[Fink-users] Gnucash startup and gnucash2-docs

2009-11-09 Thread Andrew Hartung

I have this in the X11 menu to start gnucash: .sw/bin/init.sh ; gnucash

Occasionally this works fine, however most of the time I get two
dialog boxes from gnucash stating:

First:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information
for gnucash. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

This box has details and ok buttons, neither which respond.

Under that box is:

Cannot find default values
The configuration data used to specify default values for gnucash
cannot be found in the default system locations. Without this data
gnucash will still operate properly but it may require some extra time
to setup. Do you wish to setup the configuration data?

Options are quit, skip, or setup.

When I get the dialogs as stated above, I hit quit and start from the
terminal. I get the first two lines at start up and the rest after
quitting gnucash:

gnc.bin-Message: main: binreloc relocation support was disabled at
configure time.

gwenhywfar-INFO: plugin.c:  584: Plugin type configmgr unregistered
gwenhywfar-INFO: plugin.c:  584: Plugin type dbio unregistered

I had this problem or one very similar after I installed 10.6 and did
a complete reinstall(deleted /sw, installed 64 bit) of fink, and the
list told me to change the command for the application menu of X11 as
above and it worked fine for a while. I don't know when I started
having problems again, whether it was after a gnucash upgrade or
upgrading to 10.6.1.

The program runs fine when started this way, but the inconsistent
behavior is odd.

A separate item is when I try to install gnucash2-docs I get:

Can't resolve dependency firefox2-shlibs (= 2.0.0.20-4) for package
yelp-viewer-firefox-2.26.0-2 (no matching

packages/versions found)
Exiting with failure.

firefox2-shlibs isn't listed as a package when I do fink list firefox.

Package manager version: 0.29.10
Distribution version: selfupdate-rsync Mon Nov  9 08:02:16 2009, 10.6,
x86_64

Is this just something I need to wait for because of all of the issues
and work with the 10.6 and d64 bit transition? (BTW thanks to all for
the hard work you've done!)

Thank You,
Andrew Hartung

 Not

 ?

 If you're not actually reading /sw/bin/init.sh, which the syntax
 you've
 pasted up would indicated, then that would probably explain your
 issue,
 since it sounds like it works fine from Terminal.app.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying here. Should it read:

.[space]/sw/bin/ini.

or./sw/bin/.

 The 10.6/unstable tree is still in flux, and not all of the
 dependencies
 have been worked out yet.

That's what I figured, but thought I'd check just in case.

I tried both of those and still have the same problem.

source /sw/bin/init.sh ; gnucash  right?

Restarted both X and the system to be sure, but no go.

 Try starting the program with 'gnucash --nofile'
 If gnucash is trying to display an alert, the modal splash screen is
 blocking the alert's appearance. Usually the alert is either that
 there

 have
 never run gnucash, and the program is trying to present the file

 One other thing to try would be to start gnucash from a new terminal

 this
 behavior, and if I recall correctly they were linked to dbus not
 getting

I've been having this problem with gnucash also, but I've always been
starting it from the terminal since I went to 10.6 as it wouldn't
start any other way. Runs fine then. I get the following when I start
it and a few messages when I quit the program. Anything I really need
to worry/do about? I'm running the same fink setup as the original

But there are many more. If this list is just the ones that used the /
usr version will rebuilding all of the packages listed cause them to
use the correct /sw version?

Or as a more drastic but simpler measure, will deleting the /sw
directory and reinstalling fink from scratch do it? I just had to do
that with the move to the new computer a few months ago, and still
haven't installed everything back to what I was used to, so it
wouldn't be that huge of an issue. As it seems that I may have to do
something like that anyway to go 64bit (I wasn't quite sure from the
fink homepage if it meant that or not), maybe I should just wait.
Really, the only thing I can't exist without for a few months is
gnucash2 (I'm in a slow spell like a lot of people) so if/when that is
64 bit I can do it now/then.

If you just have a few that you want to look up, there is the
package database:

Look for a version number in the 10.6/x86_64 row.

I might be missing something, but where is the x86-64 row? For

[Fink-users] issues with libiconv.la 10.6

I'm getting multiple build failures from packages such as pycairo-

The common point being the libiconv.la reference.

I'm running 10.6.1 on a Mac pro.

I followed the instructions to upgrade to 10.6 on the main page, but
before I did it in the way it listed(and had even seen the
instructions), I had run a self-update which seem to do a big upgrade.
When I then did the upgrade as suggested the process seemed to do
nothing new. I don' t know if this matters or not.

