Baling Twine Recycling
This message is from: Michele Noonan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well in Montana, I think every good outbuilding, horse trailer and fence is put together with Baling Twine My old horse trailer was notorious for several pieces being tied together, It never broke. You would be AMAZED at what I have used that stuff for. I should write a book. BUT, I do however have a SERIOUS issue with it being left laying around and my children will tell you, it is a sure fire way to get mom hopping mad and a big lecture about safety and some grounding (at the least) if I see it anywhere floating around the property. It is extremely dangerous when partially frozen into the ground or eaten. On another note. We do have a weanling filly for sale WHR Fiona. Sire: WHR Elsker and Dam: Tone. We always have a hard time emotionally, selling anything out of Tone. They are the nicest fillies (yep, all fillies) 1st place Weanling Fillies at Libby, Sweet and Nicely built. Does everything a weanling should. The 3 year old grandaughter can safely lead her around. (with supervision of course!) She stood tied at the trailer for hours at Libby while her mom was in 7 classes one day. Her price is $2200.00 She will make a nice show pony and should be very fast like her mom! ( Tone usually only gets beat by Dusty in fast classes) We hauled to a local barn today, We took WHR Elsker and also rode our young guy Knutsen Fjord's Soren, who is doing awesome at the trainers I don't ride much. Mandy, my daughter is the main rider here, however, she encouraged me to get on Elsker and ride and I did. He was wonderful and It was great for me to ride someone other than my mare Tone. It was a great day! Michele Noonan Stevensville, Mt The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

This message is from: Pat Holland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Not sure if any of you are following the eventing world but Karen O'Connor just took an individual gold at the Pan Am games in Argentina with a 14-1 hd PONY. (He is by a Thoroughbred and out of an Arab/Shetland x mare.) The Pan Am Games are three star, but according to the article, Karen said some of the exercises were four star, as did Phillip Dutton. There might be photos of this little guy, named Theodore O'Connor aka Teddy on www.useventing.com . Interesting story - maybe some day we'll see a Fjord there? re: 4-legged termite remedies
This message is from: Claudia [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi, In regard to the farm-eating Fjords: I just have one Fjord, who shares the farm with two old Morgans and a Trakehner. The only things that in my experience work for horses are either electricity or solid oak. Anything else eventually gets eaten or knocked down by butt-rubbing. Particle board and plywood are useless with horses of any kind. I think they are attracted to the glue mixtures used to bond the layers, etc. They will chew it up almost immediately. When we moved here we bought loads of white oak and put it up with the boards on the inside of the fence, so that even with rubbing, the boards would stay up. They can't eat it--it's too hard--so it stays up. The only disadvantage is that it's hard to put a nail into when it's green--it's almost mandatory to use a drill. And when it is dry, it is like steel and only a compression nailer will go through it. We have had to replace the posts from time to time with treated 4X4's, and eventually those get eaten unless a hotwire makes fooling around with them uncomfortable. I don't use hay feeders because it's just another thing to repair after they wreck it, and it's something to run into and get hurt if they gang up on each other. I just feed hay on the ground. In the barn run-in I feed hay in a water tank that developed a leak and won't hold water. It keeps the hay from blowing around so much, and is light enough that I can dump it out to avoid having moldy ick in the bottom. After dumping however, it has to be wired to a post, because Vergel drags it outside to play with if I don't. In the winter I board my Trakehner at a big warmblood place with an indoor, and they have great fences. They used treated posts and three strands of electric rope. The posts are safe because the horses can't chew on them without getting a shock from the fence. If someone gets chased into the fence, it is stretchy so it gives a little and is not dangerous. The posts don't have to be as close together as they do for boards, and the fence is easy to take down if you need to get a hay mower or something into the field. The rope strands are about the diameter of clothesline, so they aren't flapping in the wind like that white electric tape, and therefore they don't stretch out and sag. Another thing they do there is provide the horses with something it's OK to chew, like a log with bark on it. Anyone who has ever put horses in a pasture with nice trees knows what happens to the trees in short order. Knowing this, the owners periodically dump a log in each pasture, with the bark still on. The horses chew on it like a dog will chew on a rawhide bone, and consequently are not chewing on things they shouldn't be. They put a log in each pasture maybe two or three times a year. One log will keep the horses chewing on it for a long, long time. Critics will say the bark isn't good for them, but eating particle board and plywood isn't any better, so at least they aren't dismantling the paddocks when they have a log chewie. Fortunately I don't seem to have the chewing problems at home that I read about on the List, but if they started, the first thing I would try is a log with bark. Hope this helps. Claudia from Wisconsin where it has been sunny and in the mid 60's recently! :) The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

