I am no longer the owner, as I was until a year ago, but I can tell you
Camptown Harness is your best buy both in terms of quality and price.
Camptown has made way more harnesses for Fjord horses than anyone else, I
can attest. Marjean has made some nice improvements which put the harness
in a class by itself. Nuff said.

I have both leather and Zilco single harnesses.  I love them both.  I use
the Zilco late spring-early fall, and especially love it when coming in
all sweaty or muddy, I unhitch, then hose off the horse and Zilco harness
together.  5 minutes to a happy horse and a cleanish harness.  When
it's showtime I dunk the harness in a bucket of sudsy water, then use a
scrub brush on the harness and in very few minutes it's beautiful.  No
judge has ever mentioned that my show harness is not leather.  I show in
Open Pleasure Driving at local open shows and county fairs, and have
actually had a judge once take the microphone go over my harness and
hitch as an example of what he likes to see!

The downside to Zilco is that it's VERY stiff in the northern Minnesota
winter, to the point of being impossible to use.  So I use my lovely
Samson harness late fall-early spring.  I love my Samson harnesses!
Cleaning that harness is therapy...I love the smell and feel of good
harness leather.  It's lovely to spend a couple hours in the barn on a
rainy spring morning cleaning harness.  So both types have their
permanent place in my heart and in my barn.

Ellen...I purchased a Smuckers biothane pairs harness ... A long time
driving instructor helped me get them fitted to my fjords. As he untangled
and adjusted the pieces he remarked several times about the quality. He
thought it was very good/using high quality materials and fittings.

Just a few words of advice; something to think about. In my experience,
having grown up in saddle/harness repair shops, I have found that synthetic
harnesses need to be cleaned just as often and as thoroughly as leather. Sweat
and
dirt stick to it just as bad, and it will definitely take more than just a
squirt of a hose to remove. Excess water left on synthetic harness can cause
just as much damage to stitching as on leather harness. About the only real
difference in care is oiling of leather, which only needs to be done maybe
once
a year if you properly care for the harness. Don't make the mistake of
thinking Synthetic means care (work) free...

Respectfully,

Ellen:
We purchased a set of harnesses from Camptown Harness last year. Marjean
was very good to work with. She gave us information about exact
measurements for the horses that she needed. Gave us a lot of good hints as
to what works and what does not. We received the harnesses after OE had his
accident so we sent them to Cedar City to have Jeff Pedersen fit them on his
horses. Good thing as there were a couple of problems. Camptown has a
policy of 60 days return with no charge. We were able to fit them to our
team when we went to the driving weekend at Jeff and Lisa's this spring.
They look great on the team and fit perfect.

We like the lighter harness as the other team harness that we have is a farm
harness with neck collars and hames. It is very heavy and harder to put on
the horses for OE and his bad shoulders. We haven't had or used them long
enough to comment on Amy's email about cleaning.

Fjord Biothane Draft Harness For Sale

2001-05-14 Thread Michele Bigelow
This message is from: Michele Bigelow [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a Fjord Draft Harness, complete with adjustable collar and pad
for sale. It is made of biothane, and real easy to clean! It is the
medium decorated style (we had a choice of plain, medium and very
fancy). Used maybe half a dozen or so times. Sold the mare, and the
girl is not interested in purchasing the harness. $800 or b.o.

For Sale: Biothane headstall and bit attachment custom
made to fit a Fjord (35 circumference poll to throatlatch,
26 noseband). Navy blue with green trim, this is a
great bridle for trail riding as the headstall is a halter and
the bit can be easily removed for grazing. All brass fittings,
the biothane material has a 1000 lb. break strength.

Used once! (I purchased this bridle for the Fjord in the
local therapeutic riding program. However, the instructors
prefer traditional leather.) I paid $75 and will sell for $50.
The bridle (without reins) can be viewed at this website
where I purchased it.

listers,
i have replaced all my leather odds and ends with biothane throughout.
the halter/bridle combos i had specially made and fit each of my horses,
perfectly. the stuff wears like iron, stays soft and is super easy to
clean and keeps looking new. the main straps are black and then i had
the lady apply a colored thinner overlay. that way i can quickly grab
each horse's halter and bridle. you can use them separately or in the
combo mode for trail riding. with my new saddle they sent me two breast
peices. these are made out a the newer biothane that looks and feels
more like leather. same great qualitites. i would never go back to
leather. too much up keep! denise in northern calif.

