So glad he was loved and cared for. So many aren't. Laura, I understand how you feel. Over 4 years I lost 10 FeLV rescues. Mattie, my little blind girl, hit me the hardest. She was the bravest and sweetest little girl. After the last positive died I found a kitten at the dumpster colony I TNR and feed. Angel was negative and got me into kitten rescue. In the end I kept Angel and have fostered several more kittens. I know as long as I am fostering kittens I can not take in any FeLV cats. Re: Thank you so much from Simms' mom - Our special Angels
Oh Anne, it's so hard to say goodbye. I do really believe that these guys are special to Heaven... When my Grace was dying I was in touch with animal communicators. I was so desperate to keep her with me, like you I would have done anything to change the outcome. I miss her so much and think of her often. When she was leaving me, an ac told me that she had work to do on the other side. That she was anxious to be on her way. Hearing that hurt me a little and at the same time made me proud. Proud that my special little Angel was needed not just by me, but by Heaven itself. Do you remember how we used to remark about how our little loves were special? They all seemed a little bit more loving, a little more connected to us than the cat next door cared to be. I used to wonder if it was because we were forewarned that their time with us might be short. That it might be because we paid them more attention then most fur parents, that because of that they responded in same, paying more attention to us. Something along the lines of the nature vs. nurture, (are they born special or does the environment we provide make them so?). Through the years of close association with all of our babies, I no longer have any doubt. They are born that way. Born to make a difference in our lives and all the lives they touch. So special that their work continues on the other side and fight as we might, we have no choice but to surrender to their higher mission. God has a plan for our Angels, I truly believe that. Perhaps part of Simms and my Angel Grace's work is to guide other special needs animals to their new guardian's homes and hearts. How can we know what Heaven has in store for them? All I know is that I feel blessed to have been one of the chosen to learn from them and share their light and love. Simms and Grace are holding a place in Heaven for us Anne, we will see them again. Much love my dear, my tears are with you, Nina anne wrote: Thank you so much, Chris, Kerry, Terrie, Sherry and Nina. Your messages meant so much to me in this sad time. I wrote a few notes to you all below, too. I wish I had had more energy to do this with all of you other very kind cat-loving people who wrote. With love to you all, Anne and Felv+ angels Simms, Jimi Too Cool, Buggs and Nala and the other living sweet guys with me (Sophie, too, who is doing well and can be sassy now!) Chris, I didn't know about your history about Simms and Tamara! I love knowing this. I am so thankful I wrote back to Tamara about Simms. One look at his picture and I was a goner. I liked what you said so much about reserving a corner of our hearts for Simms. It reminds me of a favorite piece of mine: written by Dr Harry Cooper: Every pet owner has a heart like those old Chinese medicine chests. They have two hinged doors and up to 50 drawers inside. each drawer is for a pet. While the pet is alive the drawer remains open. When the pet passes the drawer is closed. But, and this is the important thing, another drawer must be opened! You can go back to the closed drawers any time you like. They are not locked. Open them. Enjoy them. They are full of things no one can take away - wonderful memories. Kerry, I always am so happy to see you are still on the list, although I am not able to get on much anymore. Terrie, I admire your hard work so much and you have been doing it for so long. And taking in seniors, bless you, Terrie. Sherry, I am northeast of Flint in a tiny little farming town called Otisville. We are pretty far apart, eh? Nina, your message touched me so much. I know you guys are there with me as I am with you even if we don't have time to drop a line. That is what I have always loved about this list. I especially loved this line, Nina: :* } Souls so unique and special that Heaven can't seem to be without them.

