I know the 'old folks' of the fjord horse in North America are
still here, so I wanted to let you know that my special boy passed
today. Colic got the best of him.

I posted this on facebook, a few sentences that tell you of the
special bond he and I had. He was my first horse, I got him at 40
years old, had him for 11 years. He absolutely knew he was on this
earth to teach me the love of horses. He succeeded in his
 objective. I'm am heartbroken.

Yep, he was a special horse. I would lay on my back underneath him
and clip his belly. He would stand like a rock. I know Ranec would
die to protect me, I mean it when he was afraid to die and leave me
alone - not because he loved me, but because he thought he had to
protect me. We spent the day together, I honestly knew around lunch
time it was the end, we spent the afternoon walking and talking,
but he wasn't sure I would be ok without him, so he fought hard. We
talked with our vet about options, and watched him. I told our vet
he was dying, she couldn't hardly believe it, but she knew he was.
He continued to fight while laying down, me hugging his neck and
head. I whispered to him I'll be all right Ranec, thank you for
our time together and I felt him exhale and that was it.

 Jim and Kay Barnhart.

I think one reason that you see fewer Fjords at the Grand Prix
 level is
that there are fewer Fjords period, if you compare the number of
 'big brown
horses' to the number of 'little yellow horses' showing. So it's not
surprising there are fewer at the upper levels.

I have a big chunky Fjord and a tall, graceful Trakehner and I
 love them
both. I have been schooling the Trakehner in dressage for the
 sixteen
years I've owned him, and he's very quick to learn and the upper
 level
movements are very easy for him, because of his conformation. I
 mostly
drive and trail ride with the Fjord, althoug

We are in Central FL and celebrate the few real cold days we get. Had
a real cold snap a couple days ago - got down to the 20's! All other
horses (it seems) in the state were bundled up in blankets and put in
barns. My 2 fjord girls partied all night in the pasture. I could
tell they had not come inside their shed by the few piles of poop.
They were fluffed up w/their wooly coats and in great spirits. My
worries are much more when the temps humidity is high. The girls
know to stand in front of their fans and they're good water drinkers
- as long as I've cleaned refreshed their tubs. :-)

What is the reasoning from the others to not vaccinate for rabies? Do
they do other vaccines, such as west nile or encephalitis? If I was
wanting / needing to skip vaccines it would not be rabies. Just not
worth that risk. One of my fjord mares does sometimes swell up at the
injection site but the last couple years she hasn't. She has a weaker
immune system than her daughter, who's never had any kind of reaction.

I, myself, had to go thru rabies injections after possible exposure
from some feral kittens I attempted to rescue. It was not fun.

And thank you, Robin, for the excellent information!

 Hi Everyone,

I know I have discussed this before.but I am completely almost
out of answers, or things to try.

My mare has had chronic mild diarrhea. She is not sick, no fever,
not lethargic. Her manure is soft to completely runny on any given
day. Sometimes two runny piles, the rest normal and formed.
Sometimes her hind end is covered (today) with spatters all over
her legs. Other times I call it liquid gas when she passes gas and
a small amount of manure fluid comes out just enough to make a
mess. I own stock in Costco baby wipes. Today I will have to give
her a bath it's that bad. I have had the vet out, did blood work,
nothing shows up. Vet thinks its the hay. I have tried local
Washington grass hay, still runny on and off, first and second
cutting Timothy, still runny, have tried eastern Washington orchard
grass, gets anywhere from projectile diarrhea to normal on that. I
have tried supplements like yeasac, bio sponge, pro-bios, aloe
juice seemed to help a little. She has been wormed regularly. She
gets 30 minutes to one hour on pasture per day. The diarrhea seems
 to be worse in!
wet weather which we have had lots of rain the last few days.

I have noticed some bloating on diarrhea days, which makes riding
impossible. I don't even try any more when I can tell she has had
many piles of loose manure. I have taken her out on rides when I
have seen maybe one runny pile prior to rising, and then I notice
her attitude is not as cooperative as usual, which I can understand.

I have thought about feeding papaya, to see if it helps. I have
taken her off all supplements and am sort of waiting it out before
I try something different. I have even read about the water if its
not the right ph levels it can upset their stomach? Anyone heard of
that? My well water runs about 6.4 ph. I have heard about adding
baking soda to the water to bring the ph level up?