Package manager version: 0.29.9
Distribution version: selfupdate-rsync Fri Sep 11 22:23:26 2009, 10.6,
i386

Also, when I run a self-update, all of the trees say:

rsync -rtz --delete-after --delete -q   --include='10.4/' --
include='10.4/stable/' --include='10.4/stable/main/' --include='10.4/
stable/main/finkinfo/' --include='10.4/stable/main/finkinfo/*/' --
include='10.4/stable/main/finkinfo/*' --include='10.4/stable/main/
finkinfo/**/*' --include='10.4/' --include='10.4/stable/' --
include='10.4/stable/crypto/' --include='10.4/stable/crypto/finkinfo/'
--include='10.4/stable/crypto/finkinfo/*/' --include='10.4/stable/
crypto/finkinfo/*' --include='10.4/stable/crypto/finkinfo/**/*' --
include='10.4/' --include='10.4/unstable/' --include='10.4/unstable/
main/' --include='10.4/unstable/main/finkinfo/' --include='10.4/
unstable/main/finkinfo/*/' --include='10.4/unstable/main/finkinfo/*' --
include='10.4/unstable/main/finkinfo/**/*' --include='10.4/' --
include='10.4/unstable/' --include='10.4/unstable/crypto/' --
include='10.4/unstable/crypto/finkinfo/' --include='10.4/unstable/
crypto/finkinfo/*/' --include='10.4/unstable/crypto/finkinfo/*' --
include='10.4/unstable/crypto/finkinfo/**/*' --include='VERSION' --
include='DISTRIBUTION' --include='README' --exclude='**' 'rsync://
distfiles.master.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo' '/sw/fink/'

Should these be/are there 10.5 trees that should be here?

I've gone from a 500 Mhz G4 to a 8 core Mac Pro just this year(just a
bit of an upgrade), so I haven't been following the latest fink news
and was running 10.4.x on the old G4. I didn't copy /sw from the old
computer and rebuilt everything(was a mite bit faster on the Pro vs
the G4), but as I used Apple's migration utility when I got the Pro, I
wonder if there is an old configuration file somewhere outside the /sw
directory that might be causing an issue too.

A final question:

I'd like to go 64 bit with fink; is there somehow I can check to see
what packages are available for 64 bit? There are a couple I must have
and would have to stick with 32 bit for now if they are not available.

Thank you.

Do I really need gcc4 when I have the virtual gcc4.0?

I don't know why I can't get it to load gnomeprint or why it is
giving all of those gtk errors.

Let me know if at some point I should take this to the gourmet

support, but at some point these issues might be with gourmet itself
and not running it on a Mac.
When I'm ready to try my hand a building fink packages should I take
the discussion to fink-dev?

Thanks again for all of you help.

 What does it install into /sw/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ (or .../
 python2.3/..., depending on which python you chose)? Does it put
 Mk4py.so and metakit.py there? And does gourmet use the same python?

It doesn't look like it is installing anything in /sw/lib/python2.4/
site-packages/.(or 2.3)

make install gives:

mkdir -p /usr/local/include /usr/local/lib
/sw/bin/ginstall -c -m 644 ../unix/../include/mk4.h \
 ../unix/../include/mk4.inl \
 ../unix/../include/mk4str.h \

/sw/bin/ginstall -c libmk4.dylib /usr/local/lib
if [ '.dylib' = '.a' ]; then ranlib /usr/local/lib/libmk4.a; fi

if that is any clue.

BTW: how do I set fink's python 2.4 to be the system default python?
An alias to /sw/bin/python2.4?

after some more work:

I found this in the readme

To build the Mk4py extension on Unix, change the configure to:
 % ../unix/configure --with-python=dir-where-include/-is
 E.g.
 % ../unix/configure --with-tcl=/usr/include --with-python=/usr

so I built with:

../unix/configure --with-python=/sw

it complained about the -o option here:

Mk4py$(BUNDLE_SUFFIX): $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS) $(LINK_SPECIAL_FILES)
$(BUNDLE_LD) -o $@ $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS) $(LINK_SPECIAL_FLAGS)

so I removed the '-o'. Now make gives the error:

 Here you could introduce new variables BUNDLE_SUFFIX and BUNDLE_LD
 and then modify the Makefile.in file to use these two for the
 python module. There are certainly a couple of other possibilities
 to achieve the same goal.

