RE: [flexcoders] SOAP WebService faultString problem

H Pete,

I'm not using the proxy, just a PHP5 SOAP server on an Apache2 server and

 Are you using the proxy? I think we changed for Beta 2 to return the
 entire status line from the HTTP error (as it's likely you're running
 into a 404)... But please submit a test case (or at the very least email
 me your file) if you want us to check your particular situation.

 Thanks,

 Hi,

 [Flex 2.0 Beta 1]

 I'm not getting the faultString when a fault occurs in my SOAP
 WebService:

 fault=Alert.show(event.fault.faultstring, 'SOAP Fault');

 shows only 'HTTP Request Error'.

 I found some info about this with google that states that this doesn't
 work with most browsers, but it should (only) work with Internet
 Explorer. I've tried with Internet Explorer 6, FireFox 1.5 and Opera
 8.5. None works. What am I doing wrong? I'm testing with PHP5.1 on an
 Apache 2.0 using a WSDL based soap server.

 B.T.W. in Opera you sometimes have to refresh the page to get your Flex
 application to run. Is this a known problem?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Bruce Eckels on Flex 2

2006-03-06 Thread Abdul Qabiz

Yeah, it's between 10 to 13 mins. I have writtent the transcription of the part of interview which talks about Flex/Flash/FlexBuilder/ActionScript. I am not very good in language and not good at understanding foreign accents, I would have surely made some mistakes... But i hope, its fine as long as you guys don't mind it :)
only a part of interviewBruce Eckel: On the the other hand, I have been experimenting with Flash, this Flex 2, that is still in Beta right now. But I have been developing with it and for Graphical User Interface stuff, boy, and also Rich client stuff. I think, that is, may be, gonna be the thing that takes over from applets, AJAX and everything because Flash, you know, such a nice experience for people. That's what I have been looking at. And, you know, it runs across the platform without you having to worry about. You know, when you dealing with _javascript_, and the reason I abandoned the language was because I just don't wanna have to say, what browser might working under, what platform might running on, whatever it is, and then write my code differently for each case. That's just ludicrous? I don't wanna spend my time that ways. So, one of the cool things about Flex, you can write, I mean it's got classes and all the stuff and components and everything. The new Flex 2, you can actually, they built, this was very clever they built on top of Eclipse, so their tool is built on top of Eclipse and for the graphical-user-interfaces you can actually do the dragging-dropping of the flash components and then write the program underneath. I have been pretty happy with..And I think, by the time they actually release it they will have improved it even more..
Interviewer: Excellent, Excellent, Flash is pretty incredible, just platform in general, its like the mega applet..with distribution (???)Bruce Eckel: Exactly.Interviewer: Are there any other dynamic languages that catch your eye right now, if so why?
In answer to this question, he mentioned that he is learning ActionScript 3 and MXML apart from other languages.On 3/6/06, Matt Chotin

[flexcoders] FB2 :: Horizontal scroll bug, opening file

2006-03-06 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hello,

Just curious if this bug is being remedied.

Type text farther than the horizontal width of the code pane. Then try
and edit text at the very end of the line with the scroll bar at max
position.

Then right after you type something, the horizontal scrollbar gets set back to 0.

Also,

With the link/class view thing; Seems like this happens way to
fast. I use ctrl-c and ctrl-v all the time, when doing this combination
fast, I end up opening a copy of the file when hitting ctrl-v fast. 1
out of ten times I have to close the copy and say no on the save
changes.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Peace, Mike-- What goes up, does come down.

AW: [flexcoders] DataGridColumn sortCompareFunction (Flex 2 Beta 1)

there any public information about the date you are publishing B2?

Yes, the docs are wrong
on b1 on the signature. If you provided a custom comparator in b1 it may
be that you need to know whether you wanted ascending or descending though I
thought we were handing it correctly. Im pretty sure it behaves
correctly in b2 though.