I am really stumped as to why there would be normal formed piles
and then completely runny ones? Some days it's 50/50, one half
runny, the other half solid, normal. Other days maybe three runny
 piles the rest normal.

I also seems like the longer the grass in the pasture, the looser
the piles. I know I sound crazy, but this does drive me crazy.

 Comments welcome.

a horse like her to be forward but not in the way people think of
QH or Arabs being forward/bolting, etc. She's forward in that she
will just calmly walk thru a brick wall to do what she wants. He also

Hi everyone. Jo Wilgus here again.

As you may know, my girlfriend and i have written a children's
 book, titled
Blakely, the Norwegian Fjord Pony. It is a cute little book which
 was
written with our Grandchildren in mind. It seems to be a hit with
 them. My son
said he has read it to my Grandson (age 3) about 50 times. hee, hee.
Debi says her Grandson took it to school on share day. Debi has
 read it to her
Grandkids probably 1000 times. All good news.

Blakely is my mare's (Bryhyl Regn) foal and his sire is Obelisk ( Beth
Beymer). Blakely has gone on to do many fun events with his owner
 Christi
Kipple. Most recently the Starfire Farm Quadrille at the Denver
 Stock Show.
 WOW!

I have placed the book on ebay and i have set up a pay-pal account
 ( thank you
steve). The link is below. I hope you all will take a look. Even
 better,
place an order. It is a sweet and simple book, written with love
 and pride for
 the Fjord Horse.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

 powerful, as
nicknamed by Kay Van Natta, was humanely euthanized at noon,
 exactly 2 months
shy of his 18th birthday. the ringbone that had plagued him for the
 last two
years, and caused his retirement last fall, had gotten to the point
 where even
walking was painful. consulting with our vet, i realized that none
 of the
solutions that might be available had a chance of relieving his pain.

several days ago, while falling asleep, and sending him messages in
 my mind,
as i usually did, he sent me a vision. in fact he sent it three
 times, and it
was very clear to me that he was telling me it was ok to let go.

the procedure was done by a vet with whom i am friends, and my
 wonderful
friend carol supported me through the day. we brushed and combed
 him, and
stuffed him full of all the treats he loved.

he will be sorely missed. he had a huge presence to go along with
 his large
size, and he left a part of him with everyone he encountered. he
 leaves a
gaping hole in my life. i am very lucky to have skylar with a
 shoulder to cry
on, because to not have a fjord in my life is too painful to even
 imagine.

lifts them off their feet and laying sideways. Had to be terrifying.

Linda,
Your post brought tears to my eyes. I have had this very journey w/my
mare Cass her daughter (now 4.5 yrs.). When I got her in '08 it was
a toss up who was more scared of who. We were both terrified and she
was very pregnant. I began it all by simply being w/her. I would read
aloud to her. She would get closer closer. My husband actually got
a photo of the 1st time she put her nose thru the gate to whiff me
and I sat reading. It's priceless to me, as is she. We bonded thru
grooming. We bonded thru patience and no expectations. We celebrated
every single baby step. She was a horse who refused to pick up her
feet (had been done prior to me on a tip table), she could not be
patted on the neck, she reared at the very sound of an electric clipper.

But, because of her natural desire to be w/someone, she learned to
trust me. More importantly, I learned to trust her. Now, I can do
anything to her. Her favorite thing is cleaning her boobies which
we have to do often. I can get on my knees underneath her shave her
belly. I can point to her foot and she will lift it. I have even
ridden her a handful of times - something most said would never
happen. No matter what time I show up at the barn, she daughter
both come to greet me - even if they are way in the back pasture. One
of our big treats is to take a walk down the street, me beside Cass
(as you have done w/yours). When we come upon something she's not
sure of, she will gently touch my hand w/her nose. If she feels I'm
ok, then she's ok.

Building this relationship has been the most rewarding thing I've
ever done. It was done by me being a gentle and passive leader. One
they want to follow, not one they have to follow. If it can be done w/
mine, I know it can be done w/others.