Changed configure.in to:
case $build_os in

 SHLIB_SUFFIX=.dylib
 SHLIB_LD=g++ -dynamiclib -flat_namespace -undefined suppress
 STRIP_FLAGS=-S
 BUNDLE_SUFFIX=.so
 BUNDLE_LD=g++ -bundle -flat_namespace -undefined suppress

and Makefile.in :

Mk4py$(BUNDLE_SUFFIX): $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS) $(LINK_SPECIAL_FILES)
$(BUNDLE_LD) -o $@ $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS) $(LINK_SPECIAL_FLAGS)

and am still receiving the metakit import error when running gourmet.

There is this in makefile.in:

Mk4py$(LIB_SUFFIX): $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS)
ar cru $@ $(PYOBJS) $(LOBJS)
ranlib $@

do I need to do something with it? also:

install-python: Mk4py$(LIBEXT)
$(INSTALL_PROGRAM) Mk4py$(LIBEXT) $(DESTDIR)$(pylibdir)
$(INSTALL_PROGRAM) $(srcdir)/../python/metakit.py $(DESTDIR)$(pylibdir)
and

python: Makefile Mk4py$(LIBEXT)

Does BUNDLE_SUFFIX and BUNDLE_LD and replace SHLIB_SUFFIX and
SHLIB_LD? Is there something I need to do with (LIBEXT)?

Or is this from configure.in the reason it is not a bundle, LIBEXT
being set to SHLIB_SUFFIX which is .dylib?

if test $SHARED_BUILD = 1; then
   LIBEXT=$SHLIB_SUFFIX
else
   LIBEXT=$LIB_SUFFIX

Odd, I have my ISP's spam filter off. I think I've received mail from
you before too.

 1. It wants the metakit python module, and there is no Fink package
 for this yet. But making one should not be too difficult either. It
 is a small project, and I got it to compile with only one little
 change: It compiles its python module as Mk4py.dylib which is
 wrong, it needs to be Mk4py.so. So one has to change that name and
 also a compiler flag -dynamiclib to -bundle.

Ok, changed the make file here:

INSTALL = /sw/bin/ginstall -c
INSTALL_DATA = ${INSTALL} -m 644
INSTALL_PROGRAM = ${INSTALL}
LIB_SUFFIX = .a
SHLIB_SUFFIX = .dylib
SHLIB_LD = g++ -bundle -flat_namespace -undefined suppress
SHLIB_FLAGS = -shared
STRIP_FLAGS = -S
LIBEXT = .so
EXEEXT =
DESTDIR=

but if I changed SHLIB_SUFFIX = .dylib to .so it wouldn't make and
gave me:
g++ -g -O2  -fPIC -I../unix/../include -I../unix/../src -I. -o dump \
 ../unix/../demos/dump.cpp libmk4.so  -lpthread
/usr/bin/ld: libmk4.so is input for the dynamic link editor, is not
relocatable by the static link editor again
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [dump] Error 1

so I left SHLIB_SUFFIX = .dylib alone and renamed /usr/local/lib
libmk4.dylib to libmk4.so

this a bad idea/problem?

Gourmet built, but gives me the following from the terminal:

$ gourmet

Do I do this by running the file through md5sum and pasting that

 Hmm. What sort of box is this on?

10.4.7 PPC

 Try the following 2 commands:

 otool -h /sw/lib/libgmp.3.dylib

Mach header
   magic cputype cpusubtype filetype ncmds sizeofcmds flags
0xfeedface  18100  6 9   1324 0x0085

 otool -h /sw/bin/freshclam

Mach header
   magic cputype cpusubtype filetype ncmds sizeofcmds flags
0xfeedface  18  0  216   1716 0x0085

 See what the cpusubtype column says in each case. You may just need
 to rebuild clamav.
rebuilding gave me this;

[Fink-users] rename

2006-07-16 Thread Andrew Hartung
Is there a fink package that has the command 'rename'? Every time I
try to run it I get a 'command not found' error, even though 'man
rename' works. I know I can just 'mv' the file but not having rename
annoys me.

Re: [Fink-users] xfree86 gnome, rootless, browser

2006-07-13 Thread Andrew Hartung
Running gnome either with gnome-session or gnome-panel starts up
gnome, but there are no apps in the applications menu or any way to
access the control panel. What do I need to do to have a fully
functional gnome? I installed it with bundle-gnome.

