I'll call a couple of vets tomorrow. But $26 dollars sounds about right for
just the coggins. Health certificates will run more, depending upon which
one you get. The international one is the most expensive. But, why have the
vet. come to your place? My horses look forward to riding in the trailer. I
haul them to the vet., not so much to save, bucks, but to keep everybody
used to the trailer. Never, know when an emergency, might come up, in the
middle of the night, and you will have to move fast.
I know a lot of people who show, and travel without papers, if you get
caught, it will cost you big time.
I was in route from Florida, to Idaho several years ago, was flagged down
on the Utah/Idaho border on a Sunday. I had 5 horses, all with brand
certificates, and the proper health paper work. They let me pass through,
only because I had not crossed into Ar., where there was an outbreak of
something.

Hi Fred,

I did look at your mare going through the cones course at Happs. [ The
scores have been up for a few days now]
She is a good looking mare, good movement.. What an improvement from
Libby. Looks like a little work might have paid off. The harness looks
adjusted correctly. The only thing that I see, and this was several times,
the head going up, and her back then inverting. This is caused by asking for
a turn when she is on the wrong hind foot. [ like dancing with your wife,
and you step on her foot] Since she is such a forgiving mare, she just
jerks, and says, oh well'. Some, horse would bolt, or start bucking,
and kicking. Again, I would suggest 2 books, only 20 dollars, [6 skinny
mochas cost about 20 dollars] Horses don't Lie and Riding the Dark
Horse by Chris Irwin, [Amazon.com] He explains what happens when you ask
for a turn on the wrong foot.

Will you be going to Lincoln Creek? It is another great place, good people,
good horses.

Take care,

*...for the very informative (layman) article on Coggins. Although we don't
show (but hope to a teensy bit in the future), I would certainly be willing
to have a current test done on our guys, even if it was in-state.
Fortunately, our place is so dry, we hardly have flies, much less horseflies
(haven't seen ANY for more than 10 years!), so I know we are pretty safe at
this time (knock wood). If we showed and traveled as much as many on the
list seem to do, I'd certainly do what I could to assure my and my fellow
horseman's peace of mind. Not exactly health insurance, but I bet the
monthly breakdown of cost for a Coggins is a heck of alot cheaper than some
of the horse insurance premiums. Like Jerry said, if you want to play, you
have to pay.*

I am trying to figure out how ( besides a small cost compared to the
consequences ) not having a coggins test or showing in venues that
require them is a BAD thing. I think that the NFHR rule helping
protect our Fjords is a good thing.

Here is an easy to read article about why the coggins test is required
in most states.

I'm sure I speak for all the members of the Northeast Fjord Horse Assoc.
(NFHA) when I say we share everyone's distress both at Karen Cabic's
personal loss and at the unfortunate cancellation of the Finger Lakes
Show. We all can relate to the difficulty of losing a parent and to the
amount of hard work that goes in to putting on a show.

For many years, the Finger Lakes Show Committee has put on a well run and
fun show that NFHA has helped support through member participation, and by
use of our blanket insurance coverage for their event. In turn, many NY
Fjord owners have participated in the NFHA annual show, formerly held for
many years at the Green Mountain Horse Association (GMHA) facility in
Woodstock, VT until moving to a site in Spencer Mass, the past two
seasons.

This year, the show venue has been relocated back to Vermont, at the
lovely Winchester Stables Equine Center in Newfane, VT. Winchester Stables
is about 12 miles north of Brattleboro, VT (southern Vermont), just off VT
Route 30. Winchester Stables is under very helpful and cooperative new
management, and the show promises to be a lot of fun. Entrants can arrive
any time the week of the show, and stalls will be available in the WS
barn.

Friday evening will be devoted to gymkhana games, and those will be
followed by a FREE cookout and wine/cheese reception hosted by NFHA. Most
ridden classes (including dressage) will be on Saturday, followed by an
excellent buffet banquet ($20 per person) with cash bar at the nearby
Brattleboro Country club.

Sunday will be focused on driven classes, also including driven dressage.

This message is from: Tamarack Lamb Wool [EMAIL PROTECTED]

With great regrets I have decided to part with Glori, a 2 1/2 year old
spayed female Polish Tatra. She is a very large dog, white long hair, very
attractive. Glori was raised to be a sheep guarding dog, but has flunked
sheep 201 as she is inclined to play with newborn lambs and will not give it
up. She has also made it clear, she would much rather be a companion to
people and horses than sheep. I mention her here, because as it turns out,
her favorite animals on the farm are the horses. I imported Glori as a pup
from Poland. The seller never supplied the registration papers.

Glori is very sweet with people, basically a very quiet dog unless there is
an intruder. She is good about staying home. She did keep her sheep safe
from wolves and was witnessed doing so on two occaisions.

I would like to see Glori go to a farm with a minimum of 20 acres to call
her own, with owners who would give her the kind of attention she would like
to get. I just had her spayed and utd on shots etc. She does test
possitive to Lyme disease (very common here) but is not ill or symptomatic
(some dogs never get sick from lyme disease). I will discuss treatment
options with her new owner. Glori is not recommended to farms with small
livestock (i.e. baby goats, lambs, or poultry).

