I hope you are enjoying your summer (we are finally getting one) We have a 3 year old gray fjord gelding OFI Skogen that we are placing for sale.. We had bought him as a stallion prospect and changed our mind about owning a stallion from here on out. My kids are all growing up and some out of the area and I have some nice stallions to choose from in our driving distance. Skogen's Sire is the wonderful Flotren and his dam is the beautiful OH Sadie. Skogen was evaluated as young stock and received a blue in conformation.. He is a gorgeous guy and is smart and athletic too.. He is currently in training with Brianne Stromberg and doing amazingly well. We do very little cantering at age 3, but he is learning everything else.. He is already being ridden out on trail and is on a light rein and moving off our legs and side passing. He is learning much quicker than we anticipated. He has cantered enough to pick up both leads and be comfortable with it, but I have requested that we don't focus on that right now. (just my personal opinion, I wanted to be overcautious). He is light in his mouth (which is my favorite thing I like about Bri's training) We had full intention of moving much slower but he loves his job and is so balanced for his age. We don't work him hard of course at this age He is of average size and growing and filling out like a weed this year. 13.3-14.0H. He is developing some nice muscling. He is easy to handle and sweet as can be of course. I wanted to post him to the fjord list first. I will be working on a video in the next week or two and then listing him on Dreamhorse.. Saddle fit
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning List! Thought I had the right saddle for both my very drafty mare and I, but now I'm not sure. We went on a two day (very easy) trail ride and finally she got sweaty under the saddle. Dry along spine (good, right?) but also palm sized dry spots right behind shoulder blades (bad?) If I remember correctly, that indicates saddle is too tight there. We are in a full Q/H bars roping saddle. I have another saddle, also full Q/H roping but slightly wider. Am I on the right track? I was riding with a Professional Choice Air saddle pad. Kind of a cordura backing with black furry stuff next to skin, but thin. Maybe different pad? I tried an Aussie, both my Fjords HATE it (unfortunately, I like it a lot!) I've sat briefly in a treeless and that would be an option if my other saddle doesn't fix the problem. But if I can fix it with saddles on hand that would be awesome :-) She went well the entire weekend, really seemed to be enjoying herself. But these were shorter, easy rides compared to what we've got coming up so I want to make sure we get the fit right for her! Thanks in advance for all suggestions and advice!! Re: Established Fjord Horse show in the middle
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good evening. Please don't misunderstand my post about Oregon Gold. I am definitely NOT advocating the overthrow of either the Libby or Moses Lake venues!!! Way out of my league to even suggest it! Being relatively newly owned by Fjords (one of which LOVES to show) I am merely looking for additional avenues to be with fellow owners. We went to Libby and loved it. We tried to get to Moses Lake this year, but my daughter broke her ankle (after all the fees were paid of course! :-) ) so we didn't make it. However, because of school and distance to travel we will not be able to make both shows in one year and one Fjord show a year would be disappointing. Showing in open/schooling shows in our area will be fun, but it would just add something extra to be able to be with other Fjordies! I thought perhaps there was interest in the NW for some ADDITIONAL opportunities to show off our beloved friends, and wanted to mention Oregon Gold. Established Fjord Horse show in the middle
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning List. For my own showing purposes and scheduling, I contacted Kate Beardsley who is the President of the Oregon Gold Open Horse Show in Redmond Oregon. The show in the middle thread started and I mentioned it to her. I asked for something I could post to the list and she sent the following information. Sounds like an awesome opportunity for us in the NW! Hope to see you there. Very Respectfully, Kimberly Kate's Post: Hey Fjord lovers! I'd like to remind you all the 2008 Oregon Gold Open Horse Show featuring haflingers and fjords (as always!) is scheduled for May 10 11, 2008. Every year, our show board strives to offer a fun show that allows horse owners of all types to showcase their horses at all levels. We maintain a flexible class list to accommodate our competitors' preferences. We've developed a nice group of supporters and give many awards for a variety of reasons. We've got a full day of pleasure riding and usually include some specialty classes such as trail, dressage, pattern riding, and reining. And we've got a full day of driving which includes a cones course and we debuted Oregon's first Driving Darby in 