evaluate; thumbs down!  It was way too think and 500mg worth was a really big blob that he was having no part of; so stick to the capsules until they reformulate, is my advice!).  Since then, I've observed him straining to poop and passing tiny little stools and by this weekend it was obvious that fluid was collecting in his belly.  The aspirate didn't look like typical FIP fluid, but it's being sent out and bloodwork and many other tests are being done.  My heart is just breaking for him; he's only six years old and been sick so much of his life.  They've already warned me that whatever is going on is not good but I just pray that it's
treatable.  Please think good thoughts for him.

It's been a hot, muggy and miserable summer here in the Northeast and I am having a terrible flea outbreak; I swear that I have some mutant strain of super-fleas that nothing will kill!  I've used Borax successfully for years, and at one point (in a room I have sealed off) they were jumping out of it!  I'd left an absurd amount on the floor (like half an inch; thinking, "I WILL kill you") and I went in to check and vacuum it up after a few DAYS and they were leaping out of it biting me!  I swear they were bigger and stronger than before I put the Borax down!  I've had to use Frontline on everyone (Program for the ferals because I can slip it into their food) which I hate to do because I think it's so dangerous (it takes fingernail polish off!!!) but I have 3 cats who get terrible dermatitis from flea bites and I couldn't let them be miserable, but I really, really don't like using it.

So, that's what I've been up to!  2005 officially sucks!

A big, group hug to everyone and headbutts to all the kitties!

Macarena,

I am so sorry about your nephew's loss and of course yours.  The loss of Kurt reminds me of my Grayson who died this winter. He was my first cat and led me to the path I am following now.  He was so smart and loving. He adopted me when he was outside and wound his way into my heart and home.  He used to call me to bed and then gently lie on my head all night. In the morning, if he felt I overslept he would gently tap my face with his paw, but if I did not wake up, out came the claws (gentle but persistant).

I know the sadness one can feel when their special ones leave.  It is an aloneness which nevr seems to go completely away.  But it also leaves a tender memory which remains in your heart forever.

Take care,

Question from Crystal:Cats are all too
often surrendered because "owner is pregnant" or "new baby." People are
paranoid about toxoplasmosis (never mind that raw meat is a greater hazard
than cat litter) and there are STILL superstitions attached to cats and
babies.I definitely think humane education is a must for the medical
profession (who are often in a position to allay fears) but in the meantime
how do we keep cats from losing their homes once a baby
  arrives?

  Response from Dr Emily
  Weiss:

  What a
  wonderful question!  And what a
wonderful way for us to help our communities view shelters as resources.

I suggest that you work on developing a
workshop--to be held in a public facility such as a library, University or
other area-focusing on introducing a pet to a new baby.
We know that clients often relinquish due to clashes, or perceived
clashes, between a new child and the family pet.  By capturing the clients before the
birth of their child, we can help decrease the chances of
  relinquishment.

