[Felvtalk] Ozzy & Miss Kitty

2012-11-03 Thread Kathryn Green
Well, good news and not so good news.

The cat that originally started all of this, Ozzy, is definitely an
older cat and as I suspected, he tested positive for FIV although neg
for FeLV. As he is obviously a battle veteran and drew blood from the
person who originally rescued him too, indications are he will be
more than happy to fight others and share the virus. He was also
loaded with tape worms which men's Miss Kitty likely has them too so I
have to dose them both for that.

The vet couldn't give me an estimate of Ozzy's age other than to say
he was no spring chicken. Why? Because he has almost NO teeth. One
canine was intact but the rest were broken or missing. He removed a
couple of the broken ones but says there were many that were just
roots and there was nothing he could do short of major surgery. Says
his gums are in surprisingly good condition, he just has no teeth.
Suspect many were broken in fights. It is amazing to me how he puts
away dry cat food - LOTS of it - when he has no teeth!

Technically, a fighter like Oz should be quarantined for the rest of
his life cause of the FIV. If I were to do that it would mean keeping
him in my master bathroom. Not too fond of that idea. Only other
option is to make him an outdoor cat and I don't like that either. If
he starts spraying that will be my only option tho I suspect. Even
tho neutered now he has been around long enuff marking is a natural
thing for him and will likely continue.

Now for the good news. Miss Kitty came thru with a clean bill of
health, got her vaccinations, and goes back in 4 weeks for her
boosters.

Total bill this time around was $168.

Both are now back in the master bathroom while I "gird my loins" and
prepare to dose them for worms. I think Oz will take his in a bit of
canned cat food but Miss Kitty turns her nose up at anything from a
can so hers will have to be a pill. I will let all know if I survive!

[Felvtalk] Ozzy and Miss Kitty

2012-11-01 Thread Kathryn Green
Tomorrow morning Ozzy goes in for neuter, exam, testing and
vaccinations. Following day Miss Kitty goes with me to pick up Ozzy
to get her exam and vaccinations.

Gonna have to rob a bank for this but want to get it done quickly as
Oz is causing some unrest within the ranks. My other cats seem to be
jealous of an intact male and wanna get thru the door to prove they
were here first - or something!

So far they are both doing well.

Since Ozzy has no teeth, even if he fights, he can't spread FIV because FIV is
spread by deep biting during a cat fight.  He can't spread it through a scratch
or through any non-violent contact with any of your cats.  I have about 3 FIV+
cats mixed in with my my regular gang and no one is any the worse for it.
About the spraying, once his hormones go away, even if he sprays occasionally
(and all cats do that when nervous or angry on occasion) it won't smell
terrible.  I have several bad boys who do the spray thing from time to time
just to keep in practice.  It's a matter of pail and mop and that's mostly it.
I use Simple Green Anti-virus cleaning product.  It smells like a cleaning
product when I'm mopping, but leaves the room smelling of nothing and nice and
clean too.  It comes in a half gallon size, is green in color.  There are
several types of Simple Green. The one I use is a concentrate. An ounce (shot
glass for measure) in  2 to 3
gallons of wash water does wonders and I have at least 22 cats in a large
room.  They are NOT polite or well behaved cats either, but I still don't have
to dig the house under.

For more information about FIV+ and mixing positives and negatives together,
you may want to join the FIV2 Yahoo Group and read the files or make contact
with some of the members. Whatever you do, don't allow any vet to sell you the
FIV vaccination.  It turns a cat positive upon testing and will jeopardize
negative cats because some vets and shelters still euthanize FIV+ cats for no
reason except misinformation about the situation.

Great news about Miss Kitty though. Females rarely get FIV because mostly,
males are very polite to them but if the male cat grabs them by the neck too
roughly during mating, it may turn into a bite and therefore infect the cat.
But males don't usually do this. They don't want to kill the female, just
impregnate her.

Re: [Felvtalk] Ozzy & Miss Kitty

2012-11-03 Thread Lee Evans
I have several cats with no teeth who knock back the dry food like it's their
last meal.  Cats don't really chew very much unless they catch a very tough
mouse.  Mostly, they give their food a few chomps and down it goes.  They have
a very high acid content in their stomach that does the rest of the digesting.
If we ate like cats do, we'd be floating like  blimps all the time because our
digestive system depends on mixing saliva with the food to begin digestion in
earnest. If you notice, when you rush a meal to get to work or an appointment,
you end up bloated and uncomfortable for the rest of the day.  At least I do.
But cats, being lazy little critters, just go chomp/gulp and it's over.  Also
the good news.