Subject: [flexcoders]
DataGridColumn sortCompareFunction (Flex 2 Beta 1)

Hello,

I do have some problemens with a custom sort compare
function in a DataGrid. In the Columnn I like to sort birthdates of persons.
Regarding the manunal the callback function should have the following signature

mySortCompareFunction(obj1 :
Object, obj2
: Object, columnIndex
: Number) : Number

With this signature I get the following error message

ArgumentError: Error
#1063: Argument count mismatch on CellRenderer::DateCellRenderer/Compare().
Expected 3, got 2

at mx.collections::Sort/mx.collections:Sort::internalCompare()

at Array/sort()

[]

So I tried the following function with only two
arguments:

var _ColumnName:String = birthDate;

public function Compare(pRow1:Object,
pRow2:Object):Number {

var _T1:Number;

var _T2:Number;

if( pRow1[_ColumnName] == null ) {

if( pRow2[_ColumnName] == null )

return 0;

else

return -1;

}

else _T1 = pRow1[_ColumnName].time;

if( pRow2[_ColumnName] == null )

return 1;

else {

_T2 = pRow2[_ColumnName].time;

if( _T1  _T2 ) return -1;

if( _T1  _T2 ) return 1;

return 0;

}

}

This works fine with one exception; the rows are
always sorted ascend, even when the sort arrow indicates that the
rows should be sorted descant.

Where is my mistake?

Harry

[flexcoders] place object on stage from class

2006-03-06 Thread witchythewanderer
How can I place a canvas or other object on the stage from a class?
I've tried the following

public class Window extends Sprite {

   private var c:Canvas;
   public function Window() {
c = new Canvas();
c.setStyle(borderStyle, solid);
c.setStyle(borderColor, #FFABC4);
c.width = 100;
c.height = 100;
var s:Stage = new Stage();
s.addChild(c);

   }

}

Well, that doesn't work, but I'm somewhat lost at where to look next.
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Sonja Duijvesteijn

ps. if this message was sent twice my apologies, i'm having some
trouble with my mail.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flex and URL variables

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Horn
If you are using a static HTML page to serve up the SWF file, then you
need to manually specify the params as flashVars variables in the
wrapper. For example, to pass the name Nick Danger you might do this:

object classid='clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-44455354'
codebase='http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflas
h.cab#version=9,0,0,0' width='500' height='500'
param name='flashVars' value='firstname=Nicklastname=Danger'
param name='src' value='FlashVarsValues.mxml.swf'
embed
pluginspage='http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer' width='500'
height='500'
flashVars='firstname=Nicklastname=Danger'
src='FlashVarsValues.mxml.swf'/
/object

If you are using something like JSP to serve up the SWF file, then you
can use expressions to set the values of the flashVars in the wrapper:

%
String fName = (String) request.getParameter(firstname);
String lName = (String) request.getParameter(lastname);
%
...
object classid='clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-44455354'
codebase='http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflas
h.cab#version=9,0,0,0' width='500' height='500'
param name='flashVars' value='firstname=%= fName
%lastname=%= lName %'
param name='src' value='FlashVarsValues.mxml.swf'
embed
pluginspage='http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer' width='500'
height='500'
flashVars='firstname=%= fName %lastname=%= lName %'
src='FlashVarsValues.mxml.swf'/
/object

If you have the FDS server, then query string params are converted to
flashVars for you.

  Alright, I've done this with Flash before but I'm wondering how
  similar it is.

  Let's say I start my app @ http://mysite.com/index.mxml?number=3

  What's the easiest way to get that 3 into a variable in Flex? Using
  FlashVars in the embed/object tags and then somehow do
  mx.core.application.Application.number as my variable?

[flexcoders] Flex application architecture for data validation

2006-03-06 Thread gault17
We are trying to come up with a strategy for data validation in our
Flex application. Our current approach is to perform basic data
validation (valid values for each field) on the client side and invoke
server-side objects to perform more thorough validation such as
relational edits(e.g. if field x 100, field y must have value AA).
However, I'm wondering whether an approach that favors more client-side
validation would be better. Something like validate on the client side
as long as no call to the server is required to retrieve additional
data or access external services. The answer, I imagine, is it
depends. But I'd be interested to know what factors to consider and
what guidelines others are using for their Flex data capture
applications. Thanks

RE: [flexcoders] Flex 2 socket interface

2006-03-06 Thread Theodore E Patrick
Marc,

The local server model is great but there are some troublesome aspects that
can bit you:

You need to serve a crossdomain.xml file over HTTP from the local server.
This will allow a web based application to interoperate with a desktop based
server. This is essential to get this to work. Basically this forces you to
support both HTTP and XMLSocket/Socket in parallel.