I have been fighting this same issue since getting my mare in '08. I
keep her udder clean, clean, clean. I actually shave the base of her
tail as they do dressage horses. This was so sad the 1st time but she
always had her hair pulled and broken off anyway, this keeps it
looking neater. It also allows me to do my doctoring. I use a
natural product made here in FL called Toad Juice. Sometimes I will
use baby oil to keep her skin moistened where she scabs it up. I also
have to do this to her mane. She is a very allergic horse so we are

I'm just passing along this super little fjord
gelding for sale up here. Follow the craigslist post to contact his
 current

also. The ad doesn't really do him justice - he rides English/
 Western, drives
single or double, and packs. Rides out by himself, leads across
 bridges and
rivers, doesn't spook, has pulled farm implements and done parades.
 With
consistent riding he is fine with beginners. I would buy him back
 if I thought
I could use him enough, but I have a full barn now and a new
 business. I
originally purchased him because he needed to be rescued, and he
 came around
so nicely that I hated to sell him, but ultimately he is too small
 for us and
one too many horses. He is 15 now, but as far as I know has never
 been abused
or overworked, so he should have another 15 years of good use.
 Thanks for
 looking!

Hi List!
I've really enjoyed all the words of wisdom regarding growing old w/
our fjords. I'm on the opposite end of that spectrum and my coming 4
year old (May 17th) is leaving next weekend to go to my trainer's
farm. We're all very excited about it and I've allowed her the time
to grow and mature, as was suggested by everyone. She has a good mind
and I know she's going to excel, especially w/Gary. I do have a few
worries, though. She's not been away from her mother (my 12 year old
mare, Cass) except for a couple months to wean. She did have 2 QH
geldings in our small herd for a year but they've been gone now for a
while. She's not been in a trailer w/out her mother. The plan right
now is for me to stay behind w/momma to make sure she doesn't stress
too much seeing baby go. Baby Becca will have a lot to deal w/once at
Gary's but I trust him completely. I did make him read the Fjordhorse
Handbook :-)

My question - do any of you have single fjords and do they do ok?
Cass is very happy and comfortable where I lease a small barn on 6
acres. I have the option to move the nice gelding back w/her if
needed. Cass is very much an introvert and independent. What are your
thoughts on this new journey for my girls?

We have had a second case of confirmed rabies in a horse in our
 area in the
last 2 months. There was no documented history of vaccination in
 the horse

 people were
exposed and are receiving post-exposure prophylaxis which
 apparently costs
more than $2000 for people who are uninsured or whose insurance
 will not pay
for it. The health department in our county no longer provides it
 due to
budget cuts. If you purchase or somehow acquire a new horse, ask for
documentation of the horse's vaccinations. It is unwise to take
 someone's word
that the horse's vaccines are up-to-date as the owner of this horse
 did. It is
also prudent to keep new horses separated and minimize exposure to
 people and
other horses until you are sure that they are healthy and they have
 been
vaccinated. Keep your horses and yourself safe and vaccinate them
 for rabies
 annually.

Just a follow-up on the Busy Horse Bags. I purchased several of
 these for my
fjord gelding who would bolt his hay to the point of almost choking
 as well as
my warmblood who didn't need them that much but, what the heck.
 They have been
great. They are holding up very well and easy to maintain with just
 rinsing
out weekly. I was afraid the fjord would get frustrated and tear
 his up, but
no problem yet. He actually seems to enjoy the challenge of it. I
 would highly
 recommend them.

On another note, a horse in our local area was euthanized
last week and confirmed to have rabies. As you may or may not know,
 rabies is
fatal in humans and animals after clinical symptoms begin. There is no
effective treatment, only prophylactic vaccination after exposure,
 before
symptoms begin. The problem with rabies in horses is that at the
 beginning of
the illness or possibly through the whole illness, the diagnosis
 may not be
suspected and therefore anyone who comes in contact with the
 horse's saliva is
exposed. I don't know about your horse,s but it is difficult not to
 get
slobbered on on at least a daily basis with mine, which is how the
 virus is
spread. If you do not vaccinate your horse against rabies, you
 should. It is a
safe vaccine and much less expensive than having several family
 members
vaccinated with the 4 dose series if they are exposed, not to
 mention the risk
of death to your horse if it comes into contact with a rabid animal
 and is
unvaccinated and the risk of exposure to anyone who comes in
 contact with the
horse. Also, post-exposure prophylaxis vaccination used to be free
 at local
health departments, but due to budget cuts, many like ours are no
 longer
providing the vaccine and it is not an inexpensive series.

excellent relationship and he barely holds her hoof w/his fingertips
and she's completely relaxed for him. It is very interesting how
everyone who sees my two girls think they're so awesome but no one

gone thru 7 horses since I've known her trying to find the right
match. Cass I are both learning to ride together and I feel more
comfortable on her than any horse I've ever been on. The first time
up on her reminded me of being in gymnastics and learning the splits!
I am so glad I stumbled onto this incredible breed 4 years ago.