I paid $1000 plus shipping for Glori as a pup from Poland. I would like to
get $300 for her recent vet work, but a really good home is most important.

Hi Bonnie,

We so show at other, all breed, shows and expos in Washington State, and no,
none of them that we have been to requires a Coggins or Health Certificate.

I realize I forgot to post an update on our experience at the Skagit Rare
Breeds Expo. It was very well-run for a first-year show. Kudos to Patty
Kelley, the manager. Not only was she organized, she was very friendly and
eager to help whenever asked. Aside from seeing the cool horses from the
different breeds, a highlight of the weekend was the Vaulting demo. Peggy
Enge's daughter, Mackenzie, performed as part of this group. Way to go girl!

Erlend, of course, got the usual response to Fjordhorses - every time he was
out of his stall he got mobbed. Unfortunately, they allways say, He's so
Cute! Like any stallion, Erlend finds this annoying, and much prefers
Awesome! My talented friend and neighbor, Ellie Keen, showed off his gaits
to Greig, after the announcer finished the script about the breed and about
this particular Fjord. We also celebrated His Majesty's 20th birthday that
weekend - quietly - we didn't want him to learn how old he is. He still
thinks he's 10.

Erlend was kicked earlier this season by a mare who didn't properly
appreciate the honor of being bred to Mr Spectactular. Although the wound
went to the bone, it did not cause any chipping, and was just below the
tendons and ligaments that attach to the stifle. The vet several times
called him a very lucky horse.
Erlend was still a little stiff at the Expo, so we arranged for his
first-ever acupuncture treatment from the attending Vet, Dr Hannah
Evergreen. It was very interesting and very helpful. He almost dozed off - a
typical response, I learned. I expect to use it more.

Finally, it was fun to visit with other local Fjord owners, most of whom we
had not met. I especially enjoyed talking with Krist Martinsen and his wife.

Well, it's sunny today, and Mr Bigshot is enjoying his conjugal visit by
Judy Phelp's Zaria, a lovely young lady. You can really see her sire,
Flotren, in her. Rannita, his dam, was also imported from Norway by Julie
Will and Darryl Wolford. I can't wait to see this baby!

I'm surprised that California only costs about $45 a visit. her for a
scheduled visit(planned 2 weeks ahead of time and maybe cancelled by

have 4 horse vets within a 30 mile radius. Now emergency calls start at
100.00- 150.00 day time after hours about 50.00 more. this will get 1 horse
looked at, labs sutures shots are all add ons. but the coggins is 26.00 for
the past 5 years and interstate health papers are 30.00 $5.00 extra for
signing any papers for the registry like the vet inspection, and such.
I give my own shots or take any body in for office visits. $25.00 but
also has to be scheduled and be on time there or they skip you.

Foot in Mouth Disease outbreak

2007-07-30 Thread Karen McCarthy

This message is from: Karen McCarthy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Its confirmed: I recently tested positive for Foot in Mouth. One of the
prominent symptoms is not thinking through ones written or spoken thoughts.
Another symptom specific to FIM as it relates to emails only, is sending out
emails intended for individuals, to the whole list. Tough disease, but
thanks to the response from this List, the disease was pretty easy to
diagnose, and with a minimum of negative FB, I should be back on course in
due time, w/ the correct paperwork in hand.
With the above declaration aside, I really didn't mean to convey that
Coggins/health papers were a *total* waste of time in general, but in the
specific case of traveling short distances to a show, in the same or very
similar geographical (bio) region, I think it is a bit overcautious. Just
fyi so you all don't think I am a total slacker, I do pull papers for all
out of state shows, selling horses and trips to breed mares etc. I have
current brand inspections (Nevada) on all of my horses, which I believe
Oregon will recognize, unless of course the horse is sold, then new papers
are issued. Most recently I pulled health/Coggins on all 11 horses that we
moved to Oregon in Janruary. (The Coggins just expired July 20th). In
addition to the brand inspections on about 1/2 the horses, I won't tell you
what all that cost, but suffice to say it could have been a nice new single
harness or 3-4 tons of good hay. Not once in our journey did we have to
produce the paperwork. Since the big move, only 3 of these horses have gone
more than 20 miles off of the ranch. We have no neighboring horses near
enough to touch noses, and hardly any flies (really! My 'sweet Itch'
poster-mare, Idelle is loving life up here. No flysheet or Prednisone!
Flyspray 1x week at that.)

To chime in on the local costs of this paperwork, I just checked w/ my vet
this morning on current pricing and here is the breakdown, and it ain't EVEN
close to $26...Ranch call: $45, Coggins: $45 (one cert. covers both mares),
vet Cert. $45 ea.,= $180.00.
Add in the cost of (1) microchip $25, insertion by vet + filling out NFHR
vet cert. $65, Eval fees (1 Perf. test, 1 Conf. test.) $276, and the whole
enchilada to bring 2 mares to the Eval, (excluding show fees/stabling
Thurs.Sat. + all fuel) is: $546.00 So, I'll stop whining about the costs of
a measly Coggins/health cert, but the NEXT time some prospective
(tire-kicker) buyer complains about the cost of my horses, I'll be tempted
to whip out an Excel spreadsheet so they can see the BIG picture of what it
actually costs to produce good horses. All in all, show fees are but a few
oats in the bucket...