Kathryn might want to have that last canine removed.  It's not serving any
purpose and to be on the safe side, it's OK for Ozzy not to have it.  Also, at
some point in time, when Ozzy has recovered from all his ordeals and is settled
in, I would recommend that the rotten roots be removed also.  As they decay in
his gums they could lead to infection, either locally or systemic.

Re: [Felvtalk] Ozzy & Miss Kitty

2012-11-03 Thread Lee Evans
No, lol, FIV cannot infect a human being.  You can be chewed on like a rubber
toy and still nothing.  I have been dealing with FIV+ and FeLv+ cats for over
20 years, bitten, scratched and snarled at, pilled them, cleaned up after
them.  I'm still here, relatively healthy and no cat diseases.  You can't catch
a cold from a cat either.  It's just not a take.  Viruses are very specifically
programmed to each species.  I'm sure they do cross species occasionally but
not very often.  That's why chimps used in HIV experiments are a very poor
prototype for trying to develop a human vaccine.  They just don't get the same
effect from HIV virus as humans.  But hey, some vets are so misinformed that
they won't even be able to answer the question.

As for his teeth stumps, the bite has to be DEEP.  He can't bite with stumps of
teeth but as you say, just to be safe, you can have them removed.  It will
benefit Oz and will ease your mind.  Mostly, when neutered cats have a fight in
the house, they smack each other with paws.  If they do mix it up, it's briefly
and toothless cats do no harm.  Around here, FIV is not an issue since it's not
environmental.  I do have a separate sanctuary for 5 of my FIV cats because I
started rescuing around 7 years ago when the information was still hazy about
whether or not it was contagious and I do add contentious cats with teeth to my
FIV group but I really don't think Ozzy would be a candidate for my group if he
were here.  After his hormones go away, he will also be more docile and less
likely to do battle with anything but a mousy.   So keep him where he is.
Don't put him out or send him away.  Just feed him until he's too fat to move
very fast, get
that last canine removed and enjoy the wonderful work you did taking these two
orphans.

Good info and I thank you. I hadn't really thought it all through about him
having almost no teeth - although he does still have that one canine and some
stumps so he isn't a 100% safe Kitty for the other cats. Maybe less worry than
I thought but still the potential.
Marcia's brother was the original rescuer and Ozzy scratched him up quite a bit
tho I don't think he bit him. Does anybody know if FIV can affect humans in
any way if a positive cat bites? I would think not but don't know for sure.
Thanks for the info an the cleaner too although it is a standing joke with my
friends that the name of the product is NOT Simple Green, it is Intelligent
Green.Green being my last name and all.

Amen to that Lee! I think Ozzy will calm down and really appreciate being
rescued, Kathryn. Somehow they just know it. He will like having his food
served to him on a plate instead of having to scrounge for it. You did a very
wonderful thing Kat.

You might want to spray something around Ozzy's door to neutralize the scent of
an intact cat or your other male cats might begin trying to scent things their
way and you will be mopping up a whole lot of cat pee.  There are sprays with
pheromones, odor neutralizing sprays and even a catnip spray with natural
catnip oil.  That may be something to get the cats excited about Ozzy in a
positive way.

So far they are both doing well.

Plan on keeping Ozzy locked up for a few weeks after his neuter.  It takes at
least 2 or 3 weeks for that boy smell to go away.  (And it just seems to
permeate the house.  You may want to cage Ozzy as far away from the living
quarters as possible.)

Thanks all.

Surprisingly, Oz appears to have sprayed once and nothing since. When
I brought him home from the vet his poor mouth hurt and all he did was
drink water and sleep. Now he is up and about, tried leaving the
bathroom once, and while the other cats hissed at him and the dog
tried to chase him, nobody sprayed or fought. Miss Kitty hisses at
everybody so they hiss back. It will take a while.

I did get some felaway today to keep on hand.

Re: [Felvtalk] Ozzy and Miss Kitty

2012-11-05 Thread Lee Evans
If the dog doesn't try to make Oz into a snack, the two will eventually get
used to each other and set ground rules.  As for Oz and spraying, it's
sometimes the neighborhood fighters that give up the whole thing as a bad idea
once they find themselves neutered and cared for by a loving human and never
spray again. Like I said in another post on this topic, the horrid odor that
accompanies an intact male cat totally disappears once they are neutered and
all that you are left with is a spritz of pee that can be washed off with lemon
detergent or something else pleasant.  Most of my enthusiastic sprayers gave it
up after they realized that they were living with a family of rescued cats, no
one was their enemy any more and they didn't have to set territorial
boundaries.  Now they stick to having a hissy fit occasionally, maybe a face
slapping contest but I haven't had a real battle or full wall spray job in over
two years.  My problem here is that lots
of the cats "think" outside of the box.  This is an issue that calls for a
plastic paint scraper to pick up the offering and a bucket lined with a plastic
bag to drop it in.  After everything is cleaned up, it's mop and pail time and
the house is back to normal until the next day.  Sigh.  For this I needed a
college degree.