I'd search the archives but they are down.

 fink info bundle-gnome suggests running gnome-panel rather than
 gnome-session for rootless mode. (GNOME doesn't have the turn off

 I believe they want a browser that's a single executable file, rather
 than a bundle (like an OS X .app). There are ways around this, e.g.
 via AppleScript. A simple alternative option is that if Camino is
 set
 to be your default browser, then you should be able to set your
 browser to be the open command.

 A bit quick on the button there:

 Since open will try to use the default browser to open a URL, in
 this case Camino will be used. Other people may get Safari, Firefox,
 etc., depending on their own default browser setting.

 Remind us what version of, say, gnome-panel you've installed. There
 has been a long-standing issue with the version in the unstable tree
 not having menu support due to to issues with collisions between the
 GNOME menu and KDE menu. These are gradually being resolved, but
 since GNOME hasn't had a full-time maintainer for a while so
 progress has been somewhat slowed.

2.6.2-1027. If I need to pull something from the stable tree to fix
this, please remind me of what I need to do without having to change
my fink.conf file. Or should I just install kde? Is it maintained
better?

Actually, what I would like is for something to behave like Apple's
X11 – I would only use terminal.app and really couldn't see much
different from x apps and Mac apps. I don't really need a full
desktop environment.

I had all of this Xwindows stuff figured out a few years ago, but
forgot most of it when Apple released theirs.

I'm not using Apple's x11 because I can't find my 10.4 install disks
and the older version you can download was giving me problems with
pan. I installed gnome because I didn't know the difference between a
desktop environment and a window manager. The line blurs between the

 You would indeed have to follow the X11 removal process from the FAQ.
 GNOME _absolutely_ requires some form of underlying X11 (XFree86,

 Are you using Apple's X11? It _should_ have the missing dylib, so
 maybe you're just suffering from a missing file from your X11User

running it now gives:

Prerelease versions of

Mac OS X might work with Fink, but there are no guarantees.

[Fink-users] error launching gnucash

2004-12-12 Thread Andrew Hartung
I've had gnucash working fine and have not installed anything since it
was installed. I get the following from the terminal while trying to
launch it:

ERROR: Unbound variable: dEfine-moDule

[Fink-users] gnome

2003-11-15 Thread Andrew Hartung
Can someone please point me to the docs for how to set up my .xinitrc
for gnome please? I can't for the life of me find it in the /sw/share
directory, nor much in the archives(which I find difficult to search
through). I'm on a fresh 10.2.8 install with xfree86 4.3.0-15 and
gnome. I've never run gnome before, previously using oroborusx long
ago(it seems to not be updated anymore?), or recently Apple's X11, but
as we all know the bastards pulled all non 10.3 X11 downloads. Between
that pull and the Java 1.4.1 pull I am going mad(er).

Thank you,

I 'fetched' the vim source, will adding it to the 'ConfigureParams'

Yep, sure it is 6.2 and did install it with fink. Interestingly, when I

there was both /vim61 and /vim62 directories there, but the vim61

That being said, I think it would be outstanding if Apple threw its

That and zips are notoriously unreliable.

A series of 7 articles on backup strategy can be found here at Tidbits:

To get a really solid backup it comes down to having a tape drive and a
copy of Retrospect. You rotate you media in case one tape fails and
take a backup copy off site. A backup doesn't help if it burns up with
the rest of your office. This may be overkill for home users(I don't do
it), but if your data is more valuable than your computer, it is the
only way to go.

Thanks for all of the tips Kow, some good stuff there.

thought of these two problems of package meta-data:
1. These different entities' tools and methods are not terribly

well).
2. Packages of different types - such as a perl modules, command-line

have varying degrees and methods of self-documentation.

Wouldn't that be man pages or the info system?

Re: [Fink-users] 0.5.0 Update

I wrote a message here a couple of days ago about how poorly
documented most
UNIX apps are. I said that most of the man pages were written by

Writing good technical documentation is not easy and being a developer
does not make one automatically good at it. The man pages are written
from the point of view of developers, as it is easy to write from your
own viewpoint, not from the viewpoint of someone new to unix.
Developers may get more out of the man pages because they are familiar
with the terminology and environment being discussed.

It is not the responsibility of open source developers to educate the
user to a certain level so s/he can understanding all of the
documentation. It is the user's responsibility to be familiar enough
with the technology involved so as not to need their hand being held
through the whole process. There are many excellent books on the unix
world published by Orielly, some are even free, read some.

Expectations and practices common to commercial software do not apply
here, though most companies today do not have documentation for their
products as good as many man pages, nor do they update their product as
often as is needed.