Now I'll go back to getting the mares ready and try to keep out of
trouble...Hopefully I'll see (some of) you at Moses Lake!

Any horse brought into the state of Idaho or born here is supposed to be
inspected along with the papers and bill of sale by a state veterinarian.  In
our area they are contacted through the state police.  Whether they have a
brand or not doesn't matter.  You can get a temporary or a permanent with the
horse picture on it. Supposedly, when you transport that animal anywhere
within or outside the state you should have those papers.  Most of us don't,
but we tiptoe by the weigh stations and anyone pulling a trailer can be pulled
over and the animals checked.

I am getting my website ready and am going to put on an excel spreadsheet  or
breakdown to explain prices.   I do not see how anyone can sell a weanling for
less than $3500 - 4,000 and it escalates from there.  And I did not even
calculate in shows and transport and the $1800 in fencing I just replaced this
week   That's owning the stalliion and mares and having pasture.  So whip out
that spreadsheet- they should know.   It is a good idea.

I am surprised it is not required of all.  I am supposed to have a brand
inspection, Coggins and health if I travel outside the state of Idaho or  want
to come back into it. If I am caught going through a check station without it,
the consequences are not pleasant or cheap.   I used to do all the coggins
testing on this side of the state, it is cheap, as accurate as any test can be
and there are positives even in Idaho and Washington .  This disease is not
treatable, will result in the euthanization, or quarantine for life  of your
horse if it catches it and can be transmitted by biting insects including
flies and possibly close association.  The Northwestern States have been
relatively free of it, unlike some of the southern states, but in years like
this where the heat is unusual, we will most likely see higher activity of
diseases which are insect born.Because horses are not regulated as food
animals, when states do have positives, they are not well publicized, so you
may not even know you are in an area where there have been positives. The test
is good for 6 months, although your health certs may have shorter time limits
Why risk it? I  might not want to have my horses stabled next to someones
horses who have not been tested.
Kathy in Southern Idaho.

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As stated why is this a requirement for Moses Lake?  The
 rest of the  horse
shows in Washington State do not require it.  If it were an
 issue for  this
state it would be mandated and regulated by the
State. That is why it is
there for interstate travelers.   As fjord shows
 and  activities grow instate this
would become an even bigger hassle as coggins and  health
 certificates must
have the place and date that you are going and are only
 valid for a certain
time.   Vets are expensive in Western Washington
 farm calls range from 65-100$
with health certificates and coggins now the  expense is
 between  220-250$ per
 horse.   That adds up  .
   I would certainly support this
for out of  state or out of country
 horses.

Since I'm new to horses at 60, what is a brand inspection? There is no
brand on my Fjord. Are we supposed to carry our original Registration
Certificate? Also, I don't remember my horse getting a Rabies shot. I know
my Yorkie had hers but never heard of horses getting rabies shots.

A registration certificate isn't at all the same as a brand inspection.
Here's a link to the correct info for Idaho:
http://www.isp.state.id.us/brands/index.html

If there is a reasonable chance that your Yorkie could encounter a rabid
animal, it is even more likely that pastured horses will, so rabies
vaccinations for horses are a wise idea. All my horses get rabies shots.

Addendum - over the last few years there have been two herds of free-roaming
horses that were destroyed because of positive coggins tests.  So it is also
in Utah.

From the Watanabes - no Coggins required for for in-state horses
 entering
the Eval. Coggins is still required for the show.

Still expecting to bring Erlend to the Eval only.

RE: Health and Coggins in WA

2007-07-30 Thread fjords
This message is from: fjords [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My vet charges $15 per horse plus mileage for a vet call. I consider this
very reasonable. Coggins is $30 per horse.

Each year in April I have the vet out to check our 3 horses teeth (float if
needed), do 6 month Health Certificates (covering WA, OR, ID MT), Coggins,
Nasal Strangles and while he's here I have him give them WNV and 5-way.

By doing this I am cleared to go anywhere I want to go in the Pacific
Northwest and don't have to worry about getting documents in a hurry.

Our saddle club holds two open shows each year. It is up to the show
committee to determine whether they want to require health
certificate/Coggins for entrants. In the past the WSH required it for WSH
shows. It is not required by WSH currently.

For me, personally, it is peace of mind to have my horses Coggins tested. I
also consider it part of being a responsible owner.

I give all of my own injections, worming, etc. throughout the year but feel
it's important to have my vet go over them once a year.

health and coggins cost

2007-07-30 Thread Cheryl
This message is from: Cheryl [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In my state..Colorado. I take my horses to the vet so there is no farm call
fee.I use it as an excuse to get them in the trailer,if I have extra room I
throw a baby in for a learning experience.Coggins cost me $26.00 per head
total. Since the horse is there for a blood draw my vet looks everyone over
anyway and does my health certs at no cost. Even if it cost $50.00 isn't
your horse worth it? If it isn't, it probably isn't worth taking to the
show.

OK now I'm REALLY going back to lurkdome.
