[Finale] Windows Enterprise setup of Finale 25

2016-09-25 Thread Howey, Henry
The problem's solution lay in the way a server-based system works. And Finale
seems to need special attention in this case. The problem was that ROAMING
APPDATA is on an external drive and is reloaded to the user's account on each
re-boot.

The solution was to change the settings on the server and re-start. The changes
will only become permanent in this matter. I must thank a help source at MM for
the text settings.

Scan it using an earlier version of Finale, save as MusicXML, import
that into Finale v25.

[Finale] Scanning, what to do now?

2016-09-25 Thread Craig Sylvern
First, please forgive me if this topic has had an exhaustive discussion. I
haven’t had the opportunity to read the postings for a little while. With that
being said. . . I do a lot of transcribing of solos and ensemble pieces for my
saxophone students. If the original is printed I’ll scan it and import into
Finale. Most of the time that yields pretty workable results. With the
introduction of Finale v25 they’ve removed scanning. What options do I have
now beside entering in everything with Simple or Speedy entry?

Thanks for the advice.

Re: [Finale] yKey (iKey) "Move To" shortcuts no longer work in 10.11

2016-09-25 Thread Chuck Israels
Hi Darcy et al,

Just updated SmartScroll (Mac), and it is working well. I think I abandoned it
thinking that the horizontal scroll wheel would replace it, but the keyboard is
far better for controlling small scrolling increments.

I was mistaken about which keys SmartScroll uses to scroll horizontally. It
uses Command/Option to scroll to the right, and Command/Control to scroll left.
 Pretty intuitive and easy. I recommend it.

And, by the way, when I did have trouble in the past, the developer was always
quick to respond with help.

Hi Darcy,

Yes, used to have occasional trouble, but it also worked a lot of the time.
Haven’t used it lately, so I don’t know if it’s been updated.

I have a thumb wheel on my Logitech mouse that I use for horizontal scrolling,
but it is hard to control, so I will check on Smartscroll again. It had’t
occurred to me to use mouse clicks in Keyboard Maestro (the app I now use for
macros).

Hi Chuck,

Thanks. I seem to recall you having serious issues with SmartScroll in the
past, no?

Also, can any current yKey users confirm?

How do Mac users who use a trackpad as their primary input device deal with
this issue? Scrolling with the trackpad in Page View has been horribly broken
in Finale for a while now, but there is no keyboard shortcut to advance or
retreat in Scroll View by one measure.

For me, Finale playback goes silent every time I export audio (and the
exported audio is fine), requiring a Finale restart. It might go back to a
problem someone else was having -- that Finale's playback engine defaults to a
specific setting different from my system default. Since other audio programs
work fine while Finale is running, it seems to point to Finale as the culprit.

Mac finale 2014;.5

Yesterday all the scores I was working on were playing back both in
the playback window and with the shift click method. Tonight NONE of
them are playing back. I have no idea where to even star. The sound
is up on the computer and I'm hearing everything else. Have I hit a
wrong button somewhere? I'm just playing back the instruments that
exist in Finale-- I use playback to check my work, not to make
recordings... I just want to hear what I've entered and play back
sections to check them.

Help!

I have a 10-year old score for 3 solo voices, 4 "ripieno" voices, 2
violins and basso continuo, with parts for the violins and the basso
continuo. I've been asked for a separate part with only the 4 ripieno
voices. So I created it as a linked part, but the group bracket I have
in the score doesn't appear in the part. How could I get it back?

I tried unoptimizing the part, but, for some reason, this gives me
barlines "through staves" in the part that I don't have in the score and
don't want. I found no way to correct this.)

Many thanks.

Not an answer for you, but there's something up with playback in this
version.
I'm having a playback problem on 2014.5 Windows, too. It works fine until I
export an audio file. Then, to get sound again, I have to restart Finale.

Just recreate the group in the part. In the Staff Tool, select all, go to
Edit Groups and select Create Group. The options you want are there to be
checked or unchecked.

The reason this happened was because the staves have names. Finale will
preserve groups only for unnamed staves in the parts, like the two staves
of a piano part. If you name them, like SATB or your ripieno staves, Finale
assumes that they aren?t meant to have brackets. One trick that occurs to
me (but I?ve never tried) is deleting the staff names, creating the part,
then naming the staves again once the part has been ?tricked? into
preserving the groups. But it?s so easy to recreate a group compared to
typing in all those staff names that I?ve never tried it.

I hope this was true in 2008. I don?t have a computer that will run this
version any more.

We are pleased to now invite submissions for an upcoming issue of
eContact! on the topic of "Notation of Sonic Art and Digital Audio
Practices," with a special interest in critical evaluations and the
problematics of standardization of graphic representation.

More info on the Call page: http://econtact.ca/call.html
and see the Facebook Event: http://facebook.com/events/301216910238364

We are particularly interested to welcome contributions that
correspond to or are related to the following list of suggested
topics, but also invite potential contributors to propose their own
topics and ideas!

- Evaluation of alternate approaches to notation (such as graphic,
conceptual, experimental and spectromorphological);
- Animated Notation and dynamic / real-time scores;
- The resiliency and flexibility of conventional / traditional notation;
- Symbol-based vs. graphic-based notation;
- Role: performance score, listening score, etc.;
- How much of the result needs to be notated;
- What to leave to the performer / performance praxis;
- Standardization and non-standardization of notational symbols and
graphic representation;
- Existing nomenclature and proposals for notational reform;
- Discrepancies between notation and intent: transmission and
"translation" of abstract ideas to symbolic notation to concrete
realization;
- Prescriptive vs. descriptive: notation as symbol, tool, instrument,
analysis, documentation...;
- Comparisons of software used for the notation of EA;
- Live coding, generative approaches and stored data as notation.

[Finale] yKey (iKey) "Move To" shortcuts no longer work in 10.11

2016-09-25 Thread Darcy James Argue
Hi all,

I know Apple just released macOS 10.12 but I just recently upgraded to OS X
10.11.6 and am still trying to work out all the kinks.

One major kink is that yKey (formerly iKey) shortcuts that involve simulating
mouse movements (“Move To”) no longer seem to work.

I’m not sure if any yKey users have found a solution to this?

The only Finale command I need a simulated mouse click for is to
advance/retreat one measure in Scroll View — but I REALLY need a keyboard
shortcut for that, as trying to accurately scroll right or left using a Magic
Trackpad is still basically impossible, even in Finale v25.

Since Finale does not have a menu command or a built-in shortcut key for
advance/retreat one measure, the only way to get a shortcut for this is to
simulate a mouse click on the measure forward/back buttons. But OS X 10.11
seems to have rendered that part of yKey non-functional… unless I’m missing
something?

Cheers,

– DJA