I agree that poem is beautiful. I have it in my files. When I bury a furbaby I read this to give me some comfort. Butit still hard though. Surprisingly I don't know it by heart. they have taken in felv+ cats also. I can't recall offhand which member here even sent a felv+ there in the few years I've been on this list. Sue Marino, a rescuer/vet tech from Muttshack runs her own pet hospice in NY. She has about 200 sick and dying animals and is now having problems with the town her neighbors. They are trying to get her thrown out for "running a business" when in fact it is a non-profit org trying to give these disabled pets a better life before they die. The following link goes directly to the town's reps that are ruling whether or not to throw her out of her house and off her property, along with the pets. It's Sue Marino at Angel's Gate Hospice. Please take a minute and write to show your concern. Click here: Welcome to the Town of Smithtown MORE INFO ON SUSAN HERE: Some of you know that there is a small group of neighbors surrounding Angel's Gate Animal Hospice in Fort Salonga, NY who are trying to close them down. This is not news, as there have been complaints in the past but to no avail. However, now this group is taking it to the next level by hiring an attorney and trying to pursue legal action. Angel's Gate has always maintained an open door policy and has been inspected, interviewed, observed, and/or been paid surprise visits by the Department of Health, Department of Public Safety, Buildings Department, Animal Control, The ASPCA, and the Smithtown Town Attorney and have been found in no violation of any wrong doing. In fact, founder Susan Marino won the ASPCA Founders Award in 2003 for her work with animals. Since all else has failed, this small faction of the neighborhood is now trying to claim that Angel's Gate is running as a "business" when in fact it is a nonprofit providing the only services of it's kind on Long Island. Among those supporting the hospice is the remaining majority of Angel's Gate neighbors. Now Sue, Victor and their incredible staff caring for the sick, injured, homeless, and terminally ill animals need our help. Here's how. THIS TUESDAY, April 18, at 2pm. Susan took my Felix in when I was ill, going thru financial devastation He was negative, but a senior boy I had rescued with his brother. Oscar, when they were 10. Felix was in CRF, with IBD, his body was giving out, but he had a strong spirit to live. It was one of the toughest decisions I had to make, I have never had to part with one of my furkids, and this was so hard. I had met Susan years before at a Puppy Mill Rally, and I visited Angel's Gate. It is a beautiful, wonderful place. You would never know it was a hospice, and all the residents are indeed given the best care available. I am so glad that Felix was able to live out his remaining months in such a fine place, surrounded by such caring people. The sanctuary here has gone thru similar times. It is awful how people can be. I'm off now to write, and do whatever I can to show my support for Susan, Victor, and all the fortunate creatures that can live out their lives at Angel's Gate. Patti
angels
Hello All, I'm just now catching up with all the posts. It's been busy around here. my prayers (and tears) are with allthose left behind as each little angel has moved on. please know what a source of hope and strength you are to me, my family and others whoare just learning about FeLV. Everyone in the house except the kitties has been sick with flue and i am getting over a light bought of pneumonia. nothing serious, mainly dealing w the frustration of getting tired so easily. I think we finally have things worked out with the Humane society here and surprisingly it was their vet who helped us. we're all going w the idea that the 8 have been mine all along since I've paid for food, vet bills ect through-out. the kitties were all spayed and neutered Wednesday, pogo is the only one with any problems. a slight fever, nausea and not keeping food downfor the last 3 days. she's on antibiotics and an anti nausea med and is starting to perk up. now ...if they'd just stop picking at their own stitches ! :) i've never been one to get wrapped up with "causes" and find it strange to be wishing i could do something tohelp more of these special critters.lol that in itselfproves they are little angels among us ! thank you all! Re: angels
Hi Karen, Hooray that there doesn't seem to be a problem with you keeping the kitties! If you're anything like me, they'd have to pry them out of your cold clammy hands to get them anyway! It's wonderful that they've all come through their surgeries okay. I'm glad that Pogo has started to feel better, (and the humans in the household too!). Bless you and your family a thousand times over for taking on this crew of sweethearts. It's a lot for one plate, but I can assure you from personal experience that the joys are worth whatever heartache may be in store. Give those angels a head butt from me! My Calico Kitty Angels
Hi, Everyone-- Pam Jackson of Carocats in Columbia, SC, has been kind enough to tell you all about the feral colony of cats and kittens(some positive, some negative for felv) that I have been caring for and trying to find homes for. At the moment we are slowly testing and spaying them all. I say slowly because my heat pump (air conditioner/heating unit)in my house is rusting out and needs to be replaced. They are putting a new one in on Tuesday and Wednesday, which includes ripping out all the old ductwork under the house, to the tune of $6100.00. So my feral cat funds are limited. We are trying to find homes for the positive and negative ones, and if you know anyone looking for a very sweet, pretty new cat or kitten send them this link www.bemikitties.com/carocats/pg7.html Pam also mentioned my new book, THE YEAR OF THE CAT: NEW POEMS ($12.95), which just came out this fall. It is my 30th book(I am a poet by profession) and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. It has also been chosen to appear in the New Media section of the January issue of Cat Fancy magazine. The second section of the book tells the story in poems of how I came to care for these sweet feral cats. You can find more info on itat www.kittyfeatherpress.blogspot.com, www.apbooks.net, and www.amazon.com. A percentage of the sales of all my books go to animal rescue shelters and homeless shelters. If you live in South Carolina I have two book signings coming up. One at Waldenbooks at Dutch Square Mall in Columbia, SC, from 2:00-5:00 on November 26. And another at Waldenbooks at Columbiana Mall in Columbia, SC, from 1:00 - 4:00 on December 3. Both are on Saturdays. I mention all of this because I want to tell you the story of the two calico twin kittens that Pam also mentioned a few days ago. We didn't test the kitties originally for felv because they are all so fat and happy and energetic, no runny eyes or noses, and eat like hogs. A very nice lady called