You feel that strength, that intelligence, that willpower and you

 Hello all

I was about to become the proud owner of a Fjord gelding and was in
the process of working on a purchase agreement with the breeder
when there was a tragic accident on her farm and the baby died.
I am absolutely emotionally crushed and heartbroken.

This baby was to be my replacement for my 32 yr old mare that
died back in February. She had been with me for 27 yrs. And I had
finally found the new love of my life in this baby.
I am just so sad. So very sad.

I live in Maryland and was wondering if there is anyone within a
900 mile radius that has a young Fjord (preferably under two yrs
old) gelding or colt for sale?

 Thank you

I’d done some research, just looking to see what supplements are
 out there
for cushings horses, to help boost immune system. Amber has been

 it cured
with the bio sponge and antibiotics, but does seem she isn’t
 feeling as
comfortable or “normal” as she use to. Could be the cold temps we’ve
gotten, lots of rain and having to stay in. She keeps an ucky eye.
I’d read some information that the outlook was not good for them, the
pergolide is a treatment, not a cure. She does seem to be a bit
 owey on her
feet, not so much that she’s laying down, and I’d felt a bit of
 heat in
them after the tummy issue, I expected to, but yesterday they were
 cooler.
Her teeth are not good so she has to be fed alfalfal, the leaves
 are the only
thing she can eat. She is pickier, I’m sure her tummy isn’t like
 it use
to be. Anyway, wondered what supplements, other than “vit. E”.
What is the outcome, for those that have had cushings horses. I
 mean, I know
its not good, but I just wondered. Never had one before.
 Thanks.

I think it is hard to find a good trainer particularly in certain
 areas. In
our area, there is no one that I let really ride my horses except a
 girl who
just exercises them for me at times. I do take lessons but then I
 am in
control of what happens and if I think it is something
 inappropriate, I just
won't do it. When I have them trained, I ship them 4 hours away to
 a trainer
in Ocala who understands that not all horses are the same and
 doesn't drill
them. She understands that not every horse responds to the same
 approach and
what works with one may not with another. I agree with what Beth

the stoic but sensitive nature of fjords which is something many
 trainers do
not understand. I would look for someone who is fair, even-

I appreciate the support. I’d worked
hard I thought, to find someone that
 worked with horses individually. I’d
not thought of mules and I don’t
think I’d have a mule trainer close to me
that does more than heavy harness.
I’d found a swedish dressage trainer, was
 told he was classical. Visited
with the barn owner for over a year and at
first she was very excited about
him. I also visited with a few of his
students who were happy with him. Went
to a show he was riding in and
coaching his students. Unbeknownst to me, he
is close to 70, and TALL.
Long legs. He was riding a pretty hot lusitano in
 warm up and handled him
great, never abusive. Then did his class and won. Is
 a students horse.
She rode the horse later and did well also.
I did talk to him about him riding
Ynde, and he thought it not be a problem,
but we’d also talked in length
about long lining, getting Ynde strong in
 her backend, and also balanced.
His students mentioned he’d hosted a clinic
in long lining at their barn.
Well, even though I’d visited with the barn owner before bringing
 Ynde, she
did not tell me they’d had a falling out. She and her trainer at
 her barn
do not speak unless it is necessary. Talk about DRAMA!
 But he is popular
with at least half of her boarders and until she finds the
 perfect one to
replace him, she just avoids him when he is there. Rides with
 her friends
 when he’s not. It’s a wonderful facility.
But he did push Ynde too fast,
too much too soon. I gave them no time limits,
in fact we wanted her there
through the winter as they have the nice indoor
 facility and wanting to still
sell my place, I felt this was good timing. We
would go visit once a week,
its 3hrs. away. The caretakers are good. The
owners way of riding is more
 along my idea of training.
I wish I had a coach around. Rural Texas is
hard. I’ve not any plans on
sending her off again and not being able to be
 there daily. The trainer ended
up not riding her, had one of his students
 ride her. He’d ride another
horse and work with others while supposedly
giving her a lesson with Ynde. He
tries to get as much done in as little
time as possible. I’m sure its
uncomfortable somewhat for him too, with
the friction between he and the
owner, but still, I was paying for four 45
minutes private lessons and it was
clear to me that was not what I was
 getting.
After showing up and finding her tail and backend slathered with
 poop, and her
anxious and stressed, this last Friday, we talked to the owner,
 they had a vet
come out and check on her, give her some meds, said no riding
 until it clears
up, which it did after 3 days. We brought her home the
 Monday. Now she is
still a little bit unsettled, confused, but ok. Maybe
 she’s worried she’s
just home for a vacation. But her poop is normal and
 cleared up.
I’d hoped I’d found the right place, the safe place. Do they
 even
 exist??

