Andrew, Please read every post of a thread. We're defending grosso modo the same opinion. Then I wrote 09 aug 2008 09:18:46 GMT+02:00: in Do is italian style, opposed to in Ut which should be of french usage. while on 10 aug 08, at 23:28, you wrote: Trompette en ut (lower case, please!) is not at all archaic (see, among others, Messiaen: _Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum_). In fact, I'm not at all sure that trompette en do is even permissible. Tr. *in* do, which has been cited in this thread, is not French at all but Italian. Andrew Stiller Furthermore I'm looking in my library at several scores by Ricordi, Leduc, Legrand who all use upper case (!) en Ut (French) and in Do (Italian). But as I stated too: in many contemporary scores, there's no uniformity more as tromba in C, trompette en Ut, trumpet in Do (!) is found in various combinations. And this statement I'm making is apart from any linguistic correctness: I only tell what I see in our not so uniform Europ. RE: [Finale] VST instruments in Fin09
The latency/audio/midi problems (with fin2007) are thus: The user selects speedy entry and clicks on a staff. On playing a few notes on MIDI-keyboard, there is a marked delay before the sound is played. This occurs both with the built in smart synth and with GPO. Then if the user clicks around other staves a few times, the latency disappears for a while. It tends to come and og upredicatably. This problem occurs on all machines that I have tried, and that is quite a few and includes loads of stationary PC's and laptops of different makes and configurations, both with various external sound cards and internal sound cards. I don't think this can be accounted to a systemdependent configuration. This problem never occurs with other midi/audio software on the same machine, like Cubase etc. The other thing that often happens is that the sound just disappears, wether it be the Smart Synth or GPO. Sometimes it helps to reload the MIDI-driver, sometimes Finale must be rebooted and sometimes the whole PC must be rebooted. Again this is a problem spesific to Fin2007, not other midi/audio software on the same machine. Since upgrading to Fin2009 will be a big investment for my music department, I would like to be assured that these problems have been solved before we part with any more money. That's why I asked. It was not my wish to start a long discussion on the definition of the word 'latency'. -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] På vegne av dhbailey Sendt: 11. august 2008 11:31 Til: finale@shsu.edu Emne: Re: [Finale] VST instruments in Fin09 Jari Williamsson wrote: [snip 4. Re: [Finale] VST instruments in Fin09
Midi has no latency. Latency issues occur when a computer doesn't have enough CPU power or a fast enough data bus or enough RAM and the samples are too large for the system to handle easily. Well, actually MIDI itself does have latency. It's a serial communication language, so if I play a chord, the notes are not sent at the same time, but one after the other. If I have a lot of chords on different midi channels the latency will build up, also, midi prioritises the different channels in a specific order; first 1 then 2, etc etc. (which is really weird why the GM standard uses channel 10 as the drum/perc channel). Combine the latency within midi (and i grant you that at a first glance it's not so much; approx 0.8 ms) with the hardware converting the midi signals, hardware buffers, keyboards with slow electronics, etc ; after a while the latency does build up. That's why the ability to shift tracks in ms backwards and forwards midi-wise, is so important in sequencers of today and yesterday, which is the reason for me exporting my Finale finished composition to a sequencer to create the orchestral mock-up with my different external libraries. / Cb ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
Re: [Finale] Re: Garritan licensing fees
From my experience, the number who would use the sounds without upgrading is darned near zero. If the sounds could be mixed with other synthesizer voices, then definitely it would be used a lot, but the bundled Garritan sounds are just too restricted to be a good solution for just about project. I have no idea what the contract arrangements are, but typically the money would flow the OTHER direction. This is like AOL getting Microsoft to put their sign-up icon on the standard Windows desktop. I'd think Garritan would be paying Finale to promote their product. I surely hope none of my payment to Finale went to Garritan. dhbailey wrote: Craig Parmerlee wrote: I wonder if Garritan receives ANY licensing fees for being included in the distribution. The vast majority of Finale users don't buy a full Garritan product. In fact, I would guess that the vast majority of Finale users don't use any Garritan sounds, and stick with the SoftSynth sounds exclusively. Finale is much more generous with its selection of Garritan sounds than Sibelius, incidentally. If the sounds could be mixed with other synthesizer voices, then definitely it would be used a lot, Garrtian instruments can be combined with the SoftSynth sounds, and (in Fin2009) with any other AU/VST sounds. but the bundled Garritan sounds are just too restricted to be a good solution for just about project. Come now. String quartet? Brass quintet? Chamber orchestra? Piano trio? Classic trumpet-tenor jazz quintet? Users who need a full orchestra or bigband or concert band will obviously upgrade to a full soundset, but there are plenty of people whose needs are met by the included instruments. I'd suggest looking for something that is high definition. Dell Monitors are generally rated really high. Apple's monitors are nice too. Something with DVI on it. You don't want VGA as you'll lose resolution. There is a big difference. Also, you might want at least 24. The prices are good on them. I pivot my wide-screen Dell quite often - whenever I am working on a full orch score, or even a mid-sized combo. It is also great for perusing full scores on line (such as at the IMSLP library). It only takes a few seconds to do. I only wish the screen background pic would change automatically. I have some vertical and horizontal Renoirs sized for each, but sometimes I don't take the time to change it. Right now A Girl With a Watercan is all squished and chubby. RE: [Finale] Pivot monitor recommendations?
I have a Syncmaster 204 that I like a lot. I got mine for about $300 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Williams, Jim Sent: Monday, August 11, 2008 6:38 PM To: finale@shsu.edu Subject: [Finale] Pivot monitor recommendations? Friends... One non-crappy outcome of the flood at my house is that I get to upgrade some of the equipment that got washed away. I want to replace one CRT I had with a 21-22 or bigger LCD monitor with pivot capability so I can see a full orchestra or band page--in portrait orientation--at a decent size and use my existing monitor to view K2 or other stuff. What should I look for? Avoid at all cost? My only criteria are 21-22 or bigger and pivot capability. I don't need other fancy addons. Thanx in advance for any advice.