Lee,

I don't think Oz is going to end up being a sprayer but we will have
to wait and see how he handles it once he come out of solitude and,
hopefully, begins interacting with the other cats. I suspect he may
end up being a loner but that remains to be seen.

As for clean up with mop and pail, my problem is the carpeting in the
bedrooms. I have laminate flooring in the kitchen/lr/dr but carpet in
the bedroom which is, of course where he sprayed his smelly tomcat
marker. Right on the doorframe between the master bath and bedroom. I
found that a mixture of about 50/50 white vinegar and water seems to
neutralize the odor so it isn't tempting for the other cats.

As for Polar Bear, he doesn't see cats as snacks, he sees them as
another version of a squeaky play toy that self motivates - FAST - and
he loves it. The other cats are, for the most part, used to it but Oz
showed no sense of humor and no desire to play the first time around.
Again, time will tell.

While we are on this subject, my Harley is my problem. He was born on his

out for 2 or 3 hours during the day. He and the others go down on the ground
to do their thing and then most come back on the deck to lounge in the
sunshine. My problem is that in the last month or so Harley insists on being
outside all day, 24/7. He is acting more like a feral and when I refuse to let
him out he waits until I am looking and then sprays, usually within 3 or 4 feet
of me. I can see it on his face, "I said I want out! Let me out or I will
spray everything in site, not to mention pace the floor, deliberatly knock
theings down." I have never seen this problem on "My Cat From Hell". Usually
bad behavior comes from trauma in their past. He has alsways had a loving home
with people. Where does this come from? He is also super active, like a
Savannah, jumps so high he hts his head on the ceiling when chasing a moth or
fly.

Can you enclose with wire mesh a back porch or have someone construct an
outside cat escape-safe enclosure?  Sounds like Harley needs a little change of
scenery. I have an enclosure here for some problem cats as well as the overflow
from my cat room.  They are perfectly happy to watch birds, deer, coons and
other critters from the enclosure because they feel that they are outside.

-i THINK i WILL HAVE TO DO THAT! Had 20 acres logged this year and think I am
going to have to spedn all my earnings on Harley. Right now, he is coming in
and jumping on the desk, then off, then on, than off. He either wants out,
attention or food. Can't go out because it is 42, raining and windy. Don't
want a big vet bill and have to give him meds. He is not a good patient!
Maybe I will take a nap. Especially if I turn on the electric blanket. Then
he will quiet down. It is only when I am up and home that he does this. When
I am gone, nothing happens. It cannot be that he wants to be held and loved,
he only tolerates that mushy stuff for a minute or two, then wants down.

Re: [Felvtalk] Ozzy and Miss Kitty

2012-11-05 Thread Lee Evans
It IS about Harley.  Since he wants to be outside, he could be if he had a nice
escape proof enclosure so the wood creatures, both nasty and nice can't get to
him nor he to them and he and some of his house mates can still enjoy the
"great outdoors" without jeopardizing their lives or your sanity. Harley sounds
like my Romeo who managed in one year, at my former home to vanish completely
for two weeks, return, vanish again and return with a broken front leg.  That
was it for me.  At the new place, which is in the middle of woods somewhere in
Texas he now has an enclosure with access to a large shed, complete with
donated air conditioner (it's hot here about 9 months of the year) and his 8
companion problem and non-problem cats.  Romeo was always an inside cat, always
a spritzer and always a problem because he used to like to pick fights with
everyone, even girl cats.  Now he's a mellow fellow and stops to smell the
roses (actually weeds, no roses
available).  I'm forwarding some pictures my friend took of my cat sanctuary.
It cost me about $700 but it's very large, originally housed 14 cats.  Three
passed away and 2 went back up the hill (steep driveway) to my cat room.

Spay and Neuter your cats and dogs and your weird relatives and nasty neighbors
too!

Miss Kitty has gone to Rainbow Bridge

2006-06-24 Thread Tim Lyons

Hi
folks,

I have only been
lurking on the list for the past year or so.  Some of you may remember
me.  I lost Cher, Midnight, Lisa and Suzy to the leukemia in a 6 month
period in 2004.  Today, we came home to find their mother, Miss Kitty
dead.  She had been having some kidney issues related to the leukemia, but
was responding to the medications.  Just last night, she had caught a small
lizard.  She was OK this morning.  She ate her breakfast, she's been
scratching on her scratching pad and acting  only a little less than she
would normally.