Other than getting the server installed you will be good to go. With a local
server installed, it is quite easy to add fileIO and other features. In
IFBIN we use a local server to run the service itself. Currently it runs a
mixed HTTP/XMLSocket server locally providing secure authenticated file
installation/configuration, IFBIN Service is just DRM lite. We wanted to
provide our subscribers with 1 click file installation and this solution
worked out very well.

Marc, please contact me offlist and I will set you up with some examples of
how to make this work.

Cheers,

Note to moderator: this is an update of a previous message that for some
reason did not get sent to the group.

Hi
I have a console based, desktop network management app written in
Java. I'd like to build Flex 2 browser-based GUI for this desktop app
but I don't want to use Enterprise Services (or any commercial
middleware layer) to communicate with this app (due to deployment license)

I have noticed that the IFBIN service (ifbin.com) uses a class called SYNC
to
communicate via socket to a local Python based server, which would be ideal
in my case.
I can port my Java app to Python.

Does anyone have any examples of SYNC in use with Flash or Flex?

thanks

In answer to this question, he mentioned that he is learning ActionScript 3 and MXML apart from other languages.

[flexcoders]Question about the Loader class

2006-03-06 Thread Richard Schutten
Does someone has a answer for my question,

I've a question about the Loader class in Flex 2. I've created a simple
project that adds an Image object to a VBox when a button has been clicked.
I load the Image with the content of the Loader. I also connected a
ProgressBar which shows the progress of bytes loaded. The first time i run
the project it works fine. The progressbar is updating when receiving the
bytes. The second time i run this project the progressbar is not updating
because the image has already been cached by internet explorer. But loading
the image takes the same time as when i run my project for the first time.

So here's my question:

Does the Loader class always downloads the image from the given url, even
when the file is cached?
Because when i just type in the url in ie the image is directly loaded.

Thanx

Richard

[flexcoders] Question about error 'Can not resolve a multiname reference...'

2006-03-06 Thread Richard Schutten
Hi there,

Why do i get the following error on building the project?

Can not resolve a multiname reference unambiguously. flash.display:Loader
(...\framework.swc(mx/controls/Loader)) are available.

For example: I've used:

import mx.controls.Loader;

var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();

When i prepend mx.controls. for each Loader the problem is solved. But i
thought that when using import mx.controls.Loader i could directly call
Loader. Is that correct?

Hi Carson,

We are working on getting instructions

Applying the hotfix patch works for the generated

Did you restart your flex server instance
after applying the patch?

I assume so b/c it had to be stopped to
apply the patch.

Heres the checklist of the files
and settings just to confirm:

 Create a /WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes directory.
 Copy flex15_hf129366.jar from the temp directory
 to the hotfixes directory.
 Copy flex-bootstrap.jar to /WEB-INF/lib,
 overwriting the previous version.
 Copy commons-codec.jar and commons-httpclient.jar
 to WEB-INF/flex/jars.
 Update the flex.class.path in /WEB-INF/web.xml as
 follows
 context-param
 param-nameflex.class.path/param-name

 param-value/WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes,/WEB-INF/flex/jars/param-value
 /context-param

Let me know if you still get prompted and
we can figure out whats going on.

Re: [flexcoders] Question about error 'Can not resolve a multiname reference...'

2006-03-06 Thread Abdul Qabiz

thought that when using import mx.controls.Loader i could directly callLoader. Is that correct?Right, but there is one Loader class in Flash Player API also, not sure if that is the reason you are getting that error...
If that is the case, you have to explictly use it with fully-qualified namevar loader:Loader = new mx.controls.Loader();If that is the problem then compiler should be little more smart to understand things and make it easier for developers

Re: [flexcoders] Flex application architecture for data validation

2006-03-06 Thread Abdul Qabiz

I think, validations which has sensitive information, should not be done on client side. For example, any business logic that reveals some sensitive algorithm, don't do it on clientYou can do normal data validations, like numbers, date, email, credit card number validations(to validate if user has entered correct pattern for a VISA card but don't connect to gateway API from client directly, rather do it through a server-side script on your server), etc.
I mean things which you see are done on client, can be done..But not sensitive things...-abdulOn 3/6/06, gault17