Keep in mind that 'release early and often' is one of the mantras of
the open source movement; the early releases allow others to access the
code and help with development from the start, the often is so others
can see and help with the patches.

But I don't think that is an
excuse to forgo good documentation

Again, most unix documentation is on par or above many commercial
packages. There is no excuse needed here, as there is no expectation.

and sound software development and
deployment.

You don't understand the development cycle of the open source movement
and are mistaking early release as poor quality, see above.

Fink is at version 0.5. That in it self says that the project is
considered 'pre-release' and missing features. It is not being
advertised as complete.

I'm a graphic designer by trade. Oftentimes when I am working on a
project,
I assume that the audience--the end user--will understand something
because
it's so obvious. But to be a good designer is to step back and really
think
about the audience and realize that maybe they WON'T understand
something
because indeed, I as the designer was too close to it. I think this
same
principle applies in the case of software design (and not mention other
aspects of everyday life, like programming a universal remote).

Most open source projects are aimed at developers and it is only lately
that their audience has broadened. Also, most projects are started
because the developer has a need for a type of program that doesn't
exist. It is free and open so everyone can help with the development
and share the benefits. The goal is never profit, but utility.

The user should be grateful for it being free; you are not buying
anything and so are entitled to nothing. If anything the user should
feel obliged to help in some way, though there is no expectation from
the developers to do so. If you don't like it, write your own program,
that's what the open source developers did. I don't mean that in a
nasty way, but that it is your choice to go elsewhere with no loss as
you have nothing invested.

 nget 0.21-1 Downloader for binary news postings

Thank you, that does just what I want. Sometimes unix is deceptively
easy.

[Fink-users] lesson learned

2002-11-19 Thread Andrew Hartung
I deleted the 'fr' directory from '/sw/share/man/', thinking I wouldn't
need it as I don't speak french. while trying to update tornado the
compile failed as it couldn't find this directory to put files in. I
recreated it and compiled it with no problems, so everything is fine
now.

Is this common unix behavior with a missing directory(specifically a
man directory) during a compile? I wont be deleting directories for the
fun of it anymore.

[Fink-users] xfree86 base

How long should I allow for the unpacking of xfree86-base?

Preparing to replace xfree86-base-shlibs 4.2.0.1-3 (using
.../xfree86-base-shlibs_4.2.0.1-3_darwin-powerpc.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xfree86-base-shlibs ...
Preparing to replace xfree86-base 4.2.0.1-2 (using
.../xfree86-base_4.2.0.1-3_darwin-powerpc.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xfree86-base ...

It seems to be taking a very long time at this last step. I understand
that compiling takes quite a long time, but it seems stuck now. top
shows around 75% cpu idle, but the system has slowed to a crawl.

[Fink-users] Corrupted font

2002-10-19 Thread Andrew Hartung
I think I may have a corrupted font, certain applications stall when
loading, like BBedit, textedit, Acrobat Reader.

Is there a unix/fink/command line tool to fix damaged fonts? Just being
able to identify it would really help.

My system booted in console mode the other day, and I don't know why. I
wonder if that has anything to do with this.

Thank you,
Andrew Hartung

 To turn that question around, are there any benefits to doing that? If
 you know you trust everyone that might end up using your computer --
 including people logging in over networks etc -- then hey go for it.

I live alone and have a firewall up. The reason I want it that way is
to make it easier to delete old source, builds, etc... using the finder.

[Fink-users] cvs

2002-09-12 Thread Andrew Hartung

This my be a stupid question.

Is this:

sudo /sw/bin/fink  selfupdate

Your Fink installation is set up to update package descriptions
directly from
CVS. Do you want to use this setup and update now? [Y/n]

I will now run the cvs command to retrieve the latest package
descriptions.
After that, the core packages will be updated right away; you should
then
update the other packages using commands like 'fink update-all'.

cvs -z3 update -d -P

The same as this:

$ fink selfupdate -cvs

It would seem that it obviously is, but I see so many people being
directed to do 'fink selfupdate -cvs', and no mention of changing
finks settings to do the above.

Thank you,
Andrew Hartung

[Fink-users] A question about how fink works

2002-09-04 Thread Andrew Hartung

I have a question for curiosity sake only:

Sometimes when I do an update [fink update-all] after a [fink
self-update] some packages that are listed as outdated [fink list -o =
(i)] immediately start compiling without downloading anything new. I
want to think I need to download new source, but obviously I'm wrong;
why?