2007. While our show board remains committed to keeping this an open show that focuses on haflingers and fjord, we are also open to offering classes to showcase other novelty breeds. While I personally want you all to consider coming to Oregon Gold because you believe you'll have fun there, I will tell you that if we do not see an improvement in fjord participation, we may need to consider cutting the fjord classes. This is not something we want to do, but offering a wide variety of fjord classes is expensive and we have not has enough participation to justify the expense. We are very open to feedback in all forms! If YOU have any ideas that would make Oregon Gold more attractive to you, please do let us know. We are open to brainstorming any new ideas. And, by the way, we encourage breed associations to have their quarterly, annual, or general meetings on site during Oregon Gold. If you have any questions about Oregon Gold, you are encouraged to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . You may also contact our show board secretary, Catherine Stout, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . More barrels
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks to the LIST for all the advice and stories, we enjoy reading all of them I had to giggle reading the barrel adventures... We'd been working with our 4 year old, trying to get her to lope. She really wasn't interested... Like her kindred brothers-in-barrels, she knows she can beat most other horses with her power trot, so why bother??? We took her to a local gaming show with some friends, very low-key. I thought we would just walk/trot the games as neither of us really knew what we were doing. This was just for fun, get her some exposure. Turns out, she REALLY likes barrels... go figure. Apparently, the QHs there either gave her some hints or teased her mercilessly, because after a couple different games she was loping for home. The other riders cheered her on and you should have seen her perk up even more! She walked calmly back to her place on the rail, switched her tail as if to say Told ya I could, and went back to near snoozedom... Back to lurkdom, Very Respectfully, Kimberly, Megan, and Quinde who now tries to rush through her warm up exercises to get to the barrels and poles... Who knew??? _ ___ Need a vacation? Re: trimming feet on young horses
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning List! I mentioned in a post that my foal was meeting the farrier for the first time this last weekend. I'm sorry for any confusion or concern. The farrier is coming today and she'll get her first trim. I'm betting that'll be exciting! The baby had just been to our equine vet Friday, and he told me it would be a great experience for her to meet my farrier as he was coming to do the adult horses. He said it wouldn't hurt to touch them with the file. That's why the word trim was in quotes. I didn't want people to think she was really going to get a full up adult trim. At two weeks old, she in no way needed a trim of any sort. I have become familiar with what the feet should look like and schedule my farrier accordingly. This is an orphan foal so will not grow up watching mamma get her feet done. I'll do lots of things to imitate mommy, but not that!! (VERY big grin!!!) I'm trying to simulate her being on natural pasture, I exercise her several times a day over different surface types: grass, soft dirt, packed dirt, lightly rocked over packed dirt, mud (it is Oregon springtime)... And actually, she just stood there like a pro. Seems it wasn't any different to her than the handling we'd been doing daily since birth. The fact that it was a stranger, or a man, meant nothing to her. Back to Lurkdom for me... Hope your weather is as perfect for you as ours is today!!! Stupid baby questions
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning List! Thanks for all the advice and encouragement with my orphan foal Hyndla. We have had a couple well baby checks now with our equine specialist and he is VERY pleased with her physical progress. She is 15 days old today. He seems especially pleased with her manners. She stands quietly for his exams and leads like a dream. I told him my trainer speaks horse and Momma mare and has been teaching me how to teach and discipline her. I was warned, and actually listened for once, about the dangers of letting her grow up spoiled. My stupid baby questions: 1) When do their eyes change from blue/bluish to brown? Hers are still blue. 2) She is a Brown dun. Is there any hint at this time of her future colouring? Can I tell if she will be a darker/lighter brown, or leg stripping? Is the stripping I think I see on her legs a figment of my imagination? 3) She has nice dark rings around her eyes. Are these rings indicative of what her future face colour may be? 4) When do babies usually get their first hair cut? If attending a Fjord show? The farrier is coming today and she'll get her first trim. I'm betting that'll be exciting! Thank you everyone again, your support was wonderful during this time!!! Re: Gravol