  private function onAppInit():void  {   c = new Window();  }  /mx:Script/mx:Application##Window.as##package {
 import mx.core.UIComponent; import mx.core.Application; import mx.containers.Canvas; public class Window extends UIComponent { private var c:Canvas; public function Window()
  {   super();   c = new Canvas();   c.setStyle(borderStyle, solid);   c.setStyle(borderColor, #FFABC4);
   c.width = 100; c.height = 100; //Since there could be only one Stage in per application in Flex 2.0, // so adding to Application instance is fine.
Application.application.addChild(c);  } }}You can also look at mx.managers.SystemManager it manages application window.-abdulOn 3/6/06,

eval was gone long back, I mean it was there but most of people stopped using, at least I did after Flash 5 was released. I could use [] or dot (.) to reference things...Much cleaner approach, though eval was little faster...But code clarity matters.

I have a question that's
almost related.

In AS3, how can I instantiate a class, com.foo.MyClass, using the string
com.foo.MyClass? The reason I ask is that I'd like to load an
XML file and use it to dynamically create components at runtime.
Something like this:

components
 component className=com.foo.MyClass x=100
y=100/
 component className=com.foo.MyClass x=100
y=100/
/components

Thanks,

So what are you really trying to do? Are you using Flex or
just pure AS3? Where are you getting a string like
sprite1.sprite2.sprite3 from? Why do you have to transform it back
into a Sprite reference? Could you have just kept the reference instead of the

Hi all,

With the _eval being gone in AS3, does anyone know how to get to the reference
of a movieclip (via the target name string) without using _eval (e.g.
_level0.mc1.mc2.mc3) ? I know we can instantiate an object
from a class name string via the _global namespace but not positive about mc's.

Thanks.

I have definitely restarted Tomcat since applying the

Hi
Carson,

We are working on
getting instructions published for how to manually create an html wrapper to
workaround this issue, details on the way. The generated external file
looks exactly like what you posted, good sniffing that .js code works in my
environment.

Applying the hotfix
patch works for the generated wrappers with .mxml requests.
I just applied the path
and now dont get the IE activation prompt for .mxml requests

You know your stuff -
Ive seen you postings, so dont take this the wrong way

Did you restart your
flex server instance after applying the patch?
I assume so b/c it had
to be stopped to apply the patch.

Heres the checklist of
the files and settings just to confirm:

  Create a /WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes
  directory.
  Copy flex15_hf129366.jar from the temp directory to
  the hotfixes directory.
  Copy flex-bootstrap.jar to /WEB-INF/lib, overwriting
  the previous version.
  Copy commons-codec.jar and commons-httpclient.jar to
  WEB-INF/flex/jars.
  Update the flex.class.path in /WEB-INF/web.xml as
  followscontext-paramparam-nameflex.class.path/param-name
  param-value/WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes,/WEB-INF/flex/jars/param-value/context-param

Let me know if you
still get prompted and we can figure out whats going on.

Re: [flexcoders] getStyle and Alpha for programmatic skins

2006-03-06 Thread Jono Spiro

The issue is still that I cannot get access to the actual value of `alpha' in a programmatic skin.

The only reason that this is almost a moot point is that if you change the alpha property on the parent object, it applies an alpha channel to all the skins and contents of the object anyways -- so using alpha in the skin would be redundant. The real question is: If you provide a skin, should you be able to override (and even completely ignore) the alpha blending on the component, at least just for the parts drawn by that skin (
e.g., lets say you wanted to have a selective alpha applied).

Jono

On 3/6/06, Matt Chotin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Yes alpha is a property that runs from 0 to 1. All of the other alpha's (backgroundAlpha for example) are done as styles with the same 0 to 1 range.

As for creating skins with arguments in the constructor, we really don't support it, it has to be no-arg. We don't have a general mechanism of knowing the constructor arguments and using them in a factory…

Hello,Your aware that alpha values in AS3 are from 0 to 1 ?When you say;
 Regardless of the value, it seems that if you set the alpha of a VBox, it applies it
to the skin anyway, whether you want to override the behavior or not.When you set the alpha of any instance it effects the instance of itself and it's children which in this case would be the borderSkin instance.
I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to set the alpha of a DisplayObject which RectBorder is.As far as using getStyle() with an actuall property, I think Adobe changed the implementation of getStyle() (Adobe can comment on this [ can you get non-defined style properties with getStyle() ?? ] ). I think it is more strict now.
:: this.alphaIt would return 1 if the skin is fully opaque. IE alpha = 100%
Anyway, I don't understand the problem really ;-) I know why I am writting this becasue I didn't relaize that the values of alpha had changed in as3.Peace, Mike