To clip, not to clip?

2011-09-15 Thread Kathleen Prince
This message is from: Kathleen Prince kathl...@pookiebros.com

Debating w/myself and a friend so wanted to ask the list. This will
be the 3rd winter w/my mare, Cass. Each season her coat has still
come in much thicker longer than all other horses, but less and
less each year for her. I'm assuming she's acclimating to our FL
weather. I've never body clipped her because she was terrified of the
clippers but we've worked on that this summer and she is now ok being
clipped. Much easier to do her mane than w/scissors! We will get
chilly weather and downright cold for some days/nights. Both my girls
LOVE when the temps drop. But our days are still rather warm in the
afternoons. She was dripping wet w/sweat today at noon. I hosed her
off, brought her in under her fan for a while and she was fine. She
does know and likes the fans and I'm keeping them on for now.

Question - is it better to clip her or let her be and just cool her
off as need be? BTW, her daughter (who was born here) does not get
the same coat as mom and was not half as sweaty today.

Ok, at the risk of becoming the most flamed person in Fjordie-land,
I am going to weigh in on the saddle issue. To fit a fjord properly
with any type of treed saddle, you need the right tree. I am sure
you understand how a tree works - it is the wood or plastic
skeleton that is designed to get your weight up and OFF your
horse's spine. It is supposed to make good contact with your
horse's back the entire length of the tree, while staying free of
the shoulder area, so that the shoulder can swing freely. Most
western saddles do not fit ANY horse except a very specific type of
quarter horse because they are all using the same tree, all made by
one company. It does not matter what you do with panels or gullets
or whatever if the tree does not fit.
There are only 2 companies in the US who still make their own
trees. Billy Cook and Big Horn. I own 2 wide tree Billy Cooks and
they are fabulous! I think that any one who saw my show saddle at
the MWFHC show has to agree - fabulous tack that fits like a glove.
I ride my BCs all the time, and I do not need a back cinch or a
breastcollar or a specific type of cinch. My saddle does not slip
because it FITS. If you need all kinds of rigging to keep your
saddle in place, it does not fit. It is that simple.
Think I am exaggerating? Let me tell you about my dumb-ass moment.
I cleaned my saddle, and took the cinch completely off to clean it
too. Re-attached it sort of half-assed on the off side (just enough
to keep it physically on the saddle), thinking I would get it done
properly at the barn. Got really busy and did not ride for a week
or 2. Forgot about the cinch not being adjusted properly. Tacked
up, jumped on, and did some ring work. We did serpentines and lots
of trotting in circles, etc. At the end of the ride, I jumped off,
and the saddle came off with me. The saddle did not slip around as
long as I stayed balanced, because it fits!
I can not speak to the issue of small manufacturers who custom make
a saddle for you. If you are going to pay that kind of money, make
sure you ask who made the tree. If it is a Steel (company, not
 material), save your money!
Here's the part that is going to get me hate mail. My trainer grew
up (literally) in a tack shop. Her mom is a fantastic tack fitter
and award winning saddle designer. In my trainer's opinion, there
were TWO saddles that fit properly at the recent fjord show. TWO!
Mine and one other. (No, I do not know who the other one is.)
Fjords are great at just sucking it up and carrying on. The fact
that your horse is not bucking does not mean your saddle fits.

That is so frightening. Has she used a psyllium product w/them to
routinely remove sand? A lot of the ones marketed for horses do not
work well, my vet I have tested them out in glasses of water, they
clump up not gel like supposed to. When mine were on a dry lot I
sanded them monthly. We've been on a grass pasture the past couple
years and I haven't been doing it but now I'm worried I should. I am
in FL so there is sand no matter where you are. So sorry for her loss.