  Response from Best Friends
  Network:
This is an issue that we deal with on a regular
basis.  We completely agree that education is the key, especially in the
medical field.  Many times it's the doctor that tells the expectant
mother that the cat must go!  There is some great information
on Cornell University's website on toxoplasmosis that we hope you
will find helpful in dispelling rumors and educational on how to prevent the
spread of toxoplasmosis to adults, children and babies:  http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/resources/brochure/toxo.html On the other end, dogs are also given the boot when the
baby arrives for many of the same fears.  The information below can
be applied to both cats and dogs.
The suggestions given below are from the books Cat Love
and Twisted Whiskers, written by Pam Johnson-Bennet, a feline
behaviorconsultant. BEFORE THE BABY ARRIVES It may
seem that your pets are jealous of your new baby, but really they're just
anxious. Pets hate change, and so any change leads to anxiety. Bringing
in a new baby is an enormous change - not just for the parents, but also for
their pets! Here are some helpful suggestions:
  * Have your cats/dogs spayed or neutered beforehand
(spaying/neutering will make your pets calmer).* Put a little of whatever
creams or powder you will use on your baby on yourself, so that your pet will
become used to that scent.* Play audio tapes of baby sounds (especially
crying) before the baby is born. Start on a low volume, then increase the
volume slowly (not deafening, though). Play with and stroke your pet
while you play the tapes, so he/she will associate baby crying with good
feelings).* Let your pet investigate the new baby furniture. (It can
always be wiped off later.) Play with and caress your pet during
these times as well.* Don't paint the nursery, install new carpet and
bring in new furniture all at once. Remember, pets, especially cats, hate
change! But, they will adjust if you go slowly.* To dissuade your
cats from sleeping in the baby's crib, set up empty soda cans in the crib with
a few pennies in each. When your kitties jump in and knock over the cans,
they'll be startled by the noise.* If you have a friend with a baby,
invite them over so that your pet can get adjusted to the sight and sound of a
baby. Caress and play with your pet while your visitors are present.*
The closer the due date, the more important it is to maintain your regular
routines with your pets. * Do not run out and declaw your kitty! Cats
only scratch when they feel they are in danger, so declawing is
unnecessary. Declawing is also traumatic and painful for cats (for more
info, please visit www.pawproject.org). Cats with claws do
fine around babies and children. They are curious animals, so they'll
often come close to investigate, but that's all.
WHEN THE BABY COMES HOME* Feed your pet his favorite meal.* Try
to give your cats and dogs a little extra attention after the baby
arrives.* When your pet is calm, let her sniff your baby and the baby's
things. She will not harm the baby - she's just curious. Try to remain calm
  yourself, b

He has stopped eating three days ago. I have force fed him and he is throwing it all back up. He has also been fed intravenously as well. He has loss so much weight as well.
He was about 15 yrs old when I got him. He was in poor health and all. He was Hyper-T so that didn't help matters. He had 7 claws imbedded into his pads (minor surgery) and Ear Mites prior to me getting him.
I'm going to do this without my husband around because he always makes it harder. (he is a softy)

Hideyo,
I have not been following the responses to your posts (am in the process of moving and do not have the time or energy). But my Simon had sky-high billirubin levels (25!), so here is some advice:

1. Denasyl (sp?) is better/stroonger than milk thistle, I think, for the liver. It comes from vets. But it is the same thing as SAMe, which you can get at the health food store. It can probably be given with milk thistle.

2. Liver so compromised can be from lymphoma, like with Simon, or from cholangiohepatitis, which is treatable with antibiotics, or from hepatic lipidosis, which requires a feeding tube. A biopsy is necessary to tell.  You probably already know this, and maybe already got the biopsy-- again, I didn't read the whole thread so don't know.  Lymphoma would be the worst case scenario, but Simon's bilirubin came down to almost normal with steroids and chemo (he died two months later from anemia).

I have been using Milk Thistle for one of my guys and it is remarkable. I used the brand made by Animal Apawthecary and Bruce hates it, but it seems to keep help with his anemia.  Also, someone at work, has a son who is on Milk Thistle and flourishing.

Hi, everyone – I took George to the vet yesterday afternoon – I was hoping that we could examine him and draw a blood without anesthesia because of his physical weakness – I picked him up and was able to put him a bag with a zipper with no problem, he did not try to scratch me or bite – I felt like he trusted me somehow – but when he was taken to the back to draw a blood, they really couldn’t do it because he was so wiggly – anyway, I really hated the idea of anesthesia, but with the understanding that it’s going to be a plain short one – I went ahead and gave them a permission – I was so scared while waiting, I almost lost one of my FIV boys in the past from the reaction from anesthesia and I lost Suzi from spaying surgery – I was so nervous.

My George did very well – I was so proud of him and he ate last night (really good) and I am hoping that he will not have averse reaction from the procedure.