Proposal 1) When I need the value: getStyle(alpha) -- this alwaysreturns 0. Or just saying `this.alpha' always returns 1. Regardless of
the value, it seems that if you set the alpha of a VBox, it applies itto the skin anyway, whether you want to override the behavior or not.
Ugh.Proposal 2) More generally, what if I want to instantiate my skinsubclass with a constructor -- not just the default constructor, but
including values like alpha and keeping them privately? Skins mustprovide default constructors, otherwise they don't compile -- is there
a way to provide constructor arguments to a skin, and then use it? Itried instantiating a skin like this, and passing the instance to
borderSkin, but it didn't do anything. (dataBinding would be an idealsolution, so the skin gets redrawn).

[flexcoders] DateTimeAxis for use in a scheduler.

2006-03-06 Thread nulloperator
Hello all. I am currently testing the Flex 2.0 platform and am using
it for a smester project at my college. I am currently developing a
scheduling application in which an individuals schedule will be
visualized via a stacked BarChart which will contain the hour on the
xaxis and the individuals name on the y-axis. The bars must then
represent a meeting and the width will represent the length of that
meeting. I have written flash actionscript classes to draw a gantt
chart similar to what I am doing here but I would really like to be
able to accomplish this via the charting components provided by Flex.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

RE: [flexcoders] graphics.lineTo and anti-aliasing

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin
The answer from the Player folks is that you can globally downgrade the
quality of the movie which will start disabling antialiasing across the
board, but you can't control it for an individual component.

So at the moment the answer is no. Can you describe what you're trying
to draw in more detail so I can forward it on as a use-case for the
future?

Does anyone know of a way to turn off anti-aliasing of graphically
drawn things -- lines, circles, etc.? (in particular, when drawn at
angles)

I tried messing with the parameters to lineTo so it wouldn't scale,
round, or draw more than a hairline*, but I still cannot solid color,
aliased pixels due to antialiasing.
* graphics.lineStyle(0, fgColor, alpha, false, LineScaleMode.NONE,

One solution is to work backwards and do a loop over every pixel and
decide whether to color it, but that's ridiculous...

Carson and I got this resolved. The
problem was a non-default IE setting.

Please note that this most likely doesnt

If you have Disable Script Debugging

still be prompted by IE to load the activeX plugin.

Hi Carson,

We are working on getting instructions
published for how to manually create an html wrapper to workaround this issue,
details on the way. The generated external file looks exactly like what
you posted, good sniffing that .js code works in my environment.

Applying the hotfix patch works for the
generated wrappers with .mxml requests.

I just applied the path and now
dont get the IE activation prompt for .mxml requests

You know your stuff - Ive seen you
postings, so dont take this the wrong way

Did you restart your flex server instance
after applying the patch?

I assume so b/c it had to be stopped to
apply the patch.

Heres the checklist of the files
and settings just to confirm:

 Create a /WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes directory.
 Copy flex15_hf129366.jar from the temp directory
 to the hotfixes directory.
 Copy flex-bootstrap.jar to /WEB-INF/lib,
 overwriting the previous version.
 Copy commons-codec.jar and commons-httpclient.jar
 to WEB-INF/flex/jars.
 Update the flex.class.path in /WEB-INF/web.xml as
 follows
 context-param
 param-nameflex.class.path/param-name

 param-value/WEB-INF/flex/hotfixes,/WEB-INF/flex/jars/param-value
 /context-param

Let me know if you still get prompted and
we can figure out whats going on.

the fact that method signatures are not polymorphic when implementing

RE: [flexcoders] getStyle and Alpha for programmatic skins

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin

So the question of can you get a skin to
ignore the parents alpha, the answer is no. The parent will apply it along
with your skins alphas no matter what. Now I suppose you could override the
getter/setter of alpha on your component and propagate to the skins and just
dont call super, you could even set another well-known variable that your
skins could read and make their own adjustments.

The issue is still that I cannot get access to the actual value of
`alpha' in a programmatic skin.

The only reason that this is almost a moot point is that if you change
the alpha property on the parent object, it applies an alpha channel to all the
skins and contents of the object anyways -- so using alpha in the skin would be
redundant. The real question is: If you provide a skin, should you be able to
override (and even completely ignore) the alpha blending on the component, at
least just for the parts drawn by that skin ( e.g., lets say you wanted to have
a selective alpha applied).

Hello,

Your aware that alpha values in AS3 are from 0 to 1 ?

When you say;

 Regardless of the value, it seems that if you set the alpha of a VBox,
it applies it
to the skin anyway, whether you want to override
the behavior or not.

When you set the alpha of any instance it effects the instance of
itself and it's children which in this case would be the borderSkin instance.

I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to set the alpha of a DisplayObject
which RectBorder is.

As far as using getStyle() with an actuall property, I think Adobe changed the
implementation of getStyle() (Adobe can comment on this [ can you get
non-defined style properties with getStyle() ?? ] ). I think it is more strict
now.

:: this.alpha

It would return 1 if the skin is fully opaque. IE alpha = 100%

Anyway, I don't understand the problem really ;-) I know why I am writting this
becasue I didn't relaize that the values of alpha had changed in as3.

Peace, Mike

problem...

Problem: In a programmatic skin I'm writing, I
cannot get access to
the 'alpha' value of an object, say a VBox where I
set the borderSkin
to my subclass. I *can* get access to
backgroundColor thought, for
instance.

Proposal 1) When I need the value:
getStyle(alpha) -- this always
returns 0. Or just saying `this.alpha' always
returns 1. Regardless of
the value, it seems that if you set the alpha of a
VBox, it applies it
to the skin anyway, whether you want to override
the behavior or not.
Ugh.

Proposal 2) More generally, what if I want to
instantiate my skin
subclass with a constructor -- not just the
default constructor, but
including values like alpha and keeping them
privately? Skins must
provide default constructors, otherwise they don't
compile -- is there
a way to provide constructor arguments to a skin,
and then use it? I
tried instantiating a skin like this, and passing
the instance to
borderSkin, but it didn't do anything.
(dataBinding would be an ideal
solution, so the skin gets redrawn).

Yep this is definately coming out from us as Carson said. I'll post
here when its been published. I've been thinking a lot about it
recently. I think its really important to show it from a Flex login

seamlessly integrates into J2EE, as well as how J2EE benefits from the

[flexcoders] Asynchronous TestCase.setUp in FlexUnit

2006-03-06 Thread bringrags
Hi,

I've been using FlexUnit with one of my projects and ran into a
problem. In one of my test cases, I want to load a bunch of data from
an XML file in the TestCase.setUp() method, and have all of the
individual tests use this as a fixture.

The problem is that loading a file is an asynchronous operation, but
there's no mechanism to make setUp asynchronous. Consider the
following excerpt:

public function setUp():void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
   loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,onComplete);
   loader.load(new URLRequest(myfile.xml));
}

private function onComplete(event:Event):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
   myXML = new XML(loader.data);
}

public function testSomething():void
{
   assertTrue(Should pass, myXML.someElement = some value);
}

The problem is that testSomething() gets called before onComplete().
Ideally I would like to prevent the tests from running until the
onComplete() method is called.

FlexUnit provides support for having a chain of asynchronous tests,
but it doesn't seem to provide support for chaining asynchronous setup
tasks. One possible workaround is to have each test method explicitly
prepare the setup fixture:

public function testSomething():void
{
   beginTestSetup(testSomethingHandler);
}

private function testSomethingHandler(event:Event):void
{
   endTestSetup(event);

   assertTrue(Should pass, xml.someElement = some value);
}

private function beginTestSetup(eventHandler:Function):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
   loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,addAsync(eventHandler,1000));
loader.load(new URLRequest(myfile.xml));
}

private function endTestSetup(event:Event):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
   myXML = new XML(loader.data);
}

But this is less than ideal. Any thoughts?

[flexcoders] Flex2 :: mx.logging package usage IE TraceTarget.filters

2006-03-06 Thread Michael Schmalle

Hello,

Now, I was experimenting with the mx.logging package. Looks really
kewl, I have got some things working(BTW the docs are completly messed
up on method signatures).

Any adobe peplz want to give a heads up on the filters property of ITarget aka TraceTarget class?