I had a client who's been battling with sand colic for years. I
 actually said
when I started working for this person that she's gonna have horses
 with sand
in their guts. You see she has a paddock that she feeds in when the
 horses
come in at night, thus they ingest sand while cleaning up the
 little bits lost
from the feed pans. Sadly she thought she was doing a good thing
 filling her
paddock with sand so that it didn't get so mucky.

It is finally caught up with her and the horses and we lost one
 last night,
the necropsy reviled approximately 50 lbs. of sand in Bensons gut.
 Now she has
another horse out for training and is afraid to bring her home when
 the time
 comes.

The question is any ideas how to address the sand issue out side of
 completely
digging out the sand? It's been suggested to till in some clay to
 make it pack
down more and less likely to be eaten. I'm at a loss all I can
 think of right
now is dig the crap out keep the horses off it!

Phil, thank you for such an insightful post. I'm always worrying
about the balance of my two fjord girls, their happiness their
weight. There are only 3 fjords in our entire county and I have 2 of
them so they are pretty much viewed as some type of alien. When I was
in a boarding barn situation and my mare was pregnant I was
constantly battling people wanting to feed her more than what I
wanted her to eat. When nursing the baby she got too thin and taped
at around 825#. She's gotten up as high as 1115#. She's now
maintaining around 1000#. Regular horse people just don't seem to
be able to comprehend the different requirements. It was also very
tough having a growing baby, yet being very aware of her getting fat.
She turned 3 in May, is taller than momma and tapes around 900#. I'm
going to learn the Henneke Body Condition System!

I also see a lot of overweight obese dogs cats thru my pet
sitting business. One of the reasons we have had our dogs live into
their late teens is because they were kept lean their entire lives.
Bodies riddled w/arthritis at 16 17 years of age were still mobile
because they weren't fat. I only wish I had the same concern
discipline for my own body condition! :-)

Hello from Phillip odden in Northwestern Wisconsin where it is
 still pretty hot and steamy.

In Wisconsin grass grows high and deep. In Norway where all Fjord
Horses can be traced back to their genetic base, grass was very
limited especially before modern fertilizers became available. If a
Fjord was unable to make a living on the small amounts of dried
grass and weeds, sea weed, ash tree branches or even fish they
either died or that line of Fjords was not bred. Because of the
very limited amount of feed on the West Coast of Norway prior to
the 1950's or so, Fjords were bred to be thrifty eaters. One old
man in Norway told me that if a Fjord were turned out on good
pasture all summer and didn't get way too fat there was something
 wrong with the animal.

Dr. Don Henneke developed a Body Condition Score for horses to
determine if they are too thin, too fat or about right. This
concept is widely used by Veterinarians to understand where fat
accumulates in horses and how to judge the condition of your horse.
If your horse is too fat evidence suggests it contributes to colic,
decreased reproductive performance, development of orthopedic
diseases, lameness, and equine metabolic syndrome. I am quite sure
more Fjords die from over eating than being starved in a range of
 100/1.

This Body Conditioning System is a good tool to understand if your
Fjord is too fat. Since Fjords are supposed to be a horse with good
substance I feel that a Fjord can have a score of say 7 with the
range of healthy for most horses being from 5 to 7. Once I became
familiar with this system I alway use it to gage the body condition
of all my Fjords taking into consideration the season of the year,
how much hair they have, what season is coming up, their age, and
how hard I plan to work them. I like to have my Fjords a little fat
going into our cold long winters since all my Fjords are outside
all the time, say BCS 7-8. I expect them to loose weight during the
winter. This is how it was in Norway where they were bred. Spring
time BCS say 5-6. I keep my young stock a little thinner.

People cry about starting to ride a horse before the age of 3. Well
I don't ride mine until age 4. But allowing your young Fjords to
carry 100 to 200 pounds of overweight each and every step of their
lives is much the same as riding them 24/7. Certainly overweight in
young horses is not healthy and will limit their soundness in later
life. When Dr. Tor Finstad came to visit my farm a few years ago
for the NFHR 25th anniversary celebration ( wish we could have
another ), he complimented me on how trim and healthy my young
stock were at the time. Dr. Finstad is a Veterinarian and was at
that time the Chief Evaluator for Fjords in Norway. He was
concerned about overweight issues in Fjords in Norway now that
Norwegians are buying fertilizers and are able to afford high
quality feeds. Fjords are getting too fat in Norway too.