RE: Baling Twine Recycling
This message is from: Jeanne [EMAIL PROTECTED] I love this topic of hay twine recycling. How true it is! We have an old bit hanging in the barn alley, which has become our twine holder. Got twine in the tack room, horse trailer, lots of it on hand. We use it for hanging water buckets at shows. Another great use is for tying horses to hitching rails or horsetrailers, who might have tendencies to dangerously fly back (of course I'm not talking about fjord horses) ;-) We use a single strand of hay twine, to loop the lead ropes through... if they want to pull... they'll at least 'feel' the twine, and if they feel the need to fly back 90mph... at least they won't break their necks, only the hay twine. We use it on our cross-ties, as well, to keep the barn in tact, if the horse (still not speaking about fjords!) decides they 'need to leave'. My kids have even braided hay twine together to make little ropes, to use as ties in the barn. Jeanne - Berthoud, CO ~ Fall is officially here and my ponies are fuzzy and FAT. This message is from: Gail Russell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Our black walnuts fall near a road. The crows pick them up, sit on the power line and drop them...trying to get them to crack. What actually happens is they land on the road, people drive over them, and the crows eat them. I enjoy aiming for them (near the side of the road) and watching the crows flock down in my rear view mirror to get them. Much better sport than taking them to the landfill. Opinions Needed! College Paper Topic on Fjords!!
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi everyone! I am currently a student at Murray State University in Murray Kentucky, and in my English Composition class, it has been assigned to write an argument paper on a controversial issue. I spoke to my professor, and I have chosen to not write on a major issue discussed in the popular media, instead (and it was approved) I have chosen the topic: Whether or not Norwegian Fjords Horses with white markings should be bred So, being that there is such a variety of fjord owners, breeders, trainers, judges and so forth on the digest, it will then be virtually my primary source. So I need opinions and any helpful information you might have on the issue. Such as: For statistical purposes: roughly how many fjords with white markings have you encountered (no names needed, just numbers)? Simply your overall opinion (ANY information will be helpful) Any knowledge on genetics and how this trait developed. If allowed, should there be a limit (ex: white spot on head should be no larger than 1 inch in diameter)? Should the marking be taken into consideration in evaluations and halter show classes on conformation? And really anything else that you can think of. My professor does realize that we are limited on printed resources, being that it is not debated on the major media, therefore your opinions are very very important and I truly appreciate anything that you have to share! Thank you all, hope to hear from you and take care! Robin L Holland 8521 Springer Hall Murray KY 42071 815-858-4042 The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw

Rescue ??? no way
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Not picking on the original poster, but I have done some homework here. These Fjord foals are for sale. Yesthey are being marketed by a rescue group. They have been marketed by this and other rescue groups ( pmurescue.org ) ect. comming from the same BREEDER, who, even after detailing on their own ranch's webpage as being out of the Equine Industry for going on 4 years now, are still breeding and breeding and breeding and breeding many Fjord, Fjord cross's, Drafts, Canadians * bred to Fjord stallions ect. ect. ect. Check out the BREEDERS web page www.ourbluemoonranch.com and you can see their mares, stallions including registered Canadian Fjord studs Marvin and 40 along with the same bred Fjord foals, now $2,000. ( Canadian Fjord registry currently allows cross breeding Fjords, just FYI, nothing fishy there ) In my always not so humble opinion, the RESCUE INDUSTRY is going strong. A few years ago when Wyeth had contracts with all now but a few Manitoba PMU ranchs, and allowed their breeders to place rescue foals with rescue groups to avoid the babies resulting from the breeding of mares for the Premerin lines going to the canners, there were legit rescues. Now ??? Dealing with BREEDERS who insist on re-breeding their Premerin line mares over and over, than selling foals through rescue groups is just HELPING CREATE THE MARKET FOR UNWANTED, GLUT FOALS of every type. Here are a few brain teaser's for you. Why are these foals being advertised as PMU rescues, when the breeders have not had contracts going on 4 years now ? Why, if the ranch's are in such DIRE straights, are they breeding the same Fjord stallions, Marvin and 40, to both Fjord mares, also being advertised as rescues, as well as cross breeding these Fjord stallions to Belgians, Canadians ect. year after year ? * check out their webpage carefully. This message is from: PamInPalmdale [EMAIL PROTECTED] One reason their prices are high, they include Coggins, Border fees and transportation up to 2000 miles. I have seen these same ads in years past, as well, and yes, the mares have all been exposed to a stallion once again this spring/summer. Gee. All rescue cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, no doubt about it. I was also noting that their prices are higher than a lot of horses on equine.com that are purebred and selectively bred and come from family homes where they have apparently been well loved and cared fornot used as a machine. Did you notice the hooves on some of these mares?!!! Melinda The FjordHorse List archives can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/rcepw