Pam and wanted a calico kitten to be an outdoor cat with her two other mature cats at her home which sits on 7 acres. Pam didn't have one that could be an outdoor cat at the time, but both of the calico kittens I had were tree climbers and live in the woods behind my house, so we thought it would be a good match. I had raised these kittens on my porch since they were 5 weeks old when their mother first brought them to see me, so they were tame. Now they were 3 and a half months old and gorgeous. The lady decided to take both when she heard they were twins, and I thought all went well until I got a message two days later on my answering machine from her sadly telling me the kittens were dead. She had taken them to her vet, and they had both tested positive for felv, and he suggested to her that they should be put down immediately. I was devastated because if I had been called first I would have taken them back in a second. The next day was the first signing for my book at Books on Main in Newberry, SC. I had cried all day after I received that message, and it was all I could do to get it together to do the book signing the next day. But I kept thinking of my precious calico kittens as my kitty angels that had come back to me and would be with me at the book signing and forever. And I believe they were. From the fist moment I heard they were gone I began to write a poem calledWEDNESDAY about them as a memorial so they wouldn't be forgotten. I sent a copy of it to Pam when I finished, and she mentioned it in one of her emails about my feral colony. When I take some of these cats in to get them ready for adoption I keep them in the bathroom next to the kitchen. There I give them baths and flea treatments and train them to use the litter box, etc. What was particularly hard for me was the fact I had spent the day before in that bathroom doing all this with the calico twins and telling them how lucky they were to be going to such a wonderful new home. I had no idea I was sending them to their death. Here is the poem I wrote (I named the tinykitten Rosebud and the chubby one Azalea). I am includingthis poemfor those of you who have gone though a similar experience or who have lost a precious fur child recently. I hope it makes you feel better. Much love to you all, Laura WEDNESDAY (c) Laura Stamps Almost four months old, ruddy as rosebuds or azaleas, they scuffled on the porch every evening, the tiniest one turning to slap her paws against the glass door, as if she were swimming. Twins, they huddled together in the corner of the bathroom that afternoon, a puddle of calico, their eyes content to converse in the silent consonants and vowels of cats. The heavy one only howled when the other, sweet as the scent of a spring blossom, stood in my lap, her paws on my chest, eager to kiss my chin, as if she knew they would surely return to me on Friday, ribboned with velveteen wings.

The more I read of this little ones dying for no good reason, the more grateful I am for my own vets. I know Dixie Louise would have been executed for no good reason by a lot of people. - Original Message - From: Laura Stamps To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Saturday, October 29, 2005 11:13 AM Subject: My Calico Kitty Angels Hi, Everyone-- Pam Jackson of Carocats in Columbia, SC, has been kind enough to tell you all about the feral colony of cats and kittens(some positive, some negative for felv) that I have been caring for and trying to find homes for. Re: My Calico Kitty Angels
I have said this before and I will say it again... Do NOT leave untested kitties at a vet without his understanding what your wishes are if they test posAnd the same for any going to a new home...PTS for a pos test is almost automatic in many places... By the number of time that I have read of this happening on this list it would seem that many of us don't realize how often it is done to so many cats that most likely have at least 2 years left of quality life Tad maimaipg wrote: The more I read of this little ones dying for no good reason, the more grateful I am for my own vets. Re: Angels Wings, et al: ACTIVISM NEEDED
Well, it's not possible to file complaints about rescues that are 1000's of miles away, when you can't go check them out yourself first hand. I had my doubts about Angel Wings when I first heard of it, but being 2000 miles away, it just was not my place to call any of their local authorities and question them, because I had no proof that there was anything wrong, just a little concern that a couple of cats in their online pics were a tad thin (and it being a rescue, that would not be uncommon for new arrivals). While being active in stopping these things is important, you can't just go around calling the authorities on every unproven suspicion, because if they respond to out of state complaints at all, it would be surprising, and then, if they do, and they find nothing wrong, after a while, they stop responding completely, because we, as an animal rescue community, will be seen as zealots, and then we would be ignored as "nut jobs" who call for every little thing, and waste these agencies time and effort. IF you see it first-hand, by all means call the authorities, but I don't think it's fair of you to judge humanity as a whole by the comments of an online community, because of the spread out nature of an online community's members. I don't think any of us on this list were local to Angel Wings, so there's really nothing any of us could have done. As far as the closed door policy goes, I agree whole-heartedly, if you can't visit it first, I would NEVER take an animal there, period! My doors are always open to anyone who wants to see what I am doing (not that I'm a rescue, but I do occasionally do a private rescue on my own, and involve other rescues down the line if I need help with adoptions). I DO get people dropping off cats at my door, and to me, it's NOT a nuisance, it's a blessing, because if they did not bring them here, they might otherwise dump them out in the woods somewhere to die. I do have a small colony of strays (not really feral, just not all friendly) that I feed. If one of them ever seems injured, I will get it vet care. If I ever see one that is obviously unneutered, I will get him neutered. There is a newly arrived orange male I have been petting recently that is in need of a neuter, and as soon as I get Bones through her ordeal and am sure I have the funds, I will catch him and get him neutered. Most of the time, people come to me and ask for my help, such as with Bones. They know I do rescue (or at least that I'm the crazy cat lady) and they come to me for help. My doors are always open to help a cat, and to the people who come to me for help. A closed door policy is more than a red flag to me, it's a great big whopping NO NO NO! If I ever hear of a questionable rescue in my area, you can be sure I will check it out, even if I have to go trespassing in middle of the night with a pair of binoculars.