This is a complicated problem just as overweight is a very
complicated problem for many of us in our personal lives. And many
like to think of their horses as an extension of themselves. It has
to do with the times we live in with abundant inexpensive food. It
is much more difficult to feed a Fjord for a good healthy Body
Conditioning Score than to just feed it all

Question - do your fjords enjoy eating grass out of big rain puddles?
We've had big rain lately and our pastures have flooded places. I
always see my girls standing right in them grazing and when they look

Thank you! We are in FL so the pasture isn't that great but they are
on grass, mostly bahaia. They were out 24/7 w/cows for a year but
then we had boarders move in. They wanted them stalled at night and
it didn't work to have my girls out and the boys in. So, for the past
year they've been stalled at night. It's only been a couple weeks
we've been back to ourselves and them being able to be out all the
time. I feed coastal hay and they're getting a LOT less now they're
out on the grass all the time. When I've fed better hay in the past
(timothy/alfalfa) that's when we got in trouble. My mare would
especially get very pushy and act like she was starving all the time,
couldn't get enough of it. My vet also reprimanded me for her being
fat. They are roaming 6 acres and it seems to be working. I do know
they are in the sheds a good part of the time. I sure don't miss

My beloved, loyal and honest Sonja has gone from our lives.
 Yesterday,
Tuesday, April 19, I received a call at work that she was cast
 against the
barn and had injured her face. My non-horse DH had pulled her away
 from the
side of the barn and had her up. The vet beat me home, her right
 eye was
completely destroyed and the surgery to remove it was iffy, she was
 full of
painkillers and tranquilizers. She had caught on the one spot of
 tin siding
that was loose. Due to the damage internally the vet wasn't sure
 if they
could remove the righ eye without loss sight in the left. It would
 be a three
hour trip each way. I made the decision that sudden blindness in a
 20 year
old, strong willed horse would not be accepted easily. On the
 only sunny day
in a week (and it's storming again) she grazed new shoots of grass
 behind the
barn and I stood honour guard to a great friends passing. She is
 buried next
to the fenceline of her pasture and will live in our memories.

Her grandson Edgar had been sold in March to a home that will work
 him and she
was now my only fjord, with our little, ancient shetland as
 companion. Our
youngest child starts school this fall, I was finally shopping for
 a harness
so Sonja and I could enjoy her great training from Pat Wolfe. We
 will get a
mini for companion to the pony, the vet is helping us look for one.

Yes, I've heard of the many problems w/Another Chance 4 Horses. It's
really shameful when someone tries to pull on others heartstrings by
calling themselves a rescue when they do no vetting, no feet care, no
antibiotics for obviously ill horses. I'm just sick about these

She's very frustrated. Lots of head-slinging and stomping and
pawing if she doesn't get fed fast enough, doesn't get let out fast
enough, has to stand in the round pen / arena / hitching post for
more than 2 minutes... And her board DOUBLED because of the extra

The hay bag-net-thingy with the little holes is called a Nibble

your order, which I should have done first , as I ordered a huge
one the first time. It has withstood his voracious approach to food
well. Mine was about $36 I think, well worth the money, IMHO.

Willi is improving slowly. The hole in the sole is closing a little
slower than I had hoped for, but the hole inside his foot is doing
well. On Rood and Riddle's Facebook page, they show a horse with a

In my post regarding this ranch I did not mean to infer this is a
good place - it's not! It just happens to be where my mare came from
whom I rescued through a horse rescue group. Im just hoping they are
finally out of business for good. At one point they had 200 horses,

If a horse is unshod, Millers or Smith Bros Small Mesh Hay Nets

Hi Christie,
My mare came pregnant from one of the PMU ranches in Canada. Here's
the link to the ranch but I could never get them to ever answer me
back once I had my horse. Here's their link:
http://www.ourbluemoonranch.com/

I do know they've sold off a lot of their horses, we also purchased a
stallion last year and he's living at a sanctuary now, he's 20. This
breeder does use branding. You can go to this site to see pics of
previously adopted fjords and see what the brands look like. This
is the group that arranged all the adoptions. Once you click on the
site you need to click on Adoption Stories - 2008 was the year
several mares were listed. You have to click through to see pics.

I absolutely adore my mare! She has her own blog: http://

Kudos for getting your girl!

