Jeni, Wow! You are a saint welcoming another FeLV+ baby into your loving home. I hope that he's with you for years to come. I can't help with the kittens, except to wish you good luck in finding them homes quickly. :) Wendy --- JENI RECA <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi, > I just wanted to write and thank everyone for thier > kind words about > Hillman's passing and also wanted to say sorry to > anyone that has lost a > baby in the last few weeks. > > After we lost Hillman a few weeks ago, I wasn't on > the search to find > another feluk, but what do you know I just brought > another one home. Well, I got an email at work today from the shelter saying that someone had already rescued this cat and she had a wonderful 'retirement home'. So good news for this poor cat. I really was excited to see her though as I've never seen a cat that old before! However, my place isn't the best because my guys don't get along that well, so it probably worked out for the best. I hope she does well in a new home and doesn't miss her 'family'. I just can't believe anyone would get rid of a pet they'd had that many years to a shelter of all places. I'm as outraged and disgusted as you are - that is unbelievable behavior. But you go girl! Bring that great old lady to a good home. As far as vaccines I don't think I would, but I would talk it over with my vet. At that age, what could FeLV have a chance to do that age isn't doing already? I would start her in one room so she can get her bearings and have controlled introductions.catatonya <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi all, I may be getting a new addition to the family. Oh yeah I forgot to mention in the last email. I wouldn't vaccinate her because of her age. She has live this long I wouldn't jeopardized her health. She gone through so much for her family to do this. If anything take her to the Vet and get her checked out. Re: "new" addition
Tonya, I just don't understand people! It would make me madder, if it weren't so disheartening. Imagine how those people must treat the humans in their lives. I'm sure glad I don't have to depend on them! My bet is they'll end up with no one to care for them when they need it. I feel sorry for the children in that family. I'm so glad you're opening your heart and home to sweet angel Puss! The suggestions Jenn gave you sound really sound. I'd probably end up sleeping on the bathroom floor with her! I know what you mean about not getting support from family and friends. My mother has been telling me to put Gypsy to sleep for months. She also reminds me often about how my bottle babies would have met the same fate as soon as she found out their status. She usually says this in a calm, reassuring voice, and I know she feels this way because she sees how hard their illnesses are on me, but PLEASE, this sort of "support" does not help. Re: "new" addition
Oh, and no, I wouldn't cage her, I'd give her the bathroom (or another small room with no furniture). That way she can get a better smell of her surroundings, but not get hurt. Make sure you don't have any hairdryer cords hanging down or anything like that, of course. Give her the bathmat or a blanket on the floor, use a HEAVY crock type of bowl for her water (and food), because she will bump them, knock them over. Put the bowls against a wall, but not in a corner, because some blind cats will "camp out" in the corners for security and balance, with their noses crammed into the wall/floor corner (and you don't want her to do this in the water dish). I'd give her at least 4 days to a week in the one room before letting her learn the next room. She's going to have to memorize the room dimensions and where all the corners and furniture is, so that's a lot to do in 4 days, and she needs to feel secure (you'll know when she's ready, if she walks across the bathroom to you when you open the door, like a seeing cat, then she's ready for the next room). If she seems panicked when you open the bathroom door to let her learn the next room, I'd put her back in the bathroom until she begins to seem to want out when you leave the room. Some cats make these adjustments faster than others, let her tell you when she's ready for the next step. If you have one very friendly cat who might "buddy up" with her, I'd introduce them to each other in the bathroom before you let her explore the rest of the house, because if she can bond with one of your seeing cats, he/she may guide her around when you give her more rooms to memorize and explore. That's how I'm thinking too. Even if she 'catches' leukemia, I don't think it would have enough time to cause her any problems worse than what she's facing already at that age. t[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I understand what you mean! I would NOT give her the vaccine, personally. Studies have shown that it's very unlikely for an adult cat to contract FELV, it is usually only caught by kittens under a year of age (or born with it via their mother) or by immunosuppressed cats such as those already carrying FIV. If the cat is otherwise healthy, I would not worry too much about exposure. As long as she has lived, I don't think FELV will kill her any faster than old age anyways, really. That is really amazingly old! I would be more concerned with the immunizations pulling her system down and making her die of old age than anything else, at this point. I'd keep them as minimalistic as possible (like maybe only rabies since it's the law). Chances are, she has long since developed natural immunity (and 20 years of annual immunizations, too, most likely) against just about everything anyways. You could always pull her titers (to confirm immunity against all the cat diseases), if you have a good veterinary lab nearby. I would pull a bit of blood to check her baselines and to make sure she is not anemic, just to be safe. We have a king-sized bed, too, and they usually give me a little strip to sleep on; as long as I don't take up too much room. And forget pillows! LOL...I have to make a comment on this. I agree totally! Boy do I feel like a pretzel when I wake up but in the same token they are my security knowing they are there. Have slept with kitties all my life so it feels awkward when I'm away from home unless I visit my daughter then her cats will sleep with me. Does this make any sense to you guys? Title: Message Tiger has to have meds every night. If I'm not smart enough to catch him unawares and give it to him by, say, 9-ish, he takes off after that time and hides below the bed, because he knows it's THAT sort of time. I've learned now not to try and get him out when he hides--it's a waste of time. I know now that what I have to do is finish all my end of evening chores, go to bed, and put the lights out. Only then--and always then--I hear a plaintive miaow ("So what took you so long?"), his little head emerges, and he jumps on the bed. And then I have to grab him, put the light on, take him to the bathroom etc. Scamp! I guess he figures it's one satisfying way to pay me back. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ChrisSent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 9:25 AMTo: felvtalk@felineleukemia.orgSubject: RE: New addition And don’t you love it when you move around a bit too much & they give you that look!! She is a 15 yr old Spayed female Siamese purebred. She was extremely underweight she is a large boned kitty and has big feet. She could very easily weigh when healthy 14-15 pounds but she is lucky if she weighs 5-6 pounds at the time of arrival. Very nice personality gets along with my others. I have been feeding her alot of different dryfoods because I free feed my kitties. Been giving her extra wetfood as well. She has gain almost a pound since being here. Fur is getting soft. She had diarrhea the first 2 days, now that is gone stools are solid and normal...YAY! Is there something else that I can give her to help boost her system? Like supplements or something? She will be pampered by my husband and I for the rest of her life. Last night she purred for the first time since being here. She is such a sweetie too...By the way she does sleep with us and the other kitties on our bed. THANK GOD it's a King Size bed! I'm open for any suggestions...thanks! Re: OT: New addition
Terrie, That's wonderful about Ling adjusting. Do you think she was so underweight because her human was taken away from her? Thank goodness she's found herself in such a loving home. You could try Nutrical, (it's for underweight kitties to help them gain energy and nutrients). Also, I haven't tried it myself yet, but what about Petinic (sp?). It was suggested by my GP vet as an overall supplement and I've heard others on the list talk about it. B12 does sound like a good idea, but I don't think I'd subject her to injections so soon after the transition, especially since she's beginning to trust you. I don't know if it's worth taking the chance of setting her back and making her suspicious of you. I've given sublingual B12, but have been told it's not effective that way. I'm betting if you offer her yummy stuff whenever you catch her looking at you, she'll soon fatten up. God bless you and your whole tribe!