Anyway, he was tested positive for FIV, which I was not devarsted by – I have already 5 FIV positive guys and they are all chubby happy boys – he only weighed 7.6 lb, he was very skinny – all the blood work came back normal, except his liver – his skin is all jaundice and the values of AST, ALT Total Billirubin are very very high!

My holistic vet had suggested before to use Milk Thistle for Leo when he had a liver problem – I am writing to see if anyone has any suggestions for liver problem.  As I understand that liver is the most important organ, but fortunately, liver has a great recovery capability unlike Kidney (his kidney is normal – yeah!) – anyway, if you have any suggestions, please let me know – I would like to do everything I can do help him!!

PS, he even lets me pet him – I just love my little George!

For statistics, Norman was 5 years old but I don't know how long he was FELV+ (was only initially tested 2 years ago).  It's such a horrible disease, I hope someday some of my money can go to research.

For now, we're going to retest our other three cats, hope they continue to be negative and go from there.   I know there will be more furkids in our lives.

Thank you for listening.

Michelle,

I am so sorry about Bramble. He is though a lucky boy to have found a compassionate person, such as yourself, to help release him from his pain.

Joan.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Bramble is going to the vet in 1 1/2 hours. I came in to find him appearing visually impaired - he couldn't see the piece of chicken and was startled when I put it to his nose - he then had difficulty judging the floor from my knee and was hesitant to get down. He then went into a seizure - writhing around for about 4 minutes and has just done that for another minute about 30mins later. The other 2 cats are scared again.

I'm pretty sure this will have to be a euthansia case today - I am going to push on the flea treatment adverse effects though - but I can say that he is now suffering and I can't let him suffer if they can't do anything.

These decisions hurt so bad but my baby boy without doubt is in the full blown faids stage - his weight is plummeting fast even though he has eaten. I just hope if the vet says the E word and I go ahead that it is right for him. Whilst I think the flea treatment may well have exacerbated this I'm sure the FIV is a lot to blame too. I'll let you know the outcome.

One of my 4 year old babies, a mutt doggy, Corky (mix of Scottie, Westie and Schnauzer) all of sudden started having bloody stools early this morning – or I should say, there really was no stools, just tons and tons of dark red bloods coming out like a flood so much came out that I almost fainted – I never seen so much blood at one place– she has also thrown up – I took her to her the emergency clinic getting some IV and antibiotics – she bleeded there also.  After some testing, they narrowed it down to a couple of things – and they are hoping that fluid therapy and the antibiotics will treat her -  please pray for Cork’s recovery – a poor baby, she is very scared there, she is never out of the house and I really want to be able to bring her home soon!

Also, last Saturday, I rescued a boy kitty who I had been feeding for several months now.  I  noticed that he lost lots of weight (I hadn’t seen him for a couple of weeks) – and I took him to the vet – everything seems to be OK except that on ELISA, he tested positive on FIV – now I am having Cornell Lab to do the western blot (as I had a couple of cats who tested positive on FIV via ELISA, and ended up negative later) – anyway, now I have to figure out where to place him – he must have belonged to someone a long time ago, as he is very friendly and used to people. I talked to Carl (I named him Carl) via AC – Carl told my AC that he used to be an indoor kitty when she was a kitten, and somehow he became an outdoor kitty, and somehow, then he did not have a home anywhere – I asked via AC, if he would like to stay with me and to be an indoor kitty, he said “he would like that very
much” – I hope his lost weight is just a temporary, and I am so praying that the western blot will come back as negative – please also pray for Carl’s well-being, he is such a sweet baby, and he has had a rough life since he had lost home…

I agree. Since most of us screen adopters, I think the same should be for fosterers. I pay attention when someone says a house smells, or their cats are always sick etc.  I never send anyone anywhere unless I have seen the house or facility, or someone I trust has.

JoanCherie A Gabbert <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

We will agree to disagree on this.