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Catherine, Thank you very much for the Gravol... Sabrina and I had our differences of opinion as all strong willed women will, but I loved her very much and was looking forward to a wonderful life with her. She was an awesome mother and passed on everything to her baby. There is a hole in my heart, but her baby is helping to fill it. The vet did recommend a nurse mare (or goat) but she was already drinking from a bucket the day she was born. I called around to see if anyone had a mare anyway, but no one did. And you are right, I did not want her to leave my care. I was warned about the potential :0) to spoil hand raised babies and their bad behavior and for once listened and obeyed. I borrowed two minis that love Fjord babies and they are with her until I can put her safely into pasture with the big horses. Meanwhile, I am feeding every two hours around the clock, trying to be a good step-mamma, giving loving discipline when required and the minis are teaching her herd manners. Our well-baby check is tomorrow morning. I expect everything will be great, but wanted a follow-up just to make sure. Thank-you so much for your care and advice! Kimberly and Megan - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: fjordhorse@angus.mystery.com Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2007 4:57:21 AM Subject: Gravol This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Kimberly Megan, Well, I finally have the heart to reply about the loss of the mare Los Trigos Sabrina. Everyone at Hestehaven had a Gravol (funeral ale) and reminisced about this very lovely mare that was in and out of our lives these past few years. It is a great shame to lose such a talented and wonderful mare. I am very surprised the vets did not recommend a nurse mare for the filly. There are several in your area, including here at our barn. But then you may have not wanted to have your filly live off your property. We wish you luck in raising the filly. It is very hard to bring them up with the respect for space with us humans. Draw your boundary lines and stick to them. Los Trigos Sabrina was a talent mare that was just starting her NFHR Evaluation tests. Before she left our barn, she received a blue in conformation and a red in beginning driving, even with the bit under her tongue for the second half of the driving test. She was very willing to learn and to please her handler. We had hoped for a long successful career with her new owners (Kim and Megan). We are so sad to have read the news here on this list. Happy and Sad Tidings
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning List! It is with blissful joyfulness that Megan and I announce the birth of an exquisite filly, (our first EVER baby) Hyndla (Blaamann x Los Trigos Sabrina). She was also born Apr 22 2006, and was pasture bred 23-26 Apr 2006. (CONGRATULATIONS Mike at CMF Farm!) Baby is AWESOME and seems to be doing well. Hyndla is a Norwegian name from the Lay of Hyndla. Hyndla was a voelva (a seeress) that Freyja visited to prove the pedigree of Ott so he could inherit. In some accounts on the internet they traveled to Valhalla together, in others Hyndla remained in her cave and just talked with Freyja. Apparently, the two weren't on the best of terms. Most of my very limited knowledge of Norwegian culture comes through the internet or the time I was stationed in Iceland so if I've got this wrong, someone PLEASE tell me? We are talking with the vet several times a day though about Hyndla, as it is with devastating sorrow that we also must announce the death of her mother, Los Trigos Sabrina. Sabrina developed a fever after Hyndla was born so the vet was called down for several hours Sunday and IV's and antibiotics were given. Blood work was drawn, palpitations done, placenta checked, baby was checked out, IgG bloodwork pulled. (Even at just 11 hours, the results were fantastic) She still had the fever Monday (But was lower than Sunday) so we took her back to the vet for follow up and foal check-up. No IV's, but more antibiotics. Check for migriating Strangyls (sp) or other parasites was clean. She was UTD on all vaccines and worming but thought we'd check anyway. Filly was in great shape. Sabrina's blood work showed decreased white blood cell count, lowered protein (I don't remember which specific one) and lowered calcium. We had discussed Sunday taking her to OSU (Vet school) and we were packed and ready to continue on but Monday Dr said it wasn't needed, she was progressing. She was remaining hydrated and the palpitations done Sunday and Monday didn't indicate any abnormalities. Placenta was passed in perfect condition. He said it looked like we were fighting a viral infection, so we'd support her in that and continue with oral antibiotics to fight possible secondary infections. Monday night no fever at all, Tuesday morning no fever at all. We had several conversations with the vet Monday evening and Tuesday morning tracking her progress. Sabrina was