This whole ride with
her and the kittens has been tough.  It's our first experience with FeLV
and it's been HELL!  I still wouldn't have put her & the kittens to
sleep when we rescued them in July 2003.  I just couldn't do it.
Our vet recommended the same fate for Miss Kitty when we took her there about a
month ago when her kidney issues flaired.

We gave her 3 years
of life that she would not have had otherwise and I don't regret any of
it.  She was a sweet, precious soul who didn't deserve the fate God handed
her.

May she rest softly
with her babies at Rainbow Bridge.  Please add her to the Candlelight
Service for Monday.

Thanks for being
there when I needed you all.

Thanks for your caring about Miss Kitty

2006-06-25 Thread Tim Lyons

I just wanted to let
you all know how much it means to have such a caring group to share this FeLV
experience with.  We've had cats for over 20 years and, to be quite honest,
I never paid much attention when the vets always suggested vaccinating for FeLV
because I had never had ANY experience with it.  Well...I feel like an
expert now after the last 3 years with Miss Kitty and her family.  As I
said in my previous e-mail, it has been HELL both emotionally and financially,
but we just couldn't back away from the situation in summer 2003.  How do
you kill a mother & 7 kittens??  You can't.

Anyway, I am now
pretty addicted to lurking on this talk list and will continue to monitor what's
going on.  I really appreciate all the information I've gleaned from each
of you and pray that someday there will be a cure for this awful disease.
Thanks to you all for being there to listen and care.  If I can ever help
in any way including transport through central North Carolina or south
central Virginia, please contact me via this list.

Thanks from the
bottom of my heart!

Hi Brenda! It's wonderful to hear from you despite the sad
circumstances... :(

I'm sure Miss Kitty is receiving a fine homecoming from her babies!
That is my only consolation when Sleepypants must leave us...that he
will be reunited with his mom and brothers and the family will be whole
again!

Please take care and let us know if you need anything at all!

Dear Brenda
I'm so, so sorry for what you've been through these last
couple of years--many of us here can sadly relate only too well--and I'm
thinking of you tonight and crying with you as you grieve for your precious Miss
Kitty. As others have said, I'm just so glad Miss Kitty and her kittens knew
what it was to be dearly loved right to the end. Thanks for caring for these
sweet souls, Kerry

  Hi
  folks,

  I have only been
lurking on the list for the past year or so.  Some of you may remember
me.  I lost Cher, Midnight, Lisa and Suzy to the leukemia in a 6 month
period in 2004.  Today, we came home to find their mother, Miss Kitty
dead.  She had been having some kidney issues related to the leukemia,
but was responding to the medications.  Just last night, she had caught a
small lizard.  She was OK this morning.  She ate her breakfast,
she's been scratching on her scratching pad and acting  only a little
  less than she would normally.

  This whole ride
with her and the kittens has been tough.  It's our first experience with
FeLV and it's been HELL!  I still wouldn't have put her & the kittens
to sleep when we rescued them in July 2003.  I just couldn't do
it.  Our vet recommended the same fate for Miss Kitty when we took her

years of life that she would not have had otherwise and I don't regret any of

  handed her.

  Thanks for being

Brenda, I read so many of these posts, but reading yours I still could
barely hold back tears. I can't believe what you have gone through. Bless you
for giving them all life. I know it is very little consolation, but it is good
that when she went she went fast, and did not suffer.  I hope that I go so
quickly when I go, that I eat and feel well the morning of my death. I am so, so
sorry though.

I was very sad to read about Miss Kitty's passing. You helped her and
her kids out, when many would not have done the same. I think there
are people who are wont to give in to treating animals like
appliances, and if the cat "doesn't work" then they take it back or
get rid of it. Possibly a side effect of our consumerist society?
Anyway, you put yourself through the emotional and financial hell to
help innocents who needed and deserved that help. Thank you for
caring FOR Miss Kitty.

Brenda,

I'm so sorry to hear about your beloved Miss Kitty.
It was a comfort to me when reading your story that
she felt fine right up until she passed away. What a
blessing. So many kitties suffer for weeks until they
finally pass. I hope that all the wonderful memories
and what you did to make her short life a happy one
will comfort you as you grieve for sweet Miss Kitty.
Bless you for what you did for her and her babies.

:)

Brenda,

My grandma and dad's side of the family live in
Greensboro. I go visit her once a year. Beautiful
country.

And knowing you are totally and unconditionally loved.  Miss Kitty and
her babies left with that total knowledge.