I feel when you take on the responsiblity to foster or volunteer, you must take responsibility for your actions and that means if you were negligent in asking questions and being informed about the others in your facility then you are also to blame for the situation. Kess shoudl have known better, true, but the others should have watched and communicated with others, Kess is the President, but that does not mean she knows all and is right in everything she does. Personally I question everyone, and my vet questions me, to make sure I am not in it over my head (mind you she thinks I need a few more). This is the way organizations should be worked and run.

I agree with what your saying as to maybe there should have been a system to have everyone looked at. I just don't feel that all volunteers and fosters should be responsible for this woman's actions. There should have been someone in charge of making sure the numbers were not to high and that the living conditions are in good shape but how can you assume it should be everyone's job. Rescue groups and shelters struggle to get volunteers especially fosters -to assume that they should also have to check or be responsible for someone else's living conditions is insane. Please realize Kess is the President and I think founder of Kitty Kind who knows what she told these people - it is also her responsiblity to show an example. It is not a fosters or volunteers responsibilty to make sure that everything is done right by her. Yes someone should have created a system maybe that can be a thing to follow but Kess also lives no where near most of these people nor should their shared time to
help animals be used to babysit Kess.

We have different views to the ones who are suffering. lets just leave it at that. I am mad at Kess but I also have seen and heard volunteers and foster in pain over this and have opened my mind and tried to put myself in their situation. They might have assumed that someone was in knowledge of her conditions -how could you think these people would have just ignored this.

Has anyone checked on your house, before you got started, so they new you were able to care for animals if need beI bet they did and if they did not then shame on them

Remember Kess has been doing this animal rescue thing for years- You would think she would know what the right thing to do was more than anyone. How do you know they didn't think they were ok or placed in great foster homes like their own. Please try to be a little more opened minded. I believe if they even had the smallest bit of evidence from her that something was wrong someone would have done something.

a lot of those volunteers are amazing kind animal lovers and would never let anything like this happen let alone turn their head like you are suggesting. I think the reason for jail time would be to isolate her from the animal community, she might have done more harm than good and the act of putting dead animals one after another in garbage bags is diplorable. Hi,

I have been keeping track of this discussion and I agree with Gloria.  I do live in that area (although I don't know her or her group).  Rescue groups and individuals, are often so desperate for fosterers, they often they will put animals with anyone (to avoid having them euthanized) without checking the home at all. Many of us who do rescue, have relationships with either local shelters or vets who assist us in the care, euthanization and disposal of sick and dying animals. I agree that you do not keep sick pets with well ones and that  burying that number cats is not a sane act, but I am not sure that it is an intentional criminal act.

Thanks, Mia -for anyone who has been in or near the rescue effort, it's easy to understand how the "overflow" of animals can lead to a difficult situation. Who takes them? Do we turn our eyes and minds away? We did everything we could and and still lymphoma wins another battle. maybe someday people and animals alike will benefit from new technology and treatments.

Sending lots of comforting thoughts to both Fern and Pepsi.

Take care,
Joan[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Fern has been breathing harder due to the cancer in her lungs, but has still been going for short walks, eating up a storm, etc. We took her to the oncologist yesterday and he put a nose tube in her for us to attach to an oxygen machine at home, which we rented.  She did not like the oxygen machine at first so we gave her a half dose of acepromazine to take the edge off her anxiety about it. The ace really made her groggy, and more than 12 hours later she is still groggy. She is eating, but only cat food, not her normal food which she usually inhales like a vacuum.  Her back legs are giving out when she tries to stand, and though she walked outside to go to the bathroom she was wobbly and her back legs collapsed when she tried to squat.  We are extremely worried. We have known she does not have long now, but other than breathing a little hard she really has been acting pretty normal up until after the vet appointment yesterday. The combination of the oxygen and
ace did allow her to breathe normally through the night, which she had not been doing (night seems to be harder for some reason, which apparently is common), but she is somewhat out of it this morning.  The oncologist's office said that the ace could still be affecting her due to her weakened state, as animals in weakened states process meds differently.  We are sad and disturbed by this thought.