drinking, nursing, and eating lightly. Tuesday afternoon, she dropped in her stall. The vet says she probably passed a blood clot. We are absolutely heartbroken and she will be sorely missed. She is buried in a family place. We are handraising Hyndla on Foal-Lac following the instructions and vet advice. I have added some Karo syrup, (she likes it better that way) because I've been told it helps keep things moving. I have also added some yogurt with live culture, she prefers the vanilla flavor, thank you very much. Although a draft breed, I didn't double up like the instructions indicated I increased the number of feedings. The alarm is set for every 90 minutes just in case, but usually she lets me know that she is ready for food. I sleep in her stall at night and she wakes me up before my alarm. She was drinking water from a bucket the day she was born so we are using a grain bucket instead of a bottle. We take her up to the pasture 2 or 3 times a day to let her really run (her daily stall is 16 x 32) but the mares weren't as receptive as I'd have liked so even though advice was to get her introduced to a horse ASAP I don't leave her there. She meets them and talks under supervised conditions but comes back to her stall. Assuming all continues well with her, she has a follow-up well baby check Tues, 1 May. She is very well adjusted, full of energy and curious about everything (and how it might taste). Thank you for your patience with my long email. If you know of something different/additional we could or should be doing with Hyndla we would love to hear. We have a wonderful support network here, but information is a good thing! Rough weekend and discussions
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear List, I would like to humbly thank everyone that has responded both privately and publicly with support and advice. What a wonderful caring group of people to give all the help you have given to Catherine, Amy, and myself!!! I apologize for taking so long to say thanks, but I am just now getting back to the computer. My daughter and I both got sick after this weekend. After reading all the emails, I have learned much more. I had read the articles on colic, talked to owners, and thought I was prepared if it ever happened. I must admit, I wasn't ready for the reality. I panicked. I have realized again that it is much easier to keep a calm head when it is happening to someone else... I kept the emails, and have already started re-evaluating everything we do with sadder but wiser eyes. It breaks my heart that this new found wisdom comes at Tyr's expense. Re: Rough weekend at Hestehaven....
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear List, In response to Amy Ever's email on the rough weekend at Hestehaven... My heart goes out to Catherine. She has had what has to amount to the worst weekend ever. Our thoughts and prayers are with her. Having said that... I am the previous owner Amy refers to. The gelding was in the possesion of the buyers and was being cared for by them. When they called me for help, I immediately called two vets to get him to treatment, multiple friends for advice on what to do while we got him to the vet, they started getting their trailer ready, and we followed the advice of friends to get him moving and warm until the trailer was ready. Meanwhile, while doing all the calling while driving, I began the drive out to where the horse was. He was already loaded and they were moving prior to my arrival. I had called the local (45-60 minutes away) vet to prep them for his arrival and give them an ETA. I turned around and went to the vet with them. When we arrived at the vet he was connected to an IV, examined, tested and monitored for several hours and seemed to be making improvements (eating and moving and frolicking as was his nature). The vet sent us home with cautious but hopeful words. We had been warned at the beginning that if this treatment didn't work a trip to OSU would be required to save him and that could cost $10,000 to 15,000 dollars. The buyer's didn't have a stall so I offered to bring him back to my place. By the time I got him in his stall he was down again and having difficulty. I called Catherine to see if we could come up there so we would have better facilities and experienced people (the buyer and I would be with him round the clock). Catherine said Of Course. I started trying to find a trailer (at about 8 PM - My truck had hay on it as I was picking up hay when the buyer had called and hadn't had a chance to unload as I'd been at the vet all day) During that time, Catherine called back and said if he was that bad, it would be better to go to OSU. I was pretty sure from previous conversation that the buyer would be unable to do that based on the estimate, as much as they were truly heads over heals for this boy, but I would need to confirm that. As the registered owner, I was unable to do that also, as much as we really loved him. Yes, that is what credit cards can be for (if you have that high a credit limit and I don't) but I am also