I have this method...

  protected function constructLogger():void
  {
   var traceTarget:ITarget = new TraceTarget();
   traceTarget.filters = [com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject];
   traceTarget.level = LogEventLevel.DEBUG;

   Log.addTarget(traceTarget);

   __logger = Log.getLogger(com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject);

   debug(constructLogger());
  }

Now, I am building a documenting framework for as3/mxml and most of my
classes inherit the TEODocObject for using services, logging and
events. Now, using the TraceTarget.filter, is there any way to filter
calls FROM the TEODocObject and filter out subclasses of certain
packages ?

Example

com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.Project extends com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject
I don't want the debug being called for this class Project

but I do want say

com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocProjectManager extends com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject

Any way to do this?
Any more docs being produced for these classes?

Remember, I have been reading the spotty docs on this and most of my trips are guesses ;-)

Also, how do I set up the flash trace.txt file ???

Peace, Mike

It worked in the Flex 2 Alpha, but no such luck in the beta. Can
anyone offer any insight on this? The example only shows how to use
text on the buttons, not images.

I also had trouble getting lastButtonStyleName to work. Has anyone

RE: [flexcoders] polymorphic interfaces

2006-03-06 Thread Gordon Smith

What problem are you having with clone()?
Here's a sample of how we override it in ListEvent, and it doesn't require any
coercion.

 override public function clone():Event

 {

 return new ListEvent(type,
bubbles, cancelable, columnIndex, rowIndex, reason, itemRenderer);

 }

Are you calling clone() yourself? If so,
why? It's intended to be called indirectly by the Player when you re-dispatch
an event; i.e. you call dispatchEvent() on an Event instance which has already
been dispatched and which you are handling. In this case, a clone of the
original event is redispatched.

There were plans of adding background-repeat support, but the

is to create a separate SWF/bitmap with the repeating pattern and

RE: [flexcoders] regarding data Grid and remote Object

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin

So when is this checkbox supposed to
apply? Just when the item is created? In that case you should just have a
property on the object that you add to the dataProvider that you set based on
the checkbox. That way it wont change the other values. If you need
each row to be different or store the value then you need to actually store it
on the object or have it available some other way.

As for when you send it through a remote

you change the value in the object before you actually send it. Or store
the boolean as another value on the object and just send it that way.!

I think youre not going to be able

RE: [flexcoders] Dynamic inserted column in datagrid

I think you may be experiencing a bug that is fixed in beta 2. Try
calling validateNow() on the DataGrid after you've assigned the
dataProvider and then try setting the width of the columns.

Yes there is a flash.display.Loader and an

Right, but there is one Loader class in Flash Player API also, not sure if that
is the reason you are getting that error...

If that is the case, you have to explictly use it with fully-qualified name

var loader:Loader = new mx.controls.Loader();

If that is the problem then compiler should be little more smart to understand
things and make it easier for developers

RE: [flexcoders] Asynchronous TestCase.setUp in FlexUnit

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin
My thought is that this is a good use-case and you should look into
proposing how a class should indicate asynchronous setup and teardown
and then go ahead and implement. Then submit as a proposal :-)

One idea is that we could add a variable called ready to the TestCase
that is by default true. We would then adjust the runMiddle() method to
check the ready variable and if it is true go ahead and call
runTestOrAsync. If it is false it simply would wait and call itself
again a little later. Then in your setup you set ready to false, and
when your data loads you set ready to true.

I haven't thought it all the way through, but something like this could
work. Check the source out and maybe override some of those methods in
your own testcase to see how it works out.

Subject: [flexcoders] Asynchronous TestCase.setUp in FlexUnit

Consider the
following excerpt:

public function setUp():void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
   loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,onComplete);
   loader.load(new URLRequest(myfile.xml));
}

private function onComplete(event:Event):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
   myXML = new XML(loader.data);
}

public function testSomething():void
{
   assertTrue(Should pass, myXML.someElement = some value);
}

The problem is that testSomething() gets called before onComplete().
Ideally I would like to prevent the tests from running until the
onComplete() method is called.

FlexUnit provides support for having a chain of asynchronous tests,
but it doesn't seem to provide support for chaining asynchronous setup
tasks. One possible workaround is to have each test method explicitly
prepare the setup fixture:

public function testSomething():void
{
   beginTestSetup(testSomethingHandler);
}

private function testSomethingHandler(event:Event):void
{
   endTestSetup(event);

   assertTrue(Should pass, xml.someElement = some value);
}

private function beginTestSetup(eventHandler:Function):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
   loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,addAsync(eventHandler,1000));
loader.load(new URLRequest(myfile.xml));
}

private function endTestSetup(event:Event):void
{
   var loader:URLLoader = URLLoader(event.target);
   myXML = new XML(loader.data);
}

But this is less than ideal. Any thoughts?