Please send energy, prayers, and thoughts to our Fern and hope that she returns to at least how she was a few days ago, at least for a while.

Also, if you have enough prayers an energy to go around, to my horse Pepsi, who is 29 and whose legs have gotten worse in the past few days and is walking very slowly and gingerly.

Thanks,

The (other bit of) good news is that my long-standing vet is starting his own clinic (it's already underway) and is doing housecalls until he opens it!
The bad news is that the other vet I use there, who has a wonderful way with the ferals, will not be accessible--the clinic she's moving to is too far away :>(
They do say what goes around comes around---I don't usually believe it, but it happened in small measure with this guy (doubtless he will regroup soon)

Fwd: [FAN-H] FIP Reasearch

Note: forwarded message attached.--- Begin Message ---

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST

Dear List;

I am please to announce that the "Ring" raffle sponsored by the Orion
Foundation is finally up and going.  There is a picture up on the  website for you
to look at (_www.orionfoundation.com_ (http://www.orionfoundation.com) ) .  The
ring is appraised at $2200 and is a 14+carat blue topaz flanked on either
side  by diamonds.  The funds will go to the Winn Foundation and be earmarked
for  FIP research.  Raffle tickets are $5.00 each and a drawing will be held at
the CFA Annual meeting held in Atlantic City in June (16th-19th).

You can get tickets through me.  You can pay for them by check (made  out to
the Winn Foundation) or through PayPal (if you want to use PayPal, send  me a
private e-mail and let me know).

AND, we desperately need people to help us sell these tickets!  A  sheet has
8 tickets...there are over 2500 people on this list.   Imagine if only 100 of
those folks sold a sheet of tickets that would be  $4000 for FIP research!

Several weeks ago, at the Western Vet Conference, there was a panel on FIP
(thanks to Steve Dale and his "squeaky wheel"  perseverance in keeping this
issue before the veterinary public!).  I think the overall impression was  that
even Pedersen has a renewed interest in FIP research.  WE HAVE TO MAKE  SURE
THAT FUNDING WILL BE AVAILABLE!

Sure...$4,000 is a drop in the bucket, but coming from the grass  roots cat
owners/breeders, it shows the drug companies with their deep  pockets that we
desperately care about finding answers for this disease.   And caring owners
will turn into paying customers if they can develop viable  treatments and
hopefully a cure!

By the end of the summer, we hope to give you the good news that The Orion
Foundation is back in business collecting your donations in it's own name.
Until then, please support this raffle and the Winn Foundation.  Together,  we
can make a difference!

Sincerely,

Dru Milligan
President, Orion Foundation

Nina,

I had a cat that had the same symptoms.  I paid a lot of money for a number of tests and all turned out OK.  Eventually the eye became normal again.

Hoping for the best for Grace.

JoanNina <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
I just posted about how well Grace has been doing. I'm about to lose my mind, I'm so scared. I'm really trying to hold it together and not get ahead of myself, but the thought of losing Grace, right after Jazz... There must be something really wrong with me. Grace has been doing so well, I thought maybe... just maybe...About 2 hours ago I noticed that Grace's left eye's pupil is dilated. It's contracting some in sunlight and getting bigger as the light lessens, but it's definitely larger than her right eye. It doesn't look irritated, no tearing, no signs of abrasion. I ran my fingers over both sides of her eyes and face, the left side doesn't seem any different than the right. It doesn't seem to bother her when I touch that side. She's acting perfectly normal otherwise. In fact the last week or so, she's been such a kitten. Running,
jumping cavorting, chasing great big Kimba Cat around, just having a grand time with life, it's been such a joy to witness. I called my Internist's office and spoke with Michelle. She said it's possible that she got something on her paw and rubbed it over that eye, a plant, or something in the yard that's toxic. I don't think that's it. I don't think there's anything out there that is toxic, and if there is, it's sure taken them a long time to find it. Her other thought was that it's something neurological. Something, (oh shit), pressing on her optic nerve and causing the pupil to dilate. Her sister Molly had a tumor behind, I think the same eye. Her eye started to protrude and then it ruptured when she was being rushed to the ER. If it's any worse by tomorrow, I'm going to go to my vet's and sit in the lobby until she'll see me. Do you think I should take her in even if it remains stable?Has anyone had any
experience with this sort of thing? Any ideas? I really don't think I can take it if I lose my Grace. Please pray that this passes and she's okay. Nina