We are in Florida and my 2 fjords have access to a 5 acre pasture but
it's mostly coastal bahia grass w/weeds. Since my mare started
having allergies in the summer they started coming into the barn
during the night instead of having 24 hour access to the grass. I
feed coastal hay, (probably 2 flakes 2x day) especially since getting
reprimanded by my vet when I was feeding T A again for a bit. She
said my girls are overweight and do not need that alfalfa! My mare
(who's 11) only gets a supplemental feed called Equalizer at .5 lb 2x
a day. Her filly (who's 2) is getting Seminole Wellness Safe Lite
at 1 lb. 2x a day. Since our weather's finally turning a bit cooler

But if you gave Henry the EPM meds (Marquis?) and he experienced
 the die
off, then you did all you could. There really is not much else to
 do as
 far as I have heard.

I think the vets are very very frustrated by EPM - there is no
 conclusive
diagnosis, no conclusive symptoms (because the parasite can attack
different parts of the spinal cord/brain, giving a great variety of
symptoms and severity), no real good protocol to knock it out, and
 a host
of other frustrations. I am sure they wished very much it was
 something
they could treat and make better. At least they went ahead with the
 EPM
 meds.

The being stoic is an interesting trait. I know wild animal vets
 have a
difficult time because their patients are wired to not limp or
 malinger,
because then they look weak and become a meal. I took my mare on a
 4 hour
trail ride and she was not right. Not limping or anything noticeable
really, but she was not barging out in front where she usually
 wanted to
be. If I asked her to canter, she wouldn't. I called the vet the
 next day
and he said she was just stiff from the ride, but I had him come out
anyway, as she was not herself at the beginning of the ride. It did
 come
on rather suddenly, but she certainly did not take such a fast
 downturn
as your Henry. We went on for 5 months.

Henry was right to trust you. You were going on the only path that
 could
have lead to life. You did the right thing. It is just that
 sometimes you
do all you can and it still does not work out. Henry knew you loved
 him
and were doing all that you could. I digress also and I weep for my
 Blaze
 and your Henry.

Since reading your memorial post for Henry I've been at a loss at

endure tremendous suffering at his loss. My husband and I have always
turned to song in our despair and grief. When we find a special song
that brings that loved one to mind our heavy hearts begin to heal -
the songs say it so much better than we can. Our fjord, Cassidy, is
named after a singer who gave us one of our beloved remembrance
songs. (Eva Cassidy had the pure voice of an angel.) I hope the tears
that will come from listening to this song will be cleansing.

Thank you, Heather. I didn't really get much of a chance to grieve
when I went home to St. Louis for the services. I was in charge of
our Mom and that was an exhausting job and one where I had to stay
strong. Cass, my mare, has been getting my emotions at the barn
lately. She's a good listener.

I'm sorry for your loss, as well. I have followed your training
experiences w/Henry.

 Dear Kathleen

I was reading your blog and very sorry to hear the passing of your
 father. My
father passed away in December 2009 (also born in 1936).

 My heartfelt empathy,

 Heather

I am so very sorry. We have lost 3 of our dogs in the past 3 months
(varying, age related ailments) so I am still feeling lots of grief.
I understand how your heart aches. You made a loving decision for her
and time will make it not hurt so bad.

I had my beautiful mare , Katie, put down this morning. It seems
 that she
fell , tore all her tendons and ligaments in her elbow and ripped
 her radial
nerve. One problem was bad in itself but the combination of things
 couldn't
be fixeda sad sad heart wrenching day.

Never spoke to the ranchers. I let Animali handle the arrangements.
The two stallions are the last they are helping Blue Moon place and
that was only because they knew we were going to see they got bought.
We actually got both stallions. A lady in Miami did the major fund
raising for the other one, Fordie, he's 10 years. Marvin is 19. Now
that my obligation to my filly's sire is met, we are done w/Animali
and Blue Moon.

For those of you who remember my post from a few months back - we
were able to secure the funds through many horse-loving friends and
Marvin is now safe and secure at the sanctuary in Georgia. Marvin was
from Our Blue Moon in Alberta, Canada and has lots of babies out
there. He was threatened w/going to auction and that's why we stepped
 up.

Good job on your rescue. Did the folks from Blue Moon mention
 why they
were culling Marvin, and I believe their other Fjord stallion ?
 Sending them
to the canners is pretty poor form after all the foals they made
 for them to
sell over years and years. According to their webpage, they are still
breeding horses also. And dogs. Just makes ya wonder guess it
 keeps rescue
groups like the Animali Farm in PMU babies to market. Lisa