Dear Lisa,
I am very interested in pairs harness. I have two 15.1 hand
Fjord, a gelding and a mare, which I am planning to make into
a pair. My husband will probably have apoplexy at the idea of
my buying more tack, but he does like a bargain and it sounds
like a bargain, except you don't say what the asking price is,
only what you paid for it. The only biothane harness I have looked
at was old, stiff, and the wrong size. This sounds better, but I
wonder if I should hold out for leather, as you did. I would like to
see it. One time I bought a saddle that way: a woman shipped it
to me to try and trusted me to either buy or return in good condition.
Please E-mail me about terms and conditions of sale and maybe
we can work something out.

Re: Rain ! BIOTHANE PAIRS HARNESS for sale

1999-04-06 Thread Pedfjords
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello List from cold and rainy So. Calif. There.are you all happy
now? LOL
Fjords are loving the rain, a treat from all that boring sunshine day in and
day out. ( Hee hee, couldnt resist )

I am leaving for the Redmond Or. Small Farmers Journal Auction next week,
wondered how many Fjord List folks would be there, outbidding me on Draft
Pony stuff ! We will be staying at a local campground with our trailer, so
please let me know and come over for coffee !

I plan on consigning a harness there, as the National Halflinger meeting
is being held there ( can anyone confirm this, I have only heard it ) I
thought I would offer it here at low reserve for Fjord folks. I already sold
my single light harness, and ended up selling its mate, to some good list
folks, Thanks Teressa, and Mark !

The Harness is a PAIRS Harness, custom made for a pair of Halflingers. Its
Biothane over good leather. I LOVE the Bio. Harness's as they are very
sturdy, and super easy to clean. ( Hose down with water, and it looks like
patent leather ! ) This is an especially nice harness, as its put over rather
heavy leather, not at all flimsy. Collar type, no collars. Metal black
painted Haymes, with stainless ball tops. No spots, 2 strap britchen. Harness
is complete with lines ( very nice Biothane ) and headstalls, with 5 and 1/2
inch snaffle bits. Stainless fittings, buckles, and Stainless Chains. Very
pretty. Used by us maybe 8 times, while we waited for our Smuckers Harness to
be delivered. works well for plowing, pulling, pleasure driving. parading,
ect. I would show in every class but turnout in it. This Harness fits my
Large Fjords, but has alot of ajustment down, to fit Cobb Sz. 14 hand or 800
Lb. horse, to 1100 Lb. horse, fits. ( Kaiser is 1100 Lbs. and it is ajusted
to max out !

This Harness was ordered by a man, who only paid for the Halflinger and
left someone stuck with this custom made harness. They consigned it at the
Turlock Draft Horse sale and auction, where most of the folks there were
looking for Draft sz. items. We bought it for 825.00, about 1/2 of what it
cost him. Our luck !

We have no need for 2 Pairs Harness now that our Smuckers has arrived, so
will be consigning this one up in Redmond next week.

If anyone here is interested in it, please contact me before we leave !
Thanks, Lisa

Cathy,

A while back Nancy Hotovy wrote about her bioplastic harness she uses on her
fjords. I contacted her and she gave me the name of this guy who made this
for her. He is in Indiana. Over the phone, I gave this guy my filly's
measurements, along with a friends grown gelding's measurements and he made
me the most beautiful buggy harness! He was totally cool. He really knows
his stuff. The cost savings was great. I had priced the same type of
harness (in leather) at a local tack shop. It was a Smuckers harness and
the total was going to be about $1,200 (new). This harness was about 1/3
that cost! I would highly recommend this guy to anyone who is interested in
having a new harness made. (He also does leather, etc.) He is very easy to
work with and really knows his stuff!