I haven't posted in a long time as I have no FELV+ kitties anymore and I have been caring for my mother.  Mom passed away on March 20 after a battle with colon cancer.

I took my two cats to the vet today for check-ups and vaccinations.  Carolina seems to be feeling ill tonight.  She had not had any vaccines in 3 years; she got them today along with a deworming pill.  The pill was precautionary as she had vomited undigested food a few times in the last couple of weeks.  She checked out okay as far as temperature, etc.  She had been fine, but she is lethargic and just vomited a little bit of foam.  Anyone know if she might be reacting badly to the vaccine or deworming pill?

I'm panicking a bit as I lost four cats in 3 years, two from FELV.  My hubby thinks that taking cats to the vet makes them get sick and is worried about our pretty girl.

Thanks for any info.

Tigger, my little princess, was doing great on Saturday night after being diagnosed with a blood clot.  She actually started to walk again, and considering that she was FELV + and that she was doing great, I thought that she was going to pull through... then things started going down hill.  She was so weak, and she couldn't walk anymore.  She didn't want to eat... she looked miserable.  So, I made a vet appointment to see if there was anything that could be done.  The vet said that she developed more blood clots and that she wouldn't be able to fight them off.  So I made the decision to help her pass to the bridge.  I just couldn't stand to see my little girl suffer anymore.  Her quality of life would have been very poor...  I couldn't do that to her.

She was such a wonderful little girl.  My little princess.  She will never be forgotten.  She is now free to run and play with her brother, Yellow, and her sister, Blackie, both of which lost the battle to FELV last year.

Petition to REISSUE SPAY & NEUTER Animal Stamp Dear Committee Members:We the undersigned are writing to you asking for the reprinting and continued printing of the sold-out Spay/Neuter stamps, which feature pictures of Samantha the shelter cat and Kirby the shelter dog. These stamps are a wonderful way to raise awareness for the innocent animals who have no voice and suffer the tragic consequences of the animal companion overpopulation crisis due to human ignorance, irresponsibility and neglect. The amount of unnecessary pain, suffering and death inflicted upon our beloved dogs and cats due to overpopulation is incalculable, as are the human misery and monetary cost involved in the rescuing, sheltering, medically treating and all too frequently, killing of surplus animals whose births never
should have happened. Responsible spay/neutering is the humane, sensible approach to resolving this inexcusable failure of society.Perhaps, one day soon, through the efforts of ongoing responsible human intervention, we’ll effectively mandate, on a national level, the spay/neutering of all dogs and cats in this country (excepting those exempted for appropriate reasons). The continued awareness raised by the Spay/Neuter stamps will surely play a prominent role in helping to achieve this morally imperative goal.Respectfully the UNDERSIGNEDhttp://www.thePetitionSite.com

I was able to get a story of my 3 handicapped cats up on a website for special needs animals.  The stories are of Winter (my blind cat), Finley (my one-eyed weirdo cat), and Igloo (the one-eyed, red-faced, something-is-perpetually-wrong-with-her, allergy cat).  Aside from their life stories, there are a lot of pics of them, as well as a few pics of special needs fosters I've cared for...some living happy lives and some with sad endings.  Hope you get a chance to visit the page because I spent a lot of time on it...my digital camera takes crappy pics, so I had to photograph the old fashioned way.  As well, every hit on the page gets a small donation for the shelter I work for.

I hope you enjoy their stories!