RE: [flexcoders] Flex2 :: mx.logging package usage IE TraceTarget.filters

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin

No, the logging filters are not smart
enough to understand the relationships between classes. If you put logging for
a category in for a superclass, thats it. Now what you can do is make
the logger protected and then have it assigned by the subclass. So the
subclass could assign it with its own value which would then get filtered out,
while a different class would leave it filtered in. That might be OK?

You set up flashlog by adding a mm.cfg
file to your windows %HOME% directory (usually c:\documents and
settings\username). In the mm.cfg you want:

ErrorReportingEnable=1

TraceOutputFileEnable=1

mx.logging package usage IE TraceTarget.filters

Hello,

Now, I was experimenting with the mx.logging package. Looks really kewl, I have
got some things working(BTW the docs are completly messed up on method
signatures).

Any adobe peplz want to give a heads up on the filters property of ITarget aka
TraceTarget class?

I have this method...

  protected function constructLogger():void
  {
   var
traceTarget:ITarget = new TraceTarget();
   traceTarget.filters =
[com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject];
   traceTarget.level =
LogEventLevel.DEBUG;

Log.addTarget(traceTarget);

   __logger =
Log.getLogger(com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject);

debug(constructLogger());
  }

Now, I am building a documenting framework for as3/mxml and most of my classes
inherit the TEODocObject for using services, logging and events. Now, using the
TraceTarget.filter, is there any way to filter calls FROM the TEODocObject and
filter out subclasses of certain packages ?

Example

com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.Project extends
com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject

I don't want the debug being called for this class Project

but I do want say

com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocProjectManager extends
com.teotigraphix.teodoc.core.TEODocObject

Any way to do this?
Any more docs being produced for these classes?

Remember, I have been reading the spotty docs on this and most of my trips are
guesses ;-)

Also, how do I set up the flash trace.txt file ???

Peace, Mike

RE: [flexcoders] polymorphic interfaces

2006-03-06 Thread Matt Chotin

I realize that folks are frustrated that
you cant change parameters in subclasses, but I want to make sure
everyone realizes that in other languages you are always adding new
functionality when you change the parameter types, you are not overriding the
methods. Take this simple Java example:

class Superclass

{

 public void
print(Object obj)

 {

System.out.println(Object print:  + obj);

 }

}

class Subclass extends Superclass

{

 public void
print(String str)

 {

System.out.println(String print:  + str);

 }

}

In this example the superclass has a print
method that takes an Object and the subclass has the same print method but
taking a String. Will the subclasss method be called if I pass in
a string? The answer depends on the type of the variable of the instance when
I call print.

String str = blah;

Superclass inst = new Superclass();

inst.print(str);

inst = new Subclass();

inst.print(str);

System.out.println(---);

Subclass sub = new Subclass();

sub.print(str);

Output:

Object print: blah

Object print: blah

---

String
print: blah

When the
variable was typed as the superclass, regardless of whether the instance was
the superclass or subclass the superclass method was called. I had to
have my instance typed as the subclass for the new method to be reached.

And what if we
do:

Object obj = string typed as
object;

sub.print(obj);

Guess what, it prints the Object version
even though the actual value is a String.

So lets be clear that polymorphism
is not really coming into play here. You would still need to have the
strongly typed reference to the subclass to accurately access the new
functionality. And if thats the case, having a different method
name than the superclass isnt such a big deal IMHO.

Now the ability to overload the parameters
is certainly something I wish we supported

Matt

hi all, especially Adobe dudes working on ze language.

the fact that method signatures are not polymorphic when implementing an
interface or overriding a function is a real pain in the behind.
now in my interface i have to create a function as such

interface IBla
{

function clone():IBla
}

but two levels down the line when i have extended this interface with another i
want my clone to return a more concrete type, and then each of my classes that
implement this interface their clone methods would ideally return their own
type.

yet all these classes implement IBla in some fashion either directly or
indirectly so... anyway polymorphic function signatures would be nice.