a single parent of a young child and must consider that as well. When Catherine said she'd take him to OSU if we weren't, we signed over ownership. The buyer is a family of 5 teenagers still at home, which is why we sold to them in the first place. They have pasture space at their place (I rent, a couple miles away) and their entire family adores and spends time with their horses, as do we. They only had 1 other horse, we have 3. As the situation developed, out of respect for and courtesy towards the breeder Catherine, we called her for additional advice, to let her know what was going on with one of her breedings and try to keep her in the decision making process. We (the buyer and myself) were trying to do the right thing. Please forgive my long email, but I wanted to let the list to know that there were no finallys about his treatment. We got him to our vet as soon as humanly possible and he received the best care available there. We were going to stay with him all night, walking, talking, whatever was required to keep his will up and him alive. When Catherine (who has so much more experience than us) said she did not think that was enough and he needed to go to OSU those decisions were made fast too. The trailer I had arranged to get us to Hestehaven was enroute, so I arranged with Catherine to meet her at the Interstate so she would not have to waste time trying to find my barn then either back-track to the highway or follow construction detours she is not familiar with. At that time, he was up and moving although we suspected it was just the meds he'd been given. That ended up being the case, he had a difficult trip to OSU. He was and is not considered disposable by any means. It was a heart wrenching decision not to be able to take him to OSU ourselves but we had our families to consider as well. If that is as Amy says refused to do so, not wanting the expense (or bother?) of trying to save this coltâs life then I am guilty. We did the best we could with the resources we have. We are heart-broken that we weren't able to take him to OSU ourselves, and will be FOREVER greatful to Catherine that she could. He is a wonderful gelding, so typical of the Fjord: personable, friendly, very very loving, with a great sense of humor. We are praying for his fast recovery, and praying for Catherine and Rune at the loss of Lydar. Thank you for your time and patience, Very Respectfully, Kimberly
Re: Rough weekend at Hestehaven....
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you, it is very difficult. I am just so grateful Catherine could step in! Amy mentions later in her email that they'd gotten home from OSU to find Lydar in his stall, passed. He was a MOST awesome 24 year old gelding, her first Fjord. It must have been devastating for Catherine. Our thoughts and prayers are with her. I honestly do not know what we would do if placed in those circumstances. We know there are limits to our recourses and priorities of people over animals but we always hope we will never have to exercise those priorities. I am glad you were able to fill us in on 'rest of the story'. It is always good to look at things from different point of view. We will gladly participate in the raffle if it will help. I was unable to find any list entry on what happened with Lydar. It sounds like a horse owner's worst nightmare all around. Makes me want to go out and hug my Fjords. You just never know what is coming in life around the next corner. We will pray for all involved, human and equine. Introduction, videos, and foal names
This message is from: Kimberly Kinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] Good morning! I've been reading the list for a couple months now, and I've decided to take the plunge and make my first intentional post to the list. I think I've accidentally posted looking for videos of Libby and Winona. I've just realized that and apologize. I'm fairly computer illiterate... My daughter Megan and I are proud to be owned by three Fjords: Quinde, Inga, and Sabrina. We live in Oregon, in the foothills of the Cascades. Our main goal with our girls is to hunt, pack, and camp. We've taken a few lessons in driving though, and we're hooked so will continue learning that too. We took two of our girls to Libby this year and had a great time, it was a HUGE learning curve for us. We are also looking at joining the Sheriff's Posse. They do community involvement, mounted crowd control and mounted Search and Rescue. Like kids in a candy store, we want to try it all . We are trying to take it one step at a time though, and any suggestions, tips, lessons learned, or advice would be most appreciated!! I was wondering if any videos are still available of Libby and Winona? Finally, our mare Sabrina is having our first foal in 2007. I've been googling the internet like crazy trying to find a source for names and not having much luck. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to find names? (Thanks Mike, for the sites you sent!!!) Thanks for your patience, and it's wonderful meeting you all!